Nikos of Condos was looking forward to this night. His father actually wanted to spend time with him, to see what sort of life Nik lived outside of court and barony life. Nikos had always believed his father was not proud of him, did not approve of his thoughts and ambitions for the throne of Taengea. But recent events had quenched those feelings. His beloved father had told set him straight. Had told Nikos that he thought the young baron would rule well if given the chance. Nikolias loved his son. That's all Nikos had ever wanted to hear. He looked up to his father, was loyal to his father. That conversation had done much to repair their growing estrangement of the last decade. But there was still much work to be done on the father son relationship.
Nikos was dressed in a fine chiton and himation of Condos colors, but he wore little jewels this evening, aside from bands on his upper arms and his house insignia ring. He didn't like wearing too many flashy things when he went out to enjoy the night life of Argothia. While there wasn't an abundant amount of crime in the province, he knew there was enough. Pickpockets, straight up thieves. Even the finer prostitutes were skilled with slight of hand. So it was best to keep the amount of things that could me 'misplaced' to a minimum.
He stood on the steps of House Condos waiting for his father to ready himself and join him. A covered carriage was waiting for them in the drive, horses hitched and ready. Two well trained retainers that would attend to their needs and to their safety were standing by the carriage, waiting as well. Nikos silently wished for Nikolias to hurry up, but he would not verbally express this. Nikolias was only a couple weeks healed from his recent illness, and as such Nik would be patient. Something the young upstart baron only seemed to be able to do for his father... and perhaps his mother.
The Condos heir heard the doors open behind him. A smile crossed his features and he turned to see his father coming out. "Ah, fantastic. Are you ready for a night of adventure, my lord?"

"I am." Nikolias greeted his son with a smile as well. He knew he had perhaps appeared to be overly displeased with his son over the years- enough that Nikos rarely seemed to leave Doralis. But it had not been for lack of love of his son at all. He just simply worried that his son's seeming recklessness- plus wanting the crown- might do him in one day. The thought of losing his son sat like a heavy stone on his chest. Nikolias had been a doting father when the children were younger, perhaps because he had grown up without siblings himself. It was only as Nikos grew older that Nikolias began to fear for his son's life. But having told his son the other part of the truth about why he had voted for Irakles made him feel closer to him again. Perhaps with time Nikos might realize that all his father had ever wanted was his safety as well as his happiness, but that his wanting the crown so badly worried him. If Nikos died as a result of his desire, who would inherit House Condos? It worried him even now. But perhaps here was a happy medium, and if things played themselves out a certain way... well, who but the gods knew?
Nikolias also had a gift for his son tonight- a ring with an ice-blue gem. He noticed that Nikos sometimes liked to wear blue, presumably because it brought out his eyes. Perhaps having noticed such things would go a ways toward repairing their damaged relationship. As he entered the carriage, Mikolias thought that perhaps tonight would be even more relaxing than when he usually took time away, because having Nikos seem to understand his thoughts now took some pressure off of him in his personal life, even if political tension was currently high.

Nikos' smile grew when his father acknowledged that he was indeed ready to go. There had been a nagging feeling in the back of his mind that Nikolias would change his mind and back out at the last minute. It was not often that the younger Condos baron enjoyed his father's company over the years. Especially after the accusation the Head of House had leveled his way when he'd happened upon Nikos and a young Evangelina Leventi up in a tree together. That had been something that had wounded Nikos deeply, that his father had seemed to have so little faith in him to think he would do such a thing as to be kissing a child in a tree.
But tonight was about putting such things behind them. For forgiving each other any slights from years past and moving forward to repair their strained relationship. Tonight would be a fresh start. Nikos was determined for this to be so, for he loved and adored his father and wished for the man to be proud of him.
"Excellent. Let us be off then. The gambling tables wait for no one, not even a lord!" He laughed, and with a skip in his step, he followed his father into the waiting carriage. Within moments the vessel was moving, pulled by a pair of fine grey mares and guided by the retainers that would be lingering nearby for the night, to tend to the needs of their lords should the occasion arise. Nikos sat back in his seat, getting comfortable for it was a bit of a ride to Argothia. Plenty of time for conversation along the way. But where to start? The young baron held his hands in his lap, fidgeting with his house ring on his right hand as he gazed out the window in the door of the carriage. Nik eyed his father, trying to gauge how he really felt about the coming events of the night. "Are you fond of gambling, father? I have not known you to play often. I have always enjoyed a good game of chance and strategy." It seemed a bit of an awkward way to start the dialogue, but Nikos had felt compelled to break the silence growing between them.

