What did she know about that girl, really? Other than her name? Nothing. Of course, Chara knew the names of every girl in court, but that didn’t mean she knew them. As her family was beginning to make political maneuvers, so was she. Her mother could handle the older generation, but girls like Hebe of Antonis were ripe for the picking. As such, she was sure the invitation she’d sent to the Antonis girl would be received graciously. It was no surprise it was accepted, of course, and so Chara had arranged an excursion to Attictris, which was quickly becoming one of her more favored Stravos provinces.
Her prized horses, Atreus and Eunike were housed there, but there was a lovely countryside as well. What better way to bond with another girl than a stroll through some of the finest vineyards in all of Greece? The carriage ride had been full of girlish chatter Chara thought reminded her of her youngest days. Back when crushes on the sons of lords were secrets kept between friends. That, of course, was years ago. It was time to look towards the future, or rather, control the future. Hebe might have no place in the senate, but her father would be one worth swaying.
When the carriage ride came to an end, Chara allowed her companion to exit first before she took the girl by the arm and started for the vineyard. “Come now, Hebe! There’s so much to see!” A sort of feign enthusiasm, really, but if it would help lay the groundwork for the more important things, so be it. Careful not to drag the Antonis girl, Chara fell in stride beside her as they entered the vineyard.
“So tell me, Hebe, how are you? And how is your family?”

Hebe had been thrilled to receive an invitation to accompany Chara of Stravos to Attictris, She had never spoken more than a few words to her, but she had admired her most of her life and Chara had become something of a role model to the young girl. As a child, she would often imitate the way she walked and smiled and laughed, practicing in her mirror. Sometimes when she was alone, she had pretended that she actually was Chara, going to balls and being admired by the most handsome young men in Athenia.
And so she was ecstatic to get the chance to spend some time with her. The request had come out of the blue, and she wondered if Danae had spoken of her after their tutoring session. Hebe could think of nothing they had said or did that would impress Chara to the point of asking her to join her on a trip to one of the Stravos provinces. She had feared that her parents would say no, since the two Houses were on opposite sides of the current political situation. Chara, of course, supported her brother while the Antonis family would rather almost anyone take the throne but Elias.
Hebe had hoped that her father would assert his own claim. If he became King, Athenia’s problems would be over. But even in this state of turmoil, he didn’t want to rule. His youngest daughter sometimes wondered why. Did he not want the responsibility or did he fear failure? Nobody could do worse than Elias. He had turned a peaceful kingdom into chaos.
Her parents agreed that she could go with Chara. Maybe they hoped that the noblewoman would tell her something that would help their cause, which she supposed was to proclaim Emilia Queen in her sister’s absence and to cancel the toxic betrothal with Elias. She’d never asked who they supported. As she lived in the palace half the time, it was probably better that she didn’t know.
Now she sat in the carriage with her idol, prattling about boys, clothes, boys, jewelry, boys, horses, and boys. Hebe crushed on every handsome noble boy she saw, but she had no real desire to do more than dance with them at balls. It was what she thought Chara expected to hear, and so that’s what she talked about. When the carriage stopped, she hopped out. Her companion eagerly grabbed her arm and began pulling her toward the vineyard. Will she let me have some wine or are we just going to munch on grapes?
When Chara asked about herself and her family, Hebe smiled. “I spend two weeks of every month in the palati and two weeks at home.” Most likely, the Stravos woman already knew that. “I adore serving Princess Emilia and wish I could stay there all the time so I wouldn’t have to study anymore.” She wrinkled her nose. "I hate studying. “My family is doing well, though sometimes my sisters can be annoying.
“How about you? Do you get along well with your siblings, Chara?”

There were two answers she sought from the Antonis girl, though the order in which she got them was not clear. Firstly, she wanted to glean any information she could from Hebe about the ongoings of her family and to a lesser extent, Princess Emilia. Secondly, she wanted to determine if Hebe could be molded into a useful asset. To hear what the rest of Athenia thought through the mouth of someone not so clearly hostile to her family might prove useful. Truth be told, Chara was far more interested in finding a way to use Hebe than she was getting information from the girl. If she received little in the ways of useful details but became a step closer to having an inadvertent informant, then she would be happy. If not, another swooning admirer would never be turned down.
The conversation they were having was admittedly, girlish, though that did not particularly bother Chara. Hebe was, after all, not yet ready to be presented to the courts. There would be little to talk about then save for family and tutoring. Chara showed Hebe a smile, a tad more genuine than usual. In a way, Chara could empathize with the young Antonis girl. She also remembered being fourteen and just a year shy of court. It was that empathy Chara intended to use in order to meet her own ends. “My cousin is certainly a joy to be around. I’m glad you two get along so well. I know she could benefit from spending more time around ladies her age.”
“Oh come now, Hebe. You are a very clever girl. Surely you don’t do that much studying?” It was a trick question, of course. Chara did not believe Hebe was an idiot -- far from it. An idiot would not do well in Chara’s close circle which was an honor she was considering extending to Hebe. The duration of this little outing would determine if Hebe proved herself worthy of such a thing or not.
Hebe’s question made Chara hum thoughtfully. Was Hebe herself trying to fish for information or was it an innocent question? Chara did not fully believe Hebe would attempt to ascertain such knowledge of her own accord, but perhaps the girl had been led to ask such questions by her family? She was not yet sure. Regardless, her answer did not betray her contemplation. “I could not possibly imagine having as many sisters as you do, Hebe. As much as I love Danae, I do believe only one sister is enough.”
“But Elias, Danae and I do get along as well as anyone else. I do feel, however, that Danae feels a tad...lonely. I’m not certain how to approach the subject with her without making her feel as though I’m trying to baby her. You have plenty of sisters -- how would you go about it?” There were a number of reasons the youngest Stravos felt alienated -- and rightfully so -- but getting genuine solutions was not what Chara was after. She wanted to test Hebe as they strolled every so casually through the vineyard.
Perhaps one of her questions would be answered soon.
