The smile that spread across Kaia’s face was genuine and private, as if Rene had reached into Kaia’s heart and pulled out one of her deepest desires. Kaia had always masked her envy of the upper class members of society with scorn and distaste. She liked to think she was above wanting luxuries like having a bed to call her own, or a reliable source of bathing and food, but the reality was that she was rather curious. Even seeing the plates of food that had been prepared for a dinner celebrating the peace amongst three kingdoms had shown Kaia just how little she knew of the world she was currently peering into. Kaia had always assumed making her desire to experience such luxuries known would be met with mockery and berating, Kaia passed off her desire as dislike. It was true that she did not like how unfair the class system was. She especially hated the mistreatment of humans in the form of slavery. Kaia did like to think though, that if she were ever in such a position of power, that she would not forget her humble beginnings. She would not keep slaves, for she valued a human’s right to their own life. She would be mindful of the majority, and would try to provide assistance for the common people where possible. How the upper echelons of Greece could dine so lavishly in the hall beyond the room while people starved in the streets was beyond Kaia. She was not so naive to expect that all the true problems of the common folk could be fixed so easily, but she wanted to see something happen.
However, that was a rabbit hole Kaia was not about to fall into just now. She was being presented with the rare opportunity to live one of her deepest secrets and she was not about to squander it. “I would very much appreciate it, though is there anything I could do for you in return?” Kaia mused. She had been overwhelmed with the kindness and generosity of her newest friends, that she was beginning to feel guilty for not having anything to offer herself. She was very used to taking what she needed from those in better situations than herself, but being given things was a completely different matter. Kaia had accepted gifts of money, luxuries and now an experience and had done little to earn them. She was not sure what she could even offer Lady Rene to show her appreciation, but if there was anything within Kaia’s power, she would be happy to oblige.
After moving into a smaller room off of the main hallway, Kaia turned back to Rene, her smile returning as she tried to think of how best to make the situation work, as well as what she could offer Lady Rene for her kindness. Before Kaia could voice any of her thoughts, Aea burst into the room and whispered into her ear rapidly as she pressed a gold coin into Kaia’s palm, ’for the driver if he gives you trouble. Find Asia’s carriage, lift the seat. Find something to wear. Leave your outfit inside the cab. Use an accent, make up a story. Hide until Alexandros and I pass. If you sit in the seat I was in, you will be in front of him when he is back inside. Your choice.’
With that, Aea was gone again, though Kaia noticed how Aea seemed to refuse to even look at Rene. Although Aea had come and gone so quickly, Kaia recognised the look of guilt and even embarrassment in her cousin’s eyes. She must have been nearby and overheard Rene and Kaia talking. While Kaia was excited at the idea of being able to participate herself, she did not wish for Aea to feel guilty as a result. Under normal circumstances, sure. Kaia likely would have lightheartedly sulked and complained while Aea had all the fun, but given that Hektos had been killed only the night before, Kaia just wanted Aea to be able to enjoy herself without that awful image replaying over and over in her mind. Kaia simply did not know how else to support her cousin other than to simply be there for her, even if it meant posing as a servant for the night. Kaia wondered if she was being selfish for wanting to join in when she was supposed to be making sure Aea had a good night, but she figured she could do just that posing as a guest as well.
’I did not mean to monopolize your time or land you in a position of antagonism with your sister.’
Meeting Lady Rene’s gaze, Kaia was a little taken aback by the solemnness of her expression. Kaia wondered what had caused Rene’s reaction and could only assume it was due to Aea avoiding her gaze. Kaia wished she knew how best to put Lady Rene at ease, but she feared speaking so openly, given they had already been overheard once.
“Lady Rene, I promise you have done no such thing,” Kaia tried to assure Rene. “I believe she feels guilty for not having included me before now,” Kaia added, not daring to confirm in any more words that it was Aea, at least not until they were somewhere more private.
“She said for us to go to Princess Asia’s carriage and to find something to wear there,” Kaia explained, a cautious but excited glimmer in her eye. “Would you come with me? I would appreciate the company, if it is not too forward to ask,” Kaia added, truly wanting to have a friend to help her. Perhaps it was a bit selfish and gluttonous of her to want to keep Rene close by, especially doing something that might make the noble lady nervous or uncomfortable, but Kaia couldn’t seem to help herself. It was after all, Lady Rene’s idea to dress Kaia up.
With a grin, Kaia led Rene out one of the side doors, then tried to figure out which carriage could be Asia’s. Stumped, Kaia turned back to Rene, hoping her friend might have an idea as to which would be the right one.

’Well why not? If Aea can, why can’t you?’

If it were possible to see the intricate cogs of the human mind turning, such would be revealed behind Kaia’s eyes in that moment, where she contemplated possibilities she had never indulged before. Rene herself could not believe the moments as they unfolded despite being not only an activate participant, but the apparent helmswoman of such a course. She had never so much as toed the proverbial line of legal transgression. Ever compliant and trying hard to emulate the magnificent decorum and dignity of her house, she had never even considered deviating from the straight and narrow. And here she was, fanning the embers of chicanery. Some part of her internally lamented in dread, wondering what her father would think, already seeing his aged and patient face looking disappointed. But would he really be? Considering the man married the head servant of his house, Rene’s adoption of self-casted shame seemed to waver and flicker in its fortitude. The crushing weight of her father’s disapproval, her own fabrication most likely, yielded to a more logical consideration of his would-be response to this. If she were to be completely honest, she could picture him being a little discontent that she’d chosen an international event in which to sample circumventing the law, but saying little about it given his own proclivities for looking beyond social cast. Even her mother, who despite her humble origins possessed a knack for acclimating to the world of nobility, may have little to say about such an affair. This would take flawless execution to prevent a catastrophe from ensuing, and Rene had to admit she wasn’t entirely sure she was the most qualified candidate, but, it was too late to back peddle, and she felt determined to help the afflicted Kaia have a night of her own.
‘I would very much appreciate it, though is there anything I could do for you in return?’
The question came to stir Rene from her inner revelry, to which she shook her head lightly, a warm smile flashing over her subtly painted lips. “No. Except to have a good time. If our duplicity is discovered, hopefully we shall remember the night as a joyous one as they lead us away to the stocks,” she giggled again, putting a hand over her mouth to try to keep the noise of her laughter from traveling too far to reach ears other than their own.
In the wake of Aea’s abrupt appearance and disappearance, the moment was left far sober. Rene’s concern that she’d played a significant part in any discord between Kaia and her sister, still none the wiser to the truth of the matter, was alleviated by the explanation provided, to which Rene’s expression likewise lightened.
‘Lady Rene, I promise you have done no such thing. I believe she feels guilty for not having included me before now. She said for us to go to Princess Asia’s carriage and to find something to wear there. Would you come with me? I would appreciate the company, if it is not too forward to ask.’
The instruction was endearing, and once more, Rene’s striking cobalt eyes traveled back down the hallway towards the arrangement of tables and blossoming social scene. She felt awful in that instant for any misjudgment of Aea, chiding herself for her premature assessment of the situation that she would have left Kaia to servitude. But that was context was rapidly fleeting in favor of one of inclusion, and Rene’s bubbly nature towards her friend resumed rather promptly. “Ohhhh...that is a wonderful idea. Of course I shall accompany you. I can assist with fixing your hair if you wish?” she offered ruefully. “We shall make you sparkle, and while I do not confess to know the princess of Kotas, I would be delighted to introduce you to Princess Emilia of Athenia. She is my closest friend since childhood, and I think you would get along well,” she nearly squeaked at the prospect of escorting Kaia into an expanded social landscape. “One can never have enough friends. They are great gifts from the gods,” she nodded before offering her arm to Kaia. “Come, let us make haste. There is a place at the tables waiting for you.”

