Kneeling beside her scorpion cages, Feiyan looked up into her sister’s hopeful face. She knew that Lihua was not fond of her scorpions and wished that she would change her mind about keeping them. The eldest Liu sister often tried to encourage her to give the lethal ones to Kesi, since she used them for venom, and to set the rest of them free in the desert.
“No,” she said, as she picked one up and deposited it in the basket she always carried them in. “I’m going to take some of them to Azariôn so he can help me teach them to sit on my shoulder. Then I can take one of them with me wherever I go.”
“That’s crazy,” Lihua replied, rolling her eyes. “Scorpions can’t be tamed.”
“Are you certain?” she asked, plucking another from the cage. It was important that she picked the harmless ones so that neither she nor the beast tamer would become ill if they were stung. Feiyan had learned to handle them so that they rarely stung her anymore. Azariôn probably knew how as well, and if not, she would show him. “Have you seen his animals? I thought some of them were not trainable either but I was wrong.”
“Well, have fun.” Her sister’s voice dripped with sarcasm. “I’m going to do something more sensible and practice for the show tomorrow. I hope you won’t be in too much pain to perform.”
“You’d like that, wouldn’t you? Then you would be the star of the show, if only for one night.”
Lihua moved out of Feiyan’s line of vision and a few seconds later, she heard the tent flap open and close. Tomorrow’s performance would be the first since the Tempest of Set had arrived in Mirsa el Nasr. The first show always drew the biggest crowd. The young acrobat would not miss it for the world, as she was sure she would receive many gifts the next day from secret and not-so-secret admirers. Wealthy men were abundant in the province and she was always looking for exciting new distractions.
Finished with selecting the scorpions, she adorned her nude body in jeweled chains and braided her long raven hair so that the scorpions wouldn’t get tangled in it when they perched on her shoulder. Feiyan did hope that the creatures could be trained. It would be funny to see the looks of people’s faces when she walked around with them. Not only would they add to her exotic mystique, but they might draw more people to the circus. The unusual and seemingly impossible was always appealing.
Picking up the basket, she slung it over one arm and left her tent, greeting various performers until she reached the tent in which Azariôn resided. Feiyan had told him that she was going to visit him today to ask his advice on something, but she had not revealed what that ‘something’ was.
“Hello, Azariôn!” she called. “May I come in?”

“Are you finally getting rid of those things?”

Azarion had completely forgotten that he had agreed to have Feiyan come and visit. She had said something vague about asking him something, or.... something like that. It had slipped his mind completely, as many things did. Azarion wasn’t exactly known for his intelligence. He wasn’t a complete idiot, but no one was about to go to him for tutoring by any means.
At the time that the woman arrived, Azarion was napping happily in a pile of furs in his small tent, all around him, there were hyenas, also napping. Several of them resting their heads on him as some sort of living pillow. Azarion had no problem being asleep around his most loyal pack members, the hyenas would never harm him, he knew as much. He was part of their pack, he was their alpha, they slept in a group for safety as they would in the wild, sleeping through the hottest parts of the day.
Many said that Azarion was more beast than man, relating to the hyenas more than he did any of his fellow circus members.
Feiyan’s voice calling out to him woke him from his slumber, and with a loud yawn, he opened his eyes and sat up, earning a few annoyed sounds from the hyenas who had been asleep with him as they too were woken up.
“Come in!” He called out in his deep and gruff voice, mind scrambling to remember if he knew she was coming or not. Not that it mattered, it wasn’t like he had been in the middle of anything too important.
He shifted to stand, stretching out a little. He wore nothing but a pair of pants that he had torn the majority of the legs off, leaving him with a sort of makeshift pair of shorts, his usual attire when he wasn’t dressed up for stage.
When Feiyan entered, he gave her a smile. The two weren’t particularly close, but everyone in the circus was considered his family, and the large man would, and had, killed for any of them if deemed necessary.
He noticed the basket she held, and had a pretty good guess what was making the skittering sounds in the woven container. She had a love for scorpions, everyone in the circus knew that, and was often seen with them.
“What can I do for you?” he asked, having no idea if she had told him her purpose earlier or not. At this point, she should be used to Azarion’s lack of memory when it came to most things.

