Abir was in a panic. He had done one thing—one thing!—for pleasure, for himself, for once in his life. And now he was paying for his sins. He had spent days, then weeks, agonizing over what had happened between him and Katriel. It had felt so…good. But it was also so wrong. He knew that having relations with a woman before marriage was a sin. It was burned into his brain. Yet, he hadn’t listened to that little voice in his head that had told him to stop. Instead, he listened to the voice of Katriel telling him to go. That she wanted this just as badly as he did.
And now she was pregnant. Abir’s stomach was sinking at the very thought of it. He was too young to be a father! And he could not let this child be born to an unwed mother. A part of him said that he easily could. Nobody would believe Katriel over Abir. He came from a good family. He was a City Protector. He was honorable. Everyone said so. Abir worked hard, not only for his image, but to please Yahweh. He was a god-fearing soul, wanting to do the best he could to please their creator and his parents.
Oh his parents. How would they react when he told them the news? Not well. Especially his father. His mother would understand, but Abir was so sure that she would feel such disappointment in him. She would never say it, but he would know it. He would know that she would be disappointed in him for straying. For being untrue to his faith. For becoming a father at eighteen. For putting poor Katriel in this situation. Abir loved her, he really did, but he wasn’t so sure that he was quite ready to be married at this stage of his life. He was still learning his way in things.
However, Abir knew that he would do right by Katriel. Besides, if he was happy with her now (despite this stress), then surely he would be happy with a lifetime with her. And although fatherhood wasn’t something he had pictured so young in his life, the moment she had told him, after his panic had come excitement. He would teach their little child so many things. He was full of joy at the prospect of raising a son or a daughter. He didn’t even care what the sex of the child was—it was his.
Now, all he had to do was set the events of their marriage in motion so that nobody would suspect much about Katriel’s condition. And that began with a conversation with his mother. Because Abir was far too terrified to speak to his father about it before getting his mother’s blessing. And then would come the part where he had to speak to Katriel’s family as well.
It was afternoon and Abir had just finished a shift with the City Protectors. He bathed when he came home and when he was presentable, went in search of his mother. He found her in the kitchen, glad she was alone. She was at the counter, chopping vegetables for their evening meal. Abir approached her from the side and gave her a kiss on the cheek and a gentle hug around the shoulder.
“Hello, Eema,” he greeted, sneaking a piece of fruit. He tossed it in his hands a bit rather than eat it, wanting something to distract him from his nerves. He still hadn’t quite decided how much he wanted to tell his mother, but he definitely needed to bring up the marriage subject. Now.
