Linos sat at the end of the docks. As the sun was setting, the harbor was becoming quiet and the water was becoming slower, stiller. The scholar would make visits here from time to time, and every single time, melancholy would fill the air. He often checked multiple times that he was alone in the area of the Harbor he was. It was a place he found was less traveled and out of the way. Coming so late in the day often led to it being quieter than usual.
It was always difficult to make these trips, but Linos thought that it was important, needed even. After all, it was to keep him here. To keep his memory. After taking a deep breath, and mentally steadying himself, Linos looked over into the water, seeing his own reflection, as if peering into a looking glass. His heart pounded in his chest as he saw his hazel eyes and dark hair only slightly distorted by the soft, graceful waves. He quickly glanced away, attempting to calm himself.
It was only a reflection, yet it held so much meaning to the philosopher. Even though it was his reflection, and his alone, Linos didn't see himself. He saw another. Someone he wished he could see again. He attempted to relax himself to no avail, before peeking at the water below once more. This is how he would look... Had he not...
Feeling his chest swell, Linos blinked hard, holding back the tears. How could he still cry about something that happened so long ago? He felt ashamed that he still cared. He wondered if he made the trip to do this more often if it would eventually numb him. He rarely did this. But, if he did, he would have to go through days of agony before the numbing would kick in, if it ever would. Then should he stop? No... Then his memory would be completely forgotten. It was Linos's duty to carry his appearance among the living. He swore it on the day it was no longer "them" but "him".
It was then that Linos lowered his head and whispered, "I'm sorry... So, so sorry..." Had he not suggested such dangerous things... Had he only known the repercussions... He then stifled a cry with his arm and sat there, still for a moment, ever so still.

Daniil leaned against the wall and sucked in air. She needed air especially after having taken off in a run, ducking those that would keep her from going off on her own alone.
She was careful to dress like a lady after a bath in lavender scented water. Her hair was done in a plait and she wore a long chiton along with sandals.
A lady just did not up and wander the city alone. Her father would flay her alive if he found out. She was not sure what Maximus would think, but she was sure that he wouldn't give her a tongue lashing for her antics.
She moved through the town and kept moving until she found herself down by the water. She stopped and took time to look around, her hazel gaze came to rest on a lone form seated at the edge of the dock.
The form looked familiar so Daniil moved slowly to join him, careful to keep clean. The sound of her sandaled feet would give her away if he wished to be alone. As she got closer to the man, she realized that the form was none other then Linos, Dys's brother and one of her long time friends and companions.
She tilted her head at his words. What had happened to make him utter those words? She had no idea, but she would find out.
She reached out and laid a gentle hand on his shoulder. At the same time she reached up to tuck stay hairs behind her ear.

As Linos was so wrapped up in his thoughts, he could not hear the carefully placed steps of Daniil behind him. At the cusp of tears, he felt his back give way as he slumped over, tightly closing his eyes as to not let one drop fall from his eyes. He let out a shaky breath when he suddenly felt something on his back. Startled, his body became abruptly tense and his hair stood on end. However, the touch was warm, welcoming. It felt so soft and deliberate that Linos sunk again once more before craning his head to see what the source of it was.
It was Daniil, an old friend of him and his siblings. He felt rightfully embarrassed to be seen in such a state, especially by somebody that would recognize him. However, he wasn't able to change his sorrowful appearance so quickly. He let out a wistful sigh, turning his body around enough so that she would not be facing his back. The memories flooded his mind as he carefully thought of how to place his words.
As soon as he decided what he was to say, fearing that she expected an explanation, he opened his mouth. However, words didn't leave his quivering lips. He sealed his mouth once more, closing his eyes and clearing his throat. However, once his lips parted once more, instead of intelligible speech that everyone was so used to from him, a soft cry left his mouth. He couldn't hold it in anymore. The flood gates opened and he cried.
Linos crumpled into a ball, feeling the grief he had been holding in course like lightning down his spine and through his limbs. He shouldn't have come here. He shouldn't have looked at his reflection. He shouldn't have pondered what could have been. He shouldn't have still cared. He shouldn't have still thought about the past. He shouldn't have, knowing what it would do to him. He shouldn't have, knowing the emotional baggage it carried.
He shouldn't have.
But he did.
And he was going to have to pay the price for his foolish mistakes. He made the dumbest mistakes. Mistakes that caused the suffering in the first place and mistakes that prolonged it. It was as if the experience was a shadow following him as he progressed in age, only to disappear at night and follow him into his dreams. There wasn't a week that went by where the shadow failed to possess him. Keeping his mind busy usually helped with keeping it at bay, but there were always cracks. Always flaws. Always somewhere for it to seep in and remind him. He was at fault. He owed him. But, how was a creature of life to repay the dead?
Feeling the burning tears run down his cheeks, Linos was quick to wipe them away. Yet, it was too late, surely she would have already noticed. It was then that he glanced at her. He was avoiding eye contact before, but now he felt it rude. He didn't know. He didn't know anymore. But he finally calmed down as much as he could to barely speak in a soft, yet shaky voice, "I- I'm terribly sorry you had to see me this way, Daniil."

