Anyone who knew Mihail knew that he was not exactly the most open of people. Any emotions he might have had were usually buried under several layers of pettiness and apparent disinterest so that he could display that typically cold Thanasi exterior to which the world was so used. Anything else might have been perceived as weakness, and weakness was not a Thanasi trait. That said, he was the youngest of the brood and, as such, still not as entirely skilled at hiding his emotions as the rest of his siblings: especially not when it came to those which were, as ever, overpowering. Lust, anger, misery...they often got the better of him.
Lust was his struggle this day. Mihail did not do poorly in the relationship department, in reality, he did quite well for himself and was generally precisely where he wanted to be. He liked to think of his relationship with that shopboy as something special, even it only really existed as a way to pass the time while he could not have Euphemia at his side. She was his dearest love - he had told her as much - but misfortune meant they could not be together at present and he was forced to make do in his own way. But it had been a long while since he had last seen Tryphon, and Mihail had found himself slipping into old habits.
See, Thea happened to have a bodyguard who, for lack of a more eloquent term, was gorgeous. Urgh, he'd spent years upon years dreaming of this man, so tall and rugged and just the kind of man that Mihail wanted to drag to his chambers and climb all over and ruin until he couldn't call himself sane any longer. The man couldn't deny that whenever he saw Ophion he saw something flutter deep within him, and he couldn't deny he'd spent more time than one might consider necessary attempting to plot ways of tricking him into his bed. Whenever he'd suffered. Thea didn't know, of course. At least, Mihail had never explicitly told his sister of his feelings regarding the man, though it was foolish to assume when it came to his sisters.
So just watch him try and manipulate her.
He found his sister and brother - Nethis was still in Taengea and Evras, as far as he was aware, was in her new home - in the dining hall that evening for dinner, sliding into his seat with the kind of irritation at nothing that only he could muster. "Didi, Thea," he greeted the pair of them, slumping down slightly before turning to face the older of the two. "Is Ophion around? Only with that fire so recently I'm not sure I want to risk being trapped out in the city on my own, and he's just so...strong. You wouldn't mind if I borrow him? Just for a little while?" He smiled up at her in that childish way he always had, hoping she wouldn't see past to his very obvious intentions.

It was a strange thing, really--beneath notice most of the time, but impossible to ignore once focused on. Once, years ago, the dining hall would have been filled with members of the Thanasi family, but as time had passed, the occupants had dwindled, both due to members of the family leaving or choosing to take their meals at separate times, in separate places.
For Dysius, neither the oldest nor the youngest, it was always slightly odd when so few were present, if only because he was used to being surrounded by familiar--though not always entirely welcome--faces.
Of course, with Mihail and Thea being closer to each other than he was to either of them, he thought, somewhat meanly, that he might as well be alone in the room. Still, when his younger brother greeted him Dysius responded with a raised eyebrow and a brief nod of acknowledgement, and had his hopes for an uneventful dinner dashed the instant the youngest Thanasi son opened his mouth.
For a moment, a bitterly familiar emotion coursed through him, and Dysius was sure his face twitched before he was able to reign it in, fixing Mihail with a narrow-eyed look. It's just that easy for you, isn't it, he sneered mentally, the thought unkind and unoriginal, but he gave voice to it anyway, spitting out an arch "I'm not so sure his bulging muscles will be of much use against another blaze or crumbling embers," before he could fully stop himself.
It wasn't as though he hadn't noticed his sister's more recent acquisition. Of course he had. Dysius had eyes, and the heat that had curled briefly in his own belly upon seeing Orphion was testament to the fact that they still worked, thanks ever so. But he had smothered the reaction as soon as it had occurred, biting his lip and turning his eyes away, reminding himself sharply that it was a doomed thing.
As always.
Still, he couldn't help but wonder what Thea's reaction to Mihail's request would be, so he turned and fixed his elder sister with an inquisitive look and another arched brow. Perhaps in another household he, as the eldest son, might have overridden her preferences, but even if he disapproved of whatever decision she made, she was still his sister, and he would respect it. At the very least, he thought he could trust in Thea's intelligence and perception.

