All day, she had been daydreaming about the king. It was distracting, especially when being careful not to indulge her secret to anyone else. It would ruin her. She would likely be thrown back to Cretheus in an instant and kept a widow for life. She’d be locked away where no one would see or hear of the lady ever again. And worse than that, if Olympia became too upset and lost the baby because of her actions - that could ruin a country. The blame of a baby was always put on the mother. She was incapable of carrying the wee one to term. But, Kat would feel guilty either way. But, that was only if she found out.
In the meantime, she felt not remorse for the King calling for her. He was passionate and there was just something that came over her when he was in the room. Especially with that debonair smile. Aikaterine could barely contain herself. It was strange. Whether it was some blessing or just being intriguing all on his own, she wasn’t planning on giving up Stephanos anytime soon. Not if she could help it.
Aikaterine was not the maid that stayed at Olympia’s bedside for the night. She had finished up her duties to the queen before being allowed to retire to get some sleep. They were already given the lengthy instructions on what to wear and how to do hair before they would be seeing the men off on their expedition. She had kept a straight face through it all. She knew how dangerous it was to be going after the Creed, especially with an uncle Stephanos plainly told Kat he didn’t trust.
In her hands were the chiton she was instructed to wear the next day and the rouge that she would have to figure out how to apply. How hard could it be to put on? However, she was still worried. Aikaterine felt horribly out of place in the city and with all these other ladies that had been exposed to such glamorous lives compared to her own. At least she knew it went on her lips, it was a good start.
Her daydreaming once again getting the best of her as she looked down one hall and then another. A long drawn out breath was pulled in as she looked at the pristine white walls one way and then another. She was lost. She had only really been at the palati for a little over a week. It was hardly enough time to get to know all the corridors the magnificent structure had to offer. She didn’t want to go back and bother the queen, even if she was able to figure out where she was. She was stuck. In a predicament and unsure what to do about it. She could just wait until some other servant went down the hall.
That was the plan. Aikaterine was far too demure to go peeking into rooms and finding someone, so she would wait. Her green eyes cast downward admiring the fabric that she was holding in her hand. It was the best she could do without allowing her mind to drift off thinking of the blue endless nature of King Stephanos eyes.

That morning had been met with another tidbit of information that Xene had been intent to hold onto. For putting some much needed sense into her brother, as a start. Settled at her writing desk, scanning through a few old missives and Zacharias' letters, the whisper had come to her ear as one of her servants shifted through her rooms behind her, cleaning up and straightening things as she went.
'King Stephanos was spotted with Queen Olympia's new lady. She was leaving his room in the early hours of this morning.'
Xene's gaze lifted from the papers in front of her, blue eyes glancing toward the window. "Her name?" she questioned lightly, glancing back down and getting back to her work.
'Aikaterine of Maganea.'
The princess gave no indication that she had heard the name and the servant promptly went back to her duties, moving about the room like a silent little snake, making absolutely no sound on the stone floor save for the shifting and tidying of items. Content with the work done on her next musical piece, Xene calmly pressed back from the desk and to her feet. The vivid emeral chiton she wore trailed along the stone, something silvery woven into the fabric. The gown hugged her in all of the right places and was only completed with her golden hair piled in plaits atop her head.
The woman wandered her rooms for a while longer, met with her brother in the afternoon, and even went out to converse with the ladies of the court throughout the day. However, with the sun starting to set low into the sky, she trailed back to her rooms, her guards, annoying as they were, trailing as far back as they would allow. It was on her way back to her rooms that she spotted one of the palace ladies standing in the middle of the corridor looking completely lost and maybe even a little airy in temperament.
Approaching her, Xene realized she was the same lady that had only entered the Queen's service maybe a week or more before. Mind flashing back to the information given to her that morning, Xene found herself giving pause. Blue eyes just the slightest bit cold and searching, Xene started forward once more. Aikaterine wouldn't find the endless blues of King Stephanos, but she would find the bright, stormy seas of his sister.
"You," Xene said with a hint of venom in her voice. "You look lost, Aikaterine," Xene commented, her hands settled patiently in front of her. She'd take her time with the woman, extracting information and figuring out exactly what she needed to store away for later. "Might I help?" she questioned, deigning to be somewhat helpful in the process. For now, at least.