The Dikastirio Chamber had always been one of Dionysios’ favorite places. A building of magnificent architecture, fond memories, the ever-buzzing presence of hot anger, and the phantom snarls of men arguing back and forth as if docket items were kingdoms to be conquered.
Colchians were known as cold and stoic, even cruel and unpleasant to a degree, but that was only because Athenians were too reliant upon their minds to understand how one could so thoroughly control the heart, and Taengeans were all heart without having a single brain cell among them. Colchians understood other Colchians, and inside of the Dikastirio, their famed control broke as a dam under too much pressure.
Their aloof shells cracked and shattered and it was a sight to behold. Volcanic magma burned inside of every Colchian man, woman, and child—from the lowest slave to the crown prince. It just took another Colchian to be able to bring it out and, more significantly, not flinch away from it.
But tonight, the Dikastirio Chamber would hold more than Colchian men. Representatives from Taengea and Athenia would be present, royals and nobles alike congregating in this most sacred hall. It seemed Dionysios had come home just in time, for tonight he would be able to asses the true measure of international relations without every having to get up from his seat.
Perhaps he could even sully them without ever having to send a single agent into their midsts.
Dionysios had dressed in his usual black chiton, though he had gone through the extra trouble of having this one tailored with a hem of deep crimson. His silver snake fibulae winked in the torchlight as he passed across the stones leading to the chamber entrance, his movements soundless save for the heavy clap of his wooden staff striking the stone every other step.
The entrance was relatively clear of merry commoners, which is why he preferred to arrive late to most events. He despised loud and drunken merry-making more than most things and quite preferred quiet entrances to ostentatious ones. In silence, every rare motion and sound was louder and more dazzling than those felt in the loud uproars of life around it.
He moved up the steps, one at a time, the folds of his robes flowing behind him as wisps of shadow. When he moved through the doors and into the brightly lit halls, he pursed his lips when the echo of a man’s shout drifted into his ears.
Peace dinner indeed. There was nothing more unprofitable than a nation in agreement with his neighbors.
In the deepest throes of his sickness, Dionysios made a deal with Lord Hades, promising his god an influx of souls torn from their bodies by war and pestilence. And Dionysios did not so easily break oaths. Additionally, he did not enjoy his house being deprived of its war profits.
The people of Greece would not know such things were being organized until the stage was set, the players struck to move, the gore of a hundred battlefields flooded the lands like a vermillion river, and a thousand-thousand death rattles bubbled and rose to the arched ceiling of this grand theater of theirs.
That was later. Dinner was now. Dionysios drifted through the short hallway and arrived in a room that was relatively quiet. The only movement he could see was a young man making an exit through an opposing archway.
“Lord Dionysios of House Thanasi,” the crier called, his voice an appropriate level given the hushed din of the room.
He moved away from the entrance, casting his eyes side-wards as he passed the table his children sat at before rolling forward, fixing on his seat at the head of the second table. His staff clack-clacked upon the hard floor and he moved slowly behind it, advancing at his own leisurely pace.
When he made it to his chair, a servant materialized from one corner or another to pull his seat out for him, but Dionysios waved him off with a polite thanks that felt like acid on his tongue. He might play the part of a feeble, but he was playing the part of a feeble Colchian, and that was quite a significant matter.
He kicked the leg of his chair aside and folded upon it with soundless grace.
Down the length of the table was Tythra, the revenant cunt of Colchis. Dionysios might have more respect for the woman if she hadn’t simply tripped into her position by happenstance and followed her brother’s lead in all matters. A good poisoning and a show of dominance against her simpering fool of a brother would have made her more of a force to be reckoned with rather than a brat with a shiny scepter.
His lips quirked in a small smile and he inclined his head at Tythra before turning his attention to the royals immediately near him. He’d reviewed the seating chart in the carriage, so he knew that Princess Persephone was the one to his right despite not laying eyes on her since she was a toddler. Essa was notably absent from his left, but Prince Yiannis was close enough. Just back from serving five years against the barbarians.
Dionysios almost felt pity that the poor boy would be called north again so soon. Perhaps he would be lucky enough to fall by one of the hundreds of barbarians under contract with Dionysios—barbarians that had been ordered to attack the border with fresh forces and Greek weaponry only a week past.
At least if he died there, he would not have to expire inside of his home like the rest of his pathetic kin. The youngest boy, Silas, would die choking on his own blood and shitting in his own bed. There would be no glorious songs sung about him. Yiannis and Vangelis, however, might at least die with an ode following their names.
“Your royal highnesses, a pleasure to see you.” Dionysios turned his ice-blue gaze and settled them upon Yiannis first. “I am glad you are seated so close, my prince. I wanted to personally thank you for your efforts in the north. It is a great comfort to know that our people can rely on such great warriors to keep the kingdom safe.”
Then, he turned his gaze to Persephone, “And how do you fare, Princess Persephone?”
His reputation always preceded him, but unlike his children, he did not publicly match it. For all anybody knew, tales of blood and wickedness were only attached to him because of his children, for he was careful to never allow anybody outside of his house see just how much worse the reality was compared to the gossip.
Some said that Dionysios had scrubbed so much blood from his floors that one could smell the tangy metallic of it when passing his house. The truth was that Dionysios scrubbed nothing. Aside from his interrogation chamber being completely detached from his house and set to the back of the property, it also had a convex drain installed for the sole purpose of making scrubbing unnecessary to begin with.

