Emilios felt like he was soaring to Olympus, high and happy from everything that life seemed to be putting in front of him. Not only had he told Theo of his intentions to seek her hand, but he had planned to speak to his father before he left about just that-- his wishes to join the two families in marriage. Now, there was nothing holding him back from the future he wished to have. His father would give them land, would set them up for a life together. It seemed all too perfect, and he was beyond content to know that his life was finally going to lead to something that was just for him.
He would get the girl.
He would marry a woman he loved. And he would be happy.
There had been very little said about the relationship. It had all been private and secret. Neither had wanted to ruin the reputation of the other. And with sisters who needed to be married off, too, it would take time for it to be their turn. But he wanted to talk to someone about it-- needed to talk to someone about it.
His visit to Iason was more than just a social call. It had been a few months since he had seen his old friend, and with his own travel coming up, it seemed like a good time to have a conversation with the man. He felt bad for keeping it from his brother since it would have been good to tell him of his good fortune. But he wasn’t ready for that. The only person he wished to tell his secret to was Iason. At least, for now.
Besides, the man said that he had news he wished to share as well. So it seemed fit to give him a bit of his secret as well.
As he rode up to the Dimitrou estate, there was an obvious joy in his demeanor. He was whistling, which was something that was certainly out of the norm for the man. Coming up into the courtyard, he was grinning from ear to ear as he watched step down to meet him. ”Ah, could not wait to see me, eh?” He asked the grin on his face was bright. ”I’ve missed you, too.”

The impending arrival of his old friend had pulled Iason from his usual pursuits in the pastures of Meganea. Fidgeting still with the knowledge of everything that was about to change, he leaned against one of the columns of the house and tore at a piece of grass, shredding it into fine bits before Emilios finally made his way up to speaking distance. Giving a wave of his hand, the young noble stepped out with a grin to meet one of his oldest friends. The prince was his cousin thanks to his aunt's marriage to Irakles, and the two had grown up playing together as boys and then training and hunting together as men. There were few he could trust as much as Emilios.
"Don't flatter yourself. It's a fine day." He scoffed back at his cousin but there was no hiding the relief in his eyes as he strode across the space between them to embrace the older man. Perhaps he would be able to help him with his conundrum, the fears he had in regard to his upcoming marriage. It wasn't a secret the prince had more experience with women than he did.
Stepping back, he kept a hand on his cousin's shoulder to steer him toward the house as servants ran forth to take hold of the horse and belongings the other had brought along. Iason reached for the letter he found himself keeping with him at all times now, the copy of the confirmation that he would be going to Athenia to meet the Xanthos family and be announced as the official betrothed of Princess Persephone if the meetings went well. It was all but a done deal.
"Something you ought to see." Holding the letter out, he waited in silence for Emililos to read and respond to him with baited breath. He was excited, but anxious to see what advice he might be able to wring out of his cousin.

There was something about the joy that seemed to radiate off the man. He couldn’t tell what it was, couldn’t exactly put his finger on what would be making his cousin so happy. Iason had always been more of a private man, harder to convince to join the joys of the flesh that Emilios had come to prefer. And yet, like his own happy demeanor, there had to be something more to it. Could Iason tell that something was different? That, for the past year, he had been with only one woman.
That he’d been so consumed with Theo, his whole lifestyle had changed?
He had tried to keep things as normal as possible, without doing anything that might get back to Theo. Emilios had no desire to be with anyone else, had no desire to live like he had in the past. The man was ready to settle down with a Leventi, of all things. And he hadn’t kept her secret because he was ashamed, he did so because he was concerned for her own reputation. He was known for being a playboy and had been unafraid of hiding that fact. But now, he was willing to give that all up to be with her. And had spent the past year proving it.
And he wanted to share his joy with his cousin before he left.
Emilios followed the man as they moved into the house, trusting the servants to see to his horse. The click of his boots on the floor as he followed Iason was muffled by the laughter in his own voice. He took the letter from him, eyebrows raised as he opened it and began to read it. He didn’t get three sentences in before he stopped in his tracks, eyes looking up to Iason for confirmation. ”Princess Persephone of Athenia? The Xanthos heir? Won’t you be a cute prince.” He teased with a gentle shove of his shoulder and a laugh. ”How long as this been in the works? And why the hells didn’t you tell me sooner?”

