One would think more gold would be a good thing, right? The Gods knew he needed more gold now, for many things needed to be fixed, and many problems in his life as of now could be solved with gold. Narmer had always thought that as long as he could get his hands on some money, everything would be fine.
Except now more gold did appear, and for the first time he didn't want it. With much effort and sleepless nights from him and Zoser, Narmer had managed to, with difficulty, narrowly escape the tax auditors when they had been sent by the pharoah, somehow managing to explain his way around where the money had come from. When they had left, Narmer had finally gotten his one full night's sleep in awhile, and could not have been happier at it. Having thought that was the last of his problems, the many had went on with dealing with the day to day affairs of his Hei and province, even sending a few missives to perhaps see if his marriage could proceed.
Until last night.
He had only noticed in the morning, the sack of gold sitting at the foot of his bed, but no matter who he had asked, no one had any clue of how it had gotten there. It didn't help that Narmer now only employed the bare necessities of staff as a way to cut cost for their Hei, which meant there were even lesser eyes then usual in terms of security for the household. And unlike before, he had not even spent a single coin. Under advise from his trusted friend, Narmer had not told anyone in his family about it.
Instead, he wanted to find out the source of it. He needed to, because he could not afford it if the pharoah decided he was responsible for the missing part of the royal treasury.
So when the night came, Narmer installed himself at the only entrance of the household, ensuring the rest of it was sealed. Having stayed up late over the past few days getting ready to depart and join the troops along the Northern Nile, as well as expressly giving instructions to Na'meah so he doesn't come back to completely botched ledger books again, the dark circles were making a comeback under his eyes. But evading sleep was not a problem for the man - sleep was never his friend in the night. Rather then sleep, instead Narmer wanted to see if he could finally catch who it was that deposited gold in his room.
Sitting still as a statue with his eyes trained upon the only entrance and exit of the house, Narmers sat in the dark with nary a candle lit, his eyes alert for any movement that was made.

She had been finding it hard to sleep. There was something about being in your bed but your mind being entirely too much on other things. Safiya was struggling to find some way of settling it and when tossing and turning had eventually failed she had finally thrown her legs over the side and managed to get herself back onto her feet as she threw back her coverings to put her head into her hands and sighed a little bit.
The very last thing that she wanted to end up dealing with was spending her night not sleeping that would be the worst kind of outcome, so she needed to make sure that she figured something out. Safiya took a moment to try and at least clear her head so some kind of idea could end up slipping in and enable her to feel a whole lot better as a result. But nothing was happening, so in the end, she decided to go for a little bit of a walk. Safiya wasn't prone to insomnia but recent events had given her a lot to be newly concerned about and worried over, the war, the talk with the priestess even the increasingly imminent arrival of the Queen's baby.
Not to mention that there were rumours about her own family as well. The business of money seemed to have been cleared up, so there was that.
"...now to sleep" it would be a wonderful achievement to make and from the looks of things she hadn't ended up waking up her sister or anyone else. So, she was now pacing down the hallway rather forlorn-looking and feeling as she reached up to tug some of her hair forward and started to play with the strands absently. Perhaps she should see about going back to wake up Sameera, at least then she wouldn't be on her own and then she wouldn't feel like she was just being silly and scattered in her manner and thinking.

Kissan had spent the evening with Deshra. He really should not have stayed out so late but her company was intoxicating. Their visits had started to become its own routine of sorts and he found her conversation more enjoyable and though provoking that one might guess from a whore.
A whore. He shied away from such a crass title for her. He was aware of what she was, what she did and yet she seemed so much more than that. She had dreams and thoughts and hopes. She seemed rather forward thinking for a woman of the night and Kissan was fascinated by her mannerisms and flowing voice.
His visits with her had begun to cost him dearly but truly he hardly cared. He had scarcely been happier than when he was sitting with her, looking over the desert or riding out under the stars, her warm arms wrapped around his torso as he guided the horse out to various lookouts.
Always she seemed to wonder if he'd want more of her, always he'd gently say no. Her company, and truly that was what he wished for. Someday perhaps more but as of yet, merely her company was what he sought. She took his mind off present matters and he found relaxation regaling her with his day, boring as it might be.
So it was that Kissan was wandering absent mindedly into the Saraaya very late in the evening and had been surprised to find the door closest to the stables locked. Shrugging it off as some overzealous servant being cautious, Kissan worked his way around until he found a door that was open and waltzed into the darkness inside the house with little concern.

