Essa couldn’t shake the memory of the day before. When she’d arrived to court, she’d walk straight into a stand off between the houses of Kotas and Thanasi. Tensions were so high, it had taken her half the day to recover. Even then it still seemed to haunt her. Things seemed more complicated than ever between the rivals.
This whole situation between Vangelis and Thea was like holding a torch surrounded by powder kegs. Selene had been adored, especially by their family. They had seemed so happily content with the match too. No one had seen this upheaval coming. Thea had never seemed particularly malicious, but now Essa felt like she knew nothing of either her cousin or the woman who bore his child. To think that a Thanasi heir might sit upon the throne... it was unsettling.
Of course, Evras had been born Thanasi as well, but Essa always considered her Kotas through and through. She had practically been raised alongside Dion after all. Still, she knew that Evras always struggled when those age old tensions ripened again. How could she not? She was caught in the middle between her family of birth and her love and newfound family.
Essa felt for the woman. She adored Evras. All her time spent with Dion from childhood to now meant that she had spent a great deal of time with the Princess. Truth be told, she felt far more herself in the time she spent with Zanon and his family than she did in her own half the time. She never tolerated conflict well while her mother and sister seemed to thrive on it.
After all the tension of yesterday, she wanted to make a point of checking on the princess. Now that she was on bedrest, she could only imagine the boredom and frustration she must be feeling. It seemed a breeding ground for a dark mood with nothing better to do than fret.
Upon arriving at her favorite cousin’s chambers, she knocked lightly before peaking in. She opened the door wider with a smile. “Evras, hello. I hope you don’t mind the intrusion.” She approached before sitting gingerly beside the bed. “I brought reading material to help pass the time for you,” she added, lifting the book she held.
Hesitating slightly, her eyes turned downcast.
“I wanted to check on you, after yesterday. Things seemed...” She faltered, her voice drifting off mid-sentence. No word seemed quite strong enough. “Upsetting.” It was an adequate enough choice. Essa reached out to gently cover the older woman’s hand with her own. “I was worried about how it might be weighing on you. I imagine it cannot be easy to be in your position at such a time. I'd hate for you to feel you must suffer alone in silence.”

While Evras had thought attending the event the night before hadn't been as strenous as she thought it would, the fact that she woke up feeling extra weary that morning proved her otherwise, and as much as she'd like to join her son for breakfast for once, Evras eventually gave in and instructed the slaves to bring her morning meal up, and was left alone with it.
It was no surprise that Zanon had left early for work, considering now his father and all his brother's had left, her husband practically helmed running the kingdom, and Evras foresaw many morning's spent by herself until at least one of them return to share the load. It wasn't as if she was minding it, as she had spent many years by herself, but perhaps it was the babe within her, but suddenly Evras craved her husband's touch, and it was a deuced pain to crave it with no return.
So she simply downed it with brewed chamomile, something the physician had offered her so as to aid with the morning nausea that was being annoyingly constant throughout this pregnancy, before slowly nibbling on dry bread and cheese. The kitchen of the royal household could of course, provide her with heartier fare, but anything more and Evras would be making a beeline for the chamber pot, so the servants had been instructed well on that front.
Even so, it took a long while before she could actually finish her food. But in all honesty, Evras was in no hurry. What else could she do? She was practically in bed all day, and in all honesty with nothing but her thoughts to accompany her, it simply got worst. Ever since hearing the news on Thea, and then having Nethis pointedly ask for a word with her, Evras had only went to bed with a worried heart, and woke up to it still being there. How long could she avoid a conversation with Nethis anyhow? None of their exchanges had ever come up with something good for her of late, but neither could she cower behind the Queen and her husband for the rest of eternity.
With the heavy thoughts in her head, she hadn't even heard the door scraping open until a voice made Evras look up in surprise, only to smile when she saw who it was. "Essa." she greeted, waiting till the young girl came closer before smiling when she saw the book. "Thank you very much, that would help greatly when I've got so much to do." she replied, the last part tinged with sarcasm as she waved her hand around the room. It was fine the first few days, but there was only so much crocheting and sewing she could do before one got sore fingers. The new babe already had a dozen new outfits at the rate she was going the last week.
