The Kings Gate, facing east towards Carchemish, is a symbol of Hattusa's divine authority. Atop its towering pillars sit majestic statues of the goddess Ishtar, with regal, feminine faces and outstretched wings atop a lion's body — the statues watch over the myriad people who use this entrance to the city each day. A bronze relief of the royal family's emblem is set into each pillar, polished daily by attendants to honour Ishtar and the royal family alike. At midday, sunlight filters through hidden slits in the walls, casting beams that frame the city in a radiant halo, as if Ishtar herself is blessing those who enter; as such, the gate has become a place of ritual, and many pause to press their palms to the royal emblems as a mark of respect and protection before passing through.
