It had seemed like just another messenger when he’d arrived with the note that evening of the events that had occurred at the stadium in Vasiliadon. Aga and Mel were there, probably some attempt to pacify Evie from attending the races and complaining about the lack of sportsmanship too many of the racers had with their horses, but the visit didn’t take away from the fact that she was glad for a break in her routine. Konstantinos had been up to his usual pranks most of the day. Her brother was going to have to think up some more original ones if he hoped to ever get a rise out of them. He was becoming entirely too predictable.
That evening, they’d just finished dinner with the messenger arrived, delivered the note and galloped off with other dispatches to deliver. The news about the King hadn’t seemed real at first… her cousins chatted with themselves quietly, Konstantinos had kept asking her how this could happen, and her parents had stepped into the privacy of her father’s office in what Evie could only imagine was the two of them forming some sort of plan on how to go forward from here. Leventi supplies would be needed and it would be a formidable move to be there helping the crown in its time of need.
It was safe to say the household didn’t sleep much that night.
By morning it had been decided that Konstantos would accompany Aga and Mel back to his brother’s house, Evie would go to help where she could, and her mother and brother would remain to ensure things smoothly continued at the barony. It wasn’t a perfect scenario but for the amount of time it’d taken to put it together, it was an organized and well-executed convoy of Leventis’ and supplies. The trip drug on and on with a slow pace from the supplies they were bringing and the anticipation of what awaited them.
Darkness had settled when they arrived, the capital was still active even at this hour. Fires were still trying to be burnt out and the smell of the city was undoubtedly going to linger for a long time. There was only one word for it all: Chaos. They safely saw her cousins back to the Leventi mansion. Exhausted from everything, she left her father to sort out the details with her uncle and escaped to a room.
**********
It was past mid-morning when Evie’s eyes slowly pried themselves open. It wasn’t like her too sleep this late, normally she when the first hints of light broke through in the mornings she was on her feet. She could sleep when she was dead. Today was quite different. One of the slaves brought her up some breakfast and helped her dress in a simple chiton, made of a bold indigo blue.
The view from her window showed the city bustling still with activity. Did none of these people sleep? Or had they slept when she had? That seemed unlikely. It looked as if the stadium still smoldered in places. From out of the corner of her eye, she caught a flash of movement below. Her father appeared to busy in helping with the aftermath. Stepping away from the window, figured it was time to put herself to use unless of course, she could find some way of procrastinating a bit. The truth was her morbid fascination with disaster held a bit more interest to her than actually being helpful.
Starting down the hallway, she thought she heard a noise from Pia’s room and paused. It seemed like a good enough way to kill time. Using her knuckle, Evie rapped on the door lightly a couple of times before she stuck her head inside.
“Pia?” Using her knuckle, Evie rapped on the door lightly a couple of times before she stuck her head inside. “Pia. How are you feeling?”

After the funeral Olympia had taken to bed as Helena had ordered. The midwife had promised to return to check on her later in the day, and after she had explained to both of her parents exactly what was going on after the day before, that she was with child and now engaged to the brand new King of Taengea, there had been nothing she wanted more than rest. Propped up slightly on her bed cushions, she'd dressed down to a simple white chiton shift and tied her black curls back in a simple braid to keep them from tangling too much as she slept. The baby had been quiet since she had lain down, and she hoped that meant he was sleeping as she intended to.
The nap hadn't lasted long, but it was enough that she was awake once more and not tired enough to sleep again properly. Without much company, this bed rest was going to get incredibly dull, and even as she longed for someone to peek their head in, the knock at her door caught her attention and she smiled warmly as her cousin entered. Evie was always delightful, the younger girl just as much her sister as the biological ones hiding elsewhere in the mansion.
"Come sit with me Evie, I'm feeling quite well in spite of everything."
She was covered with bruises and a few cuts beneath her clothing, and one red line where the knife from yesterday had been pressed to her throat, but aside from that, it felt as if the emotional trauma was staying remarkably at bay. Her sleep thus far had been dreamless knowing that Desma was nearby and she was safe in her family home. No one could hurt her here.
"I have much to tell you. Unless you've spoken to my mother, and then I assume she's told you everything since she's near giddy with delight."