She had thought that she had been careful. However, Aikaterine had fallen asleep at the worst possible moment. Being found out so early into the affair and while the queen was still pregnant was dangerous. Actually, she thought her stealthy exit had been good. She hadn't the slightest clue that someone had gone and told the princess. Course, she had been so naive when it came to all the courtly gossip. Kat was used to being at her home with only her sister-in-law to discuss things of the nearby village. Nothing exciting ever happened.
The tone was not lost on her. She froze in an instant as she heard the princess speak with a bite. Kat was not exactly sure what she had done to cross Xene, however, it was easy to assume it had something to do with Stephanos. Whether it was stableboys who spoke of the race that first day they met or any meeting since then found out by the walls that were always watching. She couldn't be sure. Or perhaps the princess just merely loathed everyone just for existing. The brunette knew nothing about Xene of Mikaelidas, besides the fact that she was Stephanos' little sister.
"Indeed, your highness. Quite lost." She admitted as her eyes searched the walls that were around her for something that she might recognize. The King was with the Queen and that was probably known, so at least she wouldn't have to worry about anyone thinking she was up to no good. Her fingers tightened around the clothes for the next day as her green eyes focused back on the other. "That would be most kind of you, I'd be so grateful."
She didn't think she had to tell the woman where she stayed. Aikaterine was wherever the other ladies were housed. Just a little above that of the servants. In her position, she still retained the fact that she was indeed a lady - even if not from a royal house or important one. They were the richest in Meganea at least. When the princess moved, Kat followed. She was obedient to a flaw. Eyes watched the hallways they passed so that she would be able to find her way. Eventually, she would get better at this - she hoped.
Her submissiveness dictated that she didn't even speak more than when she was spoken to, especially when it came to royalty.

"Did no one give you a proper tour?" Xene asked lightly, shifting from one foot to the other. Her gaze didn't leave the woman's form, her expression still searching, calculating. Such a meek woman. Was this really the type of woman that her brother liked to bring to bed? Or was it just because she was pretty?
Truth be told, the green eyes were striking. The dark hair making her complexion shine. Xene had to hand it to Stephanos, he certainly could pick the prettiest of them.
Her words didn't end there, however, blue eyes remaining locked to Aikaterine's face. "Maybe show you the places you are and aren't allowed to venture?" Xene added. Like her brother's chambers. Holding her shoulders back and keeping her head high, she appeared as if she wanted to say something more scathing than the minute little jabs she'd already placed.
Generally, Xene acted mature, practiced, poised, and proper. But it was difficult when women like this one touched what did not and would never belong to them. Her brother was a married man and this woman would only find herself ruined and discarded when he was finished with her. There was always going to be a small bit of hope in Xene that he would one day remain faithful to his wife, but he would not if he kept finding himself distracted by the pretty women in service to the crown.
Or prostitutes in the provinces.
Breathing out slowly, she reminded herself that not every woman was out to ruin her brother or get him to settle down with them. A fruitless effort, but still one took an affront to. Noting that she didn't exactly know much about the woman before her, the princess decided she wasn't going to bite. For now, at least.
There would be plenty of time for that later.
"Were you looking for the servants' quarters?" she hummed, seeming to soften as if she realized how rude she had just been. Xene offered her an arm to the woman, her smile secret, contemplating. "They're through here," she murmured, carefully leading Aikaterine in their direction. Her gaze drifted toward the gown she held in her arms, as well as some of the make up. "They're leaving tomorrow. Is that what the queen has chosen for you to wear?" Xene found herself observing the woman's complexion.
Little to no make up?
Tilting her head a little, "Did anyone teach you how you should wear your powders or rouge?"

A tour might have come in time, however, there had been little time to worry about something as trivial as sight seeing the palati. Not when her majesty was so fragile and her other time so occupied. She had never been a lady’s maid before, yet wanted to be good at it. Aikaterine always strived to obey and excel at the assignments she had been given in life, even if they ate away at her from the inside. She merely shook her head from side to side slowly, but before she could part her lips to respond, the princess was quipping at a quick pace. Her words filled with a bite and Kat was naive to to the reason why.
She was not foolish enough to answer the questions with snares of her own. While deep down, Kat was capable of such comebacks long ago when she was just a teenager, they were foreign now. And certainly not allowed at her much, much lower station than the blonde princess that stood in front of her.
Her jaw tightening worried about whether to accept the kindness. Her mind raced through her memories, however, none were found. Stephanos and she had not discussed his siblings past the basics. Which any true Taengean knew anyhow. Locked away in Meganea and far removed from court gossip, Aikaterine looked to Xene as a mystery. Her hands adjusted the fabric and took the offered arm tentatively. She barely rested her fingertips against the flesh of the other as she was lead down the hall to where her room was. Of course it was. She knew that. The excitement and terror of tomorrow had her rattled and she knew it.
”Yes. Her Highness has instructed all her ladies to wear this new chiton and look like perfection.” It was a tall order and Aikaterine had hardly begun wondering how she would pull off such a feat. She would have to walk the tight line of doing with Pia said, but she also could only assume that no one should look more beautiful than the Queen. Truly blasphemous to even think such a thing. Kat blinked a few times as she processed the next words, still seeming friendly now as they neared her quarters. They were small, but she was alone. It was easier with no one to disturb when she was pulled some nights.
The threshold was right there. She could have been done with this and away, but that was not a gesture of kindness that she owed Xene for escorting her in the right direction. ”I am afraid that powders and rouges were not my late husband’s favorite. And forgive my mother, though very good at teaching me what it was to be a wife, she possessed no knowledge of such luxuries.” They could have afforded it. They may not have had a title, but were the richest in the province. It was one more the men around them kept the control in a vice. ”Princess Xene, you have already been inconvenienced for the evening, however, I do not want to embarrass the Queen.” Her emerald gaze looked to the containers that held the red tints. She didn’t ask. It would be hard to request anything of someone above her, but she did make it obvious - she hoped - that she was willing to take a lesson.

