The day was hot as anything, but the lady Elena wasn't about to let that stop her from paying homage to the gods. As was her usual routine on days such as this, she'd left the Marikas family home just as Helios was driving his chariot across the sky. Despite the early hour there were still a large number of people about, something she made good use of. Within a short period of time she and her ladys-in-waiting had wound their way through the city streets until they came to the stairs leading into the temple.
Oh, how many stairs there were! Every time Elena left this place it seemed she forgot just how many she'd had to climb. Each time she returned and was again surprised. The temple was imposing enough by itself with it's grand columns and archways, but being set on a slight hill made it feel larger than life. It was an appropriate feeling for a place where mortals might bend the ear of their favored deities. It was common for a person to leave offerings for a particular god based on the challenges that person was facing, but it was also an opportunity to walk in the fresh air and leave the Marikas home for a short while. Sometimes a short break from all of the female perfumes in the house was all a person needed to center themselves. Elena generally enjoyed the female company that always seemed to be around, but sometimes she really wished for solitude -and that was one reason she enjoyed her trips to the temple so much.
Her sandals made soft clapping sounds against the marble floor as she entered the goliath structure. Her ladies maids had a routine wherein they would leave the offerings at the feet of the various gods while the lady made her way past each. She did just that, moving from one to the next before coming to the platform where a likeness of Hera stood larger than life. The wife to the leader of the gods was of particular interest because not two weeks previous she had prayed to Hera in a moment of crisis and she had seen to it that Elena made it home safely. Aside from some relatively minor injuries, she had escaped the event unharmed. The patron goddess had kept her safe, so it was fitting that she receive the best of Elena's offerings.
The corked bottle of sweetly perfumed body oil and flowers directly from the Marikas garden would hopefully please the goddess of women so she would continue to protect Elena in the future. The lady had intended to place the objects near the feet of the statue, however as she moved nearer she observed another nearby -a man. It wasn't out of the ordinary to see other worshipers during the regular day, but it was still quite early for many citizens to have made the climb to the temple. She drew closer to the statue's base, gently setting her offerings next to the others before giving him a respectful nod. It was at that moment she realized who was standing in front of her.
"Senator Stravos, I did not expect to see anyone here at such an early hour." She dipped her head respectfully, enjoying the sight of the handsome young senator. Apollo really blessed this one, that was for certain. Elena recalled seeing him at various functions at the royal palace and her father introducing them, but aside from small talk the two had not spoken. The courtier did remember hearing a rumour a while ago that the Lord Elias had killed a man for beating a woman, which if it were true would be enough to make Elena's friends swoon when she told them of this chance meeting.

The temple of the Gods was a wonderous place, though he much preferred to worship in solitude. Too many people wanted something from him; though that was to be expected, he was a Baron, a Lord, and a Senator. He also had many rumors, most that made men weary of him, and women swoon. So it was little surprise when a sweet, darling voice called out to him.
He offered a grin, bare chested, the fabric of his clothing hung around his hips, socially acceptable if he were of lower class. He carefully refastened the fabric over his shoulder, as the young woman approached him. "The solitude is nice, sometimes. People tend to seek me out every hour of every day, Lady Elena." His voice was smooth, he was not at all bothered by the young woman's presence.
"What was you offering for?" Not who, that was obvious, but rather what was she asking the gods for. He raised his eyebrows, studying her. How much of herself would she reveal to him, before they had to leave the temple? It'd cause quite a rumor if she was caught in his presence alone; and while he knew nothing would happen, it seemed people enjoyed the gossip the rumor mill provided.
"I was leaving an offering to Apollo, and another to Hades." He offered, in explanation of his presence. Hades was not a common god to worship, or at least, not too many would publicly proclaim they worshipped Hades, but Elias saw no need to lie about who he decided to honor.

It was reassuring to know that Elena’s eyes hadn’t betrayed her, and that her memory served correctly that the man before her was indeed the senator. Had the air suddenly gotten cooler, or was it just her imagination? Probably just her imagination, but it was hard to think of anything for the briefest of moments, so strong was his presence. Staring was improper between acquaintances in Athenian society, so Elena’s eyes were quickly diverted back to the statue of Hera while the senator fixed his attire.
He inquired after her offering as he did so, and although Elena knew she could not tell him the full story of her rescue at the spice market, she was able to smoothly give him a satisfactory answer. “I found myself in a difficult situation recently and the Gods favoured me on that day.” She continued, “It is only fitting that I show my gratitude to them so they might continue to do so.” There was nothing mysterious about that answer, right? Elena did not wish to really elaborate further, for any more detail could reveal her encounter with a handsome Athenian soldier, and he was a secret she wished to keep to herself for the time being. There was something wonderful about having a secret no one else knew, and despite nothing unseemly occurring Elena knew how quickly rumours -both true and not- spread through the courtiers of society. She had no wish for attention of that sort, and certainly not over something that hadn’t even happened.
The senator drew her attention back to himself, sharing his interesting choices to pay homage to on this early morning. “Those are very fine choices my lord. If I may be so bold, have you done something to attract the attention of the God of the dead?” The senator was part of one of the most important parts of Athenian society, guiding its people by shaping the laws and policies of the country. Surely his place in the Asphodel Meadows was secured simply by nature of his dedication to his work and Athenia’s people. Still, the Gods were fickle, and it was wise to avoid drawing their ire by presenting offerings or prayers. He was smart to do so, and Elena smiled at this thought. Of course, he was a smart man, he was a council to the King himself! Not just any person could reach such a status of importance.
“I prefer to come early in the morning so that I may spend time with each and not be rushed out by the priests,” Elena confessed. “They seem to find it irritating when I stay for too long, but I’m not sure if it’s because I’m a woman or if they are irritated that I bend the ear of the Gods my way more often than is fair.” Her giggle echoed slightly in the large space, inviting the man beside her to join in at the expense of the priests who guarded the temple. They were altogether too stuffy for Elena’s tastes, given that the Gods they dedicated their lives to made merry, took part in debauchery of all sorts, and partook in activities that the priests deemed utterly sinful. Elena identified far more with the deities than she did with the men who scolded her for taking up too much of their time. Her eyes slid sideways to admire the indents adorning his cheeks for a second before slipping back to the statue in front of them once more.

