Physical Geography
Location The lands belonging to Bedoa'mt are technically the largest on Aeipathy and span the northern region of the African continent, from the borders of K'm't to the far western side of the Mediterranean. However, these lands are left unclaimed by any one monarch or tribe and are not thought of as a single state or territory: they are open desert plains that belong only to nature itself. They are merely the ever-changing home of the nomadic gesins who travel over the dunes. Maps

Historical Age History is told orally in Bedoa'mt and rarely kept in written form. Their age and history, therefore, is unknown. Most elders of the Bedoan gesins will tell the tale of how their people have been ever moving for the last "hundred generations". If accurate, this would make the beginning of the nomadic Bedoa'mt gesins 4,000 years ago. The desert has been populated, however, long before this and the origin stories of the Bedoans talk of how the land was once lush and fertile until human greed saw the sands swallow all life. This was when the gesins were formed and forced to travel in small, nomadic groups in penance for their hubris.

Population Bedoa'mt is the least populated land on Aeipathy, particularly when considering its vast lands. Each gesin of Bedoa'mt can range from eighty to eight hundred people depending on current birth and death rates. These gesin travel as nomadic groups around the Bedoa'mt area. Whilst they never permit themselves to stay too long in one area, the gesins do have specific regions and routes that they prefer to travel depending on the time of year. A very small number of individuals are condemned as The Lost and must travel alone over the sands.

There are no cities or towns in Bedoa'mt, besides a few portside residences on the northern coast. Bedoan gesins travel with their homes, packing and moving tents from one oasis or dune to the next.

Life is hard in Bedoa'mt and pivots on the essentials for survival. Water, hunting and social responsibilities make Bedoans slow to trust but fiercely loyal once you are considered a brother to their people. This makes them highly xenophobic, distrusting and suspicious of outsiders both between the gesins and even more so across land borders. A history of being taken advantage of by the Remetch'kmt makes Bedoans particularly wary of anyone from K'm't despite them being their main trading connections.

Size and Travel LatitudeFrom the far eastern border with K'm't to the western edge of the Mediterranean Sea. This is a large area of sandy dunes that are hard to traverse. For efficient travellers, seafare along the northern coast is best. For the Bedoan gesins, land travel is required and always on foot, not horseback.

K'm'tIn the north-east of the African continent lies K'm't. This land is immediately east of Bedoa'mt. Travellers can journey by sea along the northern coast between Bedoa'mt and K'm't or they can travel via land. Travel varies depending on where in Bedoa'mt a character begins their journey but can go up to the full time taken to travel Bedoa'mt's latitude (see above).

OstjörðOstjörð monopolises the north-western corner of the European continent. The easiest way to reach their lands is by crossing the Mediterranean Sea to Roma then travelling the longitude of Roma (in the Size and Travel section of Roma's Land page).

AnachronismAll travel times / distances on Aeipathy have been fictionalised (to a point) to create a realistic but workable roleplaying world. For ideas on how to "wiggle" your travel time to meet your roleplaying needs, see the Lands Overview page or message our staff team.
Climate Climate doesn't particularly change in Bedoa'mt. The desert lands are always hot, dry and dusty. The Bedoans, therefore, don't really mark the passage of time with seasons but with biannual cycles, based on how long the sunlight hours last.

Referred to AsClimate / Weather
Spring / SummerSeason of the SunIn the warmer half of the year, the temperature rises slightly and there is zero rainfall. As clouds are rarer in these months, the night-time temperatures drop lower than during the winter and frost can even be found on occasion. Dust storms are a greater risk at this time of year. Days are longer in this period but travel slower as gesins pause to take shade during the hottest hours of the day.
Autumn / WinterSeason of the MoonIn the darker half of the year, gesins tend to travel more, staying warm on the move and taking advantage of the cooler daytime temperatures even as the sunlight hours wane. If cloudy, nocturnal hours are actually more temperate. If clear skies, the temperature can plummet after sunset. Rain is more common at this time of year but still rare.
The Provinces
Settlements There are no settlements or town in Bedoa'mt. The gesins that call this land home travel with their furnishings and set up clusters of tents whenever they put down roots. Even the portside "villages" on the northern coast are more fabric than solid structure. The only area that is recognised with defined boundaries is Oorsprong, the sacred oasis of life for the Bedoan people. Oorsprong
Wildlife and Resources
Flora Flowers are rare in the Sahara though several of the edible plants in oases and in the shade of sand dunes can produce little flower buds at certain times of the year. Flowers are less noticed for their beauty in Bedoa'mt than as markers for fruit later in the season like prickly pears, white raisin, the apple ring acacia, umbrella thorn and white thorn.