Evangelina didn’t have any sisters, not that she’d ever noticed with as many cousins as she had. She’d never really wanted for lack of sisterly affection. It was a blessing from the gods that more than she cared to admit was easily overlooked too often, her brother too. It was moments like this that had her missing him a bit more. If he were here, he’d have thought up something to occupy her. Something light and full of mischief. Something that kept her from thinking about how very real all of this was.
Poking her head inside, she saw Pia for the first time since the attack. The door swung open wider, and she felt her heart skip a beat. Olympia was sharp, witty, beautiful… that was the Olympia she’d been prepared for. The Pia she found was turning various shades of black, blue, and purple from the bruises. An angry red line cut across her throat and Evie felt her stomach drop. Every way she’d thought to occupy her mind from the realness of all of this came flooding to her once more.
It was all real. Too real. How could this have happened? She thought it would be fear that would settle in and weigh heaviest upon her but it wasn’t. It was anger. How many people said they’d move the heavens and earth for those that they loved? Evie wouldn’t have moved heaven and earth. She’d have lit the world on fire and burned it to ashes if it’d prevented those she loved from pain. This shouldn’t have happened to Pia.
Taking a deep breath, she stepped further into the room, closing the door as she went. Offering her bedridden cousin a smile as she bit back her anger. May Zeus help whoever had done this if she ever got a hold of them. Perhaps, in too many ways Evie was a bit like a tenacious, ankle-biting terrier but you could bet she’d give as good as she got. In long steps for her too short of legs, she was next to Pia’s bed.
“Pia.” Evie hissed it out quietly. “This is your idea of quite well?” Her big brown eyes flitted over Pia taking in the damage a little closer. She let the breath out and sat down on the edge of the bed next to Pia. Pia looked like she’d been in a tavern brawl and came out on the losing end of it at that. The thought of Pia in a tavern brawl made her blink and then she snickered and shook her head at Pia in amusement. “We have vastly different opinions than of what ‘feeling quite well’ means then, dear cousin.”
“I have much to tell you. Unless you’ve spoken to my mother, and then I assume she’s told you everything since she’s near giddy with delight.”
This caused Evie’s perusal of the bruises on her cousin’s delicate, flawless skin to pause and bring her gaze to her cousin’s eyes. Oh boy! Blinking a couple of times before she shook her head a soft laugh escaping, “I haven’t seen her yet but you’ve piqued my interest now. I can only think of one thing that would really make your mother giddy…”
The laughter stopped and she blinked a couple more times as she tried to put pieces together. Her gaze that had wandered for a moment as she’d been lost in thought dropped back to her cousin. Opening her mouth to integrate Pia, but words didn’t quite make it out. Closing her mouth, her lips pursed then broadened into a smile and finally, the words made it out. “Don’t keep me in suspense… you know it is eating away at me now bit by bit!”

"I didn't die, which is what I thought would come to pass. So, in comparison? I am quite well."
Pia forced a smile for her younger cousin, taking the girl's hand and giving it a reassuring squeeze. Every part of her ached and was going to be sore for a long time, Helena had told her that even after bruises and cuts faded there was still damage beneath to be repaired. And then of course there was the fear. Fear that she would never be safe again, that as the wife of the new king she would become the target of further attacks. Fear that someone would try to kill her to end the life of her child.
The smile that had started to fade returned at her cousin's excitement and Pia laughed as Evie all but bounced for the news. She was glad the terrors of the days before could fade from someone's mind easily at least, and if she could shoulder all of them to prevent the horrors from scarring her cousin's mind, she would bear them gladly.
Shifting excitedly in bed so that the blankets over her stomach were pushed aside and she lay flat on the bed, Pia adjusted so that the swell was obvious to the naked eye instead of hiding it.
"I'm with child."
Her hands settled on the bump that had begun to make itself known. Five months gone, four until she was truly a mother with a child at her breast and she found herself looking forward to it more and more. But, that was not the end of her exciting news. The next bit in fact would become public as soon as it was appropriate.
"And, I'm engaged. To Prince Stephanos."