Elias studied the young woman, appreciatively. "Ah, I see. Well, do tell me if you require assistance in getting out of... difficult situations, dear Elena." He was not as formal as she, though he held a higher title and could set the tone for their meeting. So he did. He was never terribly picky with pretty ladies and what they called him.
"How is your sister?" Daniil and Elias had once been close, though now it was not as true as he would have liked it to have been.
She asked after his preference in the God of the Dead, and he chuckled quietly. "Ah, Hades is a god of wealth, the hidden treasures under the Earth. It is only fair to honor him for my houses good fortune, and continuing fortune as we run our businesses." He stated, honestly. So honoring Hades was nothing more than a way to ensure his wealth never ran out; but in reality there was more to it, but too personal of matters to discuss with the pretty young creature next to him.
"The early morning is nice. How rude of the priests," he snorted, easily joining her laughter with his own. "They should be appreciative to see such a lovely woman in their temple, in my opinion." The compliment left his lips as easily as a lie might, as he offered his arm to the young woman.
"Won't you let me escort you home?"

The voices of the pair echoed through the temple, hopefully not drawing the ire of the priests. Elena had a feeling that with the good senator at her side the priests would keep their distance. It was not wise to irritate a man who wielded as much political influence as him, and they would know it. His dark features and smooth voice drew her in, and she nodded affirmation at his offer of assistance. “Of course, Senator Stravos, you are very gracious.” She was lying of course, there was no way in Hades she would seek out him for assistance, no matter how charming and good looking he was. It would simply be too embarrassing, not just for Elena but also for her family.
Ah, Elena had forgotten that he knew Daniil, but now that he had mentioned the Marikas with the darkest features memories stirred in her mind. Elena seemed to recall that he and her sister had been playmates as children, Danill revolting against the social decrees of their gender even then. “Daniil has been well, although we have not spent as much time together as of late. As you know she comes and goes like a storm, where she pleases and always memorable to those who get to spend time with her.” Elena’s smile indicated that Elias had remarked on one of the topics most likely to set her at ease -her family. “My parents seem to think that if they push her less, she won’t dig in her heels so much, but Daniil won’t do anything she doesn’t wish to. She really can be obstinate at times, as you surely know.” She shrugged a shoulder with a warm smile, her voice full of affection for her sister. “As long as she finds happiness, I will be happy for her no matter what.”
Fearing that she was dominating the conversation, it seemed natural to invite the senator to answer some questions on the matter. “I recall you both running around the stables and grounds as children and being scolded by our nursemaid more often than not, if my memory serves me correctly, my Lord?” Her eyes shone with amusement at the memories. They made him more relatable, and Elena would make sure to tell Daniil of her encounter with him later on, likely with much giggling.
Elena found herself nodding in understanding with his rationale of worshipping Hades. “Indeed, that is very wise of you.” It was true that Hades was the god of the dead, but also the god of wealth and money. That was likely the only reason why he had been given an equally prominent place in the Naos of the Gods because it was very uncommon to find shrines dedicated to him, and when there was one, it was usually very small. It seemed to Elena that Hades was often the forgotten God, remembered only at the end of life when it was too late. Lord Elias was wise to pay tribute at a young age, for surely his generosity in life would be rewarded after death.
His compliments were well received, and she laughed softly at his flattery, her stomach fluttering with excitement. The flickering candlelight gleamed off his almost black hair, lending him a mysterious quality that Elena found intriguing. He seemed all at once open and closed. His laugh invited her to join in at the expense of the priests, but in his silences were moments where Elena suspected an internal conversation was taking place. Their eyes met for a moment before Elena fluttered her lashes and looked away. He was the youngest and most handsome man in the senate according to local gossip, in which he was frequently featured. Elena was inclined to agree with their opinions, that the senator was extremely handsome, and it was no wonder the women of Athenia worked so hard to make themselves known to them. It was pure luck that she found herself currently the center of his attention, and Elena was planning on enjoying every moment with the handsome lord. His gaze was so intense she was sure he could see her thoughts, but she tried to keep things light. “They really should be appreciative, and I try my best not to be too disruptive I promise.” She giggled. “I’d like to see them try to kick you out Senator, for I have a feeling you’d not stand for such impolite treatment.” His arm was extended along with an offer to take her safely home, and it would be rude to turn it down.
Masking her surprise, she nodded again and took the proffered limb gracefully. “I would be glad to have such good company for my return home. I usually make the journey with only my lady’s maids for company, so your conversation will be a most welcome change. Perhaps while we walk you can tell me about your work in the Senate and what areas of society hold your passion.” The pair turned smoothly toward the large archway and pillars marking the entrance, Elena trying to recall all of her mother’s instructions about dealing with men, her maids following just out of earshot, enjoying being on the arm of the handsome senator.
