Hangovers in the Kassotis residence was by no means a rare thing- but it didn’t make it any less miserable. Eliana’s head was hurting, her stomach couldn’t decide if it was staging a revolution or just a small skirmish, and everything was horrible. Rarely would Eliana find herself going past her limit, but the night before she went so far past the limit it was no longer within eyeshot. And she felt it today. Her entire body felt it, down to her very being.
Today fucking sucked.
After what was far too long, Eliana made her way out of her bed and down to the kitchens. She didn’t really want to eat, unsure if anything would be able to stay down, but she knew it would be best to have something other than wine and ale in her system. She poured herself some water, grabbed herself some bread, and sat miserably at the small kitchen table. It was quiet for a bit aside from the kitchen staff who now and again refilled Eliana’s water. They were very used to the sight of a hungover Kassotis.
The quiet didn’t last because suddenly Eliana heard giggling. She couldn’t imagine it being her twin, and if it were to be her Eliana would find herself crawling back into bed because she was not in the state to handle that weirdness. As her eyes flickered towards the door, she saw a giggly hetaria and her uncle walk in.
Now- Eliana loved sex. She was a human being, of course, she loved sex. So logically she couldn’t fault anyone in her family for loving sex. Sex was pretty damn great- and fuck, right now it might even help her hangover. Who knows. But that wasn’t the point. She didn’t love thinking about her family, especially her father and uncle, also loving sex. That fact alone made her skin crawl and stomach flip, in this state or not.
Not to mention her uncle was old. And it wasn’t the joking type of old where you look at children, realize they have their own sort of language you no longer understand, and you’re like ‘damn I’m old.’ No, he was actually old. He was old ever since Eliana was born, and he continued to be old as time went on.
None of this was news. Her uncle acted more like a child sometimes than the children in the house. But Eliana was irritable this morning (afternoon?) and the shrill giggle from the airheaded nothing caused the girl’s head to pound even harder. She knew the logical thing to do was to just get up and go back to her bedroom. But why be logical when you could just lash out irrationally? That last part seemed to be much easier.
“Couldn’t you two just have summoned a servant?” Eliana groaned from her spot, “No one wants your sex life rubbed in their face, Uncle.” Which, to be fair, was probably true. Old person sex… gross.

What was the word that Eliana was looking for? It was on the tip of her tongue- ah yes! Death. Eliana wished for death right now. In particular her own. She wished Zeus would strike her down with his lightning bolt and she could be in the underworld and away from here. The alternative would be her uncle dying, and per Diogenes fashion that funeral would be lavish with people from all over flocking to be a part of it. Eliana had no desire to see the exact number of women her uncle had laid with, and even less so to hear the stories of their… time together. No, Eliana’s death was all that was needed. She would happily fall on that sword.
Eliana wished this was the first time she had seen her uncle wrapped in a sheet almost as much as she wished the story of her at four trying to get his attention and accidentally pulling the sheet completely down would die out. She had always known just how abnormal this household was, but it wasn’t until she moved away to work as a handmaiden was that made so apparent.
At his good morning Eliana merely let out a grunt, obviously cranky. She is usually more delightful than this. Yeah, fuck you too Uncle Diogenes. Fuck you to, Though... he wasn't wrong. Eliana's typically cheery, albeit sarcastic, nature did not come from her father after all. As much as she hated to admit it, she felt her personality was closer to her uncle than her father. At least... Eliana hoped that was the case.
Evidently her uncle didn’t quite understand the words no one wants your sex life rubbed in their face because he continued with the giggly girl, talking in his overly loud voice (of which Eliana expected no less from him), and completely disregarding anything she said by sitting the girl at the table.
“I am not moping. I am quite happy, thank you,” Eliana said, though she looked quite the opposite. She leaned back in her chair and stared at the ceiling. What did she do to deserve this torment? Which god did she piss off? Was it Dionysius? All signs were pointing towards him. She’ll leave something at his alter and beg for forgiveness… tomorrow.
Though Eliana did agree with one thing- she did have to get married. Not because she was moping or whatever her Uncle deemed she was. “Besides, it’s not that simple.” She sniffed. It wasn’t as if Eliana wasn’t trying. She was trying. She really, really was.
She looked back down at the wrong moment. Who licks honey off of- ugh! “Excuse me while I barf.” In part because her Uncle was gross, but mostly because her stomach suddenly decided bread was not the best choice this morning, Eliana found herself quickly bolting from her spot at the table and going to the nearest trash receptacle, ridding herself of her breakfast.

