The Temple of Ishtar is distinct in its open, welcoming design. This sanctuary stretches wide and low, with a single expansive floor that invites the city’s peoples into its vast embrace. The temple’s exterior is marked by a large spring-fed pool, reflecting the stone columns and flowering shrubs that line its edge, a serene prelude to the sacred space within. Inside, the chamber is broad and unobstructed, with high, intricate latticework ceilings allowing sunlight to filter gently through. People come to pray quietly, punctuating the air with their murmurs, and offerings are laid out on attractive marble counters in the hopes that the goddess is listening.