’No. Except to have a good time. If our duplicity is discovered, hopefully we shall remember the night as a joyous one as they lead us away to the stocks.’
Kaia grinned at Rene’s words, a small giggle of her own escaping her, “and a fine memory it would be.” Kaia would do everything in her power to avoid such a consequence though, she had survived thus far, she was sure she could manage to keep herself and Rene out of trouble for at least one more day. She would have to make sure to give Artemis an offering in thanks when next she goes hunting.
After Aea’s flurry of instructions, Kaia realised that Lady Rene seemed somewhat dejected. Kaia knew that she was not supposed to reveal too much of Aea’s plan, even if Rene had already accurately recognised her. At least, not until they were further away from prying ears. Kaia dared not confirm that Rene had guessed Aea’s identity correctly, but she did feel she offered her friend an explanation. It was of course then a relief when Rene’s expression shifted back to the warm and bubbly nature that Kaia had come to associate with the pretty blonde noble.
’Ohhhh...that is a wonderful idea. Of course I shall accompany you. I can assist with fixing your hair if you wish?’
Kaia nodded enthusiastically, “I would like that, I am afraid I have never put much effort into styling it,” Kaia admitted sheepishly. At least it was still brushed free of knots and tangles, given her uncles wanted her to look as presentable as possible for the peace festival.
’We shall make you sparkle, and while I do not confess to know the princess of Kotas, I would be delighted to introduce you to Princess Emilia of Athenia. She is my closest friend since childhood, and I think you would get along well.’
“If she’s even half as kind as you are, then I am sure I should get along with her too,” Kaia enthused. She was curious to see just what the Athenian princess would be like. Kaia had not yet met Princess Asia, but Aea seemed to like her, and she’d been kind enough to dress Aea up, so Kaia could only assume that she was kind and genuine too.
’One can never have enough friends. They are great gifts from the gods. Come, let us make haste. There is a place at the tables waiting for you.’
Friends, plural. Not even 48 hours ago, Kaia had no friends outside Aea, and now she had two, with the potential of another, should Princess Emilia think favourably of her. It was a strange but welcomed thought to think that she was not so outcast that people who lived within society should want to avoid her. Having a friend was not something Kaia thought she would ever have, so she did not want to ruin the moment either.
Taking Rene’s arm, Kaia was pleased to head outside together, her eyes scanning for any indication of which carriage would belong to Asia. At least she knew the Kotas sigil was a bear, since Aea managed to take the pendant from the prince the previous day.
Thankfully, it did not take too long to narrow down the correct carriage. Using the drachma Aea had handed her, Kaia paid the guard, assuring him she and Lady Rene had both Princess Asia and Lady Aidoni’s blessing, then climbed into the cab and opened the trunk. Sure enough, there were a number of fine gowns and bolts of fabric, complete with a variety of tasteful adornments. Kaia had made sure to steal a nice, clean chiton for her disguise as a servant and even though it was the nicest piece of clothing she now owned, it did not even compare to the pieces Asia had with her in her trunk.
“I don’t even know where to begin,” Kaia mused as she gently held up a pale blue gown. Looking to Lady Rene, Kaia gave a sheepish smile. Kaia remembered Lady Rene’s outfit at the festival the previous day, it had been daring, but quite tasteful. Kaia could have imagined thinking the exact same piece would have looked quite scandalous on most people, but when Lady Rene wore it, ‘scandal’ was not a word Kaia could have applied to her. Even now, Lady Rene looked elegant and beautiful, effortlessly so. Kaia hoped she could look even a fraction as elegant. “What would you recommend?” Kaia added, looking back at the wide variety of colours and styles.

Growing up as the youngest of six, it was never afforded to Rene the opportunity to play dress up with a younger sibling. Occasionally Cyrene would indulge her a bit, allowing Rene to brush her hair, or put it in rudimentary braids if she wished to practice. And even now at seventeen, the idea was still enticing for Rene to transform the unpolished and humble appearance of a servant into a work of art, as if it were just another medium of her craft. And that wasn’t entirely inaccurate. Kaia herself confirmed the lack of sartorial consideration in her life, and Rene was entirely too eager to remedy that.
‘I would like that, I am afraid I have never put much effort into styling it.’
“Oh we shall fix that, do not fret,” Rene promised her endearingly. When Kaia seemed amicable to being introduced to Emilia, and accepted Rene’s arm, the tiny Athenian smiled and escorted her down the corridor and back into the great room. It might have looked strange, a noble on the arm of a servant, but Rene did not care, nor did she bother to pull her eyes from the exit to gauge whether her unorthodox move was drawing attention. Never one to blossom in the limelight as it were, she kept her focus steely and her objective at the fore.
It came as a tremendous sigh of relief for Rene when they were back outside, having retreated from the den of vipers that seemed to be a trait of all gatherings where the politically driven assembled. The air outside was fresh and welcomed to Rene, slightly cooler without the pack of bodies in a closed room to warm it. Moving down the line of carriages, Kaia was instrumental in locating one in particular, assuring the coachman they had every right to be there and offering him a coin in compensation. Perhaps this is what Aea had given her when she blown through their conversation like a tornado. Climbing inside, the girls retrieved the footlocker in question and opened it. Many beautiful garments were contained therein, along with jewelry for adornment.
‘I don’t even know where to begin.’
Kaia’s voice broke the silence in the carriage, and Rene’s rose hued lips smiled lightly. “There is quite a bit here to choose from….but your eyes are a pale blue. This one may compliment that very well if it is of interest?” She retrieved a peplos of powder blue with silver embroidery along the hem. “There appear to be plenty of silver pieces for accessorizing as well,” she added of the jewelry present.

The sweet, genuine smile Rene wore, coupled with her kind tone made it very easy for Kaia to smile absently in response. Not for the first time, she wondered if what she understood about nobility was all wrong. Lady Rene was kind, warm and gentle, someone Kaia felt quite drawn to, as she seemed so opposite to everything Kaia was. Where Rene was refined and sweet, Kaia was callous and fiery. Why anyone like Rene would want to associate herself with someone like Kaia was beyond her, but she was grateful all the same. Perhaps being near someone like Rene would rub off on Kaia.
Once they were safely in the Kotas princess’ carriage, the footlocker was pulled out and opened. Kaia felt an unfamiliar sort of giddiness as she and Rene rummaged through the fine clothing. Unsurprisingly, everything in the locker was more beautiful than Kaia could have imagined. Kaia had not realised fabric could be so soft.
’There is quite a bit here to choose from….but your eyes are a pale blue. This one may compliment that very well if it is of interest?’
Kaia’s gaze flicked to the piece in question, an elegant, powder blue peplos with beautiful silver embroidery. Kaia had never worn anything with embroidery before.
’There appear to be plenty of silver pieces for accessorizing as well.’
Lady Rene was right. Kaia’s first thought was how much money they could get for all the jewelry in that box, but she swiftly pushed the reflex aside, nearly ashamed to think in such a way, considering the generosity and kindness she was being shown.
“I like it,” Kaia murmured, a sheepish excitement to her voice as she took the peplos and examined it. Without further contemplation, Kaia stood up as tall as she could within the carriage and began undressing, until she was in nothing but her undergarments, which were battered and worn. Kaia had grown up having to dress and change in front of her family, so was not inclined to get embarrassed at having Rene see her body, but ironically, she was embarrassed about the state of her underclothes. It felt nearly criminal to make something as fine as the peplos touch her ragged undergarments.
Shaking the thought away, Kaia pulled the peplos over her head, then looked to Rene for advice on what to do next, all the while, enjoying the silky smoothness of the fabric against her skin.
“What do you think?” Kaia asked, nibbling her bottom lip absently as she looked back at her friend.

