He was hot and sweaty and miserable, and the trudge back up to the upper levels had never seemed further. Silanos felt cheated: he had been told by more than one of the men in the unit that it would get easier with time, but it did not fucking feel any easier. His legs still felt like lead, his shoulders ached, and he was pretty certain he’d pulled muscles in places he didn’t even know existed. And the most miserable thing about all of it? Knowing that he’d have to repeat it all again tomorrow.
When the young lord had first found himself hauled down the barracks and subjected to the hellish intervention his brother had seen fit to commit him to, without his say so, Silanos had been fully convinced that he would be able to talk his way out of it after the one day. He would argue, or cajole or just infuriate Timaeus so much with his whining that his elder sibling would write the whole thing off as more trouble than it was worth.
Then one day had turned into two, and Sil had begun to worry. So he’d towed the line, stopped acting up and actually tried a little, which was highly out of character and almost without precedence. Perhaps then Timaeus would see that he had made his point and they could draw a line under the whole sorry production.
But even when he had done that, his brother had not relented, and Silanos had begun to realise that this was not simply a punishment, that Timaeus actually wanted him to see this through. Not sleeping and trying to keep up with the physical demands that were expected of the soldiers was proving more than a little unpleasant, and something was going to have to give. Right now, Sil hoped it wasn't going to be his knees as he dragged himself back home after another too long day.
He didn’t even have the semi-tolerable company of Daxos with him, but instead a guard he did not know at his back, which for some reason put Sil in an even worse mood, a fact that probably did not work in his favour when he found his path crossing with one Lady Imeeya of Drakos. Stepping out of a carriage, she was, of course, irritatingly pristine in her appearance, and Sil was only too aware of his own, less polished, countenance. His gaze narrowed a little, the last time he had seen her, the girl had seen fit to throw a glass of wine over him. The time before that she had slapped him around the face. They had not had what could be termed a cordial relationship thus far. And so when Silanos felt the sweep of her gaze over him and imagined the haughty expression that would surely follow, he sketched an exaggerated bow towards the Drakos girl.
Maybe it was his tiredness making him reckless, maybe it was the desire to needle her a little after she had thrown his goodwill quite literally back in his face at the banquet, but Silanos had spoken as he’d drawn back to his full height, his words just loud enough to reach Lady Imeeya.
“Well, well my Lady Imeeya. Off wenching again are we? The docks are that way, you know?”

“Well, well my Lady Imeeya. Off wenching again are we? The docks are that way, you know?”
The rumors of her dalliance with a pirate had not left Imeeya in good stead with her mother. In order to ensure that no such behavior would happen again, Imeeya had been relegated to the house, where her mother could better keep an eye on her daughter’s action. The pleas that she had done absolutely nothing wrong had fallen on deaf ears, and Imeeya had spent the last few days bored as she was not allowed the freedom to roam about the city that she had enjoyed on her own. It was that morning that Imeeya had concocted a plan that would get her out of the house, at least for a little while. She had told her mother that she needed to visit the temple, which as much as it was calculated to get her out of the house, was not a lie. Ever since Vangelis had told her about her mistake in Taengea, she had felt the need to go seek the wisdom of Athena. The rumors swirling about in court only made her feel a greater need to understand where she was making such huge errors in her life to lead to such disaster.
Imeeya had thought she had found some peace in her visit to the temple and was heading back home in a much lighter mood than she had left the house that morning. However, the good mood she had attained didn’t last for the entire journey home. Just as she was stepping out of the carriage she spotted a man who was the last person she wanted to see at the moment, Silanos of Valaoritis. He seemed to be showing up everywhere these days, she didn’t think he could be spending more time around her if he was actively trying. Certainly, he wasn’t actively trying? Had he grown bored of trying to pursue Asia and was now trying to go after her? Well, he certainly wasn’t going to get very far.
She didn’t acknowledge his presence and started towards her house when he called after her. Imeeya spun on him in anger. How dare he? Out in front of her house for the whole world to see and hear? Did he wish to ruin her reputation so completely? She huffed angrily over towards Silanos, and addressed him in a low hiss. “How dare you repeat such baseless accusations about me in front of my own house for any passerby to hear?” She could feel the rage building within her, and her voice raised as she continued. “You’d do well to remember that I know of your own transgressions which have a much larger basis in fact. I don’t imagine you would like for those to get back to your brother?” Imeeya crossed her arms, tilting her head in a question that almost dared him to push the issue. She would just love to see the look on Timaeus’s face when he found out what his brother had done. In the back of her mind, she knew the consequences were likely to be just as bad for it to be known that she had put herself in such a situation, but at this moment, the thought of vengeance made that matter very little.

