A perfumed handkerchief pressed to her nose helped alleviate some of the stench caused by stagnant weather, unwashed bodies and general port aromas – yet the docks remained Eirini's least favourite place to venture in Vasiliádon, not that she was forced to endure such poverty these days. Back in the days when she had not been much better off than these poor souls, Eirini had despised it still; she had been a girl of great mental strength and a strong constitution – traits that she still embodied – yet there was something about this area of the city that never failed to provoke a chill of discomfort.
The sooner she got what she came for the better.
The carriage that she rode within was not her usual, it was purposely inconspicuous and just as uncomfortable, even with the added cushions and pillows. Alas, the great lady of house Leventi could not be seen in such areas – she could only imagine the gossip that would spiral if she were to be spotted – thus alongside the plain carriage, her guards were dressed plainly, free from all sigils indicating them in service to her husband. Even Eirini was dressed uncharacteristically plain for her sojourn into the belly of Vasiliádon, free from her usual embellishments she also wore a dark veil to mask her features, in addition to the heavy curtains over the windows that concealed her from view.
The cobbled path rocked the carriage from side to side as they travelled towards the tavern, her men occasionally shouting for people to clear the way as the path became more congested, sporadically resorting to force if need be and this same dance continued until the carriage came to a stop. Fingers peeled back the curtain slightly and she peered over to the establishment, a rush of memories washing upon her – it hadn't been so long ago that she had been serving wine and turning tricks in a place like this. "Perikles.." She called towards the large, brutish man who headed her guard. "...take your man and bring the girl out to me." They need only be told once and as headed off, Eirini dropped the curtain and settle back.
A mistress of whispers, Eirini did not only control the courts but she also had many sources within the depths of Vasiliádon itself. She would send men and women out to local establishments such as thing and immerse themselves within the gossips that fluttered around, most of it was inconsequential but occasionally she discovered a hidden gem here and there – it was how she had heard about this girl. Eirini was not entirely sure why she had been so intrigued by a woman who she hadn't met before, but her mans description of such a gentle beauty working in such a place had captured her attention, leaving Eirini with an itch to scratch.
Inside the tavern, the men hovered in the doorway craning their necks to try and spot the woman their mistress was interested in. The younger of the two – and the same man who had first beheld her – spotted her almost immediately, she stood out like a sore thumb amongst the riffraff. "There she is." He directed the other, pointing over a mass of heads. The pair of them were quickly parting the crowd and as they came up beside her, the elder leant down to whisper in her ear. "Don't make a scene, our mistress wants a word." With that, they both took her by the elbow and lead her outside towards the carriage, fumbling her inside as they opened the door.
"Thank you." Eirini nodded to her men who swiftly closed the carriage door and returned to their guard. For a moment she merely stared at the woman from behind her veil, a smile forming – her handsomeness hadn't been exaggerated, that was pleasing. A hand extended towards the girl, a purse offered within her grasp. "For your time." Eirini explained before tossing it into her lap and settling back against her cushions, she pushed the veil back from her face, revealing a pleasant smile. "You're very pretty...too pretty to be working in a place like this I'd say. What is your name?"

