The dark gelding was keeping an even pace across the rocky ground that led up to the province of Elimea, although he was snorting now -- letting his rider know his displeasure at being asked to do so much work. He was accustomed to such things, but Zosi always found it amusing that he complained so much about his job. She leaned down to pat his neck, using her nails to scratch before leaning back into the saddle with a sigh. The trip to Elimea was always the worst part of the whole thing, given it’s distance from Molossia. However, the destination was entirely worth it and any chance she was given to enjoy the hot springs, she was going to take.
”I might just drink.” She announced suddenly, turning to look at her companion -- the blonde lieutenant Phadera of Molossia. The darker skinned woman flashed her commanding officer a grin, something that was usually kept well hidden under lock and key. This year had certainly not been something to smile about. It was arguably the worst year that she’d had since her brother had disappeared. Phaedra did not know about it yet, but if Zosime drank -- she just might become well acquainted with the darkest parts of her mind.
She wouldn’t want to share it. No, she wanted that part of her life to die quickly and be buried, but it would take time to heal from the hurt that had pierced her soul. But alcohol had a way of loosening the archer’s tongue far more than it should, and she would bare her soul to anyone who would listen. Which was why she didn’t drink. And Phaedra would know that. ”It’s just the two of us, and I trust you with my life.” She said, giving a shrug. It was true. She trusted Phaedra to keep her alive while she was on the battlefield, and the woman basically knew everything about her anyway. It was like that, when you spent so much time together. Sure there were still levels of separation, but she and Phaedra had been on the same battlefields in Egypt.
They had nursed each other's wounds, watched each other's backs.
Her attention turned forward as the town had started to come into view, and she let the smile fade in order to preserve her tough image. It was difficult to be a female militant as it were. She had no desire to be seen as weak as they rolled into town. Elimea was a quaint town, not too big nor too small these days. They had once been a silver mining town, but once the silver had run dry and the hot springs had become something of a destination for outsiders -- well, they had seen the opportunity to save their slowly dying town and seized it. Good for them.
Zosime pulled lightly on the reins, glancing at Phaedra again. ”Anything you want to stop for before we head further up?” She asked. They’d brought supplies for a few days, but there was always something else that they could use. ”The spring I want to try is inside of a cave, and a bit further than the usual places.” Zosi said, brushing her long braid off her shoulder so that it swung down her back. She was close to cutting it off, finding the thing to be in her way more often than not. ”Supposedly, because it’s inside the cave -- it’s hotter than most.” She said, inclining her head in the direction that they would be going.

Timaeus did not often get a chance to escape the confines of Eubocris anymore given the nature of his work, but every now and then the Baron's brother would get lucky. This had been one of those times when Nico encouraged the younger Valaoritis to take a few days off. Even though this seemed like a gesture of good will done out of the goodness of Nico's heart, Timaeus knew that there was another reason why his brother wanted to make sure that the boy let go of the reigns for more than an afternoon. The stress of the position was getting to him. Even the most emotionally sound of men would struggle to lead a unit on the best of days and Tim just wasn't that. He had gone from sailing the world, only needing to care for himself to needing to look after the well being of hundreds of men. It was rather jarring to his system and that simple explanation as to why Tim needed a break was only about half of the reason why Tim was seeming to be more akin to a loose cannon every single day. He had come back after four years to learn that his father had died. This meant that the boy had not seen the man who had sired him since he was sixteen and he was now much older than that.
Timaeus didn't like to admit it, but the death of his father bit at him immensely. There was no way to convey how deep his shame and regret was for not coming home sooner. Had he done so, maybe he could have had a chance to say goodbye and have a sense of closure that the open seas had stolen from him... no, that Tim had stolen from himself. He had countless opportunities to return and he took none of them. Now he could not lay the blame on anyone else, but his own miserable self. This ate away at him constantly and there was very little he could do to numb the pain besides the soothing relief that alcohol provided. No one knew that Timaeus was quickly turning to the bottle to numb his pain and that was how it was going to stay if he had a say in it.
Even though his habit had been kept under wraps, the toll had not. Now he was a bit snappier with everyone. It was easy to hide in the unit as he was expected to be tough as nails there, but at home? That was a whole other issue. Tim had had one too many disagreements with his family to be blind to the toll everything was taking. He clearly needed to get away for a few days and at this point the Valaoritis were more than happy to oblige.
