Marietta and Sofia were playing a fun game. Sofia would hide and Marietta had to catch her! They were running all around the Marikas house all day. It was a really great time. She wished Eli was here, though. Eli would have enjoyed it too! Then again was he friends with Sofia? She didn’t think so.
That didn’t matter. Marietta was on the prowl. She checked one room, then the other, running past servants who laughed at how the tiny child was playing. Sometimes they’d help her find Sofia. Sometimes they lead her astray! The servants were tricky. They were like… an extra challenge! Marietta had to use her brain to figure out if they were telling the truth or not. She could be that. It’s called being per… perceptive!
“Sofia! I’m gonna find you!” Marietta called out giggling to her friend as she ran full force down the halls of the Marikas manor when suddenly…
WHAM!
Marietta stumbled back and fell on her butt. She rubbed her forehead as she looked up at a giant. Well, not really a giant. A real one couldn’t fit in the house. But he was huge and towering over Marietta very scarily. And to make matters worse… it was Pavlos of Marikas! Marietta didn’t much like the man. Sofia called her brother boring, but Marietta didn’t find him boring. She found him downright terrifying.
Then again, people, in general, were very scary to her, even at such a young age.
But he was also so weird. He was married to her Grandma, so didn’t that make him her daddy’s daddy? But he was her daddy’s age. Did that make him her grandpa? That didn’t make much sense either. He didn’t look old. Aren’t grandpas supposed to be old? And he had daughters that were Marietta’s age! She played with them sometimes too! So then… what was he?
Marietta stood up, brushing her chiton down. She looked straight up at Lord Pavlos, her head crouched back enough that it basically was like staring at the ceiling. “Sorry,” She mumbled, chewing on her lip. She blinked at him, eyes wide like a deer staring from within the thicket of trees. She was scared like a deer too. Would he yell at her? Could he, if he wasn’t her grandpa? Did that matter? He had such a grumpy face all the time he might just yell at her anyway.
“Are you my grandpa?” Marietta blurted the words out before she could stop them. Her childlike imagination was running wild. Was Pavlos a god? Was that why he was young? Or could anyone become parents at any time? Could Marietta be a mom? Did she have a kid somewhere she didn’t know about? That would be bad! She didn’t know how to be a mom!
“I-I mean…” She felt her face get hot as redness took over. She stood up super straight, embarrassed, ready to run if Lord Pavlos got annoyed at her. She didn’t want to get in trouble with him. He might tell Grandma, and Grandma would tell daddy, and it would be a disaster. But… she did want the answer to her burning question. “You’re my grandma’s husband. So you’re grandpa, right?”

The cries and shouts of children echoed throughout the estate, still it hardly registered with Pavlos as he went about his business, in and out of Panos's study. That was until he felt the weight of a small body collide into his legs, and nearly tumbled over, but he caught himself with his built in quick reflexes by shooting out his hand to flatten against the nearest wall. steadying his tipping balance. His reaction was instant, dark steel eyes cut towards the culprit to give them a tongue lashing, but they widened when they landed on young Marietta.
The man's puffed chest immediately deflated in a puff of hot air. Pavlos's couldn't completely dispel the pinched, irritated expression on his face as he adjusted his chiton. Before he could even get a word in, she was firing off questions in rapid succession, and all he could do to keep up was to answer the most recent.
"I am married to Lady Sera, but you need not refer to me as that...term. Pavlos is acceptable." He had never been any good with children but his own, and Sera would argue that point.
"Last I recall you were playing with Sofia?" Pavlos flicked his eyes down the halls to find his little sister, but she was nowhere in sight. Still, she could have set this whole thing up, an effort to force him to go and find her. Grunting in annoyance. he bent at the waist and offered his arms out towards the small girl. If she allowed it he would lift her up onto his waist, jutting out his hip a small bit to give her a holdfast.
If she did not want him to lift her up, then he would scoop up her smaller hand in his and begin to walk them back to where she had come from.
"Have you or Sofia had anything to eat? We have the best fruits in the kingdom, that is a promise." He said conversationally, turning a corner and casting his gaze up a flight of stone steps to see if he could catch a glimpse of his sister. Nothing yet. They reached an open area where a two servants were tending to their duties.
Pavlos called out to them, "A platter of fruit, crackers and juice." They bowed and dispersed to do as he commanded, and he returned his attention back to Marietta.