Daniil's hand worked in small, slow circles on Linos' back as she watched him. When he craned his neck to see her, she gave him a gentle smile. It's alright she tried to say through her expression.
She kept up the small movements as she studied him. She also did her best to ease his embaressment as she dropped to her knees next to him. She heard him sigh and then felt him shift his form so that they were facing each other. She slid her hand over his back slowly. It kept moving until it came to rest on his arm in a feather like touch.
"You know, you do not have to explain Linos." she told him softly. When the floodgates opened on him, she tugged him an then held on to him. She continued holding him as he cried and her hands made their way to his back, rubbing in an attempt to sooth and calm her long time friend. She should have been embarrassed but no. He was her friend and some friends of hers saw sides of her that not even her own family saw.
She met his gaze, when he looked at her, and she shifted so that she could reach up and brush away his tears. "Shhh Linos. she told him. She paused and then added "Your secret is safe with me."

Linos felt weak, pathetic, small... So many things could be attributed to his hysterical state. He wished that he was transparent, unseeable. He did not wish for others to see him cry. It was shameful to his family. What would others think to see a noble man crying? Obviously it would be apparent that he was not educated in etiquette enough. However, Linos was, as all nobles were. He just couldn't hold it in all the time. Sometimes the dams broke and the water fell. It was no fault of his. Or so he tried to tell himself. He very well knew of men who had no trouble with such emotions. In fact, they would turn them into anger. Linos didn't think that was much better, even if it was more acceptable.
The scholar wasn't able to look at Daniil in the eye. He looked downward, trying to hide his face more. Her kind words did help him to feel a little less ashamed. After all, she did say she wouldn't tell anyone. For some reason, Linos was inclined to trust this. His head was foggy and his body felt frail, like glass. He didn't know why or how or what... But it just felt as if the world was coming down around him.
And thus, they stayed like that for a while. Had it been five, ten, twenty minutes? Linos for sure lost the concept of time. Although, however long it had been, Linos's outburst had subsided to steady breaths and sniffles. He wiped the last tears from his face with his hands as he glanced back up at Daniil, quietly. "I'm sorry for acting out... I- He paused, not knowing what else to do than apologize.
He then sat there for a few minutes, contemplating his position. He suddenly felt a newfound trust in her. She used to just be a family friend that everyone had gotten along with. However, now that she had comforted him and helped him regain himself a bit more, he felt oddly closer to her. He didn't know what it was, but he wished to tell her more things, "This is going to sound... Pathetic..." He warned her, taking a deep breath to calm himself down.
"You knew of my twin brother, correct?" It took all of his will power not to cry again at the mention of Lander. How pitiful of him to still care this much about a death that happened in his childhood. Wasn't time suppose to numb pain like this? "I sometimes come here... Every few months... About two or three times a year... And I look at my reflection just to... You know... See what he would look life if he were... Still..." Another tear fell from his eye, preventing him from finishing his sentence. Instead, he looked out wistfully toward the horizon of the sea, hoping that it would pull him back to rationality.

Daniil slowly wrapped her arms around Linos in an embrace that was totally intended to comfort and shield her longtime friend from any prying eyes. Her mind whirled like a whirlpool as she tied to understand what could bring Linos to this state.
When he finally spoke, Daniil let go of him, but she kept her hands resting lightly on his forearms.
"Shhh. It's alright Linos." she told him with a soft smile. "I am not going anywhere." she told it. She meant it. She blinked and then she nodded slowly. "Yes." she said softly.
Daniil reached up and wiped away the tear. "He will always be with you Linos." she told him softly.
She watched him sift his gaze to look out over the water. She shifted, keeping one hand on his arm as she joined him in looking out over the water. She felt comfortable here with him. There was no reason for her to hide or wear a mask with him.