Her smile faltered when Essa referred to yesterday and the tension-filled situation in the court session. She didn't wish to drag Essa in it.She had almost seen the young girl grow up, her age difference not so different from Dion that she's come to think of Essa quite like a young sister or niece, much like how she treated Athanasia. While she did not enjoy how Imeeya tended to lean towards tense altercations, Essa was a breathe of fresh air Evras enjoyed spending time with.
But she was also young, and Evras did not wish to burden her. As such, the dark-haired princess merely shook her head, shifting to make way so Essa could find a spot to sit more firmly on her bed. "It is nothing for you to worry of. Merely... normal family conversations." she trailed off with a wry smile. Essa would know what she meant by 'normal' - it wasn't abnormal for there to be sparks flying between her birth family and her husband's one. The one difference now, was that Evras did not wish to be caught in between - she wanted out of it, entirely. Not for her own sake, but for the sake of her children, who did not deserve to be brought up in such a situation or enviroment. "I'm sorry you had to be caught in between it though."

Not for her own sake, but for the sake of her children, who did not deserve to be brought up in such a situation or enviroment. "I'm sorry you had to be caught in between it though."
Essa giggled gently at the sarcasm in the bedridden woman’s voice. “I know you have so much on your plate already, but I just couldn’t stand the thought that you might be left with a moment of boredom,” she teased. Things always felt so simple with Evras. She could just relax and enjoy herself in her company, rather than feel as though every moment was a test that she was constantly failing in her mother’s eyes.
As a young child she had often spent time with Prince Dion - in the process, she had often fantasized that she was Zanon and Evras’s eldest child rather than a mere cousin. It wasn’t that she wanted to trade away her mother or sister - she loved them more than anything. But with her cousin’s family... she felt like she belonged in a way she never would with her own family. It was a terrible secret she could never voice aloud. Yet it was always there in the back of her mind. They were more alike than different and that was a blessing that Essa would never not be grateful for.
Yet she couldn’t help but visibly deflate as Evras casually maneuvered around the question. “Yes, of course,” she murmured, nodding slightly. It was no secret the tensions between their families. Even in the best of times.
“It is nothing to me if I was able to shield you even slightly,” she insisted, leaning forward to earnestly grasp the woman’s hands in her own. “The conversations might be typical, but the circumstances are anything but,” she insisted. “Not even including the mess that Vangelis left behind, I know how long you’ve wanted this little one.” She had grown up watching Evras after all. “I know how much you love your family and how much you’ve wished it larger. I’d have to be blind to be ignorant of that,” she said with a small chuckle.
Even those closest to her were often surprised by how observant the young noble truly was. After all, she was seldom included in discussions of any import. She had been an adult for years now, yet most people still didn’t treat her any differently. Even those who treated her most kindly still sought to protect her. Even if that was the last thing she wanted. Knowing it was well intended did little to soothe her frustration at such constant treatment. She offered what she hoped was a reassuring smile and gently squeezed her hands as she continued to speak, hoping she could convince Evras to open up to her.
“I’m not a child anymore, Evras. You’ve done so much for me over the years, let me be here for you now when you are in need. I swear it will be no burden. In fact, it would bring me great joy than to be your confidant as you have so often been mine. Nothing would honor me more deeply than your trust.”

While Evras had had alot on her plate, now it seemed the exact opposite, for laying on the bed day in day out with nothing better to do then her needlework or maybe read a scroll or two was proving to be uneventful. Sure, she could do another needlework, make another blanket for the coming baby, but how many blankets did a baby need? She tried to convince the Queen that she could at least go through the weekly shopping lists with the housekeeper, but even that has been vetoed by the matriarch, leaving Evras quite bored, really.
Essa's visit was a breathe of fresh air, and Evras genuinely enjoyed seeing the young Drakos in the household. She was a wonderful sister-figure to Dion as he grew up as a single child, and the girl herself had a sweet demeanour Evras found herself wishing she could preserve amidst the viper-like atmosphere which was growing only larger in the last few months in Midas. Essa was young yet, even if she was blossoming into a beautiful lady. But be that as it may, she did not think the machinations of her sister was a suitable topic for the young Drakos. Or she at the very least wanted to keep Essa blissfully unaware of such matters.