Escorting this woman to her rooms was not as much of a chore as the woman beside her may have believed. This wasn't the first time she had guided a lost soul toward this wing of the palati and it likely would not be the last. Many of the newcomers over the years were so easily turned around that it was hard not to feel sorry for them. Having been raised within the walls, Xene knew every nook and cranny better than she knew any other place on the planet. And while she had been less understanding as a spry, energetic girl, Xene knew when to help those who were struggling to find their way about.
Regardless of whatever reservations she may have had about whoever she was leading.
When they arrived and Kat explained her situation, Xene felt even worse. Being told to look one way was one thing. But being told so without any guidance on how? Xene frowned deeply, not keeping her usual stoic demeanor as she usually did with people. Her gaze flicked to the powders and the rogue and she sighed softly as she thought it over. It would be cruel to leave the woman to her own devices. To ensure her embarrassment by not helping the newcomer to the castle? Xene really wouldn't be able to forgive herself… nor would she hear the end of the gossip about the queen’s clueless lady in waiting.
“How about we make sure that you at least know what you’re doing with those,” Xene murmured lightly. She motioned for Kat to step into her room, following close behind and only glancing backward one as she closed the door behind her. “We will need a looking glass. A small one will do,” the princess hummed quietly, trying not to snoop too much into the lady’s things. There was a time and a place and it was neither time nor the right place to go letting her gaze wander.
“The powders take longer,” Xene admitted softly, “And they're the most delicate and noticeable if you don’t… cake them correctly,” Xene explained quietly. She turned her head to give an example of an even application. “If you practice once tonight, it will make doing it again in the morning much easier. Do you have your own kohl, Aikaterine?” she questioned quietly, wanting to ensure that Kat would be prepared for the morning.
Her mind had totally wandered away from the little tidbits of information she had stored. Instead, she simply wanted to ensure the woman kept her job and her name out of the court gossip for one more day.

Aikaterine was unfortunately quite trusting in those that were around and helping her. Despite the attitude the princess had first approached her with, this change of heart seemed to make Kat open her room to the girl. A small room with a single bed. That way there wasn’t another servant to worry about where Kat sometimes went in the middle of the night. No one to question anytime she should have been in her room and wasn’t. It was all planned ahead, like it had been done plenty of times before for perhaps even generations. It was not a new concept and would not end anytime soon.
The beautiful, yet simple chiton was put to the side on a table. The room had very little for the princess to even snoop on. Aikaterine had been visiting Vasiliadon with only the necessities when she had met Stephanos. And her brother-in-law was not nice enough to send anything from her home to her. What she had was merely scrounge together or given to her to do her job properly. ”I think the previous lady left a looking glass.” Her finger popped against her lip thoughtfully a moment as she moved around and pulled it out from beneath the straw filled mattress. ”Will this do, Princess?”
Her green eyes watched Xene give an example of the powders being applied before taking the container into her own hand. She would have the whole night to practice. Tonight was for Olympia...as it should be. Aikaterine could be left to toil away with the makeups she was left. The powder was an interesting experiment as some of her face achieved the caking that Xene had warned. Her fingers paused to wipe it away, rub it in, and try again. It was a good first attempt given it was the first time she had ever had it in her hands.
”I think so, this it?” She set the powder down on the table to pick up a long, thin black stick. She had watched other women do their makeup and had seen some of these items being sold in the market. Aikaterine just wasn’t brave enough to defy her husband at the time. The black left a residue behind on her fingers when she hadn’t it over to Xene. ”And then this.” The third tin was a red substance that would be used for her cheeks and lips. There was just a wonder on how in the world to get the right dimension upon her face. She could look beautiful, but not more so than the Queen.
”I am so very grateful for your kindness, your highness. How can I repay you?” She played with the red from her fingertips to her lips. The stain spread across giving them a plush and freshly kissed look. Her eyes widened in wonder if that was the purpose.