"And, I'm engaged. To Prince Stephanos."
Grasping Pia’s hand, she returned the gentle squeeze. “Pia…” Her cousin’s name slipped out in soft chastisement. There wasn’t anything she could add to that. Her cousin was alive by the grace of the Gods alone. The fact that Olympia had almost died… had thought she was going to die was enough to fuel the feeling that things were not quite well.
Just because the world was falling around in crumbles around you and you’d managed not to be squashed it didn’t mean that everything was good and everything was fine…. Nothing about all of this was quite well.
There wasn’t any turning back the events that had happened though… Evangelina felt this as deeply as she could without having been a witness. Maybe it would all have seemed more real had the pint-sized Leventi seen in. Despite seeing the capital full of chaos as she’d arrived during the night, she only had the words of others to explain the events to her. Witnessing vs words were very different things.
“Well… should you start to feel unwell with any of this you’ve but just to say so and I’ll do what I can.” She squeezed her cousin’s hands again.
Olympia shifted, Evie’s mouth opened to chastise her for moving around too much but the words died as she saw it. The Bump. Her vibrant dark eyes widened and she looked like a deer caught in a hunter’s sights.
“Oh… I… Pia!” Evie sputtered. There had been rumors of Olympia having a lover but Evie had never put much stock into what gossips said. They’d say anything to influence a person’s position.
Were she and Pia suppose to be happy? She felt like they should be. Or were they not supposed to be happy?
Raising her gaze up from the bump to Pia’s face she knew that this was a happy moment. So a grin spread on her lips but the news didn’t stop there.
‘And, I'm engaged. To Prince Stephanos.’
It was enough to cause her to blink her big eyes a couple more times as she processed all of this. Olympia was pregnant and engaged to Prince Stephanos. Her mouth opened but words didn’t come out again. Instead, she started to laugh.
“I am so happy for you, Pia!” She laughed, “Congratulations.” Shifting her gaze back to the baby bump, she bit her lip. “Has it started to move yet?” Then as if something hit her, the laughter fell away and she arched a curious eyebrow. “Was he your lover? Or is this…?” Closing her eyes, she shook her head and laughed again. “Never mind… the least I know the better. As long as you are happy, Pia...”

Taking Evie's hand and giving it a grateful squeeze, Pia gave a smile and rested her head back against the bed frame for a moment. She was blessed in most of her family, that they could all love and support one another through anything. If what had happened to her had occurred to one of the other women she wouldn't have been able to handle it either, the way Evie seemed to be at a loss of her own.
"Thank you, sweet Evie. If anything comes to mind I will let you know."
Olympia couldn't help but laugh at the confused look on her cousin's face for a moment. It was certainly shocking, and not exactly the way things were supposed to be done, not the way Leventi girls were supposed to do things anyway. But there was something empowering about choosing her own path, her own partner and way forward. Sure it was turning into something different than what she had originally intended, but in a way it was playing out for the best. She was terrified to become the queen of a country, but it was everything she had ever dreamed of, and no amount of fear would keep her from it.
"Yes, he was. Is. And now we are to be married."
She smiled smugly at her cousin's response, no embarrassed blushes to be found on her cheeks as she sat back up against her pillows, both hands folded contently across her stomach. Nodding at the continued questions she poked gently a one place in particular that her son frequently shifted and kicked at to try to rouse him to action.
"Sometimes, he has just started properly moving so that others can feel it. I never knew, how wonderful it could be to be a mother already. I hope he has many siblings."

You don’t choose your family. No matter how many times in your life you might wish you could, you couldn't. Not really anyway. There was no denying that in the Leventi family the blood ran a little hot but tragedy had a way of binding them together. Casting doubts into the wind to be dealt with in their own time. For as temperamental and troublesome they could be, they would pick up the tattered pieces of themselves with the help of one another and they would rally in their own little way. They were Leventis that was their nature.
She returned the grateful squeeze, the lines on her young face softening as Pia promised to let her know if there was anything she could do to help. Some might have thought it was a duty for her to have offered to help but for Pia, it was honest fondness.
Her cousin’s grand reveal had been a bombshell, an eye-opening shocker. They weren’t little girls anymore playing. That wasn’t a pillow under her shift. It was all too real. Judgment was the last thing to be offered from Evangelina though. Life had a great many grey areas, and perhaps Evie considered the way they were raised to be more general guidelines to life, not actual rules.
Yes, he was. Is. And now we are to be married.
It was so difficult for Evie to shift her focus from the baby bump to her cousin’s face, but suddenly there was elephant in the room… or rather a baby. Evie had a general idea of how babies were conceived… it was just the detailed mechanics that were a bit sketchy for the pint-sized brunette. However, it just being the two of them… there wasn’t a blush rise to her cheeks either. No, it was more curiosity than shame.
Pia looked like the cat that had got the cream. The soft smile on Evie’s lips lifted just a bit more in cheekiness and she shook her head as she tried to shake some of the amusement of the whole ordeal.
Evie’s dark, perhaps older then they should be eyes settled on Pia again. Her smile slipping just a little bit. She mentioned happiness about becoming a mother but hadn’t verbally expressed the same elation at her future nuptials. Despite the curiosity burning her up, she didn’t prod her cousin for more on that subject. She dropped her eyes again to the bump as Pia poked it a little.