But even as she tried, it would seem Essa wanted to grow up right in front of her very eyes. For a moment, Evras had to remind herself that she was no longer the young girl who watched over an infant Dion, but was now a grown lady of sixteen, almost seventeen, and would soon have her own family, if the Gods permitted. Perhaps she was simply being too fussy?
She smiled in return to her earnest claim, and returned it with a grateful squeeze of the younger lady's hand. "I appreciate it." she murmured in return, reminding herself yet again that Essa, young in her years she may be, was an observant and intelligent young one, having obviously inherited her mother's intelligence. Lady Tythra was the only lady in the Colchian senate afterall. "I know you're not, but the situations and actions of both my family and some others are not... pleasant, for the eyes nor for the ears."
In truth, they hurt Evras, for she never truly thought her father and sister would go to that extent. Now, she wondered if her life would be beneath getting a Thanasi name on that throne. "I trust you, do not believe otherwise. It is other's I do not trust. Being in my confidence would only bring harm to you Essa." she murmured, her own concern evident in her tone as her eyes flickered over and she reached for the book the Drakos lady had left on her bedside, picking it up for a moment to look at it, before laying it aside and flashing Essa an encouraging, soft smile. "But perhaps, you could help me? Tell me what went on in the court session last night after I left. I am sorely missing the news, since the best news I get is how the weather is from my window." she teased, rolling her eyes at the only window she got in her bedchamber which was much akin to a prison for her now.

Essa could see that Evras was not ready to speak of such matters to her. For all that it disappointed her, she understood that it came from a place of love. After all, Essa herself was not so different, always so reluctant to burden others with her troubles. She nodded slowly, her head dipping low as Evras tried to soothe her. “I’ve seen and heard more unpleasantness than anyone realizes. I can handle it, really. You shouldn’t have to bear this alone, especially in your condition.” She bit her lower lip slightly, pondering if there was a way to convince Evras that she had not yet tried.
“I promise you, none will know you ever confided in me,” she quickly assured her. “I can help you, I just know it. Everyone thinks me dumb, and most barely even notice me if I’m not standing the side of a Kotas. I can be of use to you with no one being the wiser, I swear it. Especially now when you’re so restricted yourself.” She felt as though she had to push for this, as though it was somehow her chance to prove herself useful for once. That she was more than anyone believed her to be.
“I’m part of this family too,” she whispered softly. She might only be a cousin, but in her heart, they were so much dearer to her than that. Zanon’s family was like a home for her heart. She belonged with them in a way she never would with her immediate family. “I only want to help. You know how much you and your family mean to me. Dion, and this baby. I’d do anything for you all. Anything.”
She immediately tensed as Evras asked about the most recent court session, though she very much hoped that the pregnant woman had not noticed that reaction. She hated to keep things from her, but all she could think of was the horrible things those ladies had said about Evras and Dion. The last thing she wanted was to have to reveal that to her. While the rumors of witchcraft had been around forever, Essa knew they pained the Princess all the same. More than that, that the ladies of the court were whispering about Dion in such a cruel manner... there was no way that wouldn’t upset the expecting mother. Essa dare not imagine what the consequences of that may be for a lady in her delicate condition.
Instead, she tried to deflect altogether, keeping a careful smile on her face. “Oh, you know I always end up so on the fringes of those things that I seldom hear any of the interesting tidbits,” she said with a chuckle and a wave of her hand. She paused a moment, as though trying to remember what she had heard “Mostly people wanted to talk about Thea’s condition. Though I did hear that a certain lady has been sneaking off to the stables and performing rather scandalous acts. Can you imagine?”
Essa could only pray that would be enough to keep her from prying further. Otherwise, she would surely break.

For what it's worth, Evras could see how eager Essa was to help. But it was almost as if this was Evras's fate to be born into the family, have met Zanon, and then ended up in the situation she was now. Besides, Essa was far too young, at sixteen just a bare five years older then Dion. If Evras was going to keep Dion from being embroiled in the same family drama she was in, she'd do her best to keep Essa from it as well.