“What do you think?” Kaia asked, nibbling her bottom lip absently as she looked back at her friend.
‘I like it.’
Kaia approved of the selection with nary a smidge of hesitation. Rene started to tell her there were other options, that she need not accept the first thing to come along, but the girl was already examining it herself and rising in the carriage. Easily she began disrobing, which Rene found a little….surprising to say the least, averting her gaze to be respectful and busying herself with selecting pieces of jewelry that might go well to compliment the ensemble.
‘What do you think?’
Rene’s own arresting sapphire orbs lifted from the necklace in her hands to take in the way Kaia looked in the powder blue peplos, a smile instantly lifting the corners of her lips. “You look amazing,” she nodded her approval. “The real question is though, what do you think?” There were plenty of other items to choose from if she wasn’t entirely sold on that particular style or color, though Rene suspected getting Kaia to admit such might be more difficult, as the young woman didn’t strike her as being so forward with her thoughts and feelings.
Setting down the adornments she held, Rene likewise rose inside the carriage. At a mere five feet in height, she fit easily. “Here…” she noted as she adjusted the gathers at the shoulders of the garment, tightening the silver cords a little on each side, and a strand of sterling about the waist to match, and blouse the top of the peplos a bit. When satisfied with the modification that better fit and flattered Kaia’s figure, Rene stepped back a bit, as much as the interior of the cab should allow and regarded the young woman with an endearing smile. “There...that’s much better. Do you like it? There are others if not. Be honest,” she encouraged gently. “Though society would tell us otherwise, a woman should always dress first and foremost for herself,” she added, ever a proponent of the advancement of women from their subservient positions beneath the thumbs of men. “If this meets with your approval, I think this…..” Rene’s voice trailed off as she squatted down to collect a few items from the trunk once more before rising again. “.....this would be exquisite to accessorize.” Her nimble and small fingers held up the necklace featuring a silver seashell pendant for Kaia to examine, before offering to secure it around her neck. Additionally, she’d chosen a few bangles for one wrist, and a silver spire to wrap about the opposite arm, with three orbs of mother-of-pearl seated along its curls. “The oceanic theme seems to speak to your eyes and the blue of the peplos, but we can change any or all of it if you prefer,” she beamed, having a delightful time playing dress-up all the same. “I feel as if I am playing with my beautiful dolls all over again when I was a child,” she giggled a little. “I hope you do not mind. This is very exciting.”
Her smile thinned substantially as she seemed to give pause. “I have never broken the law before. I confess I am a little nervous. I hope we are not discovered, but if anything happens, we will endure it together, yes?” She made the promise, fully intending to keep it all the way to death.

Athanasia sat there listening quietly to her friend and her brother talk with one another as she sipped her wine. It was fairly strong this evening, that was for sure, but also she never drank wine that fast before either. This was her third cup and this one she was going to sip on for the rest of the evening before following it with water. Her cheeks already could feel the flush of the drink so she just enjoyed the conversation around her. When Yiannis spoke of their father having his sons having a fine wit, Asia snorted as she hid the sound in her cup. Yiannis knew damn well that she had the same education as he did, also she would wager that since their father gave her whatever she wanted, if the succession did not go only to men she could probably get that too if she asked. That thought alone made her grin quietly to herself.
'A strong sword and a mind to match? I can’t say I’ve met such a man before.' It was Aea's comment that followed that had Athanasia coughing on her drink and wondered just what Yiannis thought of that comment as his flirting seemed to fail him so completely. So with Aea's compliments and the laughing, Athanasia's cheeks were a bright blush that would be hard to hide. This was certainly not what she was expecting, but she did not hate it. It was nice to be noticed by someone that was not in the immediate family. She was not used to it, that was for sure. Looking around the room, she could see everyone sitting and chatting, though the one that Alexandros was talking to seemed to wish to be anywhere but where she was sitting. Her brother had already removed a lady from the room, and others were just chatting along. It was nice to see so many from different nations getting along still and even ten years later, her father's works were still strong. Atleast, until one stupid soul thought that his will was more important than that of kings.
Alexandros has caused quite a fuss, so much so that not only did Vangelis have to step in, but Athanasia did too when she stepped in to have Lady Daniil moved from near the offending party that was Alexandros. He was being completely stupid at that moment, so much so that even Asia threatened him to watch his tongue, he decided his best move was to threaten her and her family right back. Did he not realize that he was just one man in a room full of men, and that she could take the control of his armies from him with almost no effort on her part? Yes, she was a woman, but she was a princess. A princess that not only had the adoration of her family, she could also take it just as easily. She was her father's daughter and her brothers' sister, they trained her better than any other male could think that they could, and she knew several different ways that she could kill a man before he would know what to do with himself. All she had to do was to keep from getting hit. Yet here was Alexandros, threatening her family like she would do nothing. She wanted to punch him right in that smiling mouth of his, all she saw was red in her anger. It still amazed her that all she did was throw his cloak over his head to blind him before placing him in a chokehold.
Athanasia tried, she really did, as she tried to get the man to see reason as she hissed in his ear through the fabric. So tempted to punch him in the nose while he was blind as he started to speak about going outside and fighting with an old man. It was enough that Asia had already let go and was leaving before he was even finished. He would never see reason. Maybe when the dinner was over, she should have him thrown in the stocks for 4 days, only water given to him and see how he likes being hungry. It is so easy to be prideful on a full stomach. She ignored him as she went to her brother Vangelis, before moving him just so she could reach without being overheard by anyone and whispered in his ear, "He will never see past his own pride. He will ruin all of our father's work. He doesn't give a shit if our people starve." Asia continued to move to the other side of the table to go speak with Yiannis. She pointedly ignored Alexandros when he removed his cloak from his head, if he noticed, he would see she was nowhere near him and did not hear what he said. A benefit to him, since she really would have punched him if she did.
Letting Yiannis know that she wasn't sitting there any longer was no fun but his response did have her smile. "I will be sure to let her know and thank you. I did my best not to hit him like I would have for any one of my beloved brothers if they were doing something asinine. I can hope, I mean, I have had some amazing teachers growing up. Even if I have a brother who doesn't seem to think so." Playfully, she poked Yiannis against the side of his head as she laughed. She was still annoyed that he did not count her among the siblings earlier as he spoke with Aea. So when the woman suddenly appeared, the look that she gave Athanasia had her pause for a moment, the arched brow as she seemed to be asking for something. Asia tilted her head slightly in response, as if she were asking if everything was ok, before she gave Aea a slow head bow in agreement. Aea had the princess's trust, so whatever she planned to do, Athanasia would back her. She knew that she would not cause her family any harm, so she would let her do as she planned, whatever that was.
After making her way to her new seat, Athanasia was pleasantly surprised when Lady Thea raised her glass in greeting to Asia as well. There were no words needed and Asia was so sure she would have tripped over her own tongue if she tried, so she smiled as she mimicked Thea and took a sip from her own glass before turning her attention to Daniil on her other side. The change in her voice made Asia smile, she sounded so much better than she did when she saw her at the other table, so much stronger now. "I accept your thanks and you are most welcome. I am glad I could get the chance to meet you as well, though it would have been better under different situations. He is usually not such an ass, that is the only thing that saved him from my fist." The last part, she leaned closer to Daniil to speak of punching others quietly before sitting upright again. "I admire you as well. Maybe later tonight or tomorrow you can show me the swordwork I have heard so much about?" Using the water bowls, Athanasia cleaned her hands as the first course was served. "What all have you seen of Colchis so far, Daniil? I hope that you have found it enjoyable for the most part."

