The trip from Meganea to Vasiliadon had been ambling and sedate. Gavriil, having no love for the city anyway, and believing Dorothea to be enjoying her time with her friend, Melina, saw no reason to hurry. Whatever he and Evangelina wanted to see along the way, they did. Dorotheos and Alexa traveled with them and the procession was a good one. With his youngest anxious to see her sister, Gavriil wasn’t inclined to make Alexa stay home in Meganea. Even with the journey being easy paced, it was still long and by the time they reached the city estate’s courtyard, all were ready for baths and sleep.
That first night, Gavriil did not take much notice of Dorothea’s absence. He’d sent word that he was coming to the city and that she would be leaving with them when they chose to go, but that didn’t necessarily mean she needed to stay at the Archontiko alone. So when she was not found in the house, he naturally assumed her to be with Lady Melina, safely tucked away under the roof of Fotios of Leventi. A servant was dispatched with a note for Lady Dorothea that she was to return home in the morning.
The habit of waking before the sun was hard to shake and Gavriil lay in bed, watching the young made building up the fire. It had gone out in the night, leaving the hearth cool but now she was coaxing it back to life as quietly as she knew how. She blew a breath into the coals and they flared. A scratch of wood scraped against the coals and Gavriil shifted to reach over and bring Evie right up against him. He’d thought to be still so that the maid might think him asleep. All that seemed to do was give the girl a false sense that she had all the time in the world to build up the fire.
The sounds of the bed creaking and the whisper of fabric made the girl stiffen. She didn’t look around but she did thrust the rest of the tinder into the grate and began to fan the entire thing vigorously. Gavriil propped his head on his fist, his other arm crossed over Evie, and observed the servant now flapping hard. The embers glowed and shadowed in turn until a flame burst into existence. It wavered uncertainly, sensed the wood, and leaped on it. From there it was a matter of waiting for a minute or two more and then it was safe to put the log on.
She gathered her supplies, though left the bucket of logs, did a quick curtsey towards the bed without truly looking at the two occupants, and fled the room. The door shut and Gavriil sighed against Evie’s hair, finally letting himself lay back down against his pillow. “These city servants,” he said. He knew their maid in Meganea’s name and face but only by afternoon light. She was so quick and quiet in the early morning hours that he was never aware she’d been there, save for the evidence of wellbuilt fires. This one might be new - he wasn’t sure. The housekeeper here had a bit freer reign of the house, what with the Dimitrous never staying long or being around enough to be in the way.

Not normally a heavy sleeper, she was at least moderately aware of the servant slipping inside of their bedroom. Her head on the pillow, she lay there quietly and considered letting herself slip back into the deepness of sleep. But, just as she was drifting off again she felt Gavriil’s muscles tighten signaling he was about to shift or move. As his arm draped over the curve of her waist, she met him halfway and scooted gently into the curve of his body with a growing familiarity.
He is awake. And it seemed the young girl hadn't quite realized yet that the morning hours of a newly married couple were something sacred.
The bed creaked and Evangelina smiled though didn’t quite open her eyes. The sounds from the girl seemed to speed up as if she could not possibly get out of their room quick enough now. As Gavriil propped his head up, he could probably see the corners of her eyes crinkling along with the smile still settled deeply on her mouth.
With her barefoot, she moved it against his leg and curled her toes to subtly stroke the inside of his ankles and calves. The clatter of tools signaled the girl’s hurry to escape the room and the door closed with a soft thud and the sound of footsteps hurried away.
Draping her arm over his arm covering her bare waist, she continued to smile as he sighed into her hair and teased her neck, ‘These city servants.’ The sleepy smile widened into a knowing grin, although she still didn’t open her eyes yet. He’d known exactly what he’d been doing taunting the poor servant girl and fair was only fair. Shifting the curve of her rump against him as her smokey, still sleepy voice murmured, “You’re terrible.”
Rolling over to face him, she tilted her head back and looked up at where his head was still propped in his hand as she settled close to him again. “You are going to do that one of these days and she’s going to accidently catch our room on fire. Also, good morning to you.” Another throaty chuckle escaped, her dark eyes tracing his jawline with warm adoration. “You know though, that may not be an entirely bad thing,” her hands crept up his chest, leaning forward she nipped his chest lightly. “Some of these antlers have to go.” Distracting him, as she hitched one of her long, lean legs over his hip, she teased, or half teased about the antlers.
“Perhaps, while we are here I can bribe Dorothea and Melina to help me build a nice fire outside.” Looking up at him from under her lashes, dimples appeared in her sleepy grin. Shifting upwards, she pressed a kiss to his shoulder and sighed, “Maybe not today, I was thinking of maybe visiting with Melina and Agape and letting you and Alexa have some time with Dorothea since the two of you haven’t seen her since the wedding.”
“Since we have a little while until Dorothea arrives, I was thinking about a nice hot bath.” She murmured again, her teasing gone. Evangelina had been too tired to bother with anything more than a quick wash basin bath the night before after traveling in from Meganea. Tilting her chin up to meet his eyes, she smiled softly, “Want to join me?”
The worst thing about her idea was that it would mean that one of them would have to call one of the servants again to start prepping for a bath, and it’d take a little while for the water to heat. Arching an eyebrow at him, “I could wash your back and you could wash mine.” The corner of her smile lifted a little higher one one end and she shifted against him, “You might even embarrass that city servant again if you’re lucky.”
