Giggling, Zoe skipped the rest of the way to the palace after having passed the Senate. There was a huge meeting, but stuff like that was boring, and her best friend, Emilia, had invited her to spend some time instead of being bored outside the Senate. She still carried the rest of the flowers in her hands, excited to show Emilia her new find while she was out on the cliffside this morning. Zoe brought the pink, white, and yellow geraniums to her nose, smelling them. They were sweet and pretty, the two girls would have a lot of fun braiding them into their hair. Some extra color from flowers always looked lovely.
As she approached the palace, Zoe noticed that the day was actually quite cloudy. Not that it looked as if it would rain, but the sun struggled to shine behind the massive white puffs that moved slowly in the sky. It was quite warm, too, being that it was Artamisios, but ever so quiet. Usually the streets would be bustling with people in this kind of weather, going to and fro, attending to their daily routines. However, with the Senate meetings, the roads were desolate and one could hear a pin drop. Zoe was happy to get further and further from the Senate. While she was there, she could have sworn that tension hung in the air, making the environment intolerable.
After today, everything was going to change. They would know who would take their thrown next. Zoe's uncle had been spending lots of time, she supposed, deciding who he would vote for. Zoe listened when he would talk to her about such matters, but it was awfully boring and wasn't anything that she wished to partake in. If she were to have stayed at the Senate with her cousin, she would have had been forced to sit around outside a building with a bunch of other women gossiping about what was happening inside. Zoe liked gossip, but the subject of such gossip was rather boring. She also assumed that no matter the choice made, even if it was a large one, it wouldn't affect her in the slightest. After all, she would still paint and hunt in her province... She would still get up to her dark activities in the night... Nothing would change for her, or so she currently thought.
Finally making her way to where Emilia said they would meet, Zoe knocked on the door with pep in her voice, "Em! It's me!" She then let herself into the room, a cheery smile on her face and her eyes bright, "Look what I brought!" She poured the spoils of her adventure to the cliffside onto a nearby table, separating the flowers by color. "I thought we could plait our hair and weave these in. What do you think?" She smiled sweetly at her best friend.
They may had only really met two years ago, but ever since she had been inseparable from Emilia. She was a lot like a little sister to her, and as such, would never appear on her target list at night. She loved her in the same way she thought her elder sisters loved her. Zoe wanted to share so much time with her just doing what normal young women did.
"Em, I made you something too! Here, wait a second." Zoe took the bag she was carrying and set it down on the floor, kneeling down to open in, untying the cloth. With a grin, she pulled out a canvas with a white horse painted upon it in a meadow. With all the free time she had as of late, unable to make a kill recently, she had turned to painting more. It was relaxing, but the urge for blood grew greater with every passing day. Painting with paint wasn't the same as making art with blood. It would never hold the same beauty. Yet, Zoe knew that somehow, everyone else loved her paintings upon canvas. They also made perfect gifts. "What do you think? I love white horses, they're so majestic!"

Emilia could not sit still. She had woken up early, even though there was technically no need for her to. She could follow her family to the Dikasitrio for the Senate meet, yet Emilia had never once held the interest to gossip or wait for people as the men discussed important matters within a large structure. The young princess had her interests elsewhere.
But today's meet was no ordinary meet. Usually, the brunette would be practicing her harp or practicing dance, or even coming up with a new design for a chiton or a dress for the next up and coming event. Yet today, she could not sit still. Glancing out of the window of her room where she had been pacing since Persephone and her father had left with their entourage, her brows furrowed when she noticed the cloudy day. It had been drizzling in the morning, and Emiila was distrubed to think that the weather could be a prewarning to the results of the meet. More then anyone, she has seen how hard her sister worked. She has also seen her father get sicker and sicker as the time gone by. It ached Emilia's heart to see the only two family members she had these days worked to the bone.
Giving up, the girl picked up the small black puppy gambolling around her heels. Labros had been by her side since Nicholai had given it to her as an early birthday gift not a few days ago, and Emilia had immediately fallen in love with her new companion. The male puppy was playful, but had taken a shine to Emilia, following her around. Despite that, the young age of the creature meant he was easily distracted, and the princess could not yet allow the black Molossian puppy by himself without some supervision.
