On this page you'll find key terminologies, basic political, climate and economic information and the land census, with links to all current in-play and open characters within Assyria. Most of the information below will also direct you to other pages where you can read up on the topic in more detail. If this handy overview is still not getting you where you need to go, please don't hesitate to contact a member of our staff team on site or on our Discord server. INSERT SAMPLE VISUALS FROM VISUALS PAGE General Climate INSERT FROM LAND PAGE Method of Rule INSERT FROM LAW PAGE Social Tolerance Assyria is a proud and defiant nation with limited tolerance for difference. They respect tradition and the social protocols that have survived the trials of history. Characters who identify as minorities and are looking for stories of conflict and growth may find a home in this land but, for a more tolerant acceptance, should look elsewhere.

The land of Mitanni has only recently been annexed into the Assyrian empire. However, their close geography and shared history mean that their religion, ethics and social norms were already in sync with the Assyrian ideals. The biggest disruption between these lands are divided monarchial loyalty (to the Mitanni or Assyrian kings) and national identity (whether Assyrian or Mitanni).

For an overview of the social customs and ideals of the Syrians, see The Syrian People section of Assyria's Social page.

For more detailed information on the Syrians' social opinions regarding sexualities, race, neurodivergence and all other forms of prejudice, see the Morals and Prejudices section of Assyria's Social page.

Forms of Address Using the correct form of address is highly important in Assyria. It helps keep the immersion of our roleplay era intact but is also sacred to the characters in-play. Honour and respect are huge parts of their social network and getting an address wrong could have catastrophic results.

Whilst there is no golden rule on when it is acceptable for a character to slip into informal address, a good rule of thumb is the measurement of two social ranks. The Ranks below are listed in order. If your character is just one or two ranks lower than the person they are addressing, it may be suitable for them to use an informal mode of address. Any lower and you are safer sticking with the formal.

Ruling Powers Assyria is an absolute monarchy. Laws are made and governed by the Lugal. These decisions can be swayed, persuaded, bribed, negotiated or blackmailed in particular directions by the Council of Advisors, composed of the eleven leaders, (or Angals) of the Assyrian Houses but the final decision and power always rests with the king.

Mitanni is technically a part of the Assyrian Nation. However, they were an independent empire prior to their annexation. When the conflict between Mitanni and Assyria finally ended nearly six years ago, the peace treaty dictated that the Mitanni lands could be ruled independently within their borders but must bow to the authority of the Assyrian king when matters concerning the Syrians were at play. The Mitanni leader is therefore a Lugal (king) of his own lands but holds the inferior seat of Angal or Advisor in the Council of the Assyrian Lugal. There is no longer a Council / Senate within Mitanni itself.

Immediate Royal Family The 'immediate royal family' includes all living parents, children, spouses, or siblings of the current monarch (the Lugal). Those born to the extended royal lines grow up to become the nobilities of the Assyria Court (see below). The following are listed by order of descendance (male first), not age.

Royal and Noble Families The only 'royal' houses of Assyria are the rulers of the entire nation: Kushiq, and the ruling house of the Mitanni municipality: Tyareh. All other houses (or Bêlu's) in Assyria are of equal rank whether they possess royal bloodlines or not. They are all classified as nobility. Nobles who possess royal blood are given no 'Prince' or 'Princess' title - they are simply referred to as Lord or Lady, as appropriate. There is no legal or political benefit to having a family of royal heritage. Outside of Kushiq or Tyareh: all are equal.

Provincial Leaders Each province in Assyria is led by a noble family. The head of that family is the Angal and leader of the province and has a seat on the Council of Advisors. Below is a table copied from our World Contribution page. Any provinces that are indicated as 'Open' can be claimed by new characters if a member wishes to create a new Bêlu (Noble House).

INSERT FROM WORLD CONTRIBUTION PAGE

For a more detailed list of each province and its industry and benefits, see the Province Listings section of Assyria's Land page.
Military Leaders Assyria has a centralised army, meaning that soldiers from all provinces, all over the nation, culminate in numbered sargons (such as the 25th Sargon): not provincial militia as in other lands. Each sargon is specified as either charioteers, cavalry, archers, siege engines or infantry. The leaders of these sargons are Master Sergeants. Master Sergeants have several Sergeants under their command, leading teams within the sargon. Master Sergeants answer to the few Generals of the Syrian armies and the Generals are subservient to the Lugal, who is legally Commander-in-Chief of his own forces and more likely to go to war at the head of his armies than most other nations.
