Rafail was not so often the kindest of partners. He was far too interested in himself to give much of a damn about the women in his life. The majority, after all, he only saw them once or twice, and that was that - save for those women who made such a fuss about bastards. If they wanted to make claims, then they were free to do so, but they should have been aware by now that he had little interest in such nonsense. Illegitimate children tainting the name of Marikas was not something he wanted.
Yet he had his moments, and today was one of them. In a burst of graciousness, he had agreed to take his mistress Elissa out for the day, and, in an effort to ensure no one would ever think he had been irritated with her or her sister in the first place - although his entire frustration over those telltale markings on his neck had been with Althaia, and he had only opted to ignore Elissa as well out of pure childishness - Rafail had bought her an entirely new ensemble, from the expensive chiton to the jewels with which she adored herself. He may not have been the most generous in his attitude, but you would be hard-pressed to say he didn't take excellent care of his favourite mistresses.
The day so far had been a good one. He had brought her to the theatre in the morning to watch some new play which, although Rafail had not found it to be excessively entertaining, was allegedly supposed to be excellent. The pair of them had had the best seats available, if solely to allow another opportunity for Rafail to show off his influence and wealth, and he had made ever so sure to keep his arm around the woman and keep her assured of his affections. Lunch had been light, with plans to return to the Marikas estate for an elaborate dinner feast that evening, for which he had already hired exceptional entertainment, not to mention what Rafail had been hoping to enjoy for dessert. It might have appeared unorthodox but he was unconcerned so long as his lady seeing the effort he was putting into...his apology? It almost seemed a justification for his behaviour, rare as something like that might have been for him.
"So, my dearest Elissa," Rafail commented as they walked the streets arm-in-arm, a momentary gap in the day's activities. "What should you like to do next? Do you wish to shop or otherwise?"

Over the past two years, Elissa learned to never truly expect anything from Rafail of Marikas, be it love, constant attention, or even an ever-pleasant attitude. Should she do that, the merchant’s daughter knew she’d never find herself disappointed. He was far too unpredictable, his reasons for disregarding her often baseless and bewildering. It’s not that she minded much, anyways, the reprieve from forcing on an innocent grin was always a welcomed one. Yet despite it all, part of her couldn’t help but wondering how much longer this would last. How much longer would Rafail decide to hold onto Elissa and her twin? How much longer did she have before she was tossed back into the realm of the middle class?
So, she couldn’t help the relief that flooded through her when the blond lord showed his face again, not only with the offer for some time together, but also gifts in arm, and who was she to deny him? She painted on her best smile, elicited her best giddy laugh, her eyes brightening at the sight of what he carried, and pretended as if nothing ever happened. Quickly, Elissa changed into the new chiton and donned on a few of the jewels, her onyx curls tame but hanging loose around her face.
And thus, their day began with a trip to the theatre at which Rafail insisted on keeping an arm draped around her, something she wished would bother her, but truthfully the reassurance that he wasn’t about to drop her was well received. And based on his lack of enthusiasm, it wasn’t difficult for Elissa to tell that he didn’t enjoy the play – another place where their opinions differed. The merchant’s daughter adored the theatre, found it all immensely entertaining and wondered if perhaps in another life, in another society, she might’ve found herself as an actress. Though, she supposed weaving through the maze of Athenian politics might’ve gotten her a relatively similar experience.
Elissa ran her fingers through a strand of hair, shooting a glance over at the Lord of Marikas. This was the closest thing to an apology she knew she’d get from him, so why not enjoy his agreeable mood while it lasted? Sooner or later he’d return to Althaia for a while or simply ignore them both and find solace in a woman the young woman cared nothing about. They never lasted, did they? From what she knew about Rafail, it seemed Lis and her twin sister lasted the longest. Should she find pride in that? Probably not, but did she? Yes.
Her head tilted to the side at his question, a shy smile tugging at the corner of her lips, and she patted a small hand against his arm, “Considering you seemed barely able to make it through the play, and you’ve already purchased a lovely gown for me,” she paused, using her free arm to gesture down to the chiton she was wearing, and then leaned in closer, “Is there anything in particular that seems appealing to you?”

Rafail could not help but smirk at Elissa's suggestion that he had barely managed to stay awake throughout the play, appreciative that she must have been so tentative as to notice what he had assumed to be a subtle show of disinterest. He had most certainly not expected to be called out on it. Nonetheless, he put on his best smile, an eyebrow raised in amusement as he looked over his mistress, knowing precisely what seemed appealing to him.
"There is something I'd be interested in," he responded, eyes noticeably running over her frame, though he doubted she minded and if she did mind, he hardly imagined she would say a word. Besides, with a question like that, he would have thought the answer obvious. "I find you to be very appealing indeed." He said it almost teasingly, as though Elissa should have known the answer to that question herself. From the start of their outing that day, it should have been fully apparent what his ultimate intentions were. " However, I have already scheduled that into our excursion. After the dinner I have organised, I thought I might play you a little something, and then we might retire to bed...if such a thing suits you?" It had been phrased both pleasantly and openly but, truthfully, he did not entirely care whether or not it suited her: Rafail did not like his day controlled by the whims of a simple woman.
He paused a moment, stopping them in their path so that he might take a look around at their surroundings and quickly come up with an activity that the pair of them might enjoy. They were in a wealthier part of the city, right in the centre of all the shops and merchants selling all manner of things and, if there was anything Rafail was sure both he and Elissa would enjoy, it was a little shopping trip. Yes, he might have just bought her a new chiton and jewels and everything, but it did pass the time and, besides, he wanted something new for himself as well.
Releasing her arm so that he could wrap his around her waist and tug her even closer than she had been leaning, reaching over to whisper in Elissa's ear. "Come, darling, let me take you to the shops. That gown is lovely, but I think you need something more." He smiled at the girl, leading her towards one of the stalls nearby which appeared to sell some expensive fabrics and jewels that he could already see looking stunning on himself, not to mention his mistress. "Anything you might desire?"