Timaeus might have had a short list of the various places he wanted to go on this extended break, but given that they were all outside Colchis the Lord had to settle for the province of Elimea. It was the practical choice that also satsified Tim's desire to travel given the distance from the central province of Eubocris. Nico had also lauded praises upon the hot springs, claiming that Tim would come back a completely different man after having a few days to soak in the warm waters. The younger man had been inclined to his eyes at his brother's proclaimations, now that he was here, he had to admit that his brother had a point. Sinking into the hot baths, letting the water crawl past his shoulders and up his neck, the young man could feel the tension that had been boiling up in him melt away. He didn't think it was possible, but the proof was staring him right in the face.
At the moment, the Captain was alone so he held no shame about releasing a deep sigh as he leaned his head back. The noise echoed off the cave walls, which in a way was a funny sort of noise as his own noise of contentment was amplified. If Tim wasn't so absorbed in his own relief, he might have laughed at it. Why not? No one could hear him. There was no one to judge the man.
Reaching out of the pool for a moment to take his pile of clothes laying discarded nearby, the Valaoritis made a makeshift pillow for his head to rest on as he leaned back. Once he was happy for the placement, he allowed his eyes to slip closed, fully drinking in the relaxing qualities of the hot springs, completely unaware that he was soon about to have some rather mixed company in the form of his Drakos comrades who were also on their way to the baths...
Who knew what lietenant and her best soldier would think of finding another high ranking soldier in the same baths as them?

often that Phaedra got time off. In fact, it was a sensation that she was finding quite difficult to become accustomed to. Zosi had been the one who had talked her into this, to take a break for once, perhaps she was right that Phaedra needed to relax. Or perhaps it was incredibly irresponsible to leave her entire unit in the hands of a woman who hadn’t even been in the army during the last war with Egypt. Phaedra still wasn’t sure which was true yet. Still, Zosi had said that this would all be worth it, and she trusted her opinion. The ride to Elimea had been a long one, but as far as Phaedra was concerned, it could have been worse. It could have been a march to Elimea. Luckily she had Zosi to keep her company.
Phaedra raised an eyebrow at her declaration that she might drink. “That’s dangerous,” she responded simply. Zosi and drink did not combine particularly well in her experience. Though they weren’t currently on duty, therefore Phaedra wasn’t going to judge her for wanting to indulge. The points she followed up with made a lot of sense to Phaedra. There was nothing for Zosi to fear when it was just the two of them together. They had been friends for a long time. Since before Phaedra had decided that making friends when in such a highly dangerous profession was a bad idea.
They reined the horses in a bit as the city came into view. Phaedra frowned a bit as Zosi suggested that they stop in the town for extra supplies. If she was going to be forced to relax, she was ready to just hurry up and relax already. “We should have everything we need already.” Phaedra was nothing if not prepared. There didn’t need to be any delays. Besides, somewhere secluded would offer the best opportunity for some peace and quiet. Or at least, that was what made sense anyway. Honestly, the chance to explore a cave seemed like the most interesting thing about this entire adventure. “A nice hot cave sounds very relaxing. I don’t mind a bit of a walk, or climb if that’s what it takes, to get there.”
The horses however, might. The way that Zosi had indicated looked too steep and uneven for their horses, so it would be on foot from here. Phaedra dismounted her horse and went to hobble its two front legs. As much as her horse had been trained to wait for her, the hobbles would make sure that the horse wouldn’t get too far away before they returned. There was grass enough nearby, the horse should be fine while they were up in the cave. Then Phaedra took the saddle bag full of supplies for the trip. She turned back to Zosi. “Since I don’t know where we’re going, I’ll let you lead the way.” Phaedra gestured up the path that Zosi had indicated earlier, waiting until she started up the trail to follow her.

Her expression was wry when Phaedra only urged them onward, to the springs. She had no illusions about her commanding officer. She was a stiff, formal woman -- not accustomed to taking things easy or slow. So she said nothing, instead urging the horse onward until they had reached the place where they had to leave the horses behind. She took her bag of supplies from the horse’s saddle, and slung it over her back -- giving Phaedra only a nod.
She stayed quiet until they reached the place where the cave opened up, leading them inside with a sigh of relief as the already warmer air began to dampen her skin. Already she could feel her shoulders dropping, the tight tension across her shoulders ebbing away into the warmth. Her feet found the floor of the cave to mostly be smooth, with a slight grit. It seemed that they weren’t the only ones to know of this place. She turned back to Phaedra with a grin, adjusting the weight of the bag on her back.
