The Sphinx Gate opens to the south, leading towards Kizzuwatna. Twin sphinx statues, poised atop the high stone pillars, gaze outward with serene, enigmatic expressions, their wings unfurled as if ready to take flight. This gate’s architecture favours elegant arches and intricate stonework that seem to contrast with the mass people of people constantly passing beneath. Decorated with carved reliefs of mythical creatures woven along its inner walls, the Sphinx Gate is adorned with polished stone mosaics that catch the sun, casting shifting patterns of light and shadow, giving this bustling passage an ethereal quality, as if the entrance to Hattusa is not just that, but an entrance to another world.