The ports were not exactly the cleanest, nor highest quality of places. Had it been many years back, Zenais would likely have balked at the idea of a prolonged time staying in such an area. She had been raised a daughter of nobility in the province of Lyncaea, and Zenais of Alistaire had no room in her life for filth or dirt. She had no qualms if she had to, but to be honest, she'd rather avoid it.
But her life hadn't exactly been smooth sailing. Fast forward ten years later, and the brunette beauty barely flinched as she exited the tavern that had become her home over the past ten years she had taken up residence in Taengea, specifically in its capitol. Had she wished to remain further in seclusion, Zenais could've chosen to move further away into a province, keep away from nobles and royals alike. And she would've liked it, except by the time she had arrived in Taengea ten years ago, she had run out of funds and simply could no longer afford to travel further. The job she had picked up out of desperation, was now a comfortable niche for her.
That did not mean that she was anywhere comfortable now, even after the length period of time though. So Zenais mostly kept to herself within the tavern, rarely wandering out of her safe enclave. Her friends were the tavern girls working there, but even with them, Zenais was a quiet thing. Too afraid of saying the wrong thing, or for people to get the wrong idea once they hear of how soft spoken she was - totally uncharacteristic for someone who lived in a squallor like the ports - Zenais opted for hiding instead.
So imagine her surprise when two burly men had came directly at her. The whisper in her ears had started her, and her friends would later tell her she had jumped a foot when the voice tickled her ear. But nothing could compare to the way she felt her chest shrink when the words finally filtered to her mind. Mistress? A million possibilities ran through her head. Had someone found her? Was it Yiannis who sent an investigator to find her?
With her heart pounding in her chest, Zenais dropped the cloth she had been using to clean the plates, thanking Gods for a moment that she hadn't broke anything. With hands wringing the washcloth she wore around her waist as she worked, she looked as small as mouse as she followed the men out - not that she had a choice, with them almost hauling her small frame out of the establishment and shoving her inside a carriage.
The brunette stumbled, catching herself just as the carriage door closed. It took a moment for Zenais to adjust her eyes to the darkness, but when she did, she gulped, and then took a few steps backwards until her head bumped against the roof of the carriage. The brunette barely had time to react when the purse was tossed at her, fumbling to make sure it did not drop. She noticed its weight - heavy, but Zenais had no great, pressing need for money.
Immediately, confusion crossed her features, as she tilted her head in curiosity, trying to make sense of the face behind the veil, covered as it was. "I... Zenais." she replied in a soft murmur, hesitant in its tone. Was that supposed to be a compliment? How was he to respond? "I have no need for coin." The girl continued, placing the purse back on the cushion next to where her bottom had fallen into seat, looking up again just in time to see the veilpushed away.
The features were fine, too fine for it to be any random person from the streets. Growing up as part of nobility, and having attended court sessions back in Colchis, Zenais could tell immediately, and her cautious nature sprang forward as she shrunk back in the shadows, her liquid blue gaze cautious, careful, almost like a scared deer. "Who are you?"

It must have been surprising for a woman to be going about her business only to be carried off by two mountainous men – or perhaps it wasn't for a girl in her position. During Eirini's own days working in such an establishment, she had been groped, touched and manhandled more times than she cared to remember, the only difference being that she had claws to fight back and an icy glare that could chill any man to the bone.
This girl seemed like a meek kitten in comparison, a little wisp of a girl who Eirini suspect would tremble should a man even look at her suggestively.
Of course, one didn't survive long working in such a place and so that in itself suggested a stronger constitution than she portrayed. Oh, what a contradiction of a woman – Eirini was incredibly intrigued.
"Zenais." She repeated slowly, it wasn't a name from these parts and her general gentleness and fairness indicated to Eirini that she had not been raised on the streets of Vasiliádon. Naturally, that was no genuine test of a persons pedigree, her own mother had been beautiful and gentle and yet there was still something about her that betrayed her lack of nobility...the same could likely be said for Eirini herself. "What a pretty name for a pretty girl."
A brow arched at her refusal of the coin, a sharp but low laugh parting her lips. "I would have thought a girl in your position would have jumped at the offer of coin, especially when it does not involve you lying on your back." No, it wasn't one of those visits and whilst her words were likely far from comforting they were the truth.
"Who am I?" Eirini repeated her question, contemplating what exactly to tell her. Eirini of Leventi was a title she uttered with pride, her reversal of fortunes blatant for the world to see – it showed that the woman had fully immersed herself into the lives of the nobility and came out of top. Yet, that also made her position a little precarious; Eirini may have controlled much in Taengean society, but even she was not completely exempt from scandal and rumour and the last thing she wanted to was bring shame to her husband. "I'm Eirini." Was all she offered for the time being. "But enough about me, I am here to learn about you. You see I am in need of someone filling an important position within my household... my men told me of you and so here I am." Tilting her head a little she studied her – there was certainly potential. "Tell me, how would you like to leave this place and never return?"

