The day was non-eventful and terribly dull. Kesi spent most of it running errands. She went to the market and checked on their wares, slowly checking off the long list of supplies the circus needed a restock on. She was to cause no trouble on this trip. None whatsoever! She made a promise to herself and to her brother. No accidental stabbings on this day. She will have the utmost control!
Kesi deftly navigated the crowded market. Her eyes bounced from one stall to the next, quickly examining and determining the value of the wares before the merchants could even open their mouths. She knew exactly what she was looking for, she had bought it dozens of times before. Any attempt to upcharge Kesi would be met with a sharp glare and for her to immediately look for a new seller. Kesi was in the process of buying new fabrics for her acrobat’s costumes when she heard drunken slurs from behind her.
“Is that girl, lookit! That… that snake charmer!” One man said. Kesi turned her head and saw that it was Idiot and Dumbass from the night before. The two of them had the audacity to treat her like one of the circus whores. Grabbing her, shoving money at her, Kesi just about snapped their neck right then.
“I’ll show her a real snake to charm,” Dumbass snickered as the two continued to stumble towards the girl. Kesi rolled her eyes and dropped the cloth, slipping through the crowd. She at least felt relieved that she wore clothes today that was dark enough to conceal a dagger. She could lure them into an ally way, slit their throats before they even had the chance to scream. It would be easy, too easy. The two were drunk imbeciles. Kesi has killed snakes smarter than the two of them.
No, no. Behave Kesi. No stabbings on this trip. She thought bitterly. Their bodies were too large for her to properly drag anyway, especially in daylight. Her blood-thirst would have to be sated on a different day. This was all so horribly inconvenient.
Kesi continued maneuvering around until she made it to the docks. That was when the crowds began to thin and she saw the two men again, a little ways away. Her nose wrinkled in annoyance. What if she pushed them into the river? They were probably too inebriated to swim anyhow. The water was a perfect device to get rid of bodies too.
Once again dark orbs bounced around. What to do, what to do. Ah… They landed on a fairly tall man. He was a lean man, and his darker skin hinted at hours spent in the sun. He would do nicely, Kesi decided. Perhaps a man can ward the two away. Or, at the very least, this stranger could be the new subject of their ire and allow Kesi the chance to slip away.
“Hey, mister!” Kesi called to the stranger. She moved to his side, linking arms with him. “Let’s go on a date, mister.” She said, as she bit her lip. Her eyes glanced over her shoulder to the two men. “Pretty please?” The dark orbs returned to the man, looking up at him with wide, innocent eyes.

Saro was once more at the docks of Cairo, they had unloaded the ship, and his parents along with some of the other crew mates were busy contacting their usual black market contacts to sell off the goods they had procured during their time upon the seas. Saro was given the time to himself, and he hadn’t yet decided what he wanted to do. He didn’t feel like getting into anything too crazy, at least not yet. He was thinking about something a little more tame for that night, he had a while in Egypt and he could get into some trouble another day.
Apparently though, the fates were thinking differently, as suddenly he was being grabbed by a woman and asked to go on a date. His gaze followed hers as she looked behind them and he spotted two men that were likely following her. He realized that this was likely her attempt at escaping those two men and what ever they had planned for her if they caught her alone. Normally Saro wouldn’t meddle in such things, it was none of his business. He couldn’t be some hero for every person who needed it.
But she didn’t give him much of a choice, considering she grabbed him and put him on the spot in front of the two men and the other witnesses around the docks. He looked back at her and put a grin on his face, might as well play the part at least.
He nodded.
“Of course my lady, let’s go then.” He agreed, as if this was a totally normal and agreed upon date that they were going on. He of course did not plan on taking her on a date or anything close to it. Not to say she wasn’t beautiful, it just wasn’t exactly the situation that made him particularly want to get to know her in that way, though for all he knew she was a lovely person.
The whole situation was weird, why were those men after her anyways? For all he knew she had done something to them to deserve to be caught by them. But they also didn’t seem the sort to stop and talk it out, they seemed rather drunk.
He figured he could play along, escort this woman some where safe and then go on with his evening without what ever the hell this was.
And so he started forward, as if with a purpose, as if the woman beside her was someone he was looking to romance.