So the puppy was held in her arms as she moved towards the sitting room of the family quarters. She had instructed Dawn to send a missive to her best friend earlier the week - at least some company would mean she wouldn't just be antsy by herself while waiting for her sister and father to return with the results. Once the door closed behind her, she called for breakfast to be served in the room, and let Labros down to play.
It was while she was partaking in some flat bread and olives, feeding scraps to the puppy, did the knock echo. The brunette grinned when Zoe walked in, eyes widening when she saw her best friend's array of colors in arm. She had met Zoe of Argyris in one of her first court sessions when she was younger. The girl had been a year her elder, but both could talk easily. Emilia enjoyed Zoe's easygoing nature, and grinned as she nodded. "Yes please! I've been antsy all day, Zoe."
Watching with interest as Zoe bent down, Emilia caught the puppy just as Labros was about to run right into the canvas Zoe held up, and nodded agreeably. "It's beautiful Zo. I'll get it hung up in the library. Have you had breakfast?" it was where most of the palace art pieces were at, and Emilia often liked to entertain herself with them during her boring lessons. Placing Labros on her lap, she laughed as the small one squirmed. "Look, Nicholai got me a puppy, Zo." Emilia offered, the Molossian puppy's bottom wriggling as he struggled with a happy yap.

With a loud growl from her stomach, Emilia's question seemed to answer itself. Zoe chuckled softly, "Excuse my stomach, I got up really early this morning to get these. I didn't even think to eat." She patted her stomach, her sweet smile stretching across her lips. "You know, Em... I sometimes get distracted by these things. I just wanted to make sure that we had something fun to do today." Her eyes then wandered to the window, realizing that she had been awake for quite a while without breaking her fast. It was something she did ever so often, especially when she was distracted by painting or other artistic pursuits. "Would you mind if I ate here? My bad, I should have eaten before I came." A small blush appeared on the young lady's face as she felt a tad embarrassed for forgetting breakfast. However, it was her best friend and she was sure that she would understand, and with that, her blush slowly faded.
Zoe had been too preoccupied with the conversation about food, the flowers, and the painting to even process that there was a puppy in the room. As soon as Emilia mentioned the small canine, Zoe's eyes darted directly too it. She covered her hands over her mouth letting out a high pitched, "Awwww!" She then approached the puppy in Emilia's arms, outreaching her hand so the young animal could sniff it. A wide grin across her face, Zoe cooed, "He's sooooo cute!" She then moved to pat the dog softly upon its head, feeling it's soft, warm fur. "What's his name? Have you taught him any tricks yet?" Zoe then brought her hand away from the pup, knowing it wasn't her pet to play with or stroke. "Did you know you could teach puppies how to hunt with you? I remember somebody in my family talking about it some time. Not that I remember any of the details or that stuff." She then let out a small laugh, "Aren't dogs so smart?"
Zoe smiled at the puppy one more time before turning her attention back to the flowers. She grinned happily, "I think I should braid your hair first! That way you can hold your puppy while I do it! What do you think?" Not waiting for her answer, Zoe swiftly made her way over to the table, picking up the batch of flowers and presenting them to Emilia. "Which colors do you want? I really like the pink ones, but it's up to you." A whole array of different colored flowers were displayed to the young princess including pinks, violets, yellows, whites, and oranges. "Here, I'll set them down here so you can choose and I'll comb your hair while you're deciding!" Zoe smiled happily before placing the flowers beside Emilia's food, careful to not interfere with her meal before picking up a wooden comb from the small bag she brought with her. "This is my favorite comb. I really like the design on it." She handed the pine comb to Emilia. It was small enough to fit in one hand with wide teeth. On the handle, there was a simple flower design carved into the wood, elegant yet cute at the same time. "I bought it while I was out shopping the other day. I just couldn't help but get it. Isn't it simply beautiful? You'll be the first person to use it!"
With a girlish giggle, Zoe walked around to the back of Emilia, softly gathering her long brown locks behind her shoulders. After all the hair had been gathered, Zoe began to carefully run the comb through her hair, softly. She made sure not to go too fast or to pull too hard as she made work taking out any tangles that might have arrived from the day so far. As she allowed the comb to guide itself through the river of locks, Zoe hummed softly and happily. "How have things been lately? Anything fun or interesting other than your puppy?"