She moved into the cave until she was comfortable with the level of light still left, that which would make her shadow, and then began to pull off her clothes. If she was going to relax, then she was going to do it right. Sitting in wet clothes was no fun, and she was sure Phaedra had seen enough of her over the years that it would not matter to the commander.
”Hurry up, Phae or I’m going to throw you in myself.” The soldier said candidly, all but chucking her clothes across the cavern. She had not even noticed the man that was soaking in the same bath, her eyes not quite adjusted to the darkness just yet. She laughed, a girlish sound for someone so brash and unstereotypical of her fair sex, before setting her foot into the first part of the pool. ”If I wasn’t scared to end up impaled on a rock, I’d just jump in right now.” She said, edging further into the water. She let out a small sound of delight as the water skidded up to her ankles and then her knees, lapping higher and higher.
It was only then that her senses seemed to kick in, a slight sound -- a ripple in the water, or a rock skittering…something caught her attention. Her gaze narrowed, and she stood naked from the waist up, glaring into the darkness. ”If someone else is here, you best announce yourself before I drown you myself.” She hissed, her tone sharp as it echoed off the walls.

Phaedra followed Zosime up the steep and narrow path to what she claimed would be a relaxing and private hot springs. Phaedra had her doubts that they needed to go through so much effort just to find somewhere to be able to relax, but she trusted Zosi with her life. She might as well trust her with something as simple as a vacation. At the very least the hike would be good exercise.
The air in the cave was warm and humid. Definitely indicative of a hot spring inside. It was hard to see very far into the cave, and that made Phaedra somewhat uneasy. She didn’t especially like going into places where she couldn’t see. As they walked in, Phaedra’s eyes began to adjust, and she could see a nice place to put down her pack and just a little further on, there was the edge of the pool.
Phaedra took a moment taking her pack of stuff and trying to arrange it so that it would still be convenient for her to access once she was wet. She wanted to have to get back out of the water as little as possible. The water would be warm, but she knew on the other hand that that meant that it would feel all the colder should she have to leave the water. She’d want to make sure that they had the wine and food to hand without having to leave the relaxing presence of the water.
Phaedra laughed a bit at Zosi’s urging to go ahead and get in the water.“I’m just making sure I have everything in order before we get in the water. Then I can finally relax.” Phaedra checked their supplies one more time, making sure the food, wine, and a towel for when she emerged from the water were all within reach of the water’s edge. She had just untied the rope belting her peplos and was reaching for the fibulae to unpin the shoulder of her garment when she heard Zosi’s raised voice yelling at someone in the darkness.
Instinctively, Phaedra reached for her knife, silently cursing herself that she hadn’t thought to put that item closer to the water. It was a rookie mistake to assume that somewhere was safe just because it was comfortable. She peered into the darkness, trying to make out the form of who, or whatever it was hiding in the darkness. “We’re armed,” Phaedra added to Zosi’s declaration. “So if you try anything you are dead.” She knew many people would underestimate two women traveling alone, but they were soldiers, alone they had a good chance of taking on any untrained man, together, they would be no match for even one soldier.

While the military officer and her second in command made their way into the caves, Timaeus was starting to understand why his brother had been so quick to laud praises onto the springs. As the warm mineral-rich water soaked into his skin, the military camp could practically feel it drawing all the aches and pains that had built up during the short period he had been back in Colchis. Honestly, Timaeus had not known that he had been so tense in the first place until he had the warm, bubbling waters to force a relaxed state upon him. It was a strange sensation for him, realizing how worked up he had been and feeling it all floating away. As cliche as it may sound, Timaeus could have sworn that the last time he had felt like this was when he had been out on the open seas with Adrestus and Sokari. Back then he had no worries, no real concerns -- or at least ones that paled in comparison to the ones he faced today with his duties regarding the Men of the Heights and assisting his brother in his own role as the Baron.