Kaia was watching Rene closely as she awaited her friend’s judgement, watching for any sign that perhaps the finery did not look as nice on her as she hoped. However, a smile lit up Rene’s face, causing Kaia to smile too.
’You look amazing. The real question is though, what do you think?’
Twisting a little and looking down, Kaia examined the peplos on herself thoughtfully. She had thought the white peplos she’d worn the previous day had been the most flattering thing she’d ever worn, but it had not sat on her like this one did. The blue garment also felt lighter, more flexible and breathable. It was a nice feeling, especially compared to her usual tunic and riding pants that she wore around camp.
“I think it’s beautiful,” Kaia murmured honestly as Rene stood up too. Kaia didn’t move as Rene set about fixing the gatherers, willing herself to stay relaxed and hoping above all else that she’d managed to wash herself adequately so that she didn’t smell. Lady Rene smelled lovely, not just clean, but sweet like some sort of springtime flower. When Rene stepped back, Kaia blinked and held her breath, once more studying her expression as she took in Kaia’s appearance.
’There...that’s much better. Do you like it? There are others if not. Be honest.’
Kaia had to agree. When she examined herself again, she realised just how much more flattering the outfit was. She looked and felt taller and more like a true woman. Already, she was so much further away from the feral girl that grew up with a band of surly men. Both she and Aea looked like women—they were women.
’Though society would tell us otherwise, a woman should always dress first and foremost for herself.’
Kaia was humbled by Rene’s wise words, and realised she rather quite liked that sentiment. With a confident smile, Kaia nodded, “I like it, I have never felt like such a woman before.”
It was true, however there was something empowering about that. She didn’t need the disgusting remarks drunken fools in taverns would breath down her neck moments before her uncles would pull him away, nor did she need to feel like she had to impress anyone else. She just needed to be happy with herself, as much as possible. She was not dressing up for Alexandros, she was dressing up for her, because it was something she had secretly always longed to do, but had assumed would never be.
’If this meets with your approval, I think this…..’ Kaia watched as Rene picked up a selection of adornments. ’.....this would be exquisite to accessorize.’
Eyeing the seashell pendant, Kaia smiled softly. She’d always loved the sea, so it seemed so fitting. When she was younger, Kaia used to enjoy huddling up and watching the storm rage over the waves. It was calming, despite being such a chaotic force of nature. Looking at the rest of Rene’s selection, Kaia nodded honestly and enthusiastically.
’The oceanic theme seems to speak to your eyes and the blue of the peplos, but we can change any or all of it if you prefer.
“No no, I like it, it’s perfect,” Kaia assured her friend with a warm grin as Rene went about fixing the items on her. “I actually really loved the sea,” Kaia added gently.
’I feel as if I am playing with my beautiful dolls all over again when I was a child. I hope you do not mind. This is very exciting.’
Kaia had never really had any dolls, but the small giggle and excited smile on Rene’s face was infectious. Kaia did remember once wanting to put her father’s chlamys on Kelosi when she was younger, but Agolois could not see what the appeal had been and so had not allowed it.
“I don’t mind at all, this is exciting for me also. I never thought I’d ever be able to look like,” Kaia paused as she gestured to herself, “like this. Thank you.”
When Rene’s smile faded somewhat, Kaia quickly rethought over her words, hoping she had not accidentally said something crass or foolish.
’I have never broken the law before. I confess I am a little nervous. I hope we are not discovered, but if anything happens, we will endure it together, yes?’
Oh, well that was reasonable. Kaia gave Rene a kind smile that began to turn mischievous despite Kaia’s best intentions to remain reassuring. “Do not worry, I have broken the law many times. If there is anything I can offer you, it is someone who will have your back until the very end. You have my word,” Kaia promised. In hindsight, Lady Rene may not find Kaia’s admittance to being a regular criminal all that reassuring, but at the same time, Kaia supposed that if she was going to break the law for the first time, she’d feel most confident with someone who did it for a living.

Rene took to accessorizing her friend with the utmost care, affixing the seashell pendant and arm band before holding up a set of earrings so she could evaluate them against Kaia’s face. Instead of putting them on, she returned to the trunk to peruse a few others, at long last withdrawing another set and lifting it for comparison. ‘I like it, I have never felt like such a woman before.’
Kaia’s confession made Rene smile endearingly. “I hope you enjoy yourself tonight, then, and may it be the first of many nights in which you feel like such a woman and dress in finery and shine as you were meant to, because you do it for you,” she said with an encouraging nod. “I think I like these better, with the bit of pearl to match your arm band. What do you think?” She showed her the sets of earrings she was back and forth between in the decision, with it ultimately resting upon Kaia.
‘No no, I like it, it’s perfect. I actually really loved the sea.’
“Well that is magnificent, we have made a wondrous and fitting selection this evening it seems,” Rene exclaimed, rather pleased that Kaia favored her make-over thus far. She genuinely hoped the girl was being honest and not hiding any lack of enthusiasm on account of feeling obligated to endure obedience. Rene continued to adorn her friend with the pieces they’d selected thus far, constantly re-evaluating her living masterpiece to ensure everything matched and complimented each other.
“I don’t mind at all, this is exciting for me also. I never thought I’d ever be able to look like…..like this. Thank you.”
Kaia’s gratitude made Rene stop and affix her with an empathic expression on her lovely angelic face, expressive sapphire eyes glimmering from beneath her halo of golden branches. She related to the notions of feeling disadvantaged, though in an entirely different aspect. “You know, I am the youngest of six,” she began pensively, going about through the trunk to find a brush. Standing in front of Kaia, she evaluated her as she spoke, almost mournfully, selecting a lock of the young woman’s blonde hair. It wasn’t silky clean, but it would be easy to style as Rene swept through a mental list of potential ways to arrange it. “My oldest sister, Dionne, is absolutely gorgeous. Slender, blonde hair, captivating eyes, lips of crimson, curves that men are attracted to. She could have any man she chooses, and usually does. The sister between us is also an attractive young woman, Cyrene, and our mother has great plans for her to advance in the courts. The two of them will secure fine husbands, bring our family honor.” Gently she placed a hand on Kaia’s shoulder, motioning for her to sit down so she could best work on her hair. Given Rene’s smaller statue, she’d have a far easier time working if she stood and her subject sat. “As the youngest, of both the daughters and all of us, you can imagine how many opportunities there are for me,” she gave a rueful smile. “My mother does not arrange for me what she does for my sisters. There is no expectation that I will rise to the heights envisioned for the others.”
Slowly and gently, she selected another handful of tresses, and holding them firmly, she started brushing at the bottom so as not to pull any tangles into hopeless messes. “I would like to marry one day as well, find someone who is kind, and loving, who cares, and does not treat me like chattel. There is an advantage to having no one expect anything of you; the only bar set is the one I make for myself. Besides,” a bright beam reappeared. “I have found other ways to make my mark on the world, to set goals and aspirations. Maybe in the eyes of some, it amounts to nothing, but to me, it is very important.” She worked her way through Kaia’s hair, bit by bit, removing knots and combing it delicately until it was soft and fibrous and slid through her fingers with ease. “I think, in my limited knowledge of the world at large, and matters of which I have little experience, is still that, we do not have to accept positions of diminished importance or subservience if we don’t voluntarily want them. We are not beholden to any but ourselves at the end of the day. Whether it is careers, relationships, aspirations, whatever. There are always options. You are always welcome at my home in Athenia. Just so you know.” She stopped what she was doing and knelt down in front of Kaia, all mirth draining as she became very serious. “You do not ever have to make someone a priority when you are only regarded as an option.”
As the seriousness of the moment past, Rene’s radiant smile returned, as she continued to mess with Kaia’s hair, drawing up to her full height and tufting the sides back. “I think it will look magnificent with the sides drawn back, and bands of braids over top, with strands of silver interwoven. What do you think?” she asked. “Do you like to wear your hair a particular way the most?”
As Kaia notified Rene of her legal track record, the petite Athenian’s face went blank, blinking eyes the color of the Aegean sea.
‘Do not worry, I have broken the law many times. If there is anything I can offer you, it is someone who will have your back until the very end. You have my word.’
Her efforts to digest that information were visually apparent, a bit shocked by the revelation. “You have?” she breathed, her voice low. “What have you done?” Her curiosity got the best of her, heedless of the fact that Kaia might present any kind of danger to her. The thought didn’t cross her mind, though she had not considered prior what an actual criminal might look like beyond the stereotypical vagrants touted about in wheeled cages, their sentences issued by the letter of the objective law….or so she hoped.