The hunger and the growl made the princess giggle, but it was an easy enough remedy. With a wave of her hand, one of the four handmaidens always on hand next to Emilia moved forward, and the princess easily instructed for an extra platter of flatbread and olives, and for a new platter of cheese and some goat's milk to be brought forward for the Lady Zoe. As the maid left to do as instructed, the brunette turned her attention back to her friend, patting the kline next to hers. "Of course not. Rune will return with your breakfast." she murmured, feeding Labros another scrap while the black puppy pawed at the hand holding him.
She had made some progress with the small Molossian, and he was less leggy and gambolling now, already used to the palace since he had arrived for a few days. Labros seemed to never let Emilia out of his sight even as he was curious about the palace. With Nicholai's help, they've at least got him to toilette outside, although the puppy still had accidents here and there. Luckily for Emilia, her position as a princess meant she never had to do any clean up herself.
Smiling when Zoe approached and held out her arms for the puppy, Emilia let Labros's tail wag as Zoe petted his head, his tongue lolling out. "His name is Labros, and as of now, I'm still trying to get him not to soil the palace corridors, so no, no tricks yet." she murmured with a laugh. Listening intently, she nodded. "They are. But I think Nicholai intends on teaching Labros to be my guard dog for now. I'm not the best at training him, so Nicholai has been helping me." If anything, Emilia was unafraid to admit that she was not a stellar example at things that related to her own protection, be it in self defense or in thought. It was perhaps why Nicholai and her sister was extra vigilante when it came to Emilia's safety - for the young princess simply did not give her own safety a second thought.
As Zoe spoke of braiding her hair, the door opened to allow the entrance of her maids with the platters of flatbread and cheese which they placed along with the mug of goat's milk for Zoe on the table the two girls stood between. Emilia grinned as Zoe came back with a batch of beautiful flowers, her friend did know her well, and her preference for pretty things. "Orange? It would go well with my chiton." Emilia responded, gesturing at her teal outfit for the day. Turning Labros on his tummy and rubbing it as Zoe started on her loose honeyed natural curls. Already, Zoe's presence and chatter was making her antsy nature over her sister and father in the Senate loosen up.
Reaching over gingerly, but not so much as to disturb the Argyris young lady combing her hair, Emilia placed a slice of cheese on a flatbread she had broken off, topping it with an olive before holding it up to Zoe's lips, nudging at her to take a bite over her head. "Its... It'll all be fine after today, I should think. The tension here has been impossible with the Senate meet drawing closer." Emilia finally breathed out, as she picked up her own mug of goat's milk and took a dainty sip, keeping her head still, her eyes watching out for her puppy as the black cub ran around after jumping off Emilia's lap. "I'll be happy once Sissy and Father return home. Did you manage to see them at the Dikasitrio on your way here? How did matters look?"

Orange. At the mention of a warm color, Zoe’s lips quirked up happily. She nodded, although behind the princess, “Ah, yes. Orange is such a nice color. It will go with your brown hair well.” The older girl then maneuvered around to select the finest of the orange flowers she had gathered. As she made her way back to Emilia’s hair, she ran the comb through her hair, parting it into pieces.
As Zoe slowly finished parting the hair she noticed Emilia had held out some food for her. The girls often did what some would consider silly actions such as these rather often, being best friends. Zoe smiled, standing onto her tip toes to reach over the girl’s head and take the flat bread into her mouth. It was quite a large bite, but it was also an awkward way to take such a bite. As she chewed, Zoe began to weave Emilia’s hair. This wasn’t going to be any ordinary braid; it would be delicate and cute. Not elegant or complicated like how some of her maids might braid Emilia’s hair for special occasions, but pretty.
Swallowing the bread and cheese, Zoe grinned, “Mmm! That was delicious!” Zoe loved olives, it was her favorite food, actually. So, any time she had the chance to eat some, she always savored it. “Where do you get your olives? Whenever I have some here, they’re always the best I’ve ever had.” The older girl couldn’t help but chuckle at herself as she picked up one of the flowers add to the braid. ”And you know how much I love olives. I swear I can’t get enough of those.”
