Selene was torn. A large part of her wished to be back home, with her father. She was worried about his health and hated to be this far from him when he was ill. She was close to Georgios, having spent the majority of her childhood with him in the stables. As the oldest, she likes to think that her bond with him was different than his other girls. And their rides through the country were some of her favorite memories. To be stuck in the city when he was home hurt her heart.
On the other hand, being in the city meant that she got to spend the most time with Vangelis. And as selfish as she knew that to be, she couldn’t help but be a bit thankful that she didn’t have a choice in the matter. There was no test of loyalty, no choice to be made about family verses friends. She could enjoy herself in the city, spend time with her sisters and Vangelis without too much guilt that her father was home and in bed.
Had she not been here, she would have missed the letter from Yiannis. In true Colchian fashion, it was short and to the point. He knew of a woman who needed a fresh start. She was young and hardworking, and could serve her well. He asked her to meet with her, to possibly take her on as a Lady in Waiting. Selene has written back to him, telling him to have her sent along and she would certainly give her a chance, should she be a good fit. The eldest Leventi hasn’t known the date she would arrive until her uncle had made note of the party occupying the order house. So she had been prepared to eventually sit down with her.
Dressed in a fine chiton, dyed an exotic deep blue purchased from Athenia, she was sitting at her table as she worked on a letter for her father. She had dismissed Jo after the girl had set her blonde hair into plaits and curls, having finally perfected the style after weeks of practice. The girl was young, but she had a good head on her shoulders. And her hard work would buy her freedom sooner than she would expect. But it would be nice to have someone a bit more mature, a bit more able to handle her needs without nerves. Hopefully, this would serve her well. She could use a friend in court, with Pia on bedrest and her slave not welcome.
The knock on her door, followed by the maid’s head peeking in to let her know that she had a visitor, made her smile. She knew Vangelis wouldn’t just drop in, for sake of insulting her uncle. And she didn’t think that the princess would come without a more formal announcement. Pushing her letter aside, she stood, adjusting her chiton and the silver chain on her waist. The thin bracelets softly clicked against each other as she fixed the dress. At home, with no plans to leave the house, she was barefoot with only a thin silver anklet on.
She made her way down stairs, immediately surprised by the shock of pinkish hair that covered the girl’s head. The second thing she noticed was the awkward way she was trying to right the statues she must have knocked over. Selene suppressed a giggle as she reached the landing, amusement in her eyes. She was pretty, if not a bit meek as her cheeks flushed and she dropped into a curtsy. Smiling, the blonde nodded her head. ”You must be Zelenia. Yiannis spoke highly of you. Come, let us take to the solarium. I’ll have a tray sent there.” Selene didn’t wait, instead turning to lead the way towards the open air room, filled with statues and plants. As they entered the room, a maid was dropping a tray filled with wine, cheese, cured meats and olives.
Selene took a padded bench, offering her a chair on the opposite side of her. ”Please, have a seat.”

Selene had a lot to do, having just returned from the order house to make sure that everything was in place before the Colchians made land. Since her uncle had sent the note in the wee hours of the morning, she’d been unable to sleep with much to do before the dinner that evening. But even that hadn’t stopped her from taking a few moments to make sure she was put together for the day, in case Vangelis or one of his companions stopped by between the time arrived home and when the dinner would begin. Luckily for her, all she had to do between then and now was dress, since the meal and preparations were being handled by her aunt.
Still, she had hoped to catch up on the sleep she had missed. Hopefully, she would know quickly whether or not this girl would be a good fit.
Her comment about her current state of dress made Selene wave her hand, dismissing her concern. ”I know what it is like to be fresh off a boat. I have only recently returned from Colchis myself a few weeks ago. Do not fear, it is nothing that rest and a good bath can’t solve. Think nothing of it.” As they both settled into the seats, the girl’s nerves were obvious. It wasn’t uncommon for people to act strangely around her. She had grown used to people being immediately affected by her looks, and for some, they were never able to get past them. They would stutter and stammer and forget why they were there. It made her feel bad, made her wish she could do something different. More often than not, people were scared of her.
So she did her best to put their concerns at ease. ”You are not the first one to think that. And I’m humbled that you think so. I can only hope that she favors me in that way. And if this is her blessing, then I try to bare it with grace.” Selene spotting the tray coming towards them, waving the slave in to set the wine, cheese, and meat in front of them. The host poured two cups, handing one to Zelenia. ”The city is warm, yes. But my home tends to be much cooler, as the breeze that comes from the ocean is quite pleasant.”
Taking a drink, Selene smiled brightly to the girl. ”But enough small talk, sweet girl. I am certain we could spend an hour dancing around the topic at hand.” She helped herself to the food on the table, hoping the girl would follow suit. ”Prince Yiannis said you were looking for a fresh start. Anything that should give me pause? Ruffians who we are harboring you from? An abusive husband?” She was trying to make light of the situation, hoping that she would relax a bit more so they could get down to the real reason they were here. Her time was important, after all, and she wished to get plenty done before Vang arrived later that night.