Hardier herbs like thyme and mesquite can grow in the Sahara and are often used to season meat and vegetables in the Bedoan diet. The leaves and roots of these plants are also used for medicinal purposes.

Agave, chia seeds, and pine nuts are all good staples of Bedoan cuisine, and are often roasted in the hot sand with sweet meats and breads.

The date palm, pine tree and multiple forms of cactus make up the rest of the limited foliage in the desert and are more commonly found around oases and nearer the northern coast.

For more information on crops, vegetables and edible flora see the Food and Cuisine section in Bedoa'mt's Social page.

For more on medicinal herbs and healing practices see the Medicine section of Bedoa'mt's Science page.

Fauna The Bedoa'mt lands are extensive and span the entirety of the Sahara desert. Whilst wildlife seems sparse on such a vast horizon, the desert is actually full of life. Mammals found on the sand dunes include the addax, fennec fox, jackal, hare, dromedary camels, gazelle, wild dog, xerocole, jerboa, barbary sheep, baboon, desert mouse, fox, polecat and cheetah. None of these animals are domesticated and all are willing to fight or fly when approached by humans. Some gesin will breed and travel with goats or pet dogs but these are additional mouths to feed and therefore uncommon.

Reptiles are numerous in the Sahara and often hide under the sand. Vipers, lizards, rattlesnakes and scorpions can all be found here. Along with arachnids, scarab beetles and the sahara frog.

The skies of Bedoa'mt are often littered with scavenger birds circling in anticipation, including vultures, falcons and eagles. Silverbills, firefinches and the white crowned wheatear are also common birds in the area, whilst ostriches can be found running on land.

For a full breakdown of ingredients and foodstuffs and how they are used for cooking and / or medicine, see our Flora and Fauna database.
Natural Materials Fresh Water
Water is the most sacred and scarce of resources in Bedoa'mt. Some areas of the desert are natural oases and offer small pools of fresh water from underground vaults. Some valleys in the sand dunes can catch the limited rainfall in the darker seasons. Characters in this region must travel with most of their necessary water supply and be very careful not to run out. Water skins can be refilled in these special points across the sand dunes or in the few wells that have been dug along the eastern K'm't border.
Crops
Crops are unlikely to thrive in the Saharan earth but this is an irrelevant point. As the gesins of Bedoa'mt are nomadic, they do not stay in one place long enough to reap the benefits of a harvest. Some have annual cycles of travel and may bury or store goods in strategic locations. But most will not waste the water or resources to try and grow something that they may not be back in time to take advantage of.
Ore
There is no mined ore in Bedoa'mt. The Bedoan people do not value shiny metal when water and food is clearly more precious. Why waste the time digging in the earth for something that has no purpose?
Timber
With little in the way of foliage, woodland and timber is out of the question in Bedoa'mt. Light wooden beams are needed for constructing the Bedoan hawe tents but these are often bought at the north ports or from Remetch'kmt traders in the east and passed down through the generations.
Vegetables
Lentils, beans and dried foods are more common than fresh vegetables in Bedoa'mt. These can be carried great distances in bags and sacks and are of far more use to the Bedoan diet.
Meat
Meat is the largest component to cuisine in the desert. Almost any and all animals in Bedoa'mt can be hunted for food and the Bedoans are uniquely skilled at knowing how to kill and consume otherwise poisonous or venomous creatures. Insects, beetles and arachnids are also common appetisers if cooked correctly. Meat is cooked either beneath the hot sand or frying stones under the sun then cured or salted for storage and travel.