“You were late, I was starting to think you would never show up.” He said, the men behind them likely to hear him, though the raised eyebrow and questioning look was directed at her, and they would not see the confusion he held.
Who was this woman and why was he chosen to be her fake date? There were other people at the docks, so why of all of them had she chosen the random foreign man? He supposed he could always ask her if she didn’t take off as soon as they were away from these men.

Kesi realized that her ever-shifting mood and proclivity towards violence could be a liability for the circus. She didn’t necessarily feel guilt towards it, Kesi never felt guilty a day in her life. She did, however, understand at least somewhat the need for caution. She didn’t want to anger or upset Amenemhat, and should her actions bring any trouble to The Tempest of Set that would be exactly what happens.
So when the stranger decided to play along with her antics, Kesi could not help but perk up. A wide, genuine smile appeared on her face, and her eyes gleamed with excitement. She loved it when people were fun. The world was far too boring for her liking. She picked the perfect man for the job, clearly.
She followed the man, one soft hand on his muscled arm looking as couply as two strangers could be. A small thought crossed her mind as to where on the world these two were going, but that quickly disappeared as the man spoke. “Oh, oh yes. I got tied up at the ma-”
“That’s our whore he’s takin’, he is!” Idiot drunkenly said as he came stumbling towards the pair. Kesi wrinkled her nose. Could the two not take a hint? Also, she was not a whore. How dare they continue to call her a whore! She’d slice their tongues out and make them choke on it for even thinking of uttering such insults. Kesi of Alexandria was many things. She was a killer, she was excitable, and she was freak, but she was no whore.
Kesi felt her jaw clench and her gait speed up just a bit. She was beginning to see red. It was taking her full willpower, something she had very little of, just to keep from fighting them in the broad daylight. “Market,” she said through her teeth, finishing what she said before the very rude interruption. “There was very lovely clo-”
“I think she’s ignoring us!” Dumbass finally came to realize. Their voices were closer, much closer. She could smell the alcohol now mixed with the sweat that was coming from their pours from chasing Kesi so far. It was enough to make her gag. Well, really anything from the two of them was enough to make her gag. They were disgusting creatures, worse than the dung produced by the circus’s camels and lions.
”Oi! Give us the slut. We’ll treat her real nice!” Idiot grabbed the nice stranger’s shoulder. Kesi’s eyes flashed suddenly. She felt the blood boiling in her veins. Her heart was so loud that she could hear it in her ears, pounding. She was going to lose her temper. Any second now.
“Keep your hands off of him!” She snapped, defending the random man. Only she was allowed to touch this stranger, not these gross, slimy, drunk assholes who were so desperate for a woman’s touch that Kesi was sure even the prostitutes in their dreams turned them away. “And I am not a whore.”

Saro heard the drunks call her a whore as they walked, and it didn’t really bother him. For all he knew it could be an accurate notation. He had no idea what her situation was, or what her connection with these men were. He had just sort of gotten involved in the middle of this unwillingly, but hey at least it was something slightly interesting he supposed.
He sped up with her as she sped up, and could practically feel the anger radiating off of her. He had no idea what she was like, or if this was going to end up with a bit of blood on their hands. It wouldn’t be the first time Saro had taken a life, and it likely wouldn’t be the last. But he tried to avoid murdering in the middle of the city where guards or witnesses may see and he might see himself into some trouble.
Then she snapped as one of them grabbed Saro’s shoulder, and he knew that he needed to try to calm the situation down, either that or he would need to be ready to fight, as he did not think these two drunken idiots were in any state to listen to reason.
He placed a hand on his ‘dates’ arm and gave her a small smile.
“It’s okay my dear, I can handle them.” He said, trying to give her the chance to back off and cool down a little while he tried to talk some sense into the two men that she had been trying to get away from.
“Now now, we’re all civilized people here. So my beautiful woman here has made it very clear that she has no interest in socializing with you, so I suggest you turn around and find your way back to your homes, or perhaps the nearest tavern, and we will forget this ever happened.” He said, giving them a charming smile, but knowing that his silver tongue likely wouldn’t make it through their haze of alcohol. He had been in that state many times in fact, so he knew just how thick of a wall it put up.