As a rule, Nikolias gambled only when he was sure how much he might lose, which meant it was a rarity, especially due to his problems regarding reading written numbers. However, that did not necessarily mean he didn't enjoy it, just that he often had to be told how much to bet. Mostly, if he were honest, he enjoyed watching people squirm, which often seemed to be a good indicator of how well or how badly they were doing in their game of chance. Body language was not normally Nikolias' strong suit, but that he understood just fine. He just wished he were better at making other people squirm instead of them making him squirm!
"I have been known to on occasion. Mostly with horse races and such. But I know Argothia is more than that, and must have many things that are new even since the last time I was able to go. What is your favorite kind of game?" Nikolias asked his son. He himself could not often follow games of cards- how did the players manage to keep their faces so still?- but dice were easier, though both kinds of games were amusing to watch in their own way. Because people often seemed focused on keeping their luck from showing on their faces, card games were all the more entertaining when they failed!
He cleared his throat, preparing to present his gift. "That, I don't believe I know, but I do think I've noticed one of your favorite colors, yes? Take a look." The soft, icy blue of the gem would glitter tantalizingly when the ring box was opened, and hopefully what light there was would only serve to better display the gem in all its glory.

’…What is your favorite kind of game?’ ”Well, that’s not so cut and dry of an answer. Dice is nothing but chance and knowing when to quit. But cards… well… That’s all about reading people. Knowing how to bluff better than them. But the adrenaline both lend. It’s exciting and I very much enjoy it.” Nikos liked the high of winning more than the winning. He liked the thrilling excitement of the possibility of being beaten, but pulling through in the end. He was actually a rather sore loser sometime. Especially if he’d had too much wine.
’…I do think I’ve noticed one of your favorite colors, yes? Take a look.’ Nikos sat up straighter at this. Father had noticed something about him? Nik hadn’t even realized his father paid close enough attention to notice something like a preference of color. Intrigued, Nikos reached for the proffered jewel box. Opening it somewhat hesitantly for he didn’t know what to expect, his look of awe when he laid eyes on the gem-stoned ring was genuine. He held it up in a beam of light coming through the carriage window; the blue sapphire sparkled brilliantly, the gold band shining. ”Thank you, my lord. It’s a wonderful gift.” Nikos smiled at his father, a new hope springing for this night of male bonding. Maybe their relationship wasn’t too far gone after all, if Nikolias had bother to notice something like this. Nikos pulled the ring from the box and slid it on to the middle finger of his right hand. The band fit perfectly and looked like it belonged there.
Outside, the sun was setting and the scenery rolled along as the horses sped their carriage towards Argothia.

It did Nikolias' heart good to see his son smile. He was usually terrible at card games in particular due to his trouble with understanding body language and some facial expressions. Due to years of practice in the court, he was unsure how many people knew about either of his problems, but he'd be willing to lose all night in order to see that smile again. He began to see why some girls thought Nikos was so attractive when he smiled like that, as well, and Nikolias chuckled to himself. What would he do differently, if he had those young years to live over again?
No matter, life was the way it was, and if he had been a bit too serious previously, especially where his and Nikos' relationship was concerned, there was time to turn over a new leaf, starting with tonight. He hoped Nikos would notice that from now on, he would try to lighten up, as well as giving him the benefit of the doubt when necessary.
"We'll make sure to do some of all of those," he promised. "Anaything else you'd like to do? It's also been awhile since I've seen a show," Nikolias suggested.
Actually, with all the political turmoil in Taengea lately, Nakolias couldn't remember when the last time was that he'd actually let himself have any fun. Even when he did relax, he often preferred to do so in the woods, away from crowds and bustle.
But this was Nikos' night as much as his, and he was determined as much as possible to make sure they both had a good time.
That reminded him, he'd nearly forgotten about the part he usually liked the most any time he went anywhere.
"Where do you think the best taverna is?"