He had never stopped to actually consider how jarring of a transition that had truly been. After all, Timaeus was not very good with dealing with the past (as evidenced by his drinking problem) and as much as he missed his life out at sea; the young military officer had subconsciously recognized that pining for a life that was now lost to him was not healthy for him. So, he had shut a large part of that out. He had forgotten what it felt like to not have to worry about keeping new recruits in line or finding a place in the budget for new weapons. Maybe when he got back to Eubocris, he should try to find things like this that could help him unwind and not have to walk around with a heavy ball of stress weighing him down so heavily. After all, clearly, his own method of drinking himself out of his misery when the doors were closed at night was not exactly working as well as he thought that it did.
However, Timaeus was quick to chase these thoughts away. Thinking about the future seemed to be too taxing when this lovely paradise was right in front of him. Leaning his head back on his makeshift pillow made of his crumpled clothes, the Captain sunk lower into the water, allowing the almost saline-smelling water lap gently around the base of his neck. As the cave was fairly dark, having only been lit by the smattering of burning braziers on the wall, most of his body was obscured beneath the inky black waters. (That was, of course, save for the general outline of his body.) Perhaps more could have been easily seen if the dim lighting had been burning just a smidge brighter, but ultimately this was going to be for the best as Timaeus’s newest companions in this unique bathhouse arrived.
The nobleman from Eubocris scowled slightly at the sheer amount of noise that they were making -- which really wasn’t a lot, truth be told. However, their innocent chatter seemed to be almost deafening amid the previous silence of the cavern. Before the two of them had arrived, Tim could have heard the gentle droplets of water fall down from forming stalactites against the floor of the cave or the occasional groan from a shifting rock. But that was now lost as the two women chatting about not wishing to be impaled and having half the mind to toss the other in. Even though Timaeus was a little less than pleased to have the serenity of the moment disrupted, he wasn’t really showing his annoyance openly beyond the odd glare through the darkness.
Even though he had been in the cavern longer than the two of them, his utterly relaxed state and sleepy eyes had made it difficult to properly adjust to the darkness of the cave. He could see two dark blobs moving about on the other side of the pool, but there was little else that he could make out beyond that. The foreign features of the second-in-command and the warrior-like physique of the lieutenant were almost impossible to make out in the darkness. However, he could make out the general movements that came with the two of them undressing -- but that was more from the rustling of fabric than anything that his eyes were picking upon. Now he would be a liar if he tried to convince himself that he didn’t perk up a little bit when he realized what was happening across the pool, but the Valaoritis lord was not stupid enough to try and gawk at the two of them across the pool. This, after all, was nothing like the last time he had found himself in the company of a bare lady in a bathhouse. That had been in Egypt where the rules regarding modesty were far laxer than the customs Timaeus had grown up in Egypt. He was more than well aware of this simple truth which was why even though his blood was running hot as a primal part of him dared to dream of some sort of repeat of his run-in with Nia, he had the common sense to pointedly look up at the ceiling as they rushed to get in the water.
Timaeus didn’t announce his presence during those few brief moments that the two Molossian soldiers remained unaware of there being a third person with them. He saw no reason to do so, after all. He was minding his own business on the other side of the pool from them. As the two of them had not gone through the effort to make sure that they were alone before they first started to strip, Tim could only assume that they were not overly concerned with being seen by others -- so there was no reason for him to speak up for the sake of their own modesty. Plus there was the simple fact that Timaeus really didn’t want to engage in any sort of small talk at this moment. The warm waters were doing a fantastic job of luring him to sleep and if these women were intent on keeping to themselves, Timaeus was not going to intrude just for the sake of a moment of brief flirting. It was just far easier to keep to his own as far as he was concerned.
However, it seemed to be that the two ladies across the way had not immediately begun to strip out of a lack of concern for modesty, but the foolish assumption that they were alone. Which, of course, they learned was wrong just as soon as Timaeus shifted back to lean on the pile of clothes behind him, setting off ripples of water that could not have been formed by water dripping into the pool from some cave fixture high above him. Instead of ignoring him like Timaeus assumed that they would, the military Captain was soon being met with a barrage of threats to reveal himself under the threat that he would be skewered by the weapons that they had brought if he remained silent.
Sitting up at the rapid change in atmosphere from one that was relaxing to tense, Timaeus squinted through the darkness at the two women, unsure of what to make of these words. Was he worried about being sliced by two women or drowned in the waters? In the simplest terms, no he was not. Granted, this stemmed from the assumption he held that these women were not also soldiers like him, but instead were sisters or something to that nature. If things turned hairy, Timaeus was fairly confident that his military training would tip any scuffle into his favor despite the fact that it would be two versus one. Not that it was going to get to that point anyways. Timaeus had come to the caverns of Eilmea to relax, not fight.