Emilia looked around the room that she had resided in for the last week while one of her handmaidens brushed her silky brunette curls. How excited she had been when she first stepped foot in it, eager to embark on a thrilling adventure in a foreign kingdom. And now her visit was coming to an end. The dinner she was preparing for was the last event that she would attend in Colchis. The adventures … some of them thrilling and others quite harrowing … were behind her now and tomorrow, she would be stepping on a ship bound for home. She would probably never see this room again.
The young princess sighed. Part of her was glad she was going home to tell her friends of her journey, but another part of her wanted to stay and explore all the places she had not yet been. Perhaps we shall return before too long, she consoled herself. Or maybe we’ll go to Taengea next. A longing to expand her horizons had awakened inside her, a wanderlust that was impossible to ignore. Meeting new people and getting to sing for audiences who had never heard her voice before had been exciting and she hoped she would be able to travel more now that she had discovered how much she enjoyed it.
While she used to be afraid to leave her homeland when she married a foreign prince, now Emilia looked forward to experiencing whatever her future husband’s kingdom had to offer. She assumed she would be wed into one of the Grecian kingdoms and not some place on the other side of the world so she could still visit her family. If Persephone didn’t become Queen, then she might not stay in Athenia either. What if she and her sister were destined to be separated forever?
She shook her head to clear her mind of those unwelcome thoughts. The diamond and sapphire tiara that had just been placed upon her head clattered to the table. Her handmaiden sighed and picked it up. Emilia remained still until it was securely fastened. After putting on her jewelry, she stood up and walked to the room’s full-length mirror. It wasn’t as elaborately decorated as her own, but it served its purpose. The people of Colchis seemed to have simpler tastes than their counterparts in Athenia. Functionality was valued more than extravagance.
Twirling around before it, she admired the chiton she had chosen for the occasion. It was made of pure white silk that enhanced the olive tone of her skin. Wide bands of sapphire silk between ribbons bands of silver adorned the hem and the deep asymmetrical apoptygma that ended just above her waist so that her sapphire and diamond belt could be seen. Her fibulae, necklace, and armbands matched the belt and tiara. Several tiny braids woven with blue ribbon were pulled to the back of her head and combined into one long braid so that there would be no chance of her hair falling into her food. The rest of her rich golden-brown curls was left loose, bouncing against her back as she twirled.
Emilia rode to the Dikastirio with her father and sister. Commoners lined both sides of the streets, watching the carriages of the royals and nobles glide by. Some of them were dressed well, and others were clothed in rags. The princess was still becoming accustomed to the fact that some people didn’t have enough money to take care of themselves or their families. Rene had told her that it was the same way in Athenia. If I were Queen, I would give everyone so much money that they’ll never be able to spend it all. She had no desire to be Queen, but maybe she could convince Persephone to wipe out poverty once and for all. How difficult could it be?
As soon as she stepped out, she heard cries of “Sing for us! Sing for us!” Emilia had sung so many times at the celebrations that her exquisite voice was nearly as well known here as it was in Athenia. They were quite early so she thought that one song should be all right. She glanced up at her father and he nodded his permission, giving orders to two of the royal guards to stay with her before disappearing inside. As it turned out, she sang two, her sweet soprano leaping and twirling through the air with utter delight. When she was finished, she gratefully accepted her audience’s applause and promising to sing more later, walked into the Dikastirio.
There were quite a few people at the two long tables already. Persephone was sitting next to Prince Vangelis. Lucky her, her younger sister thought. At the end of that table, her father sat across from King Zenon. The chairs beside the two Kings were conspicuously empty. Was everyone afraid to sit next to a monarch or were those seats being saved for other royals? Emilia decided to take the one next to King Zenon and before she slid gracefully into the chair, she curtsied to him, her father, and Lady Tythra, greeting them respectfully.
The majority of the guests continued to arrive. Emilia watched them choose where to sit, content to listen to the conversation around her. Something happened at the other table and a Taengean noblewoman was escorted out. Perhaps she had become so inebriated that she had been making a nuisance of herself?
Eventually, the first course arrived, and Emilia turned her attention to her food, which was quite delicious. The seat beside her father was still empty and she wondered if it would remain so all evening.