He was silent as his cousin read the letter, leading them to the back veranda and gesturing for the servants to bring them a plate of food and drink. The baron sat, hands steepled before him as he watched the reaction and how it stopped Emilios in his tracks. Giving a rueful smile, Iason shrugged and sat back in the chair he'd chosen, holding his hand out to take the letter he'd read over so many times afraid he would discover somewhere that he'd made a mistake. But no, it was all true. He was moving to Athenia, leaving his family and country behind to marry a woman he'd never seen and had never corresponded with.
"Father and I figured if none of the Taengean women would have me at this point perhaps I ought to try my luck elsewhere. There's substantial gold in it for father, and I suppose there's something about me being a Dimitrou that's good for them."
The arrival of wine saw Iason pouring generous cups for himself and his cousin, handing it over to Emilios as he sat in a toast. "Promise to come visit me?"
After he'd taken a drink and settled the letter back in his pocked he gave a bit of a sigh, looking out over the land he loved so much and loathed to leave. If he had met someone here, if there had been anyone he could even consider marrying, he would not be going anywhere. All he had wanted was to find someone to settle down with and run Chaoedia, growing old and happy along with the land, but such a partner had not been found. And so as he neared thirty he had made the choice to instead do what he could to ensure his family would be comfortable. If he and the Xanthos princess had more than one son he could send one back to be his father's heir instead. It would all work out for the best.
"And you? You're looking far more cheerful than a man come to hunt and drink with his most dull cousin."

For someone who would find himself a king, he was acting very casually about the whole thing. And Emilios loved every minute of it. He probably would have been acting the same way, should his father arranged anything similar.
And why hadn’t his father done so? He was almost insulted that Irkales hadn’t thought of it for him. But, if he was being honest with himself, it was more likely that his brother would have been the one who would find himself tied to a Princess. Not like it mattered much to Emilios at this point. He had his own prize, one that he was determined to publicly claim as soon as he returned.
Emilios took the chair next to his cousin, grabbing the offered glass with a salute before taking a deep pull from the drink. As much as he hated the thought of losing one of his closest friends to another kingdom, it would be good for him. While the younger of the two had been hesitant to settle down, Iason was the classic eldest son, needing to provide heirs and security to the family he was leaving behind. “I suppose the Leventi would be your only choice. And you lack a throne of your own to appease the old man.” He would have to play his cards right if he was going to convince Fotios that he was an acceptable choice for Theo.
“Of course I’ll visit you.” He said, as if the notion of having to ask was silly in the first place. They may have been two very different personalities, but they were still bonded. He would miss the man, but he would be starting a family, which was exactly what he wanted from life. And damn it if he wasn’t looking forward to the same thing. And it seemed that Iason noticed his own change of heart. He thought of teasing the man, of suggesting that he was seeing things. Instead, his grin widened.
“I myself have the intentions of taking a bride, cousin.” Another drink as food was brought out, trays of meats and cheeses to sustain them until the evening meal. He pulled a piece of salted meat and cheese, wrapping them together before eating. Wiping the crumbs of cheese onto his pants, he watched his cousin for a reaction to the new. “Should we try for a joint ceremony?”