As such, the princess merely squeezed the young Drakos's hands in silent thanks for the fervant support provided by the younger female, but chose to focus on her next words.
While Essa did her best to deflect, Evras could see the care in which the smile was maintained, which meant the night had not gone in anyway better after she had left. She couldn't say she was surprised however. Thea's scandal with Vangelis only gave them fodder for gossip, and if they could come up with stories out of thin air for gossip, Evras could only imagine the damage the viper's could do when given actual proof of some story happening in between the royal families, one that ruined an unannounced engagement, and brought yet another marriage to the table.
She could only hope her husband protected Dion from their vicious words, and while Evras knew Zanon wouldn't allow any such hurtful words to fall upon their young son's ears, a mother was born to worry over her children. It was as if it was one of their many natural instincts, one Evras was beginning to wish she didn't have in such droves.
Widening her eyes in a surprised gasp, Evras's smile was conspitorial as she grinned at Essa. "I wonder who. Do you think you'd know the lady?" she murmured as if they were thick as thieves, gossiping themselves in the privacy of her room. Conveniently, the princess avoided conversation of her sister and the circumstances which surrounded Thea, the topic of conversation still a sore one with her. They had never found commonground, and while Evras now believed that at the very least Thea did not mean her harm, it did not mean she didn't feel hurt at all after being essentially omitted out of a huge part of her sister's life, when she had thought they were closer then anything.
Peering closer to Essa however, Evras paused for a moment, before asking again. "Was that all that happened, Essa sweetheart?" While she may not have the manipulative streak of her eldest sister, nor the quiet calm of Thea, Evras was discerning and perceptive, and could usually tell when she was being omitted of something, now even more so after the discovery of the eight-year long skulking about Thea had done behind her back.

For a moment, it seemed her plan was working as Evras leaned forward in a conspiratorial whisper, focused on the gossip she had shared. While Essa knew she’d never forget those ladies names nor faces after the incident, she pretended to try to remember, furrowing her brow slightly. After all, before that day, she had barely known them. So it wasn’t really a lie.
“I believe her name was Myrra. I couldn’t put a face to the name though. Though apparently the stableboy is quite familiar with it. Well, perhaps not her face” she mused in a dramatic whisper, barely able to keep a straight face long enough to speak before dissolving into giggles. It didn’t escape her notice that Evras had avoided mentioning Thea’s role in the gossip at all. Not that she could really blame her. The recent turn of events had been upsetting for all, and surely even more so for Evras herself. Even before the gossip-mongers decided to use it as evidence of the Thanasi wishes.
She didn’t dwell on these thoughts though, simply relieved her diversion seemed to be working.
Only to be proven wrong. She visibly winced as Evras asked her pointedly if that was all that had happened. That unfortunately was more than answer enough that she couldn’t hope to distract the pregnant woman any further. Still, perhaps she could find a way to leave Dion out of it. While the witchcraft talk bothered Evras, she was used to it. Talk of her child would upset her on an entirely different level. Essa feared how it might affect her in her current state. So she resolved to tell the truth - just as gently as she possibly could.
“Very well. You’re right, there is more. It’s just... unpleasant.” She sighed heavily, gaze turning downwards as she gathered her thoughts. After a moment she met Evras’s eyes once more. “As Zanon was escorting you... well, some ladies said some very ignorant remarks about the influence of Thanasi women over Kotas men. They were quickly silenced though, I assure you! No one was about to let such unwarranted remarks go unanswered.”
Essa carefully studied the other woman, looking for any sign of distress. “I promise you, it’s been dealt with. There is nothing at all to worry about.”

As a princess for the last decade or so, Evras's skills at discerning the unspoken word had gotten far better over the years. Afterall, it had turned into a necessary skill for when she was trying to decipher who was a friend and who was a foe among court. It wasn't that she never had to do that before, even as a Thanasi daughter, that had already been necessary since there were always rumors regarding her and her siblings. It simply became far more important when a Thanasi married a Kotas - that Thanasi being her.