At some point, his eyes had become to ache from being trained at only one spot. But Narmer couldn't just up and let it go. He was getting sick of 'I don't know' being his only answer to Zoser, and the man was only trying to help. So at the very least, he could try and see who it was giving him the gold? It seemed so counterintuitive. His Hei needed the money, and that had been Narmer's first instinct when he had found the sack of gold - spend it to what his Hei needed. He had never thought of the repercussions, of what could've happened if someone who was likely the original owner of the gold came looking for it.
If it really was from the treasury of the pharoah, he doubted he would even have a Hei left to protect. And while that would be a weight off his shoulders, he wouldn't dare to face his father and brother after Osiris had claimed him to his realm.
So with a heavy paperweight in his hand, he waited in the darkened, unlit waiting room of his saraayaa, his ears and eyes perked for any sign of movement. He was convinced his nieces and nephew was asleep already, and he knew his sister-in-law was as he had bidded her goodnight after their conversation before taking up his post here in the seat he occupied.
When footsteps started in the hallway from the inner household where the family chambers were, he looked up, before frowning. Neither of his nieces or nephew should be awake, so Narmer was waiting to see who it was that would enter the living room - when a footstep entering the house startled him.
Instinctively, the man flung the heavy paperweight in the direction of the entrance, hearing it hit a wall, vase or something with a heavy crash, before he quickly lit a candle. "Who goes?!" was his frantic call as he fiddled with the match, lighting a candle and whirling in eager curiosity - only for his face to fall flat when he saw who it was. The disappointment was only for a sparse few seconds however, before he frowned again. "What are you doing coming home now, Kissan? Shouldn't you have been abed hours ago?" the man asked curiously, before turning to the hallway to see which niece it had been. "Sameera? Safiya?" he asked to clarify, still not great at telling them apart. "Is anything the matter?"

Well, there went the plan to not catch the attention of anyone else in the house, why where they all here and awake?
Safiya was starting to think that she had ended up being tricked but that was clearly not the case, just bad timing the curse of serendipity working against her once more. It really wasn't fair at times, though it seemed that her brother was also having some bad luck, perhaps that could be played to her advantage? If she had been slightly more awake and a little more certain of her own skills about being able to have that happen, it would have meant that she could have probably have come up with something immediately.
Instead, she looked far more like some gazelle held entranced by a hunter and their bow. It was hard not to add that vaguely sheepish smile as well.
And of course, she hadn't really done anything wrong. It just felt like she should be feeling guilty and that was the more amusing aspect in all of this. That she had been caught with her hand in the proverbial cookie jar but as her mind managed to clear a little bit she looked from brother to uncle and then back to uncle "Are we being robbed or something? Why are you all here?" she was confused both by her uncle's defensive manner and the fact that Kissan was here at all. What was going on?
For a moment, she felt a little bit excited at the end of an actual robbery! Then she remembered that Sameera wasn't here and it was the sort of thing that had her worrying a bit. Was her twin alright?
She couldn't hear any sounds of others and it was making her head hurt a little bit to try and even think about piecing the whole thing together and making any sort of sense about the whole situation. Hence, her rather direct question to her uncle, not something that she would normally do but then Safiya was tired and more than a little confused.

Awakening to find that her sister was gone and being quite confused as to the reason why, Sameera wandered the saraaya. She didn't hear much of a sound until she came upon the thought that perhaps they were all conferring together. Or perhaps they were all dead, the darker thought ran through Sameera's mind.
It would make an excellent story but a rather tragic true life experience, especially for Sameera's close relationship with her sister. Hearing voices, her heart immediately began to feel better. Her mind had gotten away from her and she was picturing life as an orphan. Well, now she could feel more safe.
She peered around, spotting her uncle and siblings. They were safe too, thank the gods. Sameera was beginning to wonder as she listened in on the conversation. She couldn't help but chuckle a little when her uncle asked which twin Safiya was. Such things were always obvious to her, but then again, she had only ever truly seen Safiya.
Stepping out, she added to the question, "Is it just coincidence?" It seemed rather unlikely. Sameera tended to be awake when her sister was, though, so maybe it was just simple coincidence. It seemed like the simplest explanation, though Sameera could tell a good deal better story if asked.
Tiredly, she thought to herself a rather interesting story to how they came to be there. Her uncle seemed rather on edge, so perhaps he had been planning some surprise for the rest of the family. And Kissan...maybe he had been sneaking out to go spend time with his friends, or perhaps to buy presents for them, rather than enjoy a night of sleep.
As for Safiya, Sameera thought, rubbing her eyes, she probably was being compelled by a bout of insomnia and wandered out, which led them to where they were now. Sameera nearly chuckled but held herself together. She hated when the story would catch up to where she was at that moment, and she would have to wait to see what happened next.