"I think any Leventi woman who was unlucky enough to be pushed my way would run screaming the other direction. I'm not exactly the glamorous sort they tend to prefer. You'd be better off with them."
Not to mention he had no desire to be connected in any way with Fotios of Leventi. The older man rarely seemed to smile, and he couldn't understand for the life of him what Eirini found so appealing. The Leventi lady had always been kind to him, acting almost as a surrogate mother on occasion when he had been younger after his own mother's passing. She was bright and beautiful, beloved by most, and though he had a handsomeness of his own, he could only imagine she'd married Fotios for the wealth and connections, though he had a keen sort of intellect that left Iason unwiling to be on his bad side.
At the reassurance that Emilios would visit him he smiled broadly, taking another sip of wine. There was a relief in that promise, even if it took a while for things to get settled and for a visit to be arranged, he wouldn't be completely cut off from everyone he loved and the Taengean way he held dear. It was easy to relax with his cousin alone, only when Stephanos of Mikaelidas got involved did he find a need to hide from Emilios on occasion.
The news that his most wild cousin was considering settling down nearly had the wine that he'd drunk flying from his mouth, and if he hadn't been quite so lucky he might have choked on the liquid as it burned down his throat.
"You? Emilios of Mikaelidas, second hand man to the most notorious of Taengea's playboys Stephanos? Getting married? I have to confess, that notion is almost as shocking as my own match." He gave a good natured laugh and raised his glass to his cousin in a toast as the idea of a joint ceremony was offered. "What lady has caught your eye so? If our brides are amenable I can think of nothing quite so entertaining as a joint wedding."

There was a knowing smile on his face with his comment on the Leventi, knowing that it was exactly the family he had intentions of marrying into. While he wasn’t exactly sure that Fotios was someone he wanted to consider family, he had always like Georgios and thought the man was doing the best with what life had given him. With that many daughters and no sons, it was difficult to stay as positive as the man did. And yet, he seemed content with his lot in life. Hell, he was certain that there were times when the man appeared as if he wanted to keep them in his home forever.
The man was not in any rush to marry them off. But he hoped that he would not turn him down.
He let out a chuckle as his cousin seemed to choke on the wine, pretending to be offended by his surprise. Hand coming to his chest, his face turned into one of fake pain. “Is it really so hard to believe? I would like to think that I am a catch, cousin. And how dare you think otherwise.” The corners of his mouth turned upward, obviously alright being teased in this way. It was a shocking revelation for anyone who knew him.
But, if anyone had been paying attention the last year, his mood had changed. He had found himself more settled into Taengea that ever before, his trips between kingdoms few and far between. He only seemed to leave with his unit, a bit more serious about his responsibility. So while he had never been publicly seen with her, there was something different about him.
With a smile, ready to finally share the news with someone, he let out a laugh. “I plan on seeking the hand of the Lady Theodora.” It was like a weight lifted from his shoulders, having the news out to someone. For him, it wasn’t politics and it wasn’t a play for anything other than utter happiness for the rest of his life. “I have been courting her for the past year.”
He leaned forward, “Though you must keep this between you and I. I have to leave for a few weeks and have plans to speak with my father about it upon my return. But she is anxious for it, as am I. We are hopeful that we can stop pretending.” He watched his cousin’s face, hoping that he approved of the news. After all, it was truly a good thing.
He was so close to finally being happy, he could taste it, swirling with the wine on his buds.

"It's not so much hard to believe as it is surprising. I didn't realize you'd been courting anyone, but I'm glad to not have to fear your antics any longer."
He was referring back to a particular incident in which Emilios and Stephanos had come for a surprise visit with Achilleas, an obnoxious bard, and a prostitute. What little he remembered of that night had been destroyed by the massive hangover he'd had when he woke up on the floor of his dining room under a table. It wasn't his fondest memory, but hopefully with Emilios married and settled there would be less of that and more enjoyable hunting trips and casual meetings like this.
The identity of his cousin's intended made him raise his brow, shaking his head slightly and lifting his cup in the other man's direction. He had always been intimidated by the Leventis, with so many gorgeous women he had no idea what to say. Their interactions usually ended with Iason red faced and trying to shrink into the wall until he could finally leave and go home. Emilios truly was brave to think he could tame one of them. He knew only the basic surface information about Theodora, only that she was beautiful, the second eldest, and he hoped would be a good match for his cousin.
"Congratulations, truly. You're far braver than I could ever be, bringing a Leventi into this home could only end in disaster. I hope she makes you happy, cousin. You deserve that."
Iason's toast concluded as he drank deeply from his cup before setting it aside, unsure what would happen now. "So, you've been courting for a year and somehow no one has noticed, I'm impressed. What did Lord Fotios and Lord Georgios think of that? I imagine Lord Fotios was miffed that someone managed to snatch Theodora before Lady Selene snared Prince Zacharias."