Still, despite that, she also recognized Essa's lack of want in recounting to her what had happened that night at the dinner. Of course, she doubted the Drakos young girl had any ill will to her. She simply wanted to protect Evras's tender feelings, as many seemed to assume the dark-haired maiden was. She was softer then her siblings, with none of the hard words Nethis had, while seemingly lacking the independent air Thea posessed. Unlike both her sisters, Evras had inherited all of her mother's empathy, and only a little of her father's metallic tang for life, and somehow that translated to Evras being seen as the weakest link in the trio of Thanasi sister's.
But for the most part, it was largely Evras's unwilligness to cause pain to other's on purpose be it physically, or through the cut of words. She saw no point in stooping down to the level of other's, and as Essa finally spilled what had been said, Evras inwardly blanched, but outwardly gave a nonchalant smile to Essa, while patting the top of the young maiden's hand. "I'm not worried, sweetheart." she murmured, a wry smile upon her lips. Even if she did feel distressed, she was very much used to such comments by now. "In fact, if such things hadn't been said, I would be far more worried the ladies had been cursed by the Gods."
In truth, while the words of choice had not been pleasant, Evras had simply chosen not to be bothered by such matters, if only for the sake of the child she now carried. The last the physician had said, was that the child was easily affected by her emotions, which would explain the abdominal pains she felt during the time before the men left for war and right after the argument she had with Zanon when her husband still suspected her and her family having to do with Vangelis's poisoning.
After that scare, Evras would far rather choose not to be affected then to allow it to harm her unborn child. Did she feel hurt? Yes. But she chose not to wallow, and instead picked up the book and flashed Essa a smile as she showed the girl the book. "Now, the physician said I needed to relax. And I can think of nothing more relaxing then listening to you read to me. I think the babe would like that too," she murmured, pulling Essa's hand to let her palm rest upon the slight swell of her stomach. "Do you think you could entertain her?" Evras murmured. They couldn't know the gender yet, of course, but Evras was convinced the gentle babe within her was a girl. The pregnancy, while not as easy as Dion's had been, was far more gentler. Dion had been highly active at four months, yet the one she carried now was far softer in his or her kicks.

The relief that Essa felt as the Princess reassured her was evident. While she was far more adept at hiding her emotions in one on one interactions such as this, with Evras she felt no need to do such things typically. She managed a small laugh at her teasing words. The more she thought about it, the more she realized that her cousin’s wife had surely heard such remarks many a time before. “I guess you’re used to that sort of ignorance, aren’t you?” she whispered softly, sorrow in her eyes.
She leaned forward slightly. “I wish people could see you as you are. You’re so kind and warm to us always. You’re the furthest thing from cold. And anyone who cares to look can see how much you love Zanon and Dion. How anyone can say you’re a witch who has enchanted them to do as your father wishes is beyond ridiculous. Even if you were born Thanasi, you’ve been Kotas for nearly my whole life. How can they still doubt you?”
The young girl didn’t understand it and it was one of the many reasons she hated Court. Even if Evras was accustomed to such cruelty, it upset Essa every time she witnessed such things.
Essa accepted the book with a smile. “Oh yes, of course. I’d love nothing more,” she agreed. Her eyes brightened as Evras moved her hand to rest of the swell of her stomach. “Oh, I hope it is a little girl,” she murmured. “I love Dion to pieces, but I would love a little princess to dote on.” Her eyes grew a little misty as she remembered parts of her own childhood. Her cousin and uncle were the closest she had to a father. Zanon in particular had always been kind to her. He understood her sensitive nature in a way none of the others seemed to, and he was never above playing with her, even if it meant looking like a fool. “Zanon would adore her beyond belief. She’d be the luckiest little girl to have you two as parents.”
She used her free hand to wipe at her eyes slightly, hoping that Evras wouldn’t notice the gesture. It was a silly thing to get emotional over, but the absence of her father - the one she supposedly took after - had always bothered her. Now wasn’t the time or place to worry about such things though. Suddenly her eyes went wide as she looked up at the pregnant woman, feeling something move beneath her hand. She had been too young to remember Evras’s first pregnancy, though she had likely held a hand to her belly then too. Still, she couldn’t help but ask, “Did she just... was that her?”

