The blush on her sister’s cheeks confirmed far more than words could, and Pia couldn’t keep her smug smile to herself. Two queens, that is what the Leventi family would have, one in Taengea, one in Colchis. If she had managed it without the blessing of a god, Selene would have no troubles at all. Frowning at the way her sister described their uncle’s reaction, she scowled fully and gave the other woman a swat as she compared her to their overly ambitious relative. For all she loved her family, Pia had never found much fondness for Fotios and Erini’s branch of the family. The rest of her aunts, uncles, and cousins were all joys to her but those two in particular held no trust from her, they always seemed ready to back whichever side seemed to win, moving from one set to another just to make sure they had someone from all sides at their own back. She held a grudging respect, but there was little love.
“I’m sure no one wants anyone to break you. You are so sweet and gentle already Selene how could anyone think you needed to be tamed.” Pia gave her sister’s hand a squeeze, eager to hear more about her adventures and this new relationship that had formed before her own eyes.
“How could his people ask for more in a queen? If you have feelings for him you should speak to father, and I will speak with Stephanos to see if perhaps he could discover Vangelis’ feelings. They are quite close after...everything. And I am sure he would want to help see you and his friend well settled and happy.”
And so it began, what her mother had always told her. When one of them married high, it was their duty to see to the matches of the rest of their sisters and cousins. Now that she was to be queen, she had to find the best suitable husbands for all of her female relatives to secure her own place and the position of the others. The throne was only as powerful as their allies, and with Theodora set to marry Achilleas, if Selene was wed to the future king of Colchis it would keep them even safer. She would have to start considering someone for Nana next, perhaps a Condos or Dimitrou if one could be found. And for Imma...well. Perhaps Nana would do better at a foreign court. They needed someone in Athenia, and that way Imma could be kept close to home.
“I am sure Vangelis knows exactly what to make of you. You’re a beautiful woman who attended to him on his sick bed. And if his own brother was the one who made sure you came to visit that means something. I have decided we will wed you to him. And then we can find someone in Athenia for Evie, and perhaps Nana as well. We must spread our tendrils of strength and root them well. That way we will all be safe.”

While Pia may have only seen a future with 2 queens of Greece, Selene was sure it would end differently. She was sure that her family would stay in their kingdom, and she would end up with another king. And while she couldn’t deny that she liked Colchis, and Vangelis, she didn’t think that he felt the same way. And in this, her feelings didn’t matter. She would keep them to herself and had already steeled herself to tell her father that she wished to be married.
But to a king across the sea, from another realm altogether.
The more she thought about it, the more she realized that leaving was going to be the best thing.
She let out a laugh, bumping her shoulder gently. “I don’t think it was a mental ‘breaking’ he was speaking of.” Her cheeks were flushed still, “I believe that he was implying that he felt that the prince should have his way with me. He practically was offering me up on a silver platter. I burned it as soon as I finished reading it, just in case they came across it.” Her hands came up around her face. ”Pia, it’s so much worse. I was wandering the halls of their home when I heard a commotion come from his room. In the middle of the night. And I burst in there like he had been waiting for me.” She was covering her face with embarrassment, remembering that night more vividly than she expected. ”And, bless him, he was kind enough not to have me sent to the gallows right away. I must admit, being able to speak openly with him about the events of the Circus was… gratifying. And I was pleased to learn that my fear wasn’t misplaced.”
Her head was shaking as finished her thought, knowing that the last thing she wanted was anyone else to be involved. ”If Father knows, he will tell Uncle. And he would certainly turn down any potential offers simply because he would think that it is a power play. Two Queens will give the family more power than they’ve had in generations.” She sighed softly, focusing on her hands, ”I am not sure what I feel. I thought it was just that I was grateful for his actions that day, but now that I’ve gotten to know him, I am not sure what to make of what I feel. But I do know he does not feel the same. So you will just hold your tongue stay out of it.”
Selene wished that she shared Olympia’s confidence. While her sister was sure that solid marriages within the kingdom were the best safety net, the eldest felt that leaving was a far safer bet. ”Make no mistake, Vangelis didn’t send his brother to bring me to their home to stay. Zanon took it upon himself to bring me there, without Vangelis having any knowledge that I was even in the country. His actions were for his own enjoyment, to make the prince uncomfortable. He would have rather I not sit by his bed, and he would be the first one to say that.” Her head rested on her sister’s shoulder. ”I hope that once Theo is wed, Father will be able to find a suitable match. Then, after the baby is born,” her hand reached out, touching the swell of her belly and the child within. ”Perhaps he will allow me to spend time in his country, to get to know him. I’ve always been allowed to be picky, but I am not young anymore. I wish to be settled, to start a family. Like you.” Her smile was wistful, her hand lingering on her belly. She would be sad to leave, but that had always been the destiny of the Leventi girls.