At the mention of her way past the Senate here, Zoe bit her lip. She had passed the Senate, but she only bumped into Daniil of Marikas before rushing off after exchanging pleasantries. She only had seen women. She supposed she had arrived a little to late to see those who would actually enter the Dikasitrio. ”Hmm... I think I might have passed the Dikastrio after Princess Persephone and King Minas already entered. I’m sorry, Em. I didn’t see them.” She conveniently dropped the part where she had literally collided with somebody on her way to the palace and dropped all the flowers onto the ground. Luckily, only a few of them under up bruised or tarnished and she littered those onto the grounds outside the Dikastrio before heading off to the palace.
The noble girl gathered another orange flower, weaving it into the perfect spot in her friend’s hair. She noticed Emilia was rather down about the whole Senate thing, which honestly Zoe didn’t really care about or even remember was happening today until she walked passed there. The young courtier cared not about political matters unless they pertained directly to her. She was only interested in increasing her own social standing and perhaps passing a law that allowed her activities of the night to hold a erm... more lenient punishment. But since it meant so much to her friend, she spoke in a softer voice, hoping to comfort her.
“I’m sure whatever happens, Em, everything will be alright. You’ll always have me no matter what. Through thick or thin, our bonds of friendship will never break!” Zoe giggled at the exclamation she made, knowing it was a little over the top, but she meant what she said. She would never abandon her best friend, no matter what happened. Whether Emilia was or wasn’t a princess didn’t matter to Zoe, she had grown attached to the younger princess and it would be hard to convince her to drop it over something such a titles. “All you need to think about is your cute new puppy and how adorable your hair will be when I’m done.”

It was familiar, the feeling of someone weaving her hair. On most days, Emilia would be seated exactly as she were now with maids or lady-in-waiting's doing her hair. But often, Emilia enjoyed leaving her curls loose, with only a small braid to hold up the sides of her hair from falling into her eyes. But today she had planned on staying indoors, at least till her family has returned from the Senate. Having given her prayers to the Goddesses in the small altar in the palace, Emilia had dressed casually, and her hair was free for Zoe to play with as she picked up an olive to pop in her mouth after feeding Zoe.
Peering up at her friend from the corner of her eye, Emilia chuckled at the overexuberant way in which Zoe professed her delight for olives. In truth, the young princess had noticed the way she always asked for them, deducing that Zoe enjoyed the things. "I think Cook did something to them. They're always fresh and delicious. I suspect we also get them shipped in from Attictris every few days." Emilia mused, as she popped another on her mouth, and held another one up for Zoe.
Her ears perked up as Zoe replied her on the Senate, yet Emilia's shoulders drooped once her friend confirmed she did not manage to see either of her family, nor hear of news from the Senate. Knowing the meetings and the enormity of the subject to be tabled for discussion and vote today however, Emilia did not expect neither Minas nor Persephone to be back before the alotted time, but that didn't mean the young princess was not hopeful. Was it too much to wish that all would be well, and the crown would remain within the family? She knew that was her father's dying wish, that the Xanthos family would not just lose the crown from his love to their mother. And she hated to see him die without that fulfilled.
"That's alright, Zo. I assume they would take awhile anyhow. Least I can do is wait." she replied, a tone that was obviously resigned. Watching Labros, the black puppy came to run around Zoe's feet, and then started sniffing at a few of the plucked blooms which had fallen to the ground, nibbling at it, and then backing away cautiously as if it was some great monster that he did not know how to handle. Emilia giggled at the antics of her young charge, and then turned up to Zoe as she spoke again.
"I know, I know. It's just... a lot rides on the outcome of this, I guess. I'm not too well versed in what's been done, but I do know Father and Sissy have been telling me that the future of our House depends on its outcome. So..." the young one trailed off, shrugging. "And you, do I get to do your hair as well then?"

Eyes bright and happy as Emilia spoke of olives, Zoe giggled. "It must be lucky, you know... To have fresh olives every day and a chef that prepares them so... deliciously!" She dreamed of a field of olives, delicous and ripe. Perfect time for picking. And there she would be, a pouch in hand, taking as many that she could fill with their perfect goodness. Tasty, tasy olives... Mouthwatering and eliciting unsatiable cravings in every way. Her hazel eyes sparkled as she spoke in an excited voice, "Do you think that the olives in Attictris are even more fresh and delicious than the ones here?"