Despite the severity of which Essa thought the situation to be, in honesty Evras was very used to the treatment she received from court. Was it sad that she was used to such things? Maybe, kind of. But Evras had decided not too long ago, that if she wanted to continuously be affected by such words from inconsequential people, she would spend most of her life feeling affected by them. Evras had decided that they were not worth her time, when she could easily spend that time with her own children and family, and now it slid off like water off a duck's back.
"Hey, let people believe what they want. As long as they don't do anything, I'm happy to let them continue with what makes them happy." she mused with a grin that was a mix of cheeky and nonchalant, settling back against the bedding that had been propped up behind her again. "Those in court will never change, Essa. But we can change the way we react to them." Ulla had told her that a lady must never stoop down to hurting others to get what they want, and Evras had led by that for her whole life.
Laughing at Essa's hope, Evras couldn't deny that she too, hoped for the same thing. She loved Dion, she really did. But the brief period she had watching the visiting Taengean Queen and her daughter had made Evras eager to have a little girl of her own, not to mention she had watched Zanon with the little girl. He definitely would dote on any daughter she had, and Evras just really wanted to see him enjoy a life without the stress of all his offspring being heir to the thrones. An infant girl would provide him the ease of enjoying a child without the stress of their future.
Essa was a girl who could grow up quite unlike her sister and mother. While she knew Tythra and Imeeya to be strong, independent figures, Essa's nature had been far softer. Yet while many saw it as weak, Evras knew that sensitivity could also be a strength, for it meant many more would feel for her in her times of distress.
Allowing Essa to feel the child she now carried, she had to hide a smile when Essa suddenly widened her eyes. She had felt it, the minute movement of the child in her belly. It would be nothing noticeable by the naked eye yet, for the last pregnancy she had, Dion's feet only started becoming really obvious after the sixth or seventh month of her pregnancy. But what she could feel was the shifting and slight movement of the baby in her, as the child grew. Nodding to Essa, she held the young girl's hands against her belly, and moved it to track the slight movements until it died down.
"It's small yet. Try again when she grows up, and you'll likely feel some kicks of protests." That had been Dion when Evras had carried him anyhow, and he was been a kicker nearer to his birth date, so Evras had been half glad to have her son out of her by the time he was born. Watching the surprised, but also emotional face Essa wore, Evras couldn't help but ask, "Do you... wish for children of your own, in the future, Essa?"

The Princess’s words made Essa feel sad. That she had to accept such terrible things when she deserved none of them. “What kind of person is happy at such cruelty?” she whispered, even though she knew the answer. It was what she hated most about court after all. Unlike Evras, her own soft heart was bare, exposed to every barb sent her way. She had no armor, no husband, no sanctuary to hide behind.
She sighed, nodding in concession at the observation that court would never change. She knew that, even if she wished still that it might someday. If only she could be so strong as Evras. She couldn’t even imagine how the woman had endured over a decade of this gossip, let around found the strength to truly not care about it at all. It only made her admire the Princess all the more. “I have plenty of room to improve upon that,” she answered with a sigh. She had tried so hard at court, yet only succeeded in disappointing everyone once more. Even her aunt, the Queen had been upset with her. That still stung more than she cared to admit.
It was silly real, to feel such envy for a babe not yet born. Yet Essa thought more often than she dared admit what her life might have been like had she been born to Zanon and Evras, rather than her own mother who embodied the Colchian chill better than anyone. Parents who would have encouraged her gentleness, praised her kindness, consoled her sensitivity rather than rejecting all the softness that made her. Would she be happy? Would she fear her future so much?
Girl or boy, she knew this babe was lucky to have such parents. Parents who would adore them, encourage them, cherish them. It was an incredible gift.
Her eyes lit up as the Princess moved her hands over her stomach, tracking the slight motions of the babe, subtle though they might be. “It’s incredible,” she whispered as her hand fell away. She had held her breath all the while, as though afraid to miss the slightest shift from the sound. “Oh, I can’t wait to meet her!” she exclaimed softly with a grin. “Or him.”