Linos paused, looking out at the soft water waves touching the ever so deepening sunset. As the sky filled with pinks, oranges, and yellows, Linos felt his body relax. He didn't know if the cause was the beauty of the process that the stars took to replace the sun or if it was Daniil's presence. It usually would take several hours to calm down on his own, but he would be at home and safely in bed. Some nights would take the assistance of alcohol to drown out the pain, but tonight, he was feeling himself drawn back to normal quickly and steadily. As if he had fallen and somebody was helping him back up.
He let out a stuttered sigh, finally replying to her, "I think that him always being with me is the problem..." If he didn't resemble his brother, his reflection wouldn't be so heartbreaking. He felt that the memory of his brother followed him everywhere he went. His very own body easily could remind not only him, but others of him. It was almost has if he served as an echo of somebody who once was. He knew it was his duty to keep his memory alive, but it was such a difficult task. After all, it wasn't as if he was given a choice to care. He had to care. An echo doesn't get a choice.
The scholar bit his lip. He felt so comfortable in her presence. It was a strange, but welcoming feeling. He glanced at her, thoughtfully. He had something on his chest that he finally needed to get off. It had been haunting him for years, over a decade. It was something he kept close to his heart, but since they were already in the business of keeping secrets...
Linos firmly placed his hands on the dock as he leaned back, away from the water and glanced up at the soon to be glittering night sky. He sighed, feeling the pain slowly burning back in his head and chest. "If I tell you something, you must swear to never tell another soul for it would ruin me..." His voice trailed off poignantly. He felt his heart sink into his stomach, apprehension filled the air. The salt coming off the sea was the only thing keeping it from becoming stale and still.
Then, Linos lowered his voice into a soft whisper such that even if there were others around, only the lady beside him could hear, "I am the reason that my brother is no longer with us. I was a foolish boy. I encouraged us to play in dangerous weather in a dangerous place. He was even apprehensive... I didn't care. I encouraged dangerous play. I not only lost my brother but could have also lost my sister as well... I'm lucky that both her and I survived. With how careless I had been... We all could be dead." He closed his eyes, a tad shocked he was able to keep himself composed while speaking of such matters. "I might have only been a child of eight years, but I still feel guilty for it all..."
Silence once again filled the air as Linos allowed the sunset to finally end, being replaced by the dazzling stars in the sky. The darkness hid his sorrowful visage from view as he glanced at the moon's reflection on the waves. He finally spoke once again in a shaky whisper, "I owe him... But there is no way to repay him..."

Daniil sat there with Linos watching the sun set, the play of colors and the appearance of the stars.
"Beautiful." she said softly as not to break the moment. She cocked his head as he spoke. "I am sorry and I understand how that can be an issue." she said softly, her face burning in embaressment for the words that she had said to him on the matter.
Daniil watched Linos as he watched her, both wearing similar expressions of thoughtfulness. Her hands still rested on his forearms as they sat there.
"I promise." she said softly as she watched him and listened to his words, her eyes trained on his face instead of the water or the sky.
As the story came to an end her expression showed something that was a mix between pain and admiration, and shock. Pain for the loss of Linden. Admiration for the fact that Linos was still fighting to live everyday of his lie, and shock at the fact that he felt guilt.
"You had no idea what would happen that day Linos." she said in a very soft whisper. "I think the best way for you to repay him is to live a life that would make him proud of you."
She closed her eyes and fought her own demons silently for a few moments. He was not the only one that was carrying around guilt. She was as well.

Linos shook his head, "Even so... I should have had enough sense to not encourage playing somewhere where it was so easy to fall..." It was strange, but he felt as if a weight was starting to be raised off his shoulders. Talking about it was therapeutic in a way. Maybe it was unhealthy to keep such guilt inside for so long. After all, the scholar was quite shy and spent most of his life silently on the sidelines, reading and learning. Rarely did he ever talk about his emotions. He always took priority to ideas; they blocked the pain, after all.
When she spoke of how he could repay his brother, his eyes widened. He felt the life return to his body. He looked in her direction, "That... That's brilliant..." He had never thought of it that way before. He always thought he was repaying his brother by living in a shadow of him, letting his own being and body reflect what could have been. However now that he realized it, when Lander was alive all they did was try to encourage each other to be better and better. They supported each other in their various interests. Wouldn't Lander just want Linos to be successful and happy in life?
These thoughts played in Linos's head as a small, bittersweet smile was drawn onto his face. "You're absolutely right... I think... If Lander was here... He'd want me to be happy. He'd want all of us to be happy. We were always so very close as children." He then returned his gaze to the never ending sea. Although he still blamed himself for his brother's death, Linos now felt he had a way to repay the memory of his brother. A way he very well never saw before. It was as if doors were opening to a better future.
He looked at Daniil out of the corner of his eyes, "Thank you so much, Lady Daniil, for helping me. I never thought of that before... I wouldn't have without you." Linos was never really close with anyone outside his family, however he felt comfortable here. It was an interesting and different occurrence, for sure. But, it just seemed alright. Like nothing bad would come of this. He gave her and endearing smile, "Again, thank you."