Marietta was too old to be picked up. She wasn’t like her baby sister, Hebe, who couldn’t even lift her own head yet! She was big. So when Pavlos went to lift her up Marietta resisted. She didn’t want that. She could walk with her own two feet. And run too!
He grabbed her hand instead and started taking her away. But why? She wanted to find Sofia! She didn’t want to eat fruits or have crackers. She wanted to play. She could always eat later. But what if she never found Sofia? What if Sofia was hiding and hiding and never ever came out? What would she do then? She could die in that hiding spot and that would be terrible. And it would be all Pavlos’s fault!
“Grandma isn’t a Lady.” Marietta finally spoke and corrected the man. She gave him an eye roll like it was the most obvious thing in the world, incredibly exaggerated with the attitude only a child could muster. “She’s a Princess! Mama says I’ll be a Princess too one day when papa takes the throne.” But Marietta didn’t want to be a Princess. That seemed too stuffy. She just wanted to play. Marietta never saw Princess Persephone playing. So being a princess must be boring.
“I’m not hungry,” Marietta said just as her stomach rumbled. Her hand fluttered down to her stomach and she felt her face blush. Her stomach made her to be a liar. That was incredibly rude. How dare it do that! “I shouldn’t eat without Sofia.” Marietta tried again as she tugged her little hand out of Grandpa Pavlos’s grip. “She’s hiding and if I don’t find her she won’t get to eat! And then she’ll go hungry and that’s not very nice. It’d be very selfish of me and I was told being selfish is bad. You shouldn’t be selfish, Grandpa Pavlos.” Marietta scolded the adult, just like her mother would scold her. “It’s not very nice.”
Marietta looked left and she looked right. The hall was empty and there was no sight of Sofia having been here at all. The rug that lined it was straight. That was sometimes a hint Sofia was around. If Sofia ran through sometimes she made it crooked. And then Marietta would look around. But if she wasn’t here, then she could be anywhere! She could even be by the stables! But that would be really mean because Sofia knew Marietta didn’t like horses. She could be in Raf’s room. It was fun sneaking into there, after all.
“Are you sure you didn’t see Sofia, grandpa? Did you hear her giggling somewhere maybe? She thinks she’s sneaky but she’s not very sneaky.” Marietta giggled at her assessment. She wasn’t raised with her cousins though! Stelios and Mateos were super-soldiers! Marietta learned ‘tactics’ from them! She was going to be smart just like them too when she grew up! “I bet we could find her quick!”

Pavlos could feel his patience slowly ticking away, but he fought it back because how he dealt with his daughters shouldn't be how he handled Marietta. After a brief prayer to the gods to grant him a cool temperament, he refocused his attention on the child.
"Do you not want to be a princess?" He easily noted the disdain twisting her innocent face, and a small grin upturned his lips as he felt her slip her hand away from his loosened grip. This one was not fond of being touched and he could respect that, it reminded him of himself from the past and the present. Still, it felt like if he took his eyes off of her for a second she would vanish into thin air. The energy from a child seemed limitless, and they always were ten steps ahead of you, it was a struggle to keep up honestly.
"Sofia is a big girl, you don't need to starve in order to wait for her."
It was no use, she wasn't listening to him, but instead rambling on in a speech so fast that he only caught a few words here and there, but Pavlos got the gist of it. She'd run off liked he'd feared, but thankfully it wasn't a game to where he had to find her, the girl was too busy looking around for her cousin. Pavlos picked up a peach from a platter as he followed after the excited child, calling out for his little sister.
"Listen. I have a buisness deal for you, would you be willing to listen?" He circled around in front of Marietta, crouching down to her eye-level to cut off her search for Sofia. He held out the fruit and raised a thick brow.
"If you eat this whole thing, with some water or whatever you like...I will help you look for Sofia. Alright, that's the deal. It will go much faster if both of us are looking for her don't you think? What do you say?"
When dealing with children, one had to make compromises that seemed more appealing to them then whatever it was they were currently doing. Of course, Pavlos now had to sacrifice his time to help search for his elusive sibling, but he was a man of his word and he intended to keep it.
"Come on, I know you're hungry. We'll look all over the place, and when we find her, I'll give her a peach too."

He could tell she didn’t want to be a Princess. Should she explain to them how boring it sounded? And… well… “Being a Princess is scary!” Marietta admitted, a blush starting to grow on her tiny cheeks. “You have to talk to lots and lots of people. And you have to be good always. And then when you grow up you have to marry Princes and maybe be Queen too. And you have even more guards then normal. And you have to go to places and meet other Kings and Queens and Princes and Princesses and if you do something bad then they get mad at you and could go to war. I don’t want to make war happen. People die in wars. And my cousins fight in them! Uncle Lacides too! If I make war and they die then it’s my fault. So being a Princess is scary. I like being a Lady. Being a Lady is easy.”
But that was also what made Grandma so great. She was a Princess and she was born one. She never had a choice but she did a great job! Grandma made friends with people outside of Athenia. And she didn’t start any wars at all. She probably never messed up. Grandma was perfect that way. But Marietta was far from perfect. She didn’t even like people touching her. If she was a Princess then she’d have even more handmaidens and even more people would touch her and she’d be scared all the time.
Marietta stayed by Pavlos’s side, aware that if she walked too fast or too slow he might want to pick her up again. That wasn’t good. But then when they got to the fruit, he went and got a peach. Marietta frowned though. She didn’t want to eat the peach. She always felt a little sick when eating peaches. Itchy too! But this was a business deal. That means she had to do it. Right?
But she really didn’t want to. She shifted her weight from one foot to the other and looked down like she was getting in trouble as she held the peach. She was hungry, but couldn’t she eat any other fruit? Marietta liked grapes! Grapes were yummy. And they didn’t make her feel bad like peaches did. But would she get in trouble?
Marietta looked up at Pavlos. Her eyes were large and round, shimmering with guilt. She knew she was being bad. She held the peach nervously turning it in her hand. Her teeth bit down on her bottom lip. “Do I have to?” She asked as she now started to rock back and forth on her feet. Marietta just could not stop fidgeting, as if at any moment she might do something to make Pavlos explode. “Can’t we go find Sofia now? ” And then maybe once they find Sofia he would forget all about the peach! Or Marietta could hide the peach! And then when they come back there will be no peach and they’d have to eat something else. Like grapes! Or bread and cheese! Or maybe there will be sweets like loukoumades!