Suddenly, it was like a family discussion happening, except the hour was inappropriate, and Narmer was really not in the right frame of mind for this right now. He was all geared and ready to catch someone and question them. The more gold he was given, even if his family was in dire straits and could use the extra gold, was a source of money he could not explain, and Narmer really didn't want to deal with the stress of thinking the pharoah could accuse him of theft at any given moment and he'd have no argument or leg to stand on to prove that he hadn't.
So all in all, Narmer was currently in a very high strung mood, and it was like a taunt string ready to snap even as he faced his nephew and nieces.
"Even if we were being robbed, you shouldn't be out here Safiya." he quickly snapped, once he's managed to identify which twin it was once his eyes adjusted to the light. Briefly, the man turned to Kissan, his frown clearly demanding an explanation from his nephew on why Kissan was returning to the saraaya at an hour far too late to be decent, but before he could demand for either of them to explain their presence here when they were both supposed to be abed, another voice joined the fray, one that matched Safiya's almost exactly.
Turning to see Sameera walk in, Narmer swallowed a groan, using his hands to massage his temples briefly. Would Narutt be able to handle all of this so much easier? It seemd almost daily now, that Narmer wondered if his brother would be able to do far better then how he did. But no matter how he wondered, it wouldn't bring his brother back, now would it?
"I sincerely hope it is. What are all of you doing out of your beds at this time?" he asked, his voice holding an edge of hardness to it as he demanded an explanation from his young charges, obviously displeased at their presence.

Kissan had been startled by Narmer's presence and accusations but even more so but the subsequent appearance of both of his twin sisters. Working at the palace it was becoming rarer and rarer that they were both home. So now it seemed all three siblings were in one place and a seemingly paranoid uncle to boot.
"Well I" he stammered searching for an answer but Narmer seemed more concerned with asking the girls what THEY especially were doing up so late. Kissan wavered between trying to get on his uncle's good side and chiding them as well or attempting to slip off to bed while he was distracted.
Sadly his deliberation soon made him the target of Narmer's attentions once more. "I was just... checking on the horses" Kissan lied. "I thought I heard them and with everything these days, figured I'd check on them...you know, make sure everything was okay." Kissan was a terrible liar and he knew it. He tried to act calm and confused at Narmer but he really didn't want to share with his uncle that he'd been slipping out to spend time with a woman of the night and not even to have sex.
"They're fine by the way" Kissan noted with a reassuring smile. He neglected to note why he was still in the clothes he'd been wearing earlier that day and not the sleep clothes he would have been in if he'd been awoken by sounds from the stable.

Safiya wasn't sure what was going on.
It was late and her head was already confused from the lack of sleep, so she was probably missing some of the more obvious clues about what these strange circumstances were all about "It could be that Sameera. I couldn't sleep, Kissan wanted to check on the horses in the middle of the night, you woke up and uncle... " she paused for a long drawn out pause.
"hmmmm, yes, uncle. Why are you up and startling your poor niece just wanted to take a walk and try and get a good night's sleep" Safiya was just a little bit cranky but then that wasn't anything new really, she really didn't do well when it came to a lack of sleep or even late nights. Safiya was ironically a real morning person and able to bound around quite sickeningly cheerfully but right here and now she was just cranky.
Even if she was trying really hard not to be anything like that "Is everything alright then, now we're not being robbed and the horses are just fine" she added, looking at her brother and shaking her head, that was a terribly excuse.