Unlike many others of her station, the life and people of the noble rank terrified Zenais. She had, once upon a time, been of the same ilk and blood of them. Favored by the crown family of Colchis, her father had been a noble man in charge of Lyncaea, yet her foolish actions, rash decisions made by a young lady desperate to save her father, had driven her to the situation Zenais now found herself in. The young brunette herself no longer held out any hope that she would some day be out of the station of life that had been dealt with her.
But not everyone thought so, apparently.
The way the elder lady repeated her name, in a tongue that sounded so much more refined then hers, roughned after the years she has spent in the Lower Levels of Vasiliadon, made the brunette internally flinch. The memories of ten years ago were but faded in her mind's eye, but to be presented it in front of her again was a rather stark reminder of everything she could have had... had she not been foolish.
Zenais made no response to the indirect compliment on her looks, a faucet of her that has proven more harm then benefit in the years past. Not at all sure of why she had been picked to join this obviously noble lady in her carriage, silence was her best friend at this point, keeping lips sealed as the other spoke.
Eirini? The name was familiar. It wasn't exactly a name commonly found... but Zenais could not put her finger on it. A long time ago as Zenais of Alistair, the girl had to take lessons on nobility and faces from her governess, part and parcel of being the daughter of a baron. Those lessons were long forgotten by now, but certain bits of information still lodged themselves in her head. As such, when the name of the lady who had summoned her was given, the brunette's brows furrowed in curiosity, her head cocked to the right as she tried to sift through her mind.
Failing however, the girl simply listened as the other spoke further. The offer given was intriguing, one that made Zenais turn subconciously to look at the tavern. Did she particularly like the place she worked at? Not entirely. The girls kept wonderful company, but they were of an ilk not suited as Zenais's friends. The customers were rowdy, and performing every day was losing its charm for the girl, especially when bawdy males tried to feel their way up, thinking (wrongly, of course), that she sold her wares much like she sold her talents.
For fortune to fall in her lap so easily though, boded some form of curiosity and caution. "What do you mean when you say important... Eirini?" the name rolled off her tongue in an unfamiliar manner as Zenais spoke. It was still in a respectful tone, but clear that while she was interested, hesitation lingered that hindered her decision making. "I... have nothing to offer, so I fail to see why I would be a choice as compared to the many others available within this city, much fairer then I am."

For the first time since her men had bundled the girl into her carriage, Eirini frowned. Oh, she could understand the confusion, it must have been quite startling for the lamb but it was growing tedious quick and so, folding her hands within her lap, a look crossed her features that was most commonly use with her youngest daughter – it radiated her growing impatience.
Eirini tried to stomach this as quickly as she could, yet the overwhelming urge to tell the girl that she wanted her for the position, but she didn't necessarily need her threatened to spill over. It was true, yet the Lady of Leventi was extremely particular about who she took into her employment, especially when it came to her ladies' maids.
The criteria was incredibly difficult to fulfil. One must be beautiful, alluring, educated, pliable and most importantly, didn't someone who didn't pose a threat to Eirini herself, and finding a girl who embodied all was a surprisingly difficult task, especially because most of all Eirini needed to trust them.
Eirini saw potential in the young woman sat opposite her, great potential even – she was beautiful and possessed a curious mind (even if the questions were slightly irksome), there was a great deal of room to work with the woman and Eirini had every faith that she could be a valuable commodity.
With a heavy and impatient sigh, Eirini's brow arched at the question "well, why not you?" She countered. "Besides I do not need a girl to be fair, I need much more than that." It wasn't just about beauty, it was a useless gift on its own. Her gaze softened slight, "you have more to offer than you realise, Zenais, which is why I am here today. Now, I want you to come and serve as one of my ladies', it is a prestigious role, one that will see you very well rewarded...that purse was a mere teaser of what you could earn by serving me."
Pausing, Eirini glanced out the window, frowning a little at the amount of time she had spent here already. "Now, before I disclose anymore I need to know whether you will take the job or not – I will say this, if you agree I can promise you that your world with change for ever."

The lady was obviously one who was decisive as she was beautiful, and Zenais could see it in her every movement. From the way her voice rang with surety, to the way in which she had ever servant with her under her beck and call, the kind of confidence oozed that Zenais could only dream of, after spending so many years running and hiding.
The heavy weight of the gold sat in her hands, a promise of a future that she could grasp, if only she gave the correct answer.
Eirini's counter to her question seemed to bring forth even more questions in her mind, and as the royal lady's gaze softened, Zenais found herself eagerly listening. To all the promises that could come, to a future she could have that was not living out the rest of her life as an unknown tavern maid, one who had ran away after one shameful encounter, one bad decision. And more.
Did she want something like that?
"Yes. I will." As if lightning had struck, Zenais's response, finally, was quick and decisive. A new glimmer came in her blue gaze, for if anything had changed, the one thing that had not changed, was Zenais's need to improve herself. Back then, her life had revolved around her family, her parents and her brother. She had tried to help them, but that had earned her a decade in self-imposed exile as she tried to dig her way out, only to be scared back by the light each time she thought she could find a way out.
But her parents were gone. Her brother was gone. She had no one else to live for, and nothing else to lose. If the noblewomen speaking to her was as powerful as she said, then perhaps, she could offer some sort of protection for her, or Zenais could learn how to protect herself, if her past came catching up to her.
Whatever it was, she had to try.
As if to solidify her decision, Zenais tightened her grip around the coin purse,a nd gave a solid nod, and a small smile that could barely be seen in the dimly light interior of the carriage. "Yes, I will try my best, my lady."