It became clear very quickly that Lady Imeeya was not yet ready to jest about the rumours that had circulated about her. Silanos rocked back on to his heels as she stormed over towards him, wondered if actually he had the energy to deal with her. It was a very rare moment of regret for the Valaoritis lord, and once that only intensified as the blonde threatened to speak to Timaeus of that litle mix up with the wine.
He bristled. “ That was a accident.” he retorted, casting a hasty look over his shoulder at the guard that tailed him in case the man was listening. “ And I have apologised!”. At least, he thought he had...had he? He definitely remembered at least starting a letter. Perhaps he hadn’t sent it. Fuck. Silanos glanced at the fierce expression that Lady Imeeya wore and decided that contrition would probably not do any harm right then, despite how irritating he found her sanctimonios attitude.
“..I’m sorry anyway. I was just joking. Of course no one thinks you’ve been cavorting with pirates. You’re far too straight laced.” He made certain he was far enough away that she wouldn’t reach him if she decided to take a swing ,Sil had enough aches and pains already without adding any more. Besides, Lady Imeeya of Drakos had claimed her free hit and he wasn’t about to let her do it again. Not for repeating something that half of Midas was saying anyway.
But he could do with ensuring she didn’t go blabbing to Timaeus about that unfortunate poppy incident. Honestly, he had been sure that Daxos would have taken the opportunity to drop him in it, but it seemed like the soldier felt he’d redressed the balance between them on Sil’s first day training, which was fine with the young lord. He was walking a fine line with his brother, he’d realised too late, and he couldn’t afford to aggravate him any further. Reaching for something that would steer them on to a less dangerous ground, he changed the subject. Sort of.
“I’m surprised you’ve been allowed out, if I’m honest. I thought you would be being chaperoned to within an inch of your life. Some people are just more fortunate in their relatives I suppose” He made reference to his own situation, though he scarce remember what the Lady Imeeya knew or didn’t know. What had he told her in the tavern?

It was almost disappointing how quickly Silanos had backed down under the threat that she might tell Timeaus about drugging her. There was a small part of her that almost relished the idea of having an argument with the reckless young lord. However, there was also something very satisfying about having him capitulate almost immediately. Imeeya couldn’t help but let that go straight to her head. Or perhaps she had gloated too soon, he had seemed to make “straight-laced” sound like an insult. She opened her mouth to protest, only to slam it back shut. Oh that was clever of him, going to make her refuse that she was straight-laced. He would like that wouldn’t he? She just knew Silanos would mock her endlessly if he got her to say anything that even implied that she had been dragged down to his level.
Of course, he swiftly moved away from that topic to a much safer one. Or safer for him anyway. As usual, all of his assumptions about the situation were completely wrong. Ever since her mother had heard the rumors about her dealings with the pirate, Imeeya had barely been allowed out of the house, and those times that she was were under strict supervision. Imeeya frowned at Silanos. “What part of this,” Imeeya gestured at the carriage she had just gotten out of, “indicates that I have been left unchaperoned.” Imeeya may have been able to get out of the house to go to the temple, but she certainly hadn’t been let out alone. “This is the first time I’ve been out of the house in days. And for what? Getting saved by some thugs down at the docks by a pirate?”
Imeeya wasn’t sure what it was, if it was just that she didn’t care about Silanos’s opinion of her, or just that her frustration had built to such a point that it was all going to boil over right at that point, but she found herself unable to stop her diatribe about how unfair everyone had been to her. “My own mother refuses to believe that I was completely innocent in all of this. So I fail to see how this makes me somehow lucky that I have the family that I do.” She didn’t even bring Asia into the conversation, who had also refused to believe that she had not been involved with the pirate either, at least not without having to discuss it first.