While watching the room, Athanasia returned first, receiving his kind words before Elias took her place. “I will be sure to let her know, and thank you. I did my best not to hit him like I would have for any one of my beloved brothers if they were doing something asinine." Chuckling, he raised his glass to her and said "All the better that you didn't, dear sister," before taking a sip. "I can hope, I mean, I have had some amazing teachers growing up. Even if I have a brother who doesn't seem to think so.” Her words were followed by a prod at his temple, a playful annoyance meant to correct him from discounting her in the future. In return, he decided to exaggerate. "Of course. May my lips never spread any further lie that you received less than the blessings of Athena in your schooling. Truly, our teachers should awe and be humbled by your academic gifts," he teased before she walked away.
His attempt to gain Elias' attention was apparently in vain, all of the young Lord's attention focused on his Sister. He could hardly blame him. She had blossomed into her flower of youth so beautifully over the time he'd been gone. It wouldn't surprise him at all if there had been talks of an allying marriage between the two of them. Now that he thought about it, he wondered if he would soon be advised that he would be taking someone's hand. However, he would soon have his thoughts interrupted by the announcement of a most honored guest. “Lord Dionysios of House Thanasi.”
He had stood and greeted the senator, and didn't sit again until he was addressed. “I am glad you are seated so close, my prince. I wanted to personally thank you for your efforts in the North. It is a great comfort to know that our people can rely on such great warriors to keep the kingdom safe.”
The North? he thought. He had been in the Far East, but it was a small detail, and mattered little. Especially as one did not correct his elders and betters, and a case could be made for both accounts as far as Dionysios was concerned. Even if the man had experienced a senior moment, he was still well due that respect. "Oh, thank you, Lord Dionysios, for your recognition. The Persians were certainly a menacing foe. We had no idea how deeply entrenched they were until we had to beat them back across the sea," he acknowledged. The Lord then spoke to the Princess, and he may not have another word for Yiannis the entire night. But that would be his will, and it would be observed under the eyes of the Gods. If his parents had taught him one thing, it was how to survive in the ever-shifting world of politics.

’I hope you enjoy yourself tonight, then, and may it be the first of many nights in which you feel like such a woman and dress in finery and shine as you were meant to, because you do it for you.’
Kaia had been smiling a lot with Rene, but her words just spoke to the very fibres of Kaia’s soul. This was something she had always wanted and she would enjoy it purely because of that, not because of how anyone else might view her in the situation. At Rene’s nod, Kaia gave one of her own as a silent promise.
’I think I like these better, with the bit of pearl to match your arm band. What do you think?’
Kaia considered the collection carefully, as if she were deciding on which particular blade she would be best to carry with her. Ultimately, she agreed with Rene and liked the way the newest set matched the rest of her outfit. “I like these ones too,” Kaia agreed warmly, though she did have to admit that Rene had made the choice rather difficult for her—everything she’d chosen so far had been easy to love.
’Well that is magnificent, we have made a wondrous and fitting selection this evening it seems.’
Kaia grinned and nodded in enthusiasm as she chanced another moment to look down at her arms and body in awe. It was like she was looking from someone else’s point of view. She could never have imagined how she would look and feel in such finery. Kaia wondered how Aea could act so naturally in her attire, for Kaia was certain she could spend a foolish amount of time twirling and swirling to see how the fabric moved and felt. Kaia supposed she would need to act as if she dressed in such a way all the time soon enough, else she would not last long before being thrown into mines. “I don’t mind at all, this is exciting for me also. I never thought I’d ever be able to look like…..like this. Thank you.”
When Rene paused, the expression she gave Kaia was one more of understanding than not. ’You know, I am the youngest of six.’
Kaia tried to imagine what that would be like, being the youngest of six children. She could relate to having a lot of people in her immediate family, but besides Aea—who was more her sister than a cousin—Kaia was an only child. Honestly, Kaia had no idea what it would be like in a noble setting to be the youngest of so many children. From the tone of Rene’s voice and the nearly sombre expression she wore as spoke, Kaia could only glean that it wasn’t always easy.
’My oldest sister, Dionne, is absolutely gorgeous. Slender, blonde hair, captivating eyes, lips of crimson, curves that men are attracted to. She could have any man she chooses, and usually does. The sister between us is also an attractive young woman, Cyrene, and our mother has great plans for her to advance in the courts. The two of them will secure fine husbands, bring our family honor.’
As Rene spoke about her sisters, Kaia could begin to form an understanding of how Rene might feel. While Kaia had no older sisters of her own, she did know what it was like to be overlooked. Agolois always told her she was beautiful, just like her mother, and her uncles echoed the sentiment, so much so, that rarely was she given the tasks that Aea would be given. If someone had to lure a potential target and the other attack, Kaia was always the lure. It didn’t matter how hard Kaia tried to prove herself with her hunting and fighting, she was always the one used to lure or placate creepy old men.
It was interesting though to hear about how marriage brought honour to a noble family. Looking at Rene, Kaia could only imagine how lucky any man could hope to be to call her his wife. She was beautiful beyond a doubt, but also genuinely kind. Marriage for the sake of business or politics Kaia had a rough understanding about, from what she’d heard her uncles say over the years. It still baffled Kaia though that securing a marriage for someone like Rene could be so difficult. At least as a commoner, Kaia had the luxury of marrying if and when she pleased, and for the reasons that suited her. She had a little bit of an obligation to bring her family, but not in the same way the upper classes did. Kaia could go to her grave an unmarried woman and be happy with that decision and no one would have had any right to be disappointed in her.
Kaia sat down wordlessly at Rene’s motion, listening intently to her friend as she spoke. It felt nice having Rene brush and style her hair. It was comforting in a way Kaia had not expected, until she remembered how Callie would sit with Kaia, humming or singing gently as she brushed Kaia’s hair. Kaia had not realised forgotten the memories, and further had not realised how much she missed it until now.
’As the youngest, of both the daughters and all of us, you can imagine how many opportunities there are for me. My mother does not arrange for me what she does for my sisters. There is no expectation that I will rise to the heights envisioned for the others.’
Kaia’s brows furrowed in thought as Rene spoke. She could not understand why Rene couldn’t be given the same opportunities as her sisters. Kaia had never met them, and she believed Rene when she said they were lovely, but so was Rene, how could anyone—especially Rene’s own mother—not see that? Kaia wouldn’t pretend to understand the expectations of those in the upper classes, but it still baffled her that someone as genuine and kind as Rene could be overlooked simply because she was youngest. Why did people have so many children if they could not—or would not—offer them all the same opportunities? At least now Kaia understood that Rene had the same ravenous fire inside of her that Kaia did. The type that drove her to prove just how worthy she was, despite all else.
’I would like to marry one day as well, find someone who is kind, and loving, who cares, and does not treat me like chattel. There is an advantage to having no one expect anything of you; the only bar set is the one I make for myself. Besides, I have found other ways to make my mark on the world, to set goals and aspirations. Maybe in the eyes of some, it amounts to nothing, but to me, it is very important.’
“I understand,” Kaia murmured thoughtfully. It was so hard to be seen sometimes, it was enough to make anyone want to scream. Kaia was glad to hear that Rene had found her own way of making her mark on the world. It was not an easy thing to do.
As for Rene finding a husband, Kaia believed she would. Any man would be so lucky to call her his wife. To think of some man trying to treat her as anything less than she deserved was enough to make Kaia scowl at the mere thought.
’I think, in my limited knowledge of the world at large, and matters of which I have little experience, is still that, we do not have to accept positions of diminished importance or subservience if we don’t voluntarily want them. We are not beholden to any but ourselves at the end of the day. Whether it is careers, relationships, aspirations, whatever. There are always options. You are always welcome at my home in Athenia. Just so you know.’
Kaia’s thoughtful expression softened at Rene’s gracious offer. How anyone could look at her and not see how truly invaluable she was would forever be a mystery to Kaia. She was not kind for attention or praise, nor was she fake. Rene was nothing like what Kaia had always assumed a noble woman to be. She had a wholeness and realness about her. She saw the world for what it was, she didn’t seem to have the false sense of sight that her uncles had suggested many nobles did. Rene didn’t look down on Kaia, even though she had every right to do so. She was everything Kaia wished she could be, but also so deserving of it all too.
As Rene knelt down before her, Kaia’s stormy blue gaze met Rene’s deep azure eyes. ’You do not ever have to make someone a priority when you are only regarded as an option.’
Kaia understood. Alexandros may not have even noticed her presence at the time, but as a result, Kaia had seen the truth of his nature for herself. It had not mattered that Kaia had tried to warn herself previously, she’d clearly allowed him to charm her into thinking that she was different to all the other women he’d been with because of how singular he’d made her feel. At least now she knew and she would not be stung again. Kaia may not have grown up a noble, or even a civilised commoner, but she understood her own worth, even if no one else did. She didn’t want for much really, just respect and in a relationship, she would want the type of devotion that her parents had for each other. Kaia did not expect perfection, but of those two things, she was adamant. In return, she would give them the same respect and devotion. What else was there to give?
With a nod, Kaia gave a promising smile. “We’re better than that,” Kaia agreed. And they were. Rene should never have to settle for anyone less than someone who could respect her. Kaia was the same.
’I think it will look magnificent with the sides drawn back, and bands of braids over top, with strands of silver interwoven. What do you think? Do you like to wear your hair a particular way the most?’
Kaia nodded warmly. “I like having the sides pulled back,” Kaia assured her friend. There was nothing more annoying than trying to hunt with her hair flapping around in her face. She usually pulled it all back and tied it behind her head to keep it out of the way, but having braids made her feel just that little bit nicer. “I have never been terribly good at braids, but I do like them,” Kaia added. She’d only been given the pocket mirror the previous day, where before then Kaia had never had one to use before. SHe could only imagine how much easier it would be to understand what her hair is doing while trying to braid it from now on.
When Kaia spoke of her criminal history, she flinched a little at Rene’s reaction. Perhaps she’d been a little too flippant. Of course Rene would react. What if she thought Kaia was a danger to her now. Anxiously, Kaia licked her lips, trying to quickly conjure to mind what best to say to ease her friend’s concerns. She had only meant to reassure Rene that Kaia would safely see her through the endeavour, or die trying. In hindsight, it was not her smartest play. Kaia could only imagine Aea’s reaction if she’d heard.
’You have? What have you done?’
Curiosity. That was good! Curiosity was better than fear, Kaia really did not want Rene to fear her. Truly, Kaia would not ever harm or steal from Rene, not when she was so kind and generous.
“Just what my family has needed for us to survive,” Kaia promised, a sheepish smile on her face. “We steal to live mostly, but I’m not going to steal from you! Or from Princess Asia, or anyone else here,” Kaia explained. She nibbled her bottom lip thoughtfully.
“But I can fight, and I’m not afraid. We won’t get caught, I won’t allow it, but if by some divine wish of the Gods we do get caught, I would never leave you behind,” Kaia promised with a nod.