The girls rapid answer pleasantly surprised Eirini, clearly she could spot a great opportunity when one presented itself before her and that was a skill that Eirini could develop and use to her own advantage. Yes, Zenais certainly did have a great potential and Eirini looked forward to shaping her into a powerful pawn.
"That is excellent news, my dear!" Eirini gushed, her smile stretching in a blatant display of her joy at the acceptance of her offer. "Now then, you tie up all ends here for I can't see you coming back any time soon and I shall expect you this evening." Pulling back one of the heavy curtains covering the windows, Eirini called out, "Perikles."
A moment later the carriage door opened and there stood the intimidating man who had first brought Zenais out to her. "You will remain with Zenais whilst she gathers her belongings and says her farewells, once she is done escort her to the manor – protect her as you would me." The man nodded to his mistress and offered his hand towards the younger, a gentler action than he had previously.
The parted with kind words and as moment the door of the carriage closed behind Zenais, it set off along the path, the wheels echoing against the cobbles, carrying the very contented mistress back to her life of luxury – she was certainly in need of a bath.
***
The day pressed on and once Eirini had bathed she settled into a quiet evening with her ladies for company, as she usually did when Fotios was away and she had no other engagements. Every woman she surrounded herself with was held in the highest confidence and none more so than Lethe who had been in her service since the early days of her marriage, making the woman more a sister than a maid, her superiority above the others blatant.
"I want you to take a special interest in this girl, Lethe, I believe she could be of great use to us if trained properly." She spoke in hushed tones to her friend, a flicker of doubt shining within the others gaze, "you said the same about that Phoebe girl, mistress, but my lord certainly didn't think so." Lethe countered, to which Eirini rolled her eyes. "She should have known better to disturb him, which is why I am leaving her training up to you my dearest Lethe."
Before another word on the matter could be uttered, Eirini's attention was drawn towards the door upon Perikles entrance, the young Zenais beside. "Ah! You have made it..." She brightened, rising from her position to move across the room. "...thank you Perikles, that shall be all for the evening, go to the kitchens and see yourself to a hot meal and some wine." He disappeared quickly, no doubt lead by his stomach and with the gentle click of the door behind him, Eirini turned her attention fully onto Zenais. "Welcome to the Leventi manor, my dear, I trust all is taken care of?"

Obediently, Zenais bowed her head as the noble lady gushed, and before she knew it, the day devolved into a whirlwind of activity as she was left at the tavern which had been her home over the past decade, with a little over an hour to pack. Taking her departure from the tavern inn owner was a little difficult, for Zenais had been his star performer for over the past ten years, with many repeat customers returning just for a chance to hear her nightingale-like voice when she performed.
Yet with Perikles by her side, his intimidating glare clearly doing a number on the middle-aged innkeeper and his wife, in no time at all, Zenais found herself packing up her life's belongings, as the girls in the tavern asked her all sorts of questions. Ranging from if she got herself a wealthy lover, to if she was returning home to the place she had told them stories of (some untrue), Zenais answered them as best as she could, and by the time Zenais set off for the residence of Lady Eirini led by Perikles, the sun had already begun to set.
The walk was not long at all, and with the burly guard carrying half of her load (although Zenais wondered why he bothered, for her chest was not even filled, and only consisted of a few cotton gowns, and one very precious, beautifully silken red gown right at the bottom), she soon arrived at the doorstep.
Being brought in the front door was in itself, an experience for the girl who had used the servant's entrance for so long. Even at the entrance, Zenais gazed about in wonder, having been so long since she had entered such finery. But even her family manor back in Lyncaea had been nowhere as grand as the Leventi household. Colchis was a modest kingdom, raised and trained to prize attitude and hard work over finery and gold - but Taengea had been markedly different, a fact that Zenais had seen since the very first few months she had been here.
The difference was starker now, when she compared the manor she was now in, to the one she grew up in. But the young brunette was not given much time to contemplate.
Whisked to the abovestairs, she had to scurry to keep up as Perikles led her to a door, and knocked before gesturing at her to enter. Standing by his side, suddenly, she found her heart rate speeding up again. What had she gotten herself into? She had strived to remain away from the circles of nobility for so long, what if the Kotas family somehow remembered of her existence again. Zenais always hoped that ten years would be enough to wipe Yiannis's memory of her... but how would she know?
All of that bubbling to the surface was what had the brunette ducking her head and quickly sinking into a low curtsy as Eirini approached her, as if meeting her eyes to the ladies would be disrespectful of her. Hearing the click of the door behind her, only then did she dared to peek her blue eyes at the lady who would be her new mistress, uncertainty glimmering in their depths. "It is, my lady." she replied in a manner more polished then any random street rat could manage, but in a voice so soft, it clearly indicated she was uncertain under the circumstances. "Perikles was an insurmountable help, and I cannot thank you enough for allowing his assistance, and for accepting me in your lovely manor."