The woman’s question surprised her, but she softened immediately. “Oh, I hope so,” she said with a smile. It was a woman and wife’s duty to provide heirs of course, but Essa loved the idea of a family. After all, it would be a chance for her warmth to do some good. And just maybe, she might be fortunate enough to have not just a husband, but a child who adored her as well. It would never matter to her who or what her child wanted. She’d give them the acceptance and love that she had always longed for herself, without any hesitation.
“I can only pray to be so lucky,” she continued with a shy smile. “To bring a life into the world... to be surrounded by such love... what more could I ask for?”

Essa's young age showed when she got easily affected by the actions of those in court, things which Evras had long since been numbed by. But they were things and habits that came with time, and Evras knew that in time, Essa would get it. The ways and methods of court came to one with time, but the painful part was usually the waiting, and while Evras wished she could save Essa the pain of waiting, it was as if everyone had to go through this same passage of time.
Smiling when the girl seemingly lit up at the feel of the babe moving, Evras couldn't lie that she too felt a sense of relief, as she did everytime the babe moved. After losing unborn children that could've been her children, Evras would take anything that reassured her the young child still grew and was healthy within her, especially after the warning her physician had given her. It was for that only reason that despite how antsy Evras grew being bedbound, she wouldn't leave as long as it would ensure she gave birth to a healthy baby in a few months.
"Her, I hope." she replied with a cheeky grin. Evras always said that all she wanted was a healthy baby, but she couldn't help but hope. Dion was a wonderful son and she had loved being hsi mother and watching Zanon raise his son, but she did often wonder how Zanon would be like with a daughter. She had no doubt, with how horribly overprotective her husband already was, that he was unlikely to let a daughter out of his sight.
Call it curiosity.
A small laugh escaped her lips when she heard Essa's breathy admission on having a child. But who wouldn't? It was pretty much all any girl was raised to do in this day and age, and while Evras knew she'd hope for the same for her daughter should she be so blessed by the Gods to have one, but she also wished for many more things for her daughter to have. To have the support of her family, to have dreams and hopes and interests that would be for her,and not just to find a husband. That is not to say she thought a husband useless, but didn't every parent wanted everything they couldn't have for their child?
"I have no doubt you'd achieve all of that, Essa. Any guy would be lucky to have you." she murmured, before another cheeky glint entered her eye. The princess nudged the young Drakos girl before asking, "Any lucky young man who would want to join you on that journey?"

It seemed like a miracle to feel the babe moving under her touch. Her grin grew all the wider at the confession that her cousin hoped it would be a girl as well. She knew Zanon and Evras would love their child no matter its gender, but she found herself hoping for a girl as well. “She would be the luckiest little girl,” she whispered softly. After all, she had more than enough fond memories of Zanon playing with her to know how he would be with a daughter. And Essa couldn’t help but selfishly hope that she might be a meaningful part of the little princess’s life as she grew up. She’d always wanted a little sibling after all. Dion was the closest she had, and she loved him fiercely. She would be just the same with his little brother or sister too.
Essa gave a tiny eye roll at the standard line that any man would be lucky to have her. It was what was said by all doting family members, yet it always felt hollow, no matter how well intentioned.
She looked up in surprise at the nudge and teasing question. “Oh! No, not at all. I don’t seem to have caught anyone’s eye,” she answered dejectedly. Well, at least not in a romantic way. Mihail enjoyed teasing her, baiting her with his barbs. But that was the closest she had come to receiving any meaningful attention at court. And she was hardly about to mention that to his own sister. “It feels like everyone is either too old to view me as anything but a child or too young to care about such things,” she complained with a sigh. Hopefully that would change someday.
They continued that way for some time, talking of future hopes and reading tales. It was easy and comfortable, as things always were with Evras. For perhaps the thousandth time, Essa wished she had been born to this family, where she so clearly fit much better than within her own. Where she was understood. Where she was enough simply as she was. Instead of constantly being urged to fight her every instinct. Shoved into a mold she could never truly fit in.
She loved her family, more than anything. But sometimes, she just wanted to be accepted as she was. To feel like she actually belonged. Like she resembled them in some fashion. Was that truly asking so much? Instead, she forced such thoughts aside, focusing on this rare moment of peace for as long as she could make her visit last.