“Bold of you to assume that I am not armed as well.” He muttered with a light laugh dancing in the corner of his lips. The lord’s words were more to himself than anything else, but the sheer echoing nature of the cavern walls carried his words over to the women anyway. Scooting himself up in the water, Timaeus revealed his bare upper half as he swung his arms back onto the ledge, leaning onto it as he attempted to placate the girls into thinking that he really wasn’t that much of a threat. Though if he thought that his decision to remain on the dark side of the cave while talking about nearby he had discarded a sword was a good attempt at setting the two women at ease… Well, he was clearly going to have to work on his people skills, wasn’t he?
As he focused on the blobs across the pool, he could begin to notice more details that he hadn’t before. Like the light color surrounding the woman who was not yet in the pool -- probably the fabric of a dress, she had yet to take off. However, it wasn’t enough to make out the fact that the woman in the water was currently wearing nothing on her upper torso. It was for the best really that Timaeus couldn’t see this sort of thing. He might have been forced to grow and mature when he had to take up the mantle of responsibility with his military position, the mere sight of a woman undressed might start a fervor in him that would be hard to quench in any sort of modest way.
“Timaeus,” He quickly supplied, not wanting his words to be taken as a threat of his own towards them, “I would come over to you two for a proper introduction, but I’m guessing we’re all not in the proper state for that.” A light chuckle escaped him as he explained why he was not going to jump out of the pool and race over to say hello. He could not say for certain what kind of state that the two of them were in, but Timaeus was completely bare and he did not want to have to deal with how these two women might react if they happened to catch a glimpse of his unclothed form. After all, his silence had already earned him threats of death. If they were going to take this route to preserve their modesty then Timaeus was not going to move. Not until he was certain that the threats of drowning and skewering him were not going to be acted upon in the time it would take to pull back on his military tunic.
However, that didn’t mean that Timaeus was not going to act the part of a gentleman like good noble lords like himself were supposed to do and offer some sort of reassurance that he had not technically seen anything that was out of line. “If it’s any consolation, I can’t see either of you.” He doubted that it would do him any good, truth be told, but at least if they decided that the crime of being in a public bathhouse first was something worthy of death, the gods would at least know that he had been honest with him not violating their modesty. Granted… if they decided to follow through anyway, that illusion of not seeing anything would likely be ruined.
Though, then again, would being strangled by two naked women in a bathhouse really be the worst method of reaching Hades? Tim thought that it wouldn’t be that bad of an exit, but he wasn’t exactly going to goad them into that either. Or at least he was hoping to not do that. It could very well be that they were not happy with his introduction. If this was the case, well, Timaeus would be in a rather tricky situation.
But that all depended on what Zosi and Phaedra thought of their new bathing companion didn’t it?

Maybe there was a flicker of fear, or perhaps -- more accurately, uncertainty, as a male voice came back through the steamy darkness. Her spine stiffened, straightening her posture further. Yes, she was naked but had she ever had modesty? Perhaps when she was a child, a girl instead of a woman. Her hand skimmed the surface of the water, the warmth trickling through her fingers before balling into a fist as a shadow rippled in the water. He moved, and her eyes had adjusted enough to see that at least. She was not sure if he was alone, but if he was then it was two against one, if things went that way.
It wasn’t as if she and Phaedra were entirely defenseless with their combined years of military training.
”Bold is a word used to describe me often. You having a weapon is of no consequence to me.” Zosi said, letting her voice carry without much volume. There was no need for it, not with the cave as enclosed as it was. She wanted to glance at Phaedra, see what the commander wanted to do -- but there was no way that she was going to give her back to an undetermined threat. Zosime hated surprises, even ones that probably shouldn’t have been surprises. It wasn’t unreasonable to assume that they were not the only ones who knew about this place-- obviously. She’d heard of it from someone else, so it was obvious that they might not be the only ones.
Zosi rolled her shoulders, deciding to dismiss the threat -- although not entirely. She sank down into the warm water until it covered her up again, stopping just below her collarbone. She wasn’t sure how much relaxing she was going to get done now that she knew there was a man here. Yet, her stubborn pride was not going to let her leave either.