Azariôn didn’t answer right away. Perhaps he had left his tent to feed his animals or put them through their paces. She had not specified what time she would visit. Though she followed a schedule while rehearsing, she liked to be spontaneous in her free time. Now that she was no longer a slave, she could do whatever she wanted whenever she pleased and she exercised that right as often as possible. She had been free for only two years and belonging to nobody but herself was still new and exciting.
Was that a rustling inside the tent? It was difficult to hear anything above the scuttling in her basket. “Be quiet, you silly creatures,” she whispered but of course they didn’t listen. They never did, but she had not believed that a wild animal could listen to a human until she’d seen Azariôn with his beasts. If they could be trained to do all kinds of cool tricks, then why couldn’t a scorpion learn something as simple as sitting on someone’s shoulder?
The basket swayed on her arm as they crawled over one another trying to get out. Feiyan hoped they weren’t too stupid to learn. She was looking forward to seeing Lihua’s mouth drop to the floor when she walked back into the tent with one perched on her shoulder. The young acrobat didn’t entertain the thought that her plan might fail and her sister would gloat, which she most certainly would. They had a good relationship. For all they knew, they were the only two girls in the realm with almond-shaped eyes, and they always had each other’s backs. But like all sisters everywhere, they irritated each other occasionally.
Azariôn called for her to come in and she didn’t hesitate, pulling open the tent flap and stepping inside. Though she was accustomed to muscular men walking around the compound, Feiyan still admired the beast tamer’s physique, appreciatively looking him up and down. A tryst with him would never be possible, for she had heard that she had the wrong kind of plumbing to appeal to him. That didn’t mean she couldn’t admire him.
The second thing she noticed was the hyenas staring at her. She had never been so close to them before and they were quite beautiful. They seemed to be a strange mixture of dog and cat. Feiyan had always stayed away from them, and even now she was a bit wary. How, she wondered, did they like scorpions? If one of them moved toward her, she would pull out one of her pets and toss it at it.
“I’m hoping you can help me train at least one of my scorpions to sit on my shoulder,” she replied to his question. Feiyan set her basket full on the floor. “Do you think it can be done?”

He saw her gaze on his animals as she came in, a lot of people were nervous around them, and he supposed that it was probably for a good reason. While they listened to him most of the time, there was no guarantee that they wouldn’t do something he didn’t tell them to. He had been on the receiving end of many bites and he could attest that they could bite hard.
“Get.” He said, pointing to the tent flap, the hyenas dropped their heads and left, unhappy to have their nap interrupted. They would go back to their area and likely find a place to continue their nap there. He would have to feed them in a bit, and then would see them again then.
He raised an eyebrow as she stated why she was there. She wanted to train her scorpions? He had no idea if that was something that could even be done. Did the things even have a brain? Could they understand commands?
He knew little to nothing about them, but he was curious now to see if they were able to be trained or not. There was no harm in trying at least, worst comes to worst they would find out that they in fact could not be trained.
He motioned for her to take a seat in a chair as he grabbed a couple cups, the cleanest he had, and poured some wine, setting the cups on the table in front of them so she could have one if she wanted before he sat across from her.
“Tell me what you know of them? How do they act? Do they have a leader when in groups? Or are they animals that like to be alone?” He asked, he needed to know a few things about them to figure out how to best approach attempting to teach them something. If they were going to try, they might as well at least do so in a way that might actually work.
He didn’t know how much she even knew about the creatures, not sure if she actually studied them as he had his animals. Did she know how they acted? Did she know what their habits were in the wild?
“Take one out, put it on the table. Lets see if it’s even smart enough to know anything.” He stated. What would the creatures respond to? Food? Pain? Fear?
For that matter, what did the things eat? And could they comprehend fear? He had so many questions. When it came to animals, Azarion’s mind actually seemed to kick into gear.
