Hello there and welcome to Aeipathy! I see you've found your way to the Newcomer Guide! We hope this feature will aid you in getting started here at Aeipathy. We know that there's a lot of information on this forum, but we want to assure you that it's not as complicated as it looks! Most of our information is for reference purposes rather than mandatory reading, and the type of character you make will then affect how much reading you need to do. We also have multiple features (like this one) in place to help you work your way around the place!
Newcomer Features
Newcomer Guide
This is it! You're here! Here, you'll find a full written list of the threads you probably want to check out in the order that's best. You can then click through them at your own leisure.
Mentor System
When you first join us here on Aeipathy and come say hello on our Discord server, you'll be assigned to one of our "Mentors". Our Mentor Team are voluntary members of our community who spend their extra time on the site helping their Mentees find their feet, work out the reading they need to complete when joining and answer any and all questions they might have while working through the application process for the first time. To receive a Mentor assignment, just join us on Discord and a Mentor will be in touch with you within 48 hours!
#Quiet-Room
We have a lot of people on our Discord (and as part of our community). And sometimes it can get a little noisy. As well as multiple channels to filter and funnel chatter to the right places, keeping things understandable and organised, we also have a dedicated #quiet-room that only our staff members, mentors and Newcomers can post in. It allows for easier questions and answers without having to work around everyone else's chatter!
Getting Started
So first thing's first! You need to check us out and see if we're the kind of place you want to be a part of! So, here's a list of all the information you'll need to get
This is mandatory and important reading, as it gives a rundown of how our community operates, as well as expected conduct from our members and how our roleplaying works.
Creating a Character
Ready to create a character here on Aeipathy? Let's get you started then! First, you need to decide where you want your character to be based, before you go into reading all the finer details of the wrong kingdom!
A quick rundown of our Grecian Realm. As this was our first realm here on Aeipathy, this is a great realm for people who like to dive into plots already ongoing and be swarmed with dozens of characters to RP with. On the flip side, if you're intimidated by having to catch up on a lot of different stories, this might be a little excessive for you as a roleplayer.
A quick rundown of our African Realm. As this realm has been more recently opened than Greece, it is still in its fledgling state of creating plots and establishing connections. If you're a roleplayer who enjoys a slower, easier start to a story and being one of the founding characters of bigger plots (even if it takes a little time to get things going) then Africa is definitely a good bet for you.
Whilst our plots and stories are always changing and therefore it's not a good idea to base your character location choice solely on current on-goings, this page is a good shout for working out what is happening right now in each kingdom and where there might be a good "in" for the character you might have in mind.
If you are someone who likes to dive in with a starting point, one of our Canons or Wanteds might be right up your street! As a guest, you can't view our accepted character profiles, but you can search our Compendium, check out what is on offer and which of each family and kingdom are already in play.
Fleshing Them Out
Okay, so you've chosen where you want your character to be from? And you've checked that such a character will fit with your activity requirements and interests? Fantastic! Now to flesh them out! Go through the below threads that apply to your character, so that you can make sure you're clued up on the world your character comes from.
[attr="id","enc_awards"]
Realm Information
Now that you know where your character is going to be from, we highly recommend reading the "Everyday Life" page listed beneath the appropriate Realm category on the left. This will give you a good impression of the area, the time and the cultural norms. Skim the bits that don't seem applicable to you and focus on the bits that you think might be of use for your character and their position in life.
Kingdom Information
Now that you have a general idea for the Realm as a whole, we recommend reading the information for your character's home kingdom in particular. This can help you work out the current social climate they are living within, how they would have been raised and therefore who they have now become because of it. Just reach the appropriate page for the right kingdom listed on the left.
Politics and Law
Whilst this is not required reading, if you're interested in larger plots that involve multiple members or legal issues like marriage, crime or subterfuge, we recommend reading over the "Politics and Law" page for the Realm that applies to your character, listed beneath the "Everyday Life" page you just read. While the former isn't mandatory and the latter is, it might be helpful to read both to help inspire your writing.
If you're looking for an additional element or facet to your character beyond the basic family, occupation, rank etc, check out our "Guilds, Orders and Factions" page. These are groups that characters can either dedicate their entire life to or just an element of their world to. We do not require that your character join a group, but it might be a nice additional element to your character development.
The Military
If your character is a militant, you must read the "Military" page beneath the Realm that applies on the left. Not only will it be important to your character creation/history of your character to know how the military of his realm works, it will also be helpful for establishing current writing. If your character has nothing to do with the military, there's no need to read these pages at all.
The Houses Registry
If you are creating a Canon character or a Noble Wanted character, we strongly advise reading their family's section of the Houses Registry. You don't need to read all of it. We just recommend you reading at least the sections dedicated to your character's own family to better understand their mentality, how they would have been raised and the expectations that will be placed upon them as they grew up and how this has shaped who they are. If your character is not noble, you do not have to read this thread at all.
Creating the Character
So you're all set! You have all the information you need! Time to make the character! Simply go to our Register button in the top left of our site, or in the first link listed below, and sign up using your character's first name only as your username. It doesn't matter what capitalisation you use (it will reduce it to lowercase anyway). But make sure it's only your character's first name for our tagging purposes.
Please note that, from the point of creating your account, all canon/wanted characters must be completed within two weeks, all originals within a month.
Create your character account using your character's first name as a username. No nicknames, and no change of names. The full first name that they received at birth.
Go To Your Profile
Once you've created your account, you can then go to your profile by clicking your name at the top of this page. Click the icon in the top right of your profile to edit your character application and fill everything in from there. No codes, no faff.
Create Your Character
Our profile edit pages are fully detailed with instructions and illustrations so that you can see which information goes where. Please don't be alarmed by how much information there is. 95% of the profile is a simple drop-down menus and the reason the information is so detailed is to allow it to be displayed in the correct way on our profile pages with no need for our members to do any coding whatsoever.
Images
At Aeipathy, there is no need to create images for your character - we do that for you! Our forum operates an RL face claim policy, and all characters must hold a face claim. However, choosing your character's face is all you need to do, should you wish to. Our staff create the Side Images, Compendium Images and icons for your character based on your FC. If you would like to create your own Side Image - to be displayed to the left of your posts, simply follow the instructions. You do not, however, have to make one - our staff have you covered.
Remember Your Mentor
Upon arrival, all Newcomers will receive a Mentor. This Mentor will reach out to you quickly after your joining. Remember to use them to guide you through the profile creation if necessary.
Submit for Review
If your profile is not yet accepted, there will be a message displayed at the top of it. This message links you to sending a message to our Admin team. Click it, write a message akin to - 'this character is finished and requires reviewing' and our staff team guarantee a full review within 48 hours.
Reviewing The Character
Your mentor will review your app prior to it being sent to the admin team. They might ask you expand on some areas or help fill in some of the more lore based aspects if you need. Our admin team will then review your app and either accept or let you know any feedback via a Discord DM.
Starting Out
After your character has been accepted, our staff make a big song and dance about their addition to our character roster. Your given full access to our plotting channels on Discord, your character is announced in the applicable kingdom channel and the announcements, and they are given a shout out in that week's Weekly Broadcast. We also throw out some plotting ideas that tie your character to other members, and you're are added to the weekly sweeps that our staff team make in order to ensure that our members are finding plots and happy in their RP experience. If you ever have any issues in plotting and growing your character, please speak to our of staff team immediately and we'll be eager to help however we can!