”I don’t give a damn what you can or can’t see, Timaeus.” She said, wading her way back through the warm water to the edge where Phaedra had been. She was not about to trust someone that she couldn’t see, someone that had not announced themselves before there had been a need for threats. She had not been particularly quiet coming into the cave, so it was odd that he hadn’t seen a need to announce himself sooner. Like he was hiding something, or being a pervert.
”Come on, Phaedra.” She said, beckoning to the commander. ”So long as our friend stays over there, it should be fine.”

This was typical. Phaedra had finally been forced to relax and do something fun for a while and there was already some complication. Luckily, Phaedra wasn’t disappointed. She was used to this sort of thing. It seemed nothing ever truly went to plan in her life. That was why she was always on alert for any sign of trouble. This man who had not thought to announce himself as two woman began to undress in front of them was just one such bit of trouble, and it made her glad she always brought a weapon with her everywhere.
However, The man seemed entirely unconcerned with the threat of violence, claiming himself to be armed as well. Still, it would be easy enough for the two of them to defeat one man if it came to that. He, however, seemed entirely disinclined to fight them, which Phaedra certainly appreciated. She was supposed to be relaxing after all, whatever that meant. Zosi, as always, spoke the words that she merely thought. Whether or not he was armed they would easily be able to take him.
While his flippant attitude towards her threat annoyed her, at least the man had the decency to introduce himself. Phaedra resheathed her knife, crossing her arms across her own chest. “Lieutenant Phaedra of Molossia,” she introduced herself, hoping her title might lend a little credence to her threats that would be dangerous if he tried anything. Phaedra glanced over at Zosi, who showed no indication of offering an introduction. “This is my second, Zosime,” she added. It was only polite that they all knew each other's names.
The man however, seemed to think that it was perfectly acceptable that they might share the baths together. Still, Zosi seemed insistent that they would still find a way to enjoy themselves. If he wasn’t leaving, like hell was she going to undress in front of him despite whatever he might claim to be able to see or not see. Phaedra began wading into the warm water, chiton still firmly on when she felt a low deep rumble. She heard a few rocks fall from the ceiling, splashing into the pools below.
Phaedra’s eyes went wide. This was a bad sign, it wasn’t a coincidence that the moment she had entered the water the ground had shook. She wasn’t about to risk displeasing the gods. “Come on Zosi, we’re leaving now.” It only took a few steps before she was out of the pool, quickly stuffing her belongings back into her sack. No good could come of this. The ground continued to shake, only growing stronger. She had finally gotten all of her things ready to leave when there was a large crack, and clattering of stone. The cave suddenly went dark. As Phaedra looked up towards the exit she saw what had happened. The mouth of the cave was now completely blocked with...well she couldn’t see in the dark, but she assumed there were now rocks blocking the entrance to the cave.
She had always expected that she’d meet her end at the hands of some Egyptian or a Northerner. That she might meet her end here, stuck in a cave with a strange man, having done something to displease the gods, that was not something she had ever prepared herself for. Neither an earthquake nor a rockslide were something she could fight, nor was the will of the gods something she could subvert. For the first time in a long time, Phaedra was well and truely scared.

The other women might not have been overly fond of the banter that Timaeus presented, he certainly was preening on the other side of the warm, springwater basin. After all, their threatening words felt hollow to the man who led an entire military unit back home. There was no way that these two women could hurt him -- but that line of thought quickly changed when the two of them decided to return his introduction by giving him their names.
They might not have known it right away, but Timaeus felt his blood run cold at the mention of who these mystery women were.
He was fairly certain that he actually knew the two women across the water from him. If his memory wasn’t deceiving him, these mysterious ladies were the same Phaedra and Zosime who had answered Prince Vangelis’s call to hunt down the rabid bear in Lyncaea all those years ago. Granted, their interactions in that Quest which had ended in a rather odd fashion as they had done most of the fighting underground, of all places, but that was still the sort of thing that one did not forget. There was no need for such hostility when they had once fought side by side. Granted, this had been years ago and Timaeus himself had been a boy barely grown, so he wasn’t all that surprised that they hadn’t recognized each other right away. Especially as Timaeus wasn’t exactly that sixteen-year-old right royal prick anymore… or at least he could hope that he had grown up a bit in the past few years.