As expected, the men started drunkenly laughing and spouting off something about kicking Saro’s ass and taking the woman anyways.
He sighed and shook his head.
“I didn’t want it to come down to this.” He said, the two men seemed to be unarmed, and in their drunken state, he figured that a quick beating would send them running home quick enough. They wouldn’t prove to be a challenge, that much he knew.
One of the men yelled some threat at him and tried to take a swing, but Saro easily dodged it, grabbing the man’s arm before he was able to pull it back over to himself, he used the man’s weight and momentum against him and flung him over his shoulder, and he hit the ground with a thud.
The second man yelled something about Saro hurting his friend and came after him again, and he shook his head.
“Here we go..” He muttered to himself.

“Here we go..” He muttered to himself.
Oh! The anger immediately left Kesi. This was fun! They were fighting. Goodie, Kesi couldn’t be blamed if a fight started without her initiating it. She watched as the man went to grapple the stranger only for him to deftly move out of the way, sweeping his leg as he did, causing the other drunk jerk to fall to the ground as well.
Dumbass got back to his feet and move back towards the stranger, teetering back and forth. He took a swing, but stranger managed to easily counter it with his own fist, spilling blood for the first time. Kesi’s eyes were wide with excitement. This was great! Blood! Heck yeah! This was the best first date ever! Kesi was so happy that she barely noticed Idiot got up to his feet and made a grab at Kesi.
“Eep!” Kesi did a small squeak just barely ducking his grasp. She brought her own fist into the fray, punching Idiot in the crotch. The man’s knees buckled and he groaned. Just as he did that Kesi heard a thud from behind her as Dumbass basically fell into stranger’s fist, knocking himself out cold.
“Oi!” Kesi heard from a ways away. Her eyes zeroed in on a guard who was starting to make his way towards them.
“Come on! Let’s go!” Kesi said quickly as she grabbed the stranger’s hand and pulled him away, sprinting through the docks and into the various alleys of Cairo to lose the chasing guard. Kesi navigated through the labyrinth until she was certain they had lost them. Finally, she stopped, catching her breath.
Wide, dark eyes looked up at the stranger. “That was so fun! You were so cool, mister! Did you see the look on his face? He was all like ah! And you flipped him over your back like he was nothing. Which, to be fair, he was nothing. Oh! And did you see me? The guy went to grab me and I was all like wha-bam! He never saw me coming! Oh, oh, and the blood! There was so much! You’re so strong, mister!”
Kesi suddenly grabbed the stranger’s hand, examining his knuckles. “You didn’t hurt them, did you? We have a doctor at the circus. His name is Rekhmire. He’s a little boring, to be honest. But he’s a good doctor. He’d fix you right up.” Kesi didn’t typically like owing someone, and to be honest she didn’t really think she owed this stranger anything. He made the decision to help her. But, at the very least, if he was injured she could take him to the circus. But not Dumbass and Idiot. They get to groan and hurt and get looked at by guards. She hoped they rot in prison or something. Or died. Kesi would be perfectly fine if they died.
She dropped the stranger’s hand. “You’re like a real hero, mister! You should come to the circus. You would have fun there. Oh, and maybe my brother will thank you!” Getting a thank you from Nem was the greatest gift a person could ever ask for. He should feel honored.

Saro loved fighting, he had been in so many fights in his life, sometimes he won, sometimes he lost. Most of the time he was completely ass over head drunk.
This time though he was (mostly) sober and the adrenaline from the fight was a high in and of itself. He ducked and swung and had a great time with the two drunks that had decided to harrass this woman. He definitely had no plans to be fighting anyone that night, at least not that early in the day.
Had she not shouted for him and grabbed his hand, he might have stayed and fought off the guard too, just for fun. But she pulled him away and he didn’t really fight it, he just followed her, fleeing the scene where the two men had gotten their asses kicked. Though they might be too drunk to even realize what had just happened. They would probably tell the story tomorrow and say that they were the ones who had won the fight or something along those lines.
Saro laughed a little as the woman excitedly chattered, only catching some of what she was even saying before she grabbed his hand to look at his knuckles and offer a doctor.
“No, no. I’m fine I promise. It’s the first time I’ve had to teach someone a lesson.” He said, giving her a bit of a grin.