Eirini smiled at the gratitude Zenais expressed; the manner in which she did so and her impressive vocabulary indicating, once again, that there was more to this woman before her than met the eye. As she approached the girl, Eirini's suspicions were confirmed with the offered curtsey – she certainly knew how to act around those stationed above her.
Glancing back towards Lethe, there was a similar glint in her friends eye and an unspoken acknowledgment passed between them; usually it took a while to teach the girls the 'do's and do not's' of working for the aristocracy, and it was somewhat pleasing that Zenias seemed to have a good grasp of them already. Gods willing they would be spared the need to reprimand this one, though she would certainly still rely of Lethe to ensure that her training was best suited to serving the Leventi's.
Turning back around to face the young woman, Eirini beamed as she slipped an arm around her shoulders and lead her further into the room. "Now, we shan't bother too much this evening with rules and what not, but one thing that you should know is that the ladies in my service are no ordinary servants.." Indeed, they were well dressed and whilst the same could be said for all who served the family, Eirini's ladies were a distinguished cut above the rest. Alongside their personal duties towards their mistress, they were expected to mix with the upper echelons of society and as such were refined and accomplished creatures of beauty also. "...fist and foremost we are friends. My ladies share a special status within the household and whilst I expect you to adhere to the master and I's commands, there are a few others who would dare order you around."
They came before Lethe who stood as poised and as dignified as always, her regal posture an indication that she was indeed a woman of great importance. "This is Lethe, she will conduct your training and you must consider everything she says to be my own words – she's my right hand you might say." With a light chortle, she reached out to squeeze Lethe's hand before reclaiming her position upon the kline and encouraged Zenias to sit next to her. "I think we shall have some wine!" Two glasses were swiftly brought forward, offered first to Eirini and then to Zenias and raising her cup, she toasted, "to new beginning, dear Zenias, may Hera bring you great happiness here."

They were habits ingrained in her, her etiquette and manners back when she was born as a noble's daughter. Back then, Zenais's greatest ambition was (as taught by her mother) to garner the attention of a noble man or royal man, and gain a marriage that would benefit both herself and her family. But never in her wildest imaginations as a child, did Zenais imagine she would've first garnered the attention of a prince, and resulted in her family's downfall.
Try as she had to get rid of such mannerisms, for they were telltale signs of her upbringing, Zenais could not. But perhaps now they would play to her favor? In the docks of Vasiliadon, many had called her haughty for behaving in a manner unbefitting to her station as a tavern performer, or whom others would consider a whore at best. Yet in this room, from the way Eirini and the other lady smiled, Zenais felt for the first time that someone actually appreciated her.
Allowing Eirini to lead her further into the room, the brunette listened intently, nodding occasionally as she was instructed. She knew by now, the moment she entered the threshold of this lady's household, that she would be no regular mistress Zenais would serve. Calling her a friend however, earned Eirini a wide-eyed look of surprise from Zenais, as she did not imagine many noble ladies would consider their servant's friends. But what was in this for her?
"It is my pleasure to meet you Miss Lethe, and I am eager for your tutelage." Zenais curtsied appropriately again when introduced, her eyes deferring to the elder one. Hesitance was clear in her eyes, but remembering how Eirini had earlier called her almost, but not quite, close enough to a friend, Zenais only lingered a moment longer, before taking a seat right on the edges of a cushy stool, just as a glass of wine was offered to her. Again, her hesitance was clear, her fingers holding the wine chalice, with a small thank you to the servant.
Her eyes looked at the red liquid. How had her life come to this? She wondered, very much so, on how her family was now back in Colchis. Would her mother bemoan their fate? Would her father be embarassed that Zenais had chosen to take this route? And what about her younger brother? Dear, sweet Calix who had all the makings in the world to be a fine young, noble lord, but now.... the Gods would determine what had happened to him. Her grip on the stem of the wine chalice tightened.
She wanted to find them again. But she could not in her current state. So it was up to her to make it better.
"To a new beginning, my lady, and may the God's grant us all our wishes."