“Wait. Did I hear you right? You said your names were Phaedra and Zosime right?” He sputtered back, almost in disbelief that this was the place that the old comrades were going to be reunited. Timaeus had thought that if they were going to meet back up it would be at some sort of war meeting if anywhere -- not naked in the baths of Elimea. “It’s me, Timaeus. From the bear hunt?” His voice conveyed the shock that he was feeling at this moment, completely dropping the arrogant air that came with feeling as if the threats of two ladies skewering him to death were nothing to be concerned about. Luckily, he had hopefully proved himself to be more friend than foe by recalling this memory as there was no doubt in his mind now that if these women were who they said they were, they would be more than capable of harming him. After all, he had seen how they had taken down those miners all those years ago and time surely would have only sharpened their skills.
Before either party really had much of a chance to react to the revelation that they weren’t all the strangers that they thought that they were -- the gods had decided that this was the perfect moment to interrupt. At that moment, a horrible earthquake seemingly ripped through the cavern, bringing forth a rumbling noise that was so loud that Timaeus thought he was going deaf from the sheer echo of it. His hands flew up to his ears, trying to shield them from the noise as the water of the baths began to slosh about, spilling over the edge as it rocked back and forth, moving in time to the earth’s shaking. Timaeus could feel small bits of dirt rain down, peppering his face as the stalactites above began to creak and groan, threatening to give way. The Valaoritis’s instincts screamed at the man to move out of the way, but fear kept him rooted to the spot. Even as one large stone structure came falling down from above the ragtag group of adventurers and fell into the pool with a loud splash. The ripples from this turned into mini waves, practically pulling Timaeus off of the ledge he had been resting against as another loud crash sounded from somewhere else in the cave, but the chaos around him was so great that he could not pinpoint where it was coming from. At least not until the earth grew still again and Timaeus felt that he could finally breathe once more.
Fully unaware of the situation that Phaedra had just discovered, Timaeus pulled himself out of the pool with a slight sputtering cough -- getting rid of the water that he had accidentally swallowed in the madness. After taking a moment to catch his breath, the Captain reached for his military tunic, quickly throwing it over his sopping wet body as he brushed the now plastered down wet curls away from his face. That was when he realized for the first time that the cave had grown suddenly darker and that the only light he could see was coming from the few sparse braziers lining the edge of the pool set there to keep any careless soul from falling in if they wandered too close to the edge. Not exactly sure what was going on, but knowing that he should probably make it to the other side of the baths where the other women were, Timaeus hurried over to the nearest one and plucked it off the wall. That way at least, his path to the other side wouldn’t end in him tripping and falling headfirst into the water.
Now that Timaeus was somewhat together, he called out to the others, hoping that this precious time he had used hadn’t been needed in saving one of them from drowning or being crushed under a rock or gods knew what else. “Are you two alright over there?” Given the emergency situation that was now on their hands, Timaeus figured that they could disregard the whole notion of all of them sticking to their own sides of the pool, leading Timaeus to try to make his way over to them, carefully stepping over piles of debris in the process. Even though he was far away from the discovery that Phaedra had made, Timaeus could tell what had happened by the time he reached the others. After all, it was not that hard to notice pitch blackness in the face where daylight had been just moments before -- especially when the hour was not late enough to warrant the lack of light.
“Oh Zeus, Rhea, and Kronos.” Timaeus murmured under his breath as he came to a stop behind the girls, staring at the wall of rocks with his mouth agape at the new situation they were now in. The three of them had been in tricky situations before, but good gods, this was different. Being trapped was an entirely different ballgame than fighting a couple of buff miners. The color drained from the Captain’s face when he realized the hopelessness of the situation. They could not move a rock wall on their own. Not without risking all the other stones coming down to crush them. Norr could they stay here forever. The cavern might be big as far as caves go, but even this had a limited air supply. What had started out as a simple relaxing day at the baths was quickly seeming like it was going to be the death of all of them. This cave had quickly become their tomb.
“Oh gods, there’s gotta be another way out.” Timaeus muttered as he looked behind them, a slight edge of panic rising in his voice, “There’s gotta be a crawlspace or something” It was a foolish task wishing that there was an emergency exit hidden somewhere just out of their immediate field of sight -- but what else was he supposed to think when he was facing proof that the gods wanted all of them dead by sealing them in like this. Really, was all of them being in the baths at once such a heinous crime that they should die for it? Call Timaeus biased, but this punishment seemed to be a little harsh for the supposed crime they had committed.