“There is no need to thank me, honestly. They deserved what they got for their actions.” He said simply and truthfully.
“Nor do I require a thanks from your brother. While I appreciate the sentiment, I was happy to be of service. And aside from that, I rather enjoyed it. Definitely more interesting than what I had planned for my day.” He said, pushing some of his long hair out of his face, laughing once more.
“But, the circus does sound rather interesting. I’ve been to one or two in my life and thoroughly enjoyed it.” He said, perhaps he would end up at the circus, and if it was like any of the other circuses he had been to, there would be plenty of wine and some gorgeous people. The dancers and acrobats tended to be attractive people, to bring in crowds with their sex appeal. And Saro was a sucker for beautiful men and women.
“Lead on then, lets go check out this circus you speak of, if it truly is enjoyable, I will bring the rest of the ships crew tomorrow night so that they might experience it as well!” He declared, if she was still willing to bring him. He didn’t see why not, these places needed to drive business in some how. Though this was a strange way to do so, and one that he did not think she used often.
He couldn’t imagine that she ran to random strangers and got them into fist fights with drunken men often. Or perhaps she did, who was he to judge. He had gone along with her so far.

Who would have thought that Kesi running away from two asshole men to keep herself from murdering them in broad daylight would have led to Kesi bringing a stranger to the circus! A stranger that, if she played her cards right, would bring even more people the following evening! Is this what being good brings? If she isn’t violent in any way good things happen to the circus?
Well, that’s boring.
But why was Kesi going to complain? She still lit up at the man’s acceptance like a child given a surprise present. Her smile was really wide and her eyes were brimming with excitement. This is it, from this day forward this man was her friend. Kesi had a very peculiar definition of friendship. She only cared about those who she deemed fun, which typically was violent in nature. Friends were like toys to the girl. She had her favorites, and she liked playing with them a lot. When they got boring though, she would discard them, without even a pang of sadness.
“You’ll really, really like the circus, mister! There’s lot of fun things to see and do. We have lots of drinks and food, and then we have some really cool performers. Like acrobats, and jugglers, and really cute and amazing snake charmers!” Kesi said giddily, “We’re known all across of Egypt. We’ve even gone to Judea before!” And Kesi hated every second of it.
Kesi led him back through Cairo. She winded down the busy streets and through the crowds of people going about their day to day lives. Typically this would be a colorful experience. The streets of Cairo were so lively, especially on a busy market day. But true life isn’t seen until one steps onto the circus grounds.
Just outside the city of Cairo is where the Tempest of Set can sometimes be found. It was a place filled with wonder, amazement… and magic. Fire eaters played with their flame, jugglers tossed sharp knives into the air, lion tamers played with their cats, and the guests were filled with laughs, awe, and excitement. This was where true life could be found. Just ignore the bodies that had to be made in order to get to this position.
“Oh, mister! You have to see Zein! He’s really, really good!” Kesi pointed over to where the juggler was, currently wowing a small crowd with his skills. Despite being one of the newest performers in the Tempest of Set, Zein quickly stood out to be among the best. Kesi was always wowed by just how amazing he was. Then again… that could be said about everyone here.
Once the crowd was thinned, Kesi happily hopped up next to Zein. “Zein! This is… uhrm, this is…” Kesi was terrible with names. She hated names. They never stuck with her unless the person was truly important. Did they even introduce each other? Probably not, Kesi never liked doing that. “I’m on my ‘first date,’ Zein!” Kesi immediately changed the subject, instead giving the juggler a joking wink. “He saved me from drunken jerks.” Well, no he saved them from Kesi, but she wasn’t about to say all that.

Zein was practicing a new routine for an upcoming performance. He stood in an area outside of their tents, throwing a series of odd objects through the a, twisting and flipping through the air every so often throw in a different element of surprise. That was what made a performance. People expected to see jugglers throw random objects into the air, but they did not expect to see the juggler perform incredible feats and catch those objects. It was up to Zein to surprise them. And he loved doing it.
