The Circus Flaminus is know throughout the Urbs Roma, and rightfully so, for it is a spectacle to attend. A grand arena where the roar of the crowd mixes with the thunder of hooves, the vast racing circus boasts an oval track and towering stone stands. Its outer walls are decorated painted carvings of past victories, with banners in the winners' colours fluttering high above. On race days, the stands swell with spectators shouting for their favourite teams and waving flags: the circus is so large it can easily hold tens of thousands on a busy day. Within the arena, the sandy track churns beneath the wheels of chariots, kicking dust high into the air as they race. Laps are marked by large bronze dolphins, for dolphins are the swiftest of all creatures. At other times, the arena is used to host gladiatorial games, but this is just as much a performance as the races. Visiting the circus is a common family day out in the city, and many are glad to boast of their favourite racers and fighters as they pledge their undying support.