With Kaia’s permission, Rene rose to her full height, the tiny stature that she was and finished combing through the young woman’s blonde hair Thus far, Kaia had been a tremendously delightful subject for the tiny artist to dote over, delighting in dressing her up and bedazzing her in jewelry and then on to hair and cosmetics. She was either tremendously good natured, *OR* tremendously tolerant of Rene’s fretting over her, though likely a combination of both, considering her enthusiasm for all of the options provided. As the artisan worked to set her hair, parting it into sections and collecting one section at a time for plating, she smiled as Kaia verbalized her ongoing approval. ‘I like having the sides pulled back. I have never been terribly good at braids, but I do like them.’
“Then we shall teach you,” Rene affirmed with a chipper grin. “It’s not too hard. Some practice and you’ll be braiding everything in sight.” Artfully, she started on one side, than other, nearly at Kaia’s temples, braiding along the gentle slope of her head until the woven band arched across the top of her head like an intricate band. Several more times she did this, laying the braids next to each other until the band was a few inches thick.
‘Just what my family has needed for us to survive. We steal to live mostly, but I’m not going to steal from you! Or from Princess Asia, or anyone else here.’
There was a noticeable sense of urgency to Kaia’s tone, as if she felt the need to desperately defend herself. Rene thought that was silly that she should do so with her, but understood why, as if a built-in response for self-preservation. As Kaia explained her family’s dire situation, Rene’s mirth bled off, adopting a more crestfallen appearance instead. “I never thought you would. You know…..” she began quietly, “you don’t have to do that anymore. I’m sorry that is what your family had to do. It’s dreadful. But you are always welcome in Athenia at my family’s home. You wouldn’t need to steal, You could find work, if you chose.” She paused to feed bunched silver fibers through the starting ends of the braids, winding them down the length of the plated locks so that it wrapped them in platinum strands. “There is plenty to do there. My family are merchants, a lot of sea-fairing and the like. Agriculture, a university.”
The dainty Athenian paused to step back and evaluate her work, giving an involuntary nod as she liked how it was turning out so far. Satisfied in that regard, she resumed her work, drawing the sides gently, back-brushing them a bit with the comb to add volume, and pinning them into place before twisting the loose tendrils into half curls.
‘But I can fight, and I’m not afraid. We won’t get caught, I won’t allow it, but if by some divine wish of the Gods we do get caught, I would never leave you behind.’
The vow was endearing, and it caused Rene to stop what she was doing and smile at her friend, so different from herself, and even Emilia. She was fascinating to speak with, and had plenty to teach, a life so different, and yet, maybe not. “I believe you,” Rene had to chuckle. “I do not know how to fight. I imagine that is a very useful skill to have.” She became more serious, her brow knitting in concern. “Are you frequently in a position that you must call upon your skills to defend yourself?” she asked, aghast that such a thing should happen regularly to a young woman.

(Returning from Heartbreaker)
The young captain of Chaossis had been away from the table for some time, and he was rather surprised to see that his seat was still open. He was looking a little worse for wear since he had left the table. His lip was split, his jaw was read, and his clothing was not as neat as it had been. He took a look around the room, trying to gauge all that had changed while he was absent. Well, it all looks more or less the same, but Aea and Kaia are not here yet. I wonder where Aea went. She left more than a couple minutes before I did, and yet somehow I beat her back to the table. Did she leave? Did she take Kaia with her? I was hoping to see her before the night was over, to set the record straight, to make sure she knows what I feel about her. I hope they show up soon. He took his goblet and drank deeply from the cup, his lip and cheek burned from where they had been cut, but it was refreshing to have any liquid after the exertion in the courtyard. With nothing else to do, he sat at his seat, drinking from his cup and waiting for the two cousins to make their entrances. All he could do was hope that it would not be a long wait.