Love. What a wildly different definition each and every family member had in the Kassotis house. Her uncle claimed to be prolific in love. He certainly liked sex- much to Eliana’s annoyance. Pallas bragged about bagging Eliana’s friends and fucked about much like her uncle. And Erasmos probably had some poetic definition of love that only an artist could understand and even then just barely understand.
Eliana saw sex and love as two completely different things. She was a Kassotis. Of course she fucked before. She wasn’t near as… blatant as the others. In fact, she’d be much more comfortable if that knowledge remained private. How she spent her time was no one’s business but her own, of course.
But love was completely different to the girl. It was emotional, not carnal. One could have sex without love. Love was something that Eliana would never be able to let go of. She’d want to be with the man when he was gone, and when she was there she’d be the happiest woman on the planet. His happiness would bring her happiness, and the same would go for him. When he was around she’d get butterflies in her stomach. That’s what love was.
It was also completely and utterly pointless.
Eliana had no need for a man’s love. Her parents seemed completely fine without it, or at least it seemed that way. As if a monster like her father was capable of that emotion. Speaking of emotion it was rarely rational. Eliana was a rational woman. She wouldn’t let something like that blind her from what she actually needed in life. Which was namely: To get the fuck out of this madhouse.
So as Eliana finished relieving herself of what little breakfast she had, she took a breath. Fuck all of this. She wanted to groan. Maybe he was right. Maybe she was moping. At the very least Eliana was jaded. It was too much to have her cake and eat it too. She would be okay with just the ca-
She really shouldn’t be thinking about food right now.
Eliana closed her eyes and waited until her stomach decided to quit its gymnastics practice. She ignored the giggling of the girl, even it just caused her headache to pound even more. Finally, she said, “I’m not dull, but it doesn’t hurt to look at a list.” More than likely Eliana would want no man that was associated with their family in any way… but hearing her uncle’s options was much better than being forced to marry whoever her father chose.

Eliana hated being curious about this list But she was, even though she knew it would lead her to disappointed. It was not as if she was unaware of those that are single and those that are taken. She knew full well who those with potential were, and those… she’d would have to compete with.
For instance: Lord Achilellas. Oh, how Eliana would love to be paired with such a man. He was kind and polite and handsome and… Eliana could never help but feel nervous around him. It was an odd feeling, men never made her nervous. But something about him… enticed the girl. And yet Eliana knew her place. Shooting for Achilleas would be shooting far too high. She should have raised standards, certainly, but she was not Icarus. She did not want to fly too close to the sun.
Then there was his brother. Hard pass. Thank you, next.
If Eliana lowered her standards to barons rather than royal lords, she had a much higher chance of finding someone. The problem was that Eliana had no desire to remain in Taengea. She loved her home and she did… love her family somewhat. But there were other parts of it that she did not want to associate herself from. Particularly her father’s activities caused Eliana to… question what it meant to be a Kassotis. So looking to the lower baronies in Taengea wasn’t something that Eliana was interested in.
But neither was she really interested in the barons outside of Taengea either.
Now to be fair Eliana wasn’t aware of all the different baronies outside of Taengea. The one that she was intimately aware of, however, was… well, not something she’d consider even for a second. The Valaoritis. Eliana had not much interaction with Timaeus, but Silanos? She had far, far, far too much interaction with him. He was like… he was like a sweet. Eliana knew if she kept having it she’d fall ill. And yet she couldn’t help herself. And then, she fell ill and instantly regretted it and wondered why she was an idiot and wonder if it was really worth it. And the worst part of it all is she had no answer, neither yes nor no.
Long story short: Over her dead body would she marry a Valaoritis.
“My stomach is sufficiently empty,” Eliana finally spoke as she sipped her water, “However I make no promises. If the names you supply are particularly garish, I might find myself having to relieve myself of yesterday’s dinner as well.”