While Selene didn’t find herself in need for another lady’s maid, she was quite fond of the Kotas family. Even Yiannis, who may have seemed standoffish to her in the beginning, had become dear to her heart. There was no reason why she shouldn’t have two maids, even though she preferred to keep only one to create a closer relationship to. Because there was very little she valued more than creating bonds. She had purchased Jo to assist her, to make sure she didn’t end up in a brothel. Being young, the girl would have completely changed if she was put through that. And even though she was a slave, Selene made sure that she was well taken care of. It would look poor on the Leventi name if it were any other way.
Part of Selene’s upbringing had been on the art of reading people. Her whole life had centered around being able to tell what people weren’t saying, fulfilling needs without being asked to do so. It was a delicate art, one that her mother considered just as important as her looks. It would translate well when she married a King, she was always told. And as she spent more and more time in political settings, she realized that the woman had been right.
So she could tell that there was something she wasn’t being told. But she could tell that it was something Zelenia didn’t wish to share. There was no way of her knowing if it was something to be concerned about. But she was fairly sure that Yiannis wouldn’t have sent her to Taegnea without at least making sure that she wouldn’t be a threat to the Leventi family. So while she may not have trusted the girl in front of her, she had to trust the connect she had with the Kotas family.
Asking her to reveal a bit of her past had been a quiet test to see just how much she would share. Selene knew that it was risk hiding truth from her, whatever it may be. But there was also dignity in maintaining decorum for the sake of face. And it was just as telling that she wouldn’t be completely honest with her as it was if she had told her the truth. Trust had to be earned, and the eldest Leventi was pleased to know that this girl, while eager, would hold back until she had complete faith in Selene.
As she went on about her abilities, the blonde made no effort to stop her train of thought. It was obvious that Zelenia needed to prove herself since she had revealed the whole truth to the woman. So she didn’t mind letting her finish, hoping that it would make her feel better once she was done. And, from what she could tell, her body language suggested that it had. Leaning forward, Selene rested her hand atop the younger girls, smiling softly. ’I have experience with untrained assistants. I am most certain that Jo will be the first one to admit that she was barely able to set hair when she started with me a few months ago. But she has done well, and I think that you will both get along splendidly.” Selene waved in the slave in question, who was carrying a small stack of perfectly folded chitons.
”As a member of the Leventi house, you’ll be expected to dress like it. The dress is a bit more formal in the city, but once we return home, you will have a bit more leisure to choose what you wish to wear. From what little you have with you, and from Prince Yiannis’ note, I have had Jo gather a few garments for you to wear.” Selene offered them for her inspection. The material certainly wasn’t the finest-- there needed to be an obvious show of status. But they were new, the color palette soft and muted. It was expected that they blended into the background, but the eldest Leventi refused to submit them to the boring browns and greens the other houses chose.
They washed out against her bright colors, and that just wasn’t kind to them.
’You will have your own small quarters in Macendia, but here you and Jo will share a room. She will be able to show you what is expected of you. Do not worry, Zelenia. I am happy to have you. And I am sure that Prince Yiannis would not send someone to me without careful consideration. I am happy to be able to assist in your fresh start.” She hoped she was putting the girl out of her misery, offering Jo a seat in the room now as well. While it was highly unusual that a slave would be offered a moment like this, Jo seemed used to being included. Pouring her own wine, she helped herself to a bit of food as she took an open seat close to the other two.
”If those do not fit, I am sure we can arrange a trip to the markets to find something suitable.” Selene popped a grape into her mouth, finishing it before giving her a smile. ”I am to dine with the Prince tonight, so you will not be needed beyond assisting me to dress. That should give you time to settle your things?”

Of course, there was no way for her to have known that Zelenia would have been so grateful for what Selene considered to be a simple gesture. If she was going to take her on, she would have to be well dressed. It wasn’t like she could be seen with someone who looked a mess. And while she doubted that Yiannis would have sent her with rags, the eldest Leventi wanted to make sure that she would be well cared for.
Which was probably while the Colchian prince had sent Zelenia to Selene in the first place. She would do what she could to keep her safe.
With a wave of her hand, Selene dismissed the thanks the girl gave her. ”Do not worry. Like I said, if they are not to your liking, we can find you something else as soon as things settle down.” With the dinner at the main house later that evening, and the prince’s visit, there wouldn’t be time for them to search for clothes for her. But perhaps, if she needed something sooner, Zelenia and Jo could go out on their own.
There was a soft bell of laughter at her bold statement. ”As I was told by a Colchian one time, regret is pointless. I would never regret bringing you on.” Selene gave her a smile and stood, brushing her skirts into place as she did. ”I do not mean to be rude, but I have had quite the morning preparing for dinner tonight. I had hoped to rest a bit. There is no hurry for you two. Please, enjoy the food and company. Jo can show you to your room and can give you the tour of the grounds.”
Leaving the two girls alone also gave Zelenia a chance to learn more about her new role without having to worry about a possible insult. While she liked to think that she and Jo had a solid relationship, there may have been things she wished to share with the new girl. Things that Selene couldn’t attest to. Perhaps she had a quirk that she wasn’t aware of, to better prepare the girl for her new duty.
She gave them both a smile, placing a hand on Zelenia’s shoulder. ”Welcome to the Leventi home, dear.” With that, she gave her shoulder a squeeze and nodded to Jo before she retreated back into the hall. Usually, she would have taken it upon herself to give the tour, to help her settle in, but as she climbed the stairs, the yawn she suppressed was a clear indication that rest was more important. The last thing she wanted Vangelis to think was that she wasn’t sleeping well.
