The competition had been ended hours ago. The sun had sunk below the horizons. The night air smelled of wine and mead and roasting pig and fire smoke. The night was filled with laughing and good natured yelling between comrades. New connections had been made between competitors from different kingdoms this day. Valerius had enjoyed competing, had even laughed heartily at his own failures as well as that of his friend and his men. He’d found enjoyment outside of his children for the first time in years. The death of his wife had taken its toll on his ability to find joy in much of anything. But it had now all become a bit much, and he craved a bit of silence. With that thought in mind, Val refilled his wine cup and excused himself from Lord Timaeus and the rest of the men they had gathered with.
Val was making his way quietly through the crowd of partiers in the arcus when he spotted a figure that had caught his eye earlier that day. Lord Mihail of Thanasi. The captain paused as he watched Mihail for a moment, taking a drink from his wine cup as he did. Like earlier, Valerius found himself watching the lord with an interest that hadn’t stirred since his wife had passed away. Mihail exuded confidence, and an air about him that indicated he fully believed himself to be above those that surrounded him even now. The way the lord held himself, even the way he dressed, was very… feminine. Val smirked at that notion, finding he quite liked it. He doubted though, that the lord would quite like him.
He should move on, go find that silence he’d been seeking. But instead, Val’s feet shifted course seemingly of their own volition, and he found himself walking up to the Thanasi lord. Val bowed low to the other man. ”Lord Thanasi,” he greeted, then rose to his full height once more. ”My lord, I wished to congratulate you on achieving the highest scores in archery today. I witnessed the arrow splitting shot. It was quite a feat to behold.”

I witnessed the arrow splitting shot. It was quite a feat to behold.”
Mihail had not doubted his skill coming into the archery competition, and he was not surprised by his success afterwards. After the arrow-split, it had seemed increasingly unlikely that anybody would top his score, and especially so when the majority of contestants appeared to be of the lower classes who did not have the ability to practice the sport as finely or as often as he. He had watched the other competitors with a raised eyebrow and a disdainful expression for a while, then grown bored of the game and drifted away once more to find his guard and fulfil the promise of wine.
He had lingered appropriately as the event ended, and the occasion turned to matters of celebration rather than further sports, uninterested in any event which was not archery and not paying most of the competitors any attention. Once it was over, the red ribbon had slipped from his hair so that his Stygian curls were given the freedom to fall dramatically back around his shoulders as he preferred them, and the thin strip of fabric had been handed back to his guard. "I should like to remain for a few drinks. I will inform you when I am ready to leave." The words were an implicit instruction for the man to trail him at an acceptable distance, so that he could enjoy himself without the bother of any unwanted small talk either with those who dared approached or the guard himself.
A few spare coins had been exchanged for a goblet of dark wine of highly questionable quality, which the Thanasi lord sipped slowly, as if the speed (or lack thereof) of consumption might have some beneficial effect on the taste of the drink. One hand still clutched his bow, refusing to let it go lest it were damaged, his dark eyes running over the others present until he was interrupted by the voice of another praising his archery performance.
"Thank you," he responded instinctively, assuming that would be the end of the discussion and preparing to turn away again, gaze already starting to flicker back towards his guard as though to prepare for him to deal with this irritating interlocutor. Instead, Mihail's gaze moved upwards to note the man in full, recognising him from earlier: he had watched him shoot, if solely because he had not performed too late after the Thanasi himself. It was not an interaction he wished to reject.
Curving his features into a friendlier smile that was typical, half-flirting without the words, the lord observed this tall man over the rim of his wine goblet. "Mm, I have had rather a lot of practice, you understand. But, mm, between you and me...archery is not my only skill. I would be more than glad to show you my other talents, if you would be so inclined." And if not, well, Mihail knew how to entertain himself, and the other would never know what he had missed. A shame. He set down his goblet then, sticking his hand out in the feminine manner he preferred. "But perhaps I could have a name for the handsome face? Lord Mihail of Thanasi. As you clearly know."

’Thank you.’
The Thanasi lord’s automatic response was almost… dismissive. Valerius hesitated, considering perhaps he should just walk away and rid himself of any notions towards the Mihail. Obviously, he wasn’t interested. Or was he? Mihail looked at him then, and a smile crossed his features as he took in Val’s full height. Valerius stood a bit straighter, returning the smile with a warm one of his own.
’Mm, I have had rather a lot of practice … archery is not my only skill. I would be more than glad to show you my other talents, if you would be so inclined. But perhaps I could have a name for the handsome face? …’
Val’s smile grew wider, his warm brown eyes grazing over the finely dressed and attractive lord. He noted the fact that he was still clutching his very expensive looking bow, and the memory of the arrow splitting shot played through his mind again. Mihail’s invitation to witness other talents was certainly very tempting. If the lord was as skilled in other things as he was with that bow… well… tonight could potentially make up for the fact that his ankle was still throbbing from his fall from the balance beam and the climbing course. ”Captain Valerius of Arcaneas, at your service, my lord.” In more ways than one, if things went his way. Val bowed low, letting his gaze roam Mihail once more as he stood straight again. ”I would be honored to bear witness to your… other talents.” The captain lifted his goblet and sipped at his wine. It was a bitter wine and not really Val’s favorite, but it was what was available and serving the purpose it was intended to do well enough.
Valerius had not shown interest in anyone since his wife’s death three years ago. Not until he’d watched Mihail walking away from the archery range with such confidence and pride. Even now, it was purely a physical attraction, there would be no emotional ties for this captain. He’d found love once in his life, and Val firmly believed that the gods only granted such a strong love connection like that once in someone’s life. He had no interest in finding love, just a temporary release. Would Lord Mihail feel the same way?