Sil grit his teeth at the self-satisfied expression that graced the Drakos girl’s features, reminding himself that this was for the greater good, also known as his own personal safety and wellbeing. And there was a mild reprieve when she seemed to catch on to the edge to his words too, opening her mouth and then closing it again in a manner that him stifled a smile. Which was she going to own - being an uptight little madam, or some slattern who swanned around with pirates in her spare time?
He swept in again before she could speak though, and this time his words brought a scowl to her face and that familiar haughty attitude came flooding back. She was so easy to goad, it brightened his day a little if he were honest. The Lord followed her gaze to the carriage and arched a brow at her show of temper. Tempted to tell it her could be a lot worse, instead he arranged his features into a sympathetic expression, tilted his head to the side a little and eyed Imeeya.
“That does sound frustrating. I can appreciate how it feels when people just want to believe the worst of you” His voice flattened at the end as he continued to watch her. He could have said more, because gods knows there was a story to be told about how things had a way of coming round and biting you in the ass and how maybe she wouldn’t be so sanctimonious now, but Silanos didn’t say it, instead blew out a sigh and gave a shrug..
“Poor, sweet Imeeya. So unjustly accused. All you have to do is keep your nose clean for a few days, there will be more gossip to fuel the rumour mill soon enough and everyone will forget about what you are absolutely innocent of” he drawled, suppressing a yawn.
It must be a shock indeed for the perfect little lady to find herself at the wrong end of scandalous whispers. He was more accustomed to it, and usually, it didn’t bother him in the slightest. It was only just lately that his own misdemeanours seemed to have developed the irritating habit of catching up with him. Even so, the knowledge wasn’t quite enough to stop him running his mouth. It was just too good a sport with the Drakos heiress.
Silanos looked her over again and then added ““Alternatively, you could do something more scandalous, and then they'll shut up about it too. I’m available, if that's your preferred route.”

Imeeya wanted nothing more than to smack the smirk off of Silanos's face. He seemed to have learned from their last encounter to stay out of arm 's reach. It was absolutely infuriating. He was certainly playing at being nice, but he couldn't think she didn't hear the biting implications in his tone. They weren't the same. For one, Silanos had not been unjustly accused of anything. His reputation had been entirely earned by his own actions. "People think the worst of you because you keep doing horrible things. Don't even begin to pretend like that that makes me the same as you.” Imeeya's eyes flashed in anger at the implication, but that didn't seem to deter the man 's efforts to continue poking fun at her under the guise of friendliness.
Imeeya couldn't help but bristle at Silanos's mock pity of her situation. Perhaps it wasn't as bad as whatever trouble Silanos had found himself tangled up in now, but that didn't make her suffering meaningless. Nor was she as convinced that it would blow over with no permanent consequences for herself. It was one thing for a man to have a promiscuous reputation, it was quite another for a woman. A husband would not want to have to spend any time worrying whether or not a child was actually his. If a rumor like this stuck it could completely destroy her credibility.
Imeeya had to admit that in some of her darker moments she had considered what Silanos suggested. Well, not with him, obviously, but the idea that if she was going to have a reputation for doing something bad, she might as well properly earn it had crossed her mind. Not that she was about to tell Silanos that. It would only encourage him. "You'd like that, wouldn't you? To drag me down to your level?" She wasn't sure what his deal was, but every time he showed up he always seemed to cause trouble for her. "I wouldn't be surprised if you were the one who had started the rumors in the first place." It seemed like exactly the kind of thing he might do if he thought it was funny. And it would certainly explain why he seemed to be constantly around if he wanted to see how his prank turned out.

Somehow, seeing the girl before him bristle with indignation was energising, managed to cut through the exhaustion that was making his walk home so tiresome and unbearable. He could see it on her face as she processed and then formulated some come back or another. Silanos blinked, gave a derisive snort at how offended she was at the notion of her conduct being compared to his own.
“You’re very sure of yourself, for someone who’s seen how easily rumours can start” he retorted, ignoring the fact that whatever people were saying about him was likely true. And then almost indignantly “Besides...horrible is subjective. No-one was complaining at the time, I can tell you that” Silanos might have been a chancer, but he certainly wasn't interested in pursuing women who had no interest in him, he didn't force his attention on people.
Of course, she wouldn’t understand that because he could hardly imagine Imeeya of Drakos had let a man get close enough to her even to cause a breath of scandal. Far too prim and proper.
Perhaps that was her problem,he speculated idly, she’d be a lot less uptight if she actually did something worthy of gossip. He was however, entirely joking in volunteering. Having heard from Imeeya herself about how the Crown Prince was unimpressed with his conduct, he was not stupid as to think that engaging with the man’s cousin would be sensible. But it was very hard to resist winding her up a little more.
He laughed aloud at her response, ignoring the curious glances it elicited and instead keeping his attention on Lady Imeeya, an insolent edge to his words of reply. “Or maybe you would like it, and that’s what’s got you so hot and bothered. Are you blushing?” She wasn’t, but it didn’t mean he wouldn’t see if he could conjure one. “And don’t flatter yourself. You really do think everything revolves around you, don’t you?”
Sil couldn’t decide at this point if his amusement was straying into real annoyance. She had no idea of the nightmare he’d been living, and really, he would gladly trade it in to have people whispering behind his back for a couple of days. Only the fact that she had something to hold over his head kept his tongue on the right side of civil as he went on.
“Maybe you need to have a little chat with your pirate pal, tell him it’s rude to kiss and tell. Or even better, point your cousin in his direction instead of mine.”