“Oh fuck, what are we going to do?” He murmured to himself as he looked to the other two women, hoping that someone in this strange group had some brilliant idea on how they were going to get out of this mess. Timaeus did not want to die here in the dark, choking as the air run out. There was no way he was going to let it end like this, but was there even anything that they could do to save themselves?

It was apparent that everything was already ruined, even before she’d made it back to the edge where she had stepped into the warm pool. The water swirled around her middle, rolling off the back of her shoulders which were tense. Phaedra was one of those rare individuals who needed coaxing to have fun, and she had no doubt in her mind that the woman was going to balk at the idea of spending even a minute in the hot spring when there was a presumably naked man somewhere in the dark. Zosi sighed, irritated by the fact that her trip to the hot springs was over before it’d even had a chance to truly begin. Life was so unfair.
She muttered a curse under her breath, mumbling something about stupid men and their impeccable timing when Phaedra had offered both of their names, perhaps hoping to cow the man with military titles and knowledge that these two women were not some kind of easy prey. Zosi could barely make Phaedra out in the dark, but she could tell that the woman was still wearing clothes for gods’ sake. Somehow she knew she’d never hear the end of this, knew that she’d never again get Phaedra to join her for something fun that could not be had in a tavern at the bottom of a strong drink.
“Wait. Did I hear you right? You said your names were Phaedra and Zosime right?” “It’s me, Timaeus. From the bear hunt?”
The bear hunt. She groaned at the mere memory of that little misadventure, something she thought better lost to the depths of her memory -- right there beside the ones of Egypt. Things better forgotten. ”Don’t speak of that…” She said, holding up a hand even though he couldn’t see it from across the pool. ”I’ve mostly managed to repress that particular adventure, thank you very much.” She wrinkled her nose at the memory of being trapped underground, as if that hadn’t been bad enough. She shuddered despite the warm water. Phaedra called her name, urging her out of the water. Oh good gods, had that been the final straw to scare her out of the water? Zosi was going to be absolutely sour the rest of the day if she didn’t get at least ten minutes in the water.
”I remember you just fine, Timaeus.” She lied. In fact, she hadn’t remembered him at all until he’d brought it up again. ”That still doesn’t…” Her words were cut off by a shake of the earth, the caramel-color skinned woman throwing her hands out in the water, stumbling until she found her footing again. She quickly made for the ledge, hauling herself up with unsteady legs as the earth continued to shake. Seven fucking hells.
She was naked when the rocks began to fall, reaching out to grab hold of Phaedra so that they wouldn’t get separated. It was a good thing they’d been friends for so long, or this would have been painfully awkward or at least that was what Zosi thought. She was completely unphased by Phaedra in any state of dress, coming from years upon years of working and fighting side by side. Surprisingly nothing particularly romantic had ever happened between them, despite rumors to the contrary. It wasn’t that Zosi didn’t find her attractive, but it was almost like they were siblings even though they were so very different in appearance.
”@zeus is a goat-fucking whore.” She swore under her breath, as the tremors stopped -- and the light, however faint it had been, was gone as well. She let go of the lieutenant, searching the ground for her own clothes. ”Damn it all to hell.” And those words were followed by an additional string of very colorful curses.
Are you two alright over there? Timaeus called, and she could hear him making his way across the debris to join them. Zosime threw her wet curls out of her face, straightening up just as she finished throwing on her clothing. She had no shame in her nakedness, but jagged rocks and skin didn’t mix. ”We’re fine. You sound fine too.” She rolled her eyes as she turned toward the mouth of the cave, starting towards it for a closer look. She wasn’t particularly worried just yet, though the awareness of being trapped was causing the hair on the back of her neck to raise. She grit her teeth as she kicked the rubble at the base of the pile,
The rising panic in Tim’s voice was not adding much to the situation, threatening to send her own hysteria into overdrive. ”We could try to dig our way out.” She offered, kicking another stray rock off into the darkness. It plopped into the pool with a splash. ”Might take a while, but it could be done.” It wouldn’t be fun, but it would be possible. ”We could also look for another way out, perhaps the springs run into the cave from somewhere else. Might have to swim for that, though.” Which made her stomach churn. Drowning was one of her worst fears, believe it or not. She was not a particularly strong swimmer, though she could hold her own for a short time.
”But what we shouldn’t do, is panic.”