The sun was no longer visible on the horizon afar, and a deep blue canvas dotted with bright stars had taken over the sky that was dominated with shades of orange and yellow just hours ago. On a glance at the outdoors, seldomly anyone could be spotted strolling around on the gravel-filled streets of Midas anymore. The evening was embracing the city with its chilly breezes, and the atmosphere was dense with silence.
Within the Thanasi mansion, dinner time was winding down. In the brightly lit dining hall, house staffs were pouring in and out at every moment, hurriedly carrying on with dinner preparations in hope of finishing the meal in time for their masters’ enjoyment. A long hand-crafted wooden table, the centerpiece of the capricious room, was already adorned with fresh flowers, flickering candles and other luxurious ornaments. On the oak surface, shimmering silverware and jugs of fragrant wine were present, ready to be used in accompaniment with today’s menu.
As the punctual person that she was, Thea entered the dining room minutes after all the courses had been served up. After scanning the food in front of her, which was still piping hot with steam emitting off every dish, the Thanasi girl glanced over at the standing servants and gave them a firm nod, signaling that dinner appeared to be satisfactory and their presence was not expected until further notice. At her permission, they all bowed and quietly retreated to the east wing of the house, which was the designated quarter for domestic retainers.
The vast room was once again vacant, with Thea and her bodyguard the only occupants of the dining hall. The situation might be perceived as peculiar in any other wealthy household, with no maids or butlers awaiting in the background to cater throughout the duration of dinner. But this was the norm in their family. The Thanasis were a private people. Once upon a time, when her mother Ulla was still alive and her father was still coherent, they would usually eat with a selected few servants around. But ever since Dionysios became bedridden a few years ago, a new tradition was born.
Seeing that Evras was married off and residing with the Kotas family, and their dad was no longer well enough to join them for dinner, the siblings had made an executive decision to relieve their house staffs of dinner duties and just eat whenever they could make the time to, no matter alone or with one another. The only mission really was to bring the meal in whole to the dining hall at a set time in the evening, and then retire to the staff annex connected in the next room. If anything occurred, a bell could be rang and someone would come. Otherwise, they were to wait for a chosen window of time. By that time, everyone in the family should have eaten their share, and menial personnel could commence with putting things away and cleaning.
Thea looked around the room. She would not lie, sometimes being in complete solitude like this hit her with a smidgen of nostalgia for the time their family was whole. Within these walls, there were happier memories, ones that were filled with children’s laughter and the aroma of her mother’s handmade pastry.
The sound of someone moving snapped Thea out of her trance. Behind her, Ophion had dragged the cushioned chair out. Once she had lowered herself down on the piece of furniture, he then pushed it in, double checking to ensure that his ladyship was comfortable. ”Enjoy your meal, my lady.”, he urged before flashing her a grin, one that was cheekier than normal now that no one was around them. His pearly whites were drawing her in for a moment there, before Thea mentally shook herself.
Without a word, she raised a fork and pointed to the chair across from her. It was an irregular gesture to overlook a retainer having dinner at the same table as his master, sure, but everyone in the Thanasi family knew that Ophion was more than regular hired help. For years, the brunette had been around the mansion as son to Thea’s previous bodyguard. He was more or less a childhood friend to her anyway, and as such gotten more proximity than any other servant. On occasions when no one else was around for dinner time, she would allow him to eat with her.
They were quietly savoring the avgolemono, a style of Greek lemon chicken soup, content with the other’s presence before footsteps were heard. At the sounds, Ophion immediately straightened his back and coughed a few times, obviously caught off-guard that at least one other Thanasi was coming down so soon. He was just gonna finish his soup and then take a piece of sweets to munch on as he resumed his appointed position at Thea’s back again, but it appeared as if luck was not his side.