Sameera's own reason followed that of her sister, though she wasn't sure what that was, she had simply awoken and realized the sound of her sister's sleeping breaths was no longer sounding in her ears. She believed it was the silence more than anything else, as it would just sound wrong in her ears for reasons she didn't quite understand. Somewhat jokingly, she elbowed her sister and muttered, "Yeah, Safiya, you wouldn't want the robbers to catch you in your sleeping clothes." She giggled just a little, though obviously being robbed was a lot more serious.
Especially for the Haikaddads. Sameera wasn't fully aware of their problems, especially since, according to one of many books she'd read, women just didn't have the head for that kind of thing, but she still hoped she could have a good enough understanding to help when it was necessary.
She raised an eyebrow and Kissan's words, and elbowed her sister again. It was no secret that their brother was a horrible liar, and she wondered just where Kissan had been, something she was more likely to press him on when their uncle wasn't there. There was a stronger bond, Sameera thought, between the Haikaddad children and each other than they shared with their uncle.
"Coincidence and fate work in strange ways," Sameera said somewhat ambivalently. She didn't doubt that, but she also couldn't help but wonder if there was something special about this night or if it had simply been luck or even a chain of events. "I left my bed to find Safiya." Though she hadn't been awoken by Safiya's initial leave, she found it easier to make up stories in her head about horrible things happening to her sister when she wasn't sleeping safely, and she had been a little worried. Safiya was always a little braver than Sameera was.
She kept silent beyond then, a fact that her family would no doubt be used to, taking things in as they came and filing them away for later, just in case.

Honestly, Narmer had visions of himself being the 'fun' uncle as his nieces and nephews were born. He was the young one, and Narutt was the one who had the responsibility of ensuring they grew up to be upstanding members of the society. Narmer had wanted to be the one who would introduce Kissan to the other walks of life, to whisper cheeky suggestions of practical jokes for the twins to play on their parents.
What irony, that he now had to ensure their upbringing would be as Narutt wanted it to be?
Raising his brows as his gaze slid back to his nephew, the man furrowed his brows as if trying to figure out the young man's reason. "We have two at the moment. Both with the stablemaster when he returns for the night. Were you checking on our empty stables?" he asked in return, raising one brow as if curious on what the answer would be. In truth, they couldn't afford to pay the stablemaster for in house services, and since the man was willing to take a lower pay as long as he'd be able to go home for the nights, Narmer was happy to cut him the deal. He generously agreed to bring the horses with him too, considering his own family was not far.
But Kissan didn't know the nuances of his deals.
"Plus, you haven't changed. And you should have been abed along while ago... did you plan to head out anyhow?" he further questioned.
Turning to his nieces, Narmer resisted the urge to roll his eyes. The twins were wont to get into situations like these, and while in general Narmer found them amusing, they were less so when he was so wound up on a... he can't even call them thieves cause they came to give him gold! Reverse thieves? Rolling his eyes when Sameera tried to become philosophical on him instead, Narmer ran his hands through his hair in irritation. They could go around all night about who had been awoken by who to go and check by who, so in the end, Narmer just waved his hands at them all in quiet weariness.
"Whatever it may be, it is far past time for all of you to be abed, so just.... keep quiet and stay in your rooms even if you do hear anything." he paused, as if considering he should tell them what was occuring, before shaking his head and deciding against it. "All is fine, nothing for you to worry off, alright?"

Kissan eyed his sisters as his excuse seemed to do little to convince them and his heart sank as Narmer quickly dispelled his explanation. Curse his uncle and his money saving deals. He should have know the stables were empty. Now his excuse wasn't just unlikely, it was a clear lie.
It seemed his hide was only saved by his more philosophical sister and he made note to get her something nice the very next chance he got.
As Narmer dismissed them all back to their rooms, Kissan breathed a visible sigh of relief and nodded respectfully. "Yes Uncle" before scampering off back towards his room.
He wondered as he slipped out of his day clothes and into something more appropriate for bed, just why his uncle was up so late. And wondered further about the worried lines on his face. He knew the Haikaddad was in trouble financially, that had been true for some time, but there seemed to be something new worrying his uncle now.
With war drawing ever closer, Kissan wondered just what it would bring and where they would all find themselves in a few months time. He lay back into his bed of reeds and dreamed of the glories that he'd one day see.