Shifting on the bed, Evie scooted closer to the foot of the bed and turned so that her thigh and knee rested on the edge of the bed. One hand resting on the other side of Pia’s feet.
“He?” Evie’s throaty little laugh chuckled, “Already decided that it’ll be a boy, have you?” This was all good news in lieu of the tragedy. Pia would be a future queen. It was a terrible way to come into that position but it was some much needed good news for the family… for the country. “And what sort of mother shall you be, my Pia?” Evie was trying to offer a moment of distraction from everything for Olympia. It wasn’t much but maybe it would work for at least a little while.

Evie’s expression read like an open book, and Pia watched her carefully ready to reassure her cousin once again that all was well. It was hard to believe but somehow it must be. A new king, a new queen, a new prince, Taengea was in upheaval and suddenly her reactions and words would be under closer scrutiny than ever before. She needed allies everywhere, especially in her own family.
The way the world had been thrown into turmoil was exhausting, and she found that the lightness her cousin had brought into the room was turning. Instead of being afraid to rest, now that someone she trusted was present her eyes felt heavy but she didn’t want to send her away. Resting both of her hands on her stomach, she smiled as her younger cousin shifted closer and raised a brow at her when she questioned her calling the baby a he. He had to be a son, a boy to continue the Mikaelidas line and cement her place as queen.
”A son first for his father, I hope. After everything Stephanos has been through, it may help him heal.” When she had been dragged into the circus her thoughts had been muddled, but as she had expected to die her family had been at the forefront. The thought that her sister’s and cousins would have to mourn her too soon.
”I hope I shall be a good mother. I never gave it much thought, but then I remember my mother and yours and Desma and how they taught us everything. We have the best help to become good mothers, you and I.”
Pia had always adored her aunt Ava, Evie’s mother was sweet and strong though very unlike her own. Between them and the constant aid of Desma, she would try to become the best of all of them.

“The Gods dare not deny you that…” Evangelina objected, her tone unwavering despite her silent plea that the Gods would show a bit of mercy in this respect. The Leventi family had been all too familiar with the lack of heirs but maybe their luck had changed upon the birth of Konstantinos. Brushing back an escaped strand of her chestnut hair, she tucked it behind her ear.
So much pressure pinned upon an innocent child, her brother still wasn’t wholly aware of how important he was. She bit her lip a little to keep her grin in check at that thought. Oh, Konstantinos would be a terror if he knew that… It was definitely a good thing he didn’t know. A typical adolescent caught between being a boy and a man and when you through in a pinch of mischief and the Leventi manipulative skills… Evie could only imagine how that would play out. There would be no boundaries. He would push the limits too far.
The pressure her brother felt wouldn’t even be a pinprick to that of the son in Pia. He’d have Pia though, and hopefully, Stephanos was happy about the news. The Leventi ladies would, of course, be there to add their advice and pampering. Olympia would probably be so sick of all of them that’d she banish them. That broke her into another smile.
Evie softened her smile and nodded her head as her cousin spoke. There was no lack of strong Leventi women to model her parenting style after.
“Yes. Yes, we do have some very special mothers. Speaking of which, I can understand why your mother is floating in the clouds now though. Heavens, I am surprised we didn’t hear her overjoyed shrieks all the way to Acharist.” Evie chuckled.
Sucking in a breath again, she met Pia’s gaze. “My Gods, you are going to be Queen Olympia.” Evangelina’s dark eyes studied her cousin and then the corner of her lips lifted up impishly, keeping her inner thoughts to herself as she added. “It has quite a nice ring to it though.”
“Your prince is a lucky man, I hope he realizes that…” Evie teased. “If he forgets please inform him that your sisters and cousins will gladly remind him of that little fact. You might also remind him that the Erinyes have nothing on the fury of a Leventi woman.” She winked a dark eye at Pia. Despite her teasing tone, there was quite a bit of truth to her words.
Slipping off the bed, Evangelina stood and stretched her still sleepy limbs. “But you need rest, you are resting for two now. Your greedy little prince needs you at your very best.” Moving towards the head of the bed she smiled and reached for Pia’s hand to squeeze it. “Father brought some supplies to add the victims from the circus attack. I’ll make sure Byrony sees you get some more of the honey and herb balm. You look like you could use all of it we could bring you.” She squeezed her cousin’s hand and prepared to leave Olympia to get some more rest.
Leaning down she placed a chaste kiss on the top of her cousin's head. "I think we are staying for a few days before we return to Acharist, if you need anything don't hesitate to call for me. I am so happy and excited about your news. You'll be a great queen and an amazing mother, Pia." With that Evangelina turned and headed out of the room. She had to get a move on it if she intended to get anything else done today.