This man was absolutely infuriating and yet he seemed to keep appearing at the most inopportune moments. Not to mention he kept seeming to find a way to get under her skin such that every word he said only seemed to make her more angry and flustered. “If I hadn’t witnessed your behavior with my own eyes, I might have a different opinion of any negative reputation. But my opinions are entirely based on my own observations, not hearsay. Whether or not Asia did not object is beside the point, you should know better than to endanger her reputation in such a way. That is if you ever actually cared for her.” Imeeya fixed him with an unconvinced stare.
Imeeya hadn’t been blushing but she found now that her cheeks flushed as Silanos pointed it out that she might be. She tried to stammer a denial that she might enjoy some sort of scandalous activity with him. That man always grated on her last nerve, how could he even begin to think that she might like something with him? Those blue eyes that always flickered with a hint of trouble behind them, like there was something dangerous? There was something about them that almost made her want to stop and stare at them. But that moment passed quickly as he mentioned the pirate again and her temper flared. If she never heard the word pirate again as long as she lived, it would be too soon.
Imeeya snapped back at the insufferable lordling. “If I had any idea what direction that might be, I would do it gladly if it would rid me of these rumors. However, as I know little more than the pirate’s name, having been of his acquaintance for all of ten minutes, I can no more send Vangelis after him than I could have had a torrid affair with the scoundrel.” Normally Imeeya would not have spoken about her cousin so casually to a passing acquaintance without use of formal titles, but in her anger, all formality had fallen to the side. “I would also like to point out that I informed no one of your kiss with Asia, and had never intended to share this information with anyone. And don’t flatter yourself to think that it was for your sake instead of the princess’s. If you wish to have someone call off the prince, perhaps you should have a word with her.” Not that Imeeya wished Silanos’s presence upon anyone else. It was bad enough that he had to bother her, he’d better not bother Asia, or he’d have her to answer to. Though she supposed that was hardly on Silanos’s radar at all since he’d also have at least Vangelis if not more of her brothers as well. Imeeya hardly mattered compared to the might of the Princes of Colchis.

The young Lord looked bored when Imeeya began prattling on about how she formed her opinions. He was pretty sure that she’d have believed the worst of him even if he’d been on his very best behaviour that day in the tavern. And he resisted bringing up how much more pleasant shed been whilst under the influence of poppy. Asia’s reputation remained unmarred - it was him that was dealing with the fallout of that. Or..would be. When he told Timaeus which he hadn't quite managed to bring himself to do yet. Not when he was still working off the consequences of his last poor decision.
At Imeeya’s question as to whether he cared for Asia or not, the Lord opened his mouth but then decided that even if he answered in the positive, it wouldn’t please the haughty Drakos girl, so he decided not to honour it with an answer.
Seeing her grow all flustered under his question: that was much more fun, and he grinned at her, a slow insolent smile that only grew with her embarrassment. And when she crossly retorted that she didn’t know where her supposed pirate lover was, he was quick to reply “ Aaah, so you’ve been jilted. That explains the ill-mood then. Don’t take it personally. That’s pirates for you. Notoriously unreliable”
However, Sil relented a little after that, because it did seem as if she had held her tongue about Asia, and about the poppy, and she really didn’t owe him anything. The smirk melted from his face and he glanced away a moment before responding. “Alright. So maybe I owe you thanks for that.”
He didn’t like the idea of owing her anything, but there wasn’t much he could do about it now. Chewing on the inside of his cheek and lifting his gaze towards the Drakos Manor, Silanos pondered that little fact. Maybe baiting her was not worth the possible repercussions.
“Given the fact Princess Asia decided to open her mouth about it anyway, I don’t think she’s likely to change her story now.” he said, rubbing at the back of his neck. He didn’t really want to think about that whole mess anymore anyway. As long as he stayed out of Vangelis’ way then maybe it would just die a quiet death.
“Don’t let me keep you out and get yourself in trouble again anyway, Lady Imeeya. Don’t want those harsh restrictions getting any harsher do we?”
He gave a very elaborate bow and immediately regretted it because all of his muscles protested at once. Tomorrow was going to be fucking hideous. The Valaoritis Lord stepped aside to let Imeeya move past him, and then continued his miserable trudge toward home.