"Still you were a child, we all were. None of us were blessed or cursed with the gift of prophecy so none of us would know what would happen that day. You need to stop taking the lash to yourself over this." she tells him gently. "Focus on what is in front of you."
She remembered the day she had heard about the accident. As soon as she could she was out and running off for a place to hide and unleash the floodgates. Of course when she reappeared there were tell tale signs of what she had done, but life went on.
She watched him and smiled softly and blushed at his reaction to her suggestion.
"Your brother will always be a part of you. A part of all of us that he touched." she said softly. Shadows of her own pain appeared in her hazel eyes.
Daniil nodded and then her smile returned though it carried a similar note of bitter-sweetness in it. "He would have wanted all of us to be happy and he would have wanted us to stay close.' she said echoing his sentiments.
Daniil blinked an then laughed lightly. "I will always be here to help you Lord Linos. You have just to ask." she said to her softly.
Her smile returned though her hand hardly moved from his arm. "You are welcome."
She smiled and felt at peace and for the first time she was not fighting being a total girl in public.

Linos remained quiet and pensive, listening to all she had to say. It was then that he noticed her hand was still upon his arm. It felt comforting, yet he was unsure if this was allowed. However, he knew that him crying on the docks was also probably not allowed. He had no problems with it, in fact it was heartwarming and gentle. It made him feel better. It calmed him down from his worrisome mess. It was okay. He was going to be okay. Everything was okay.
As she spoke that she would always be there for him, Linos thanked the gods that it was dark out. The shadows concealed his reddening face. He felt guilty for having her declare such a thing. He should have been able to take care of these matters alone. After all, wasn't that what was expected of noble men? However, the prospect of having somebody to talk to as he did now seemed... wonderful. It was very confusing as to how he thought he should feel about this. Was it okay to have feelings override thoughts? His mind was muddied. But, he knew that it felt positive and alright. After all, what were friends for? Speaking of them being friends, "Thank you, and I to you as well. We can help each other. Would that sound alright to you?"
As his head cleared, a thoughtful and quiet nature took over Linos once more. This was his usual state. However, ideas were not on his mind at the moment. He found a new alliance in Daniil and he was very happy to have this. He thought of how he may be able to pay her back for her efforts, or how he could help her. "How about we form some sort of pact? We can come to each other when we are struggling with something and we will listen and discuss it, not telling another soul besides us? We will be patient and kind with each other as we are now. How does this sound to you?"
Linos felt strangely relaxed around her. In a way that he hadn't really felt around anyone outside his family. It was new territory, but he was ready to walk upon it bravely. He was ready to start making new friends. Maybe it would help him come out of his shell? Only time will tell.

"No man is an island." she told Linos when he spoke about each helping the other. It was how the world worked. Everyone helped each other to some extent."It would be all right."
Daniil also thanked the Gods for the darkness. She was sure he had not seen her own blushing that had happened throughout their time together.
At the mention of the pact, Daniil tossed her head back and looked at the stars before she said "Then we will be seeing a lot of each other." her gaze shifted back to him and she continued "I agree to this pact."
She smiled at him, a genuine smile.

Happy to hearing her agree to the pact, Linos gave her a kind grin. They had made a promise to one another, and although somewhat childish, he genuinely appreciated. He looked forward to being able to have free, open conversations with somebody. Perhaps these conversations could even be of the forbidden fruit of ideas that sometimes played at his mind.
As they sat there, the sky seemed to grow even darker. With his mood much better, Linos glanced in Daniil's direction, however he was starting to barely be able to pick out her features. Soon, it would grow pitch dark and be difficult to find their way back home. With that in mind, Linos spoke softly, "I believe that it is time for us to depart. If we stay much longer, it would be quite the task to maneuver in the darkness."
Linos slowly released his arm from her grasp before slowly standing up and holding out his hand to assist her. He had been very surprised with the turn of events. He was sure had Daniil not been there he would still be quite a mess. Being able to talk about matters of the heart was important. Linos noted this in his mind, burned to stay etched there forevermore. However, he did still feel the guilt of the whole thing. She was probably shocked to see him in such a state in the first place. There was no excuse. He would have to repay her eventually, but he would put that off for another day. He would allow himself to remember tonight fondly.
After assisting her to her feet, he smiled and spoke, "We will meet again soon. Thank you again for all your assistance. I appreciate it so much. Now, I must return home to ruminate on these matters." And with that he was off into the darkness, heading home with only what perspired on his mind.

Daniil relaxed and watched the darkness grow. As much as she did not want to see this interlude end, she knew at least three men that would take her to task for being alone in the city and she did not relish that thought.
"As much as I hate it, I agree." she said softly as she nodded. She took his outstretched hand and got to her feet.
"Yes we will. How about a visit to the cliff-side in a day or so? And it was my pleasure to help you, Give my greetings to the family." she said as she squeezed his hand. She let him go and then quickly headed home, her mind a whirlwind of thoughts.