The workings of the Senate were uninteresting to Zoe. She never held a care in the world for what went on there, usually. Perhaps today she should have spent more time conversing before coming to the palace. Then, she might have news for her friend. Zoe looked down, a slight feeling of guilt washing over her body. After all, she never wished to disappoint her friends. Today's meeting, of all meetings, should have been of importance for the young Argyris. But, she didn't do anything earlier this morning than gather flowers. The bringing of news probably would have been more accepted... It was just to difficult for Zoe to do things she was uninterested in, though... How could she talk about boring things such as the Senate and what was going on when she had flowers and her friend on her mind?
Zoe worked at the hair more as her friend's voice wavered. The small feeling of guilt spun in her stomach as she continued weaving the stems of the flowers into the dark brown hair. She really should have attempted to obtain some sort of idea as to what was going on... She was irresponsible. The older girl closed her eyes, gathering her thoughts, before refocussing on the hair. She needed to be there for her friend, not dwell on what could have been. "It's not your fault, Em. If something big was happening with my family, I'd be worried too. However, I'm sure everything will work itself out. Your father and sister are really strong! They can talk to the senators. I'm not going to say there's nothing to worry about, but I think we can give faith to the elder members of your family." She smiled, hoping her advice would help her friend. "And yes, waiting is all we can do, for now. So, we might as well enjoy the time we have until they return."
Eyes darting toward the puppy as he played around her feet, Zoe couldn't help but smile. He was just so cute! And as she glanced over at Emilia, she felt a sense of relief to see her friend laughing. Listening to the princess talk again about the Senate problems, Zoe listened quietly, thinking of what to say. It wasn't long before she spoke on beat, "It is important, I'm sure. But, we will know the outcome in due time."
It was then that Zoe finished her friend's braid, tying it off. She then took a step back to admire her work. It was one of her best braids and she was quite proud, and little surprised, by how well it turned out. A smile sewed itself across her lips as she spoke softly, "Anyway, it's done! Would you like to get a look? You were right about the orange ones matching your outfit. It's perfect!"
She then sweetly responded to her question, "Well, only if you'd want to. I already know what color I want!" Zoe could barely contain herself as she let out a giggle.

"I should believe so." Emilia murmured in reply, her smile an amused one at her friend's obvious love for lives. Making a note to have a basket of fresh olives sent over the next time a shipment came from Attictris, the princess continued "Considering it takes a few hours to send the produce over here, it would be delicious when freshly plucked."
Picking at the hem of her dress as Zoe continued working on her brunette tresses, she listened quietly as her friend spoke. Zoe had a point, and Emilia knew that it was unlikely her friend would know what had happened. If at all anything happened, it would have been within the Dikasitrio itself, and other then her sister, Emilia did not know of any other woman who had been into the hallowed halls of the Senate meets, so how would Zoe have any news? Yet the young princess was hopeful, at least.
"I know, Zo. But thanks." she murmured, at least extending her gratitude to the young Argyris lady in her efforts for making Emilia feel better. "I have just never been good at waiting, have I? Perhaps that is why I irritate all of my tutors so. Persephone seems to perpetually have to find me a new tutor." she gurgled a laugh, knowing that Emilia had by now likely went through half of the tutors available in Athenia. Any longer, and her father and sister would have to start hiring tutors from across the seas. Not that Emilia would mind. She was hopeful that perhaps they would allow her to learn more outside then within the walls of the library.
Turning to hold the braid by her shoulder once Zoe announced that it was done, her smile was bright and cheerful as she flashed it at Zoe. "It does match doesn't it?" she replied, not that she was surprised. Emilia had always had an eye for colors which matched, what would go well, and what accentuated someone's features and complexion. It was why she often took charge of Persephone's wardrobe in important functions. Not that their maids or slaves did any worst... but Emilia just enjoyed the process.
"Well I do then. It is only right that I return the favor isn't it?" she murmured. Hitching up her skirts, Emilia patted the seat which she had just vacated, indicating for Zoe to take a seat. Turning, the teenager squeaked when she saw her young puppy scrabbling at a flower, and dived forward to extricate the bloom from Labros's mouth, swatting his snout gently in the way Nicholai had taught her when she wanted to teach him something. Only then, did she straighten up with a sheepish smile at Zoe. "Tell me which color then, and I'll try to do a braid that is just as well as yours. Although I daresay, I do not think it would be as nice. I do not have much practice afterall." she gave a sheepish look, for it was her maids and retinue which did her hair every morning. It was rare that Emilia ever needed to do her own hair.