The day was warm and he had already worked up a bit of sweat, eventually stripping off his shirt to cool down. He didn’t mind the added benefit of attracting those who came by. Somehow, during his practice, he had managed to attract a small audience. Those who wandered by had stopped to stay when they saw what he was doing. Previously, Zein might have asked for some money for this performance, but now it was a matter of promotion for the show. Those who saw him here might be well enough intrigued to pay real money for a performance. With that thought in mind, Zein ended his impromptu performance, informing his gatherers of when they could see the entire act. He did receive a few coins in tips, which he took gratefully—a life on the streets meant he would never say no to money, but he took more satisfaction in knowing that many of these people seemed to like him well enough to want to come back. That was the real reward.
As people dispersed, Zein looked up to see Kesi approaching with an unfamiliar figure. He gave her a smile as she greeted him, though turned a more critical gaze to the man next to her. Who was he that she didn’t even know his name? That did not feel like a good omen to him. What she said next did nothing to make him feel better. First date? Oh, what was Kesi up to? And why was this man involved?
He had so many questions and more than a few thoughts in the back of his mind that asked him why he cared so much. This circus was becoming more and more his family now and Zein wanted to protect that.
The juggler didn’t set down some of his juggling tools, deciding that it might make him appear more intimidating should he need to look it. “Well, that sounds admirable,” Zein concluded, though he wasn’t sure that Kesi needed saving, knowing her. “Welcome to our circus, Kesi’s date. We should be glad to have you. I’m Zein as you may have gathered. And you are?”
Turning to Kesi, he asked, “Did you promise him a tour or shall I do the honors?” He had no idea what had stumbled across his path, but supposed he could be prepared for it.

Saro wasn’t sure he had ever heard of the circus, but he was on the water a lot, and talk of the local attractions didn’t tend to make it to sailors. He wouldn’t mind checking it out at least, perhaps there was something awesome three, perhaps it would be boring and he would leave early. Either way, it was worth at least checking it out. No harm no foul if things suck.
He followed the woman through Cairo, noting their path as they went in case he had to make a quick retreat or something. He was always one to have a few escape paths in case it was needed. More often than not it was needed. He tended to get himself into at least some sort of minor trouble.
Saro looked around as they made it to the circus, a few things catching his eye. Mostly some attractive performers, who he flashed a charming grin to and a bit of a wink. Saro couldn’t help but flirt, it was in his nature. And hey, maybe there would be some fun to be had after all, with the looks he was getting from some of the performers.
He followed her as she went to introduce him to a rather good looking performer, who, lucky for Saro was not currently wearing a shirt.
The pirate flashed the man a friendly grin as Kesi tried to introduce him but had no clue what his name was.
“Saro.” He said, giving the smallest of bows in introduction, both to Zein and to Kesi.
“It was the most interesting date of my life. Consisted of some drunken creeps and a fist fight.” He explained, hoping the other would realize it wasn’t actually a date. It had been one of the strangest and most random experiences of his life, but so far it had at least been unique. He couldn’t say that he had ever experienced anything quite like this.
“I’d love a tour.” He said, his focus still more on Zein than anything. The odds of this man actually being into men as well were slim, he found it was a lot rarer to find than he wished, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t at least enjoy the view while it was there in front of him. Not his fault if the other male was shirtless and sweaty.
“So what else does the Tempest of Set offer? So far the juggling was impressive, I definitely want to see more.” He stated, looking between the two as he waited to hear what else was there. Saro had never been talented, not in the art of performing at least. He had many other talents, including a silver tongue and many talents upon the seas, but being an entertainer was never something that held any interest for him. His interests did not lie in providing others with enjoyment, but rather providing himself with enjoyment. The trail of scorned lovers, and illegal ventures that followed him showed as much.

Yay! How exciting! Her new friend was interested in the circus! Well, of course he was. It was the circus after all. There was so much to be excited about. Saro was going to have a blast. And Zein was playing along too! This is why Kesi loved Zein. He was so fun. “Yeah, join us on our tour, Zein! We can do it together!”
So what else does the Tempest of Set have to offer?
Kesi was filled with so much excitement she was going to explode! She’s used to entertaining people with her own act, or directing them towards other brilliant acts if she were to wrap up. But she never walked by someone on her day off discovering the circus. Oh this was going to be so fun! He’s going to be so amazed and Kesi will get to witness it all! Yay! Maybe then he’ll come back! Maybe he’ll bring his friends! And then everyone will know just how amazing the Tempest of Set is!