He brought his hand to his chest, as if offended by what he had said, “Fearful of my antics? Dear cousin, never have I once put you in any situation you did not end up at least finding semi-amusing the next day.” He thought of their evening spent with the lovely lady Stephanos had provided, and Iason hadn’t thought the situation all that bad. “I have never put your life in any real danger, and I am almost offended that you think otherwise.”
Emilios didn’t know what to expect from Iason about the news. He figured the man would find it surprising for several reasons. One, the Leventis were as pure breeding stock as the horses they raised. It was nearly impossible for anyone but the highest caliber of men to lay any sort of claim. Selene had set the tone for the entire family as to what was to be expected from any sort of marriage proposals. Royal or nothing was the Leventi motto, and until Selene was at least engaged to Zacharias (because he would be a fool not to marry her), it would be hard to get Fotios to agree to any matches.
Especially a match to someone with no real title to his name.
His cousin’s well-wishes gave him hope that perhaps he wasn’t being as ridiculous as he had originally thought. While, yes, she was a Leventi, she was also a second born. She had certainly thought him worthy, the more and more they had spent time together. And he was anxious to be able to officially call her his. His eyes were twinkling, “Good-- it wasn’t obvious that we were sneaking away every chance we got.”
When he mentioned the two Leventi lords, his ears pinkened. It was not a conversation he had thought to have yet. “My unit is heading out late next week, and it was not a conversation I wished to start prior to leaving. I do not think we will be gone long, but I am already planning on speaking to my father about it before I go. It’s a conversation he will have to have with Lord Fotios.” He couldn’t deny the anxiety he felt over that. Perhaps it would turn out as expected, but he knew that it would not be easy to convince the man who paraded around his nieces to the highest bidder would accept a poor marriage easily. He was a Mikaelidas, which brought power of its own. Perhaps his father would ask his uncle to give him a title so that the match was a worthy one.
“When do you leave for Athenia, cousin? Is this the last time I will see be you before you are a even more royal than you are now?”

Never put his life in any real danger. Iason tried to prevent his wince at the memories of the night when he had been so addled he woke up beneath the dining table in his home in Chaoedia. There had been alcohol, a bard, a whore, and some sort of substance that he had agreed to partake in so that the woman would leave him be. It wasn't that he was afraid of the prostitute per se, but he had spent so long trying to be the kind of man his mother was proud of, one who held virtue and noble behavior above all else. Certainly his father wouldn't have said anything, but after twenty eight years of abstaining and a wife across the sea waiting for him, there was little to tempt him now.
Tilting his head to the side like a dog hearing a strange noise Iason narrowed his eyes at his cousin for a moment. It wasn't like Emilios to act shy or cagey in any way. He must have been afraid of hearing no if he hadn't asked Fotios and Georgios of Leventi for permission to marry Theodora yet. What was there to wait for? Even if he was going off with his unit they could be given permission beforehand and the engagement released after his return.
"Speak soon cousin, you never know who else might be looking at her hand. Once Selene and Zacharias announce their engagement the rest of them will be snapped up quickly I imagine. My cousin Vangelis is still unmarried, and a crown prince. I wouldn't put it past Evelli to try to get Theodora shipped across the sea for another crown."
He didn't have any ill feelings toward the Leventi matriarch, but it was clear to everyone who had eyes what Evelli's goals were. She wanted as many queens for daughters as she could manage under one roof, and with five beauties, two unmarried crown princes in Greece, and two girls blessed by Aphrodite, it didn't take a brilliant mind to piece things together. As the conversation shifted, Iason sat back with a sigh, nodding in response to the question.
"I leave for the city in a month, from there I'll sail to Athenia for our final meetings to make sure she and her father approve of me. Just make sure you're in one piece for our wedding?"