Zoe's eyes fell with downcast her head was filled with thought. In truth, she really did care for her friend and she wished there was more she could do to make her feel more secure and happy. Whatever was going on at the Senate was surely causing tension for Xanthos and since that was a huge part of her friend, she knew that it weighed down on her. Alas, due to her less than fond attitude toward politics, Zoe knew not of how to console her friend on these matters. She wondered if she could even begin to understand what sorts of laws were being passed. After all, as long as they didn't affect her, she really didn't care. But here it was, affecting her friend, and in turn, it was now affecting her. She felt her heart fall in her chest. If only she knew the right words to say or the right things to do.
Perhaps the distraction she was providing was enough, though? As it seemed the topic of the Senate was finally far gone as they talked of food. Zoe smiled as Emilia spoke about the olives, her mind romancing the delicacies. They were most definitely tasty and juicy. But from the province where they were from? Zoe couldn't even imagine.
The topic soon followed towards tutors and Zoe shook her head. "Oh wow, you still have lessons?" Zoe felt herself grimace at the thought, "As soon as I was presented at court, I asked for my tutors to be dismissed. I now have so much more time for painting and spending time with other ladies." She mused the idea of Emilia being impatient with her tutors. Zoe couldn't help the smile that came across her face, "That's actually a good plan, Em. You just have to scare off all your tutors until Princess Persephone cannot find you a new one. I mean, how many tutors are in Greece?" She chuckled.
Zoe felt her heart touched with warmth as Emilia admired her handy work. The noblewoman nodded with a wide smile as she spoke about how it matched. Her friend was simply beautiful, definitely befitting the title of princess. Happily, Zoe looked at her smiling. She was happy, even a little bit. She was able to help her friend. Zoe felt as if she had accomplished something. She assisted in helping her friend stave off her worries, even temporarily. Everything was going to be alright.
Soon enough, it was Zoe's turn. She sat down on the stool. It was warm from Emilia. She quickly let down her own braid and handed her comb over to her friend. When asked for a color, Zoe smiled happily, "The pale pink ones, if you could." At the mention of it not being so good, Zoe looked down at the floor, soft smile upon her face, "Emilia, whatever you do, I know it will be great. I'm just happy to have you braid my hair!"

It wasn't as if Emilia paid a great deal of attention to politics really. It was a running joke that had Persephone not been born, the crown was as good as gone in the hands of Minas, for Emilia had no head for politics or leadership. The girl wore her heart on a sleeve, and adored nothing more then dancing and dresses, and her family members. In fact, if it wasn't because both her father and sister were so embroiled in the situation, the young brunette probably wouldn't care less.
But as luck would have it, the two people she cared for the most in the world fell right where it mattered, and as such, she had little choice.
Making a face, Emilia nodded in return to Zoe's query. As much as she would've liked it if her sister had called of lessons in lieu of the problems she had to solve in the Senate, it was unlikely. Persephone placed great stock in Emilia's education, and as such was unlikely to allow her to slack. "Sissy doesn't think I can slack. She says I have more to learn." Likely because Emilia had pissed off a few tutors before she eventually got to the ones she had now, but what Persephone said went. "I mean, I don't really enjoy spending time with other ladies either?" she mused. The princess laughed at Zoe's suggestion. The idea had merit - but she was rest assured neither her sister nor her father would be very happy with her doing that, so it was still an option Emilia dabbled with. "I wish."
With her fingers, she weaved the locks, albeit not as well done as Zoe. Emilia was used to others doing her hair for her, and as such Zoe's tresses were a tad more haphazard as she weaved, but she did her best. Incorporating the pale pink blooms in the hair, she did a large braid which petered to a smaller one, before she ended up with a twine, and looped up some of the smaller, white blooms at the end. Only then, did Emilia step back, and gave a light smile. Waving at a maid, she instructed them to bring a mirror, and the servants were quick to jump to attention. Within seconds, a large flat surface was brought in carried by two man servants, laid upon one of the klines against the wall, and Emilia tugged at Zoe to go to admire their handiwork.
Standing in front of the reflective surface, the princess smiled a pleasant smile, doing a small twirl which obviously drove her puppy mad. Labros yapped around their heels as Emilia peered closer, and grinned at Zoe. "Its beautiful. Too bad we have nowhere to go, huh?"