Cool it, Kesi. You gotta play it cool, She took a deep breath, but she couldn’t hide her beaming smile. “We have lots! Fire dancers and sword eaters and fortune tellers and acrobats! Oh… Oh! Zein! Let’s show him our act!” Kesi was bouncing as she grabbed Zein’s arm. “C’mon let’s show him! It’ll be fun! Sneak peek!” They had been working on something new together. It hadn’t been shown to anyone yet. Snakes and swords were a dangerous mix, but Kesi was sure they would get it perfect if they had an audience.
Without even waiting to hear Zein’s response Kesi started running ahead. “You two continue the tour! I’ll catch up!” She called over her shoulder as she sprinted through the grounds dodging people left and right. She entered her snake tent and looked to her various snakes. Well Apep was, of course, going to be part of the show. He was her very best snake. But who else… hmmm… Kesi tapped her chin looking at the others. Who wasn’t likely to bite Zein or Saro and injure them? (Or, at the least, who wouldn’t kill them?) Oh, she knew! She picked three other snakes, carefully gathering them in a basket, while Apep coiled around her neck and arm. Kesi gathered her pungi, and left her tent once more to catch up to Zein and Saro.
It didn’t take too long before she found them again. “Saro!” Kesi said brightly. “This is Apep,” She introduced her snake, before glancing at Zein. “These are different ones from last time, don’t worry.” She whispered. Last time they did this… well, it could have went better. But this time would be perfect. And Saro would be amazed. What if he never wanted to leave? The circus could always use more family members! And Kesi could always use more friends.

Zein was slowly taking in what situation had transpired that had led the two together. It appeared less of an intended first date and more of something that had come from unusual circumstances. Well, if Kesi was involved, he very much doubted that they were truly unusual. She had a way of attracting the most interesting situations. And people. This man seemed among them. Clearly he was good enough that he had come to her aid…if she had needed it. But at the very least he had provided some sort of assistance or else Kesi wouldn’t have brought him here today.
He hadn’t planned on giving a tour, having just finished up practicing. He would have liked a bath, but decided to put it off for a while longer, noticing how the man was looking him over. Men weren’t Zein’s flavor of choice, but he didn’t mind it when his form was appreciated. He shot a wink back Saro’s direction, not caring if it sent mixed signals, and turned to Kesi as she began to describe the types of things the circus had to offer. His passive listening turned to dread when she suggested that they show their new friend their act. Working on it had been something that had pushed even Zein to his limits. He had never minded snakes until he had joined the circus and since then, he positively loathed them. Being bitten by a poisonous creature wasn’t exactly his idea of fun.
However, Zein did not give up easily, returning to the performance when Kesi had asked. Of course, this time, he was a little less careful when juggling his swords. If they happened to slice one of the slithering reptiles in half…well, he wasn’t going to lose any sleep over it. Better them than him.
Kesi ran on ahead, presumably to get her little devil creatures, leaving Zein to lead Saro along. “Has Kesi told you what she does in the circus?” he asked the man, wondering just how much conversation the two of them had managed to have. Upon hearing Saro’s answer, he followed up with “Do you care for snakes?” Zein could not mask his own disdain for the creatures, harboring a secret wish that they would all go die.
When Kesi came back with a snake in hand, he had to stop himself from visibly recoiling. Why had he agreed to do this again? There was no way that he wanted to see those slithering tongues and beady eyes. A promise from Kesi that these were different prompted a pained smile and grimace. He very much doubted that. It was a shame that he carried two juggling knives on his pants or else he would have declined to do anything at all. As it was, his hand rested on one knife, itching to send it through the heart of the little devil.
“You may want to step back,” he said dryly to Saro. “They like to bite.”

Saro wasn’t entirely sure if he was interested in the circus, or just the eye candy it had to offer. Either way, he was going along with this random adventure and seeing where it would take him. There wasn’t much Saro feared, he wasn’t an idiot who thought nothing was dangerous, he just knew his skills and his luck. Nothing had managed to get him yet.
But his new friend, the woman he had been on this ‘date’ with at least seemed overly happy to be showing him around the circus. Maybe a little too excited. He supposed if she enjoyed what she did, then she would be excited to share that with others. She was so strange though, this whole interaction felt like some weird dream he’d had after a night of drinking too much.