As her bodyguard kept his head down and awkwardly fiddled with the bowl of food in front of him, Thea looked up. A rare sight greeted her, Dysius and Mihail both walking into the dining hall without her biting each other’s head off. A small smile graced her lips. ”Mimi, Didi, just in time for dinner.”, she called out to them, imploring them to sit down and join her. Even if it was not evident, on the inside, she was also hoping they would not make a big deal out of the muscular brunette across from her. After all, she was their big sister, and they should know better than challenging their elder.
However, the opposite of that happened. Her brothers immediately fixated their focus onto Ophion as the male in question seemed to glue himself into his seat, doing his best to shrink into the background with his size. Among themselves, it was barely masked that her youngest sibling had taken a liking to the bodyguard quite a bit. So the way he asked for Ophion right away, and perked up once spotting him, did not surprise her. Actually, Thea had always found it quite amusing: she got to observe her giant of a protector squirm. As if to further her entertainment, Ophion then sputtered on his soup for a few seconds and struggled to swallow it down, his ears pink with the knowledge that his love’s brother was fawning over him.
Before she could say anything though, Dysius snapped at Mihail. Surprisingly, the short Thanasi heir seemed to vehemently opposed to his sibling’s flirty words. Well, to be fair, for as long as Nethis had been throwing the idea of marriage around, Didi had always demonstrated extreme disdain towards their eldest sister’s suggestion. And he had never expressed interest in any female, not to the best of her knowledge. Could both of her brothers fancy men?
At that thought, Thea shook her head. Now she had to find a way to break up their bickering again. It had always been her duty anyway, but it got a bit stale now that they were both adults. With a wondering look, the dark-haired woman quirked an eyebrow at Mihail’s puppy eyes and inquired. ”Is it not a bit too late to venture out into the city, Mimi?” For now, she had not flat out refused to lend him Ophion, but at the same time, she as not saying yes. Let’s hope her answer was enough to placate both of her snippy brothers.

As ever, Dysius had felt the need to interrupt with his irritable nature, Mihail shifting his gaze to glare at his brother with a lack of amusement. The youngest Thanasi had never truly understood what led his brother to have such a sensitive nature, whether the attitude was due to his short stature or otherwise, but as far as he was concerned, his elder brother had lived a better life than he, and there was little cause for jealousy. Besides, there was no reason why he should be incapable of requesting use of Ophion himself, unless he feared Thea should deny him such a request. It was no secret that Dysius was closer to Nethis while Mihail favoured the younger of the three sisters. He imagined they would be more likely to indulge him than the other.
"Oh, I'm sure at least one of those 'bulging muscles' will serve me quite nicely," he retorted, the right side of his mouth hitching upwards into a proud smirk at the remark, though his expression slipped to catch Ophion's reaction, quietly enjoying the way he spluttered and gagged on his soup. A thought crossed his mind - 'I could give you something else to choke on...' - although Mihail refrained from commenting out loud, unwilling to potentially annoy his sister and lose all hope of having a few moments to himself with the good-looking guard. "Maybe you should calm down, Didi. I know you've not seen a koleós since your own birth, but there's no need to fuss so."
Thea's answer to his request, however, did not enthuse him. It appeared Mihail's wide eyes and sweet smile had not tricked her into giving him what he willed, at least not without some difficulty. It had not honestly been his intention to visit the city in the current late hour, only to enjoy some quality time with the attractive man, a whole plan efficiently worked out. They would leave for the city - he had intended they take the carriage with the slightly distorted wheel, slow and unreliable - and they would suffer an unexpected hitch in the journey — anything which would cause them to remain trapped there together for a prolonged period. Mihail had made extensive plans for that particular carriage trip, and voicing them fully did not appear an approach which would work in his favour.
He cocked his head ever so slightly to the side, lower lip jutting out in a petulant request that Thea rethink her response. "We need not go now...perhaps in the morning? I will have little of consequence to do, and I'm sure Ophion will not be too occupied - I would love the assurance of his protection." Dysius of Thanasi@thea