’Anything else you’d like to do? It’s also been awhile since I’ve seen a show.’
Nikos lifted his brows. ”Well then, we will most certainly have to see if there is a performance tonight. There is nothing quite like a good story being told. The artistry behind the words and the music and the staging. So intricate.” The younger lord held a certain amount of awe in his tone and his gaze, his admiration for the subject showing clearly. Nikos had always been a fan of the arts, could easily get drawn into the nuances of a play or a bardic song. Could lose hours looking at every detail of a grand painting. Nik shook his head slightly, refocusing his thoughts before he lost himself in reflection of some of the better pieces he’d seen of late. ”There are many things to do and to see in Argothia. Almost too much. There is no need to plan everything, Father. The gods will be our guides on this adventure.” A sly smile lifted one corner of his mouth at the thought of the many joys to be found in the province of Argothia. This was Nikos’ attitude nearly every time he set out to have fun in the night. Dionysus led him to the best drink and drugs, Aphrodite guided him to the arms of a lover – sometimes new, sometimes familiar, Athena showed him the way to find and enjoy the wonderous arts, and Hermes guided his hand at the many gambling games – sometimes for the better, sometimes not. But Nikos’ always had faith that he was in good hands when letting the gods lead the way.
’Where do you think the best taverna is?’
That sly smile turned simply wicked, in a good way, in a way that showed he was rather glad the question had been asked. ”There is a wonderful place that boasts to have the best mead in Argothia. Honestly, I would have to agree, for the flavors are always different every time I visit and it’s a wonderful change of pace from even our rich wines. The honeyed mead is my favorite.” He paused here and smiled wider, that charming grin showing his teeth in the dimming light of day. ”And the absolute best part, is I nearly always win the tables there,” he laughed warmly. ”You will enjoy it, I think. We’ll go there first.” he promised his father. He wanted nothing more than to help his father find a bit of fun and actually relax this night. A good flagon of mead would do that quite nicely, as it was much stronger than the usual wines he’d noticed that his father preferred.
It wasn’t long after this that the sounds outside the carriage began to change as they neared their destination. The carriage would drop them on the outskirts of the main night life of the province as was Nikos’ custom when coming here. ”Last chance to change your mind, my lord.” Nikos piped up with a teasing glint in his blue eyes.

"My mind is already made up," Nikolias said with a grin. The night life of Argothia was something he hadn't seen in awhile, and although he usually preferred to be alone after an intense court session, tonight was different. Tonight, he needed this, not only for his own sanity, but for the reparation of his and his son's relationship. As exhausting as things had been politically lately, he couldn't help hoping for more opportunities to do things like this.
"Now, what would you suggest I order?" he asked. "Perhaps you can tell me your favorite meals and brews." The stress that usually kept his stomach in knots lately had loosened up somewhat, and for the first time in what seemed to be ages, he was hungry, as opposed to eating because it was something to do to pass time he didn't want to spend talking.
"What kind of flavors are always different?" he asked curiously. Honestly, he loved good food as much as he loved hiking or hunting, or as much as Nikos seemed to love art. He just hadn't felt hungry lately because of political stress."You probably know I enjoy a well-prepared meal as much as anyone, but there are things going on at the moment that have probably interfered with my eating more than I would have liked. For all I know, the stress could have made me ill as much as anything else," he guessed, referring to his recent sickness and recovery.
But tonight, that was all in the past. While Nikolias was generally more introverted than most nobles might profess to be, he had a sense that this night would perhaps give him something he'd been missing. Not just relaxation, but the ease of relaxation, too.