He was a little more interested when he found out that he was going to get a performance just for him. Especially since Zein was going to be involved.
Saro shook his head when the other man asked if he had been told what Kesi did at the circus. He didn’t know much of anything about this woman. She hadn’t exactly been keen to share many details, nor had they had much of a chance to talk even if she wanted to. Things had been one event after another and Saro was just going with what ever was happening.
“No, she hasn’t told me much.” He admitted with a laugh as the two men walked together after Kesi had disappeared off to do what ever she was doing. But his next question gave Saro a good idea of what she had gone off to do.
“Can’t say I’m a fan, but I won’t run screaming.” He admitted. He was never a huge snake person, but he wasn’t necessarily scared of them. Though he knew of ones that could kill a man, so he definitely gave them a healthy respect and plenty of distance. Except for the time he’d caught one and tossed it in the bed of one of his crew mates who was having a hard time rising to get to work after a night of heavy drinking. That had been hilarious.
He got the feeling the other man was not a fan of the creatures himself. He didn’t sound overly happy about the idea of having to perform near them, or perhaps with them.
Shortly after, Kesi was returning and sure enough, there was a snake coiled around her. He gave her a little smile, though he kept his eyes on the beast just in case it decided it didn’t like him.
The daggers he carried suddenly felt a lot more obvious to him. There if he needed them.
When Zein told him to step back, he gladly did exactly that, moving back to a respectable distance to give them room to do what ever they were about to do. He couldn’t say he was too sad to move further away from the snakes.
“I can’t wait to see what’s in store.” He called out to them, truly he was curious to see what was about to happen.

“I can’t wait to see what’s in store.” He called out to them, truly he was curious to see what was about to happen.
Kesi was innocent to the conversation the two were having while she was away. Had she been there, she would have fought with Zein- whether or not Saro was there. For one, it was Zein’s fault. Kesi trained her snakes incredibly well. She would never put them in a performance, even a practice one, if she had a fear they wouldn’t listen to her and bite her partner or anyone else. But Zein was in the wrong spot, not matter what he might argue otherwise. He was in the wrong spot and the snake got scared because of the sword and the snake had reacted naturally. He was threatened! Sharp objects were around! If Kesi had sharp objects flying in her direction of course she would defend herself. Unless it was her brother that was doing that. Her brother could stab her all he wants (and she had a very particular preference as to what he was stabbing her with).
But she was innocent to the whole conversation. She was not there to defend her precious babies. Though if she were there, she certainly wouldn’t feel guilty if another one chose to bite him. The only sad part about it would be that she had to kill yet another snake.
While Kesi may not have heard his words to Saro, she certainly could see the pained smile that was on his face. The unfortunate thing (or fortunate, at least for Zein) was that Kesi had no understanding of how normal people interacted. Emotions were complicated, and social nuances went right over her head. That smile, however pained it was, looked genuine to Kesi. So in return, she gave him a bright one back, completely oblivious to the real thoughts behind the man who had a hand resting on his knife. Relief flood through her, thinking (at least for now) that Zein had gotten over his distaste for her snakes. What a relief, too. This would make the performance so much easier. After all… snakes could sense fear.
“Alrighty! Are you ready for the performance of your life?” Kesi giggled to her ‘date’ as she allowed the snake to slither onto the floor, in between the juggler and the charmer. Of course, it was an appropriate distance away, and where Zein should be standing. And of course, they would move, and Kesi was now more equipped for when Zein would make a mistake. She wouldn’t trust that the Judean knew what he was doing. Even though Zein was so skilled he was already in the Clique- he was still fairly new and still had so much to learn. She wouldn’t want him to get hurt again, even if it would lead him to learn from his failures. Once was enough.
Kesi waited until Zein gave her a queue before a low note came from her pungi. And like every time she performed, the world seemed to have melted away. Only this time it was different. For typically it was just her and her snakes, a melody coming from her instrument and the two sharing a dance. But Zein found his way to her little world. It was the three of them, in harmony, together… as the circus should be.

Zein was secretly contriving all the possible ways he could kill these snakes without anyone thinking that it was him. Maybe if he snuck in during the night? Zein was good at sneaking—he’d always been. Surely he could get in and out of the enclosure without anyone knowing. Still, it was too risky, he thought. Someone could see no matter how careful he was. And then he would be kicked out of the circus so quickly he wouldn’t know what to do with himself. No, it was best he think of another plan. Though he’d been thinking of other plans ever since he first was bitten and hadn’t yet followed through on any of them. By now it was just habit to wish ill upon the creatures whenever he saw them. Kesi seemed to have no idea and that suited him just fine.
The juggler gave Saro a pained look as he went to take his place—far away from where Kesi was. Honestly, it was like they were giving two different performances. And this time he most certainly was not using knives, no matter what Kesi said. The audience would have to just be fine with that fact. Zein was not risking his life because of a snake. Ask him to hang from a rope with his foot and juggle? Sure. How about set something on fire and juggle with that? Most definitely. Zein was game for any challenge. Except snakes. He’d thought they would have been fine too, but snakes were uncontrollable, no matter what Kesi said. She had better control over them than the average person, but nobody could have it completely.
A feeling of dread came over him when she asked if Saro was ready for the performance of his life. Zein’s life, more like. It was soon about to be in complete disarray. Why hadn’t he just walked away when he spotted Kesi and pretended he hadn’t seen her? That would have been so much easier. Now he was looped into a performance that he had no interest in ever doing again. There were very few things in life where Zein drew the line. Returning to his homeland for a performance was one. Performing with snakes was quickly becoming two. He’d agreed to try again, but was already regretting that decision.
The man felt himself freeze as Kesi set the snake loose. What was she thinking? What was he thinking? This was foolish. He was glad Saro was a virtual stranger or else he would have felt quite ridiculous showing such fear, but the memory of the snake bite was far too unpleasant. Eventually, he told himself to snap out of it and began juggling a simple pattern with his clubs, keeping an eye on the snake at all times. He was not going to let it get close to him. Not at all.
He admired how Kesi could close her eyes and pretend that nothing else existed, but he also wanted her to focus on her snake. What if it came to get him? He wasn’t so sure he believed in the power she held over it, even though it seemed to be obeying for now. Normally, Zein allowed himself to relax and enjoy his juggling, but this time he was on edge, even a bit tense. It wasn’t ideal for juggling, but he wasn’t so unskilled that it would cause him to mess up.
After what felt like hours, but was likely only a few minutes, Zein couldn’t bear it anymore. He looked at Saro and mimicked that he should clap, while catching the final clubs in the air. “Help me,” he mouthed, hoping the man would get the hint and pretend the performance was over. Then Zein could get away from the vile reptile and never perform near it again.

Saro had to admit it was a little bit amusing, the polar differences in the two performers demeanour. The woman was excited, the snake was there and she was doing a performance for this random man she had met only a couple hours earlier. The other guy didn’t want to be there, especially when the snake came out. He had to bite his tongue a little to keep from laughing at the looks on their faces as they squared off to show Saro their performance.
He nearly lost it and started laughing as the male performer silently pleaded for help while Kesi had her eyes closed. He thought for a moment that he should keep it going, just for his own entertainment of watching how uncomfortable Zein was. But, he figured he would be nice and help the other out.
And so he started clapping.
“Wow! That was unbelievable!” He called out, enthusiasm in his voice, though he didn’t entirely feel it. While it had been pretty cool, it certainly hadn’t been the most impressive thing that he had ever seen in his life.
If he was being honest, this situation was getting a little boring. It had been fairly exciting with the randomness of it all, but now he just wanted to go and get drunk and fall into the arms of some stranger for the night.
“Kesi, thank you so much for this wonderful experience. It has been a day to remember. For now, duty calls. I hope we meet again. You as well.” He said, flashing Zein a smile. He gave them both a flourished bow before he waved and turned to take his leave from the circus.
Well, that had been something new, that was for sure. He shook his head a little and chuckled to himself as he walked. How was it that he managed to get himself into these situations, even when he had simply been walking along minding his own business. This time he hadn’t even been doing anything to draw attention to himself.
It just seemed like chaos would find him where ever he was, and he had no problems with it. Life was meant to be fun, after all.