’My mind is already made up.’
Nik smirked, nodding his head. ”Excellent,” he said for about the third time that night. Seemed that was going to a theme word of the night. Honestly, he was impressed his father hadn’t turned tail and ran back to the quiet of their Vasiliadon home. He brought his hands together and fingers the stone of the ring the elder Condos had given him. Perhaps there was indeed more to his father than Nikos had thought. ”Right. Follow me.” Nik turned and let the way through the streets of Argothia towards his favored establishment of the province’s nightlife district.
Nikolias began firing questions as they strolled down the cobblestones. Nik had to laugh. He’d never seen this side of his father before - the man had always seemed agitated or annoyed whenever Nik tried to engage for as long as Nikos could remember. Yet Nik had always looked up to his father, despite feeling rebuffed for his want of the crown. But now… they were one step closer to that crown, and it seemed that his father’s attitude was changing. Stephanos was gone, removed from succession. Irakles was king. Still a long way to go before the Condos family could reclaim what should have been theirs all along. But nothing worth doing was ever easy, was it? No. These things took time.
Nik opened the door to their destination as he approached it, holding it open for his father. ”It would seem that they can make mead out of just about anything. Honey. Fruit. Even peppers! It’s wonderful. And strong. You’ll be seeing double in no time.” He followed Nikolias inside and rubbed his hands together before placing one on the other man’s shoulder. ”The lambchops are amazing here as well. I get them all the time. They usually have crab or some other seafood as well. But I wouldn’t trust it. Usually sits too long and has made me ill a few times.” As Nik lead the way to an open dining table, he briefly wondered what his mother and sister would be doing at home while the men were out gambling. Had his father told his mother what they would be doing, where they were going? Ah. No matter.
The thoughts vanished as a woman came over bearing a bottle of mead and two goblets. ’The usual I presume?’ the woman asked in an almost bored tone. ”Yes. And uh...we’ll be buying into a game later. Make sure there are spots for us for a game of dice.” Nik pulled out a coin purse and handed it to the girl. When she was gone Nik proceeded to pour the mead into the provided wooden goblets. ”They’ll bring the food soon. Drink up.” he said, sliding one of the goblets across the table to Nikolias.

"Peppers?" Nikolias couldn't help but be curious, and eager to try that drink, but he did have a serious question before taking the plunge. "Wouldn't that be hot, though? I mean, wouldn't it burn on one's tongue? Still, I can't help finding the concept intriguing. Perhaps I'll try it- just a bit, for starters, though." He had to laugh heartily at the idea that he might see double soon. "Tonight, that's a pleasant enough thought." he admitted. Not least because the idea that he might see two images at once of his son somehow brought him happiness. He smiled and proposed a challenge. "Last one drunk beyond sense is a rotten egg!" He hadn't felt this good- almost boyish, really- in an extremely long time, or so it seemed. "Perhaps court makes me too serious, as a rule," he mused. After they had received their drinks and Nikolias had ordered lamb chops, heeding his son's warning about the seafood, especially as he'd been so ill recently, he drank heartily, even if he still felt a bit of caution when it came to tasting the pepper wine. It wasn't bad, just different from what he was used to, though he had to wonder how they made it.
Come to think of it, it wasn't good for someone to be so drunk he couldn't play a game properly- but tonight he was here for relaxation in general as well as for bonding time with his son. He only hoped he would still be able to stand up when this night was through. Unless the gaming tables were full of spaces to sit down, he'd be in a world of trouble.

’Last one drunk beyond sense is a rotten egg!’
Nikos laughed, lifting his goblet. ”Challenge accept, my lord. Though I much think that you will win that race, as I drink much more and more often than you do.” With that, Nik took a long drink of the honeyed mead they had been brought. He also called for a bottle of the pepper mead. Mead was something far different than wine, especially the sweet wines House Condos tended to turn out. Mead somehow held a higher alcohol content, making it easier to get drunk faster, often before the drinker realized they’d had a bit too much.
’Perhaps court makes me too serious, as a rule.’
Nikos didn’t respond to this, as it didn’t seem like a good idea to voice his own thoughts on the matter. Nik felt his father was too serious most of the time, even when not having to deal with courtly responsibilities. Nikos trusted in the gods to guide and inspire him along his journey in life, where Nikolias tended to fret and worry about everything. That was no way to live, in Nik’s opinion.
The pair of Condos lords ate and drank heartily. It was a refreshing change of pace to their usual arguments. Nik almost felt like his father was an actual friend as they chatted about anything and everything, making jokes and carrying on. Before long, the food had all been eaten and the mead was nearly gone, though Nikolias had surely had more to drink than the younger baron. ”I think it’s time to play some games. The dice are calling our names!”, Nikos declared, rather loudly. He stood with a laugh and helped his drunken father to his feet before leading the way to the back of the room and through a door to where the gambling took place.
This room, separated from the area where people ate and drank, was much louder by comparison. Many people gathered around tables of dice games and card games. There were even some men arm wrestling – sweating and grunting as their comrades cheered them on to pin the other’s arm to the table. Nikos lead the way to his favorite dice table and sat down in one of the two empty chairs, motioning for Nikolias to join him.
