Walking at night alone would be terribly uncouth for a lady. At any point danger might occur. And who knew what improper thoughts the woman might have? A lady should be accompanied while wandering in the evening- if not all hours of the day by her servants and handmaidens.
But this was Argothia and Eliana didn’t give a damn.
In Argothia it was when it was night that it was most alive The stars served as lights (well, torches too, but stars were more fanciful) guiding the patrons to the next tavern, gambling house, or brothel. Eliana didn’t fear many things, and wandering the streets in the evening was no different. She loved watching the people spend their coin in hopes of gathering more. She loved joining them, in fact. No one knew how to gamble like a Kassotis.
But tonight was not a night for gambling. Tonight was a night just for fresh air and for companionship. In particular, for Alexei, her dog, to get off his lazy butt and take a walk for once. By her side he moved, tongue panting and a goofy grin on his face as he looked at all the lively people. Drunkards wandered the street, stumbling into one tavern after they had been kicked out of the other. People shouted and cheered from the gambling houses. And women waved their fingers and men, trying to entice them toward them. Those were the whores, not quite the shining pillar that was Argothia.
But the women accompanying some of the more esteemed men certainly were. The Hetaria, worshipers of Aphrodite (usually), and excellent companions if that was what you were interested in, escorted the men while hanging on their arm, their laughter bubbling all down the streets. They certainly weren’t Eliana’s taste, but… well, they were working women so she had to respect that. Not that she’d ever want their job.
Especially if they had to deal with men like her Uncle. Gross.
“C’mon Alexei,” Eliana said as she quickened her pace. That was when she was passing a tavern. Peeking through the window she saw chairs being thrown and punches being had. People were shouting. One man fell through a table. Eliana blinked, wondering if a moment if she should stop it. Then she wondered if she could stop it. No sooner did she think that did a man crash through the door. It fell to the ground in a plume of dust and dirt. Alexei wagged his tail like it was some visitor who had just came home, and then laid on the ground next to the man.
“Well aren’t you useless,” Eliana snorted, more at the dog than the man. What in gods name kicked up this fiasco?

Nikos was in Argothia enjoying a lively night of drink and gambling. He’d done this often over the years, but even more so since last year. There was rumor, of course, that a girl had broken the baron’s heart and now he was drowning himself in as much wine and opium and brothel girls as he could afford to try to erase the memory. Nikos of Condos never confirmed this when asked, simply and skillfully changed the subject – or if he was in a particular mood, he would outright deny such a claim – then he’d grab a drink and walk away.
Tonight had begun like most nights in Argothia. Wine, food, and a game of cards. Nikos sometimes cheated when his hands weren’t lining up well enough to at least win half the time, but usually he was skilled enough to get away with it. But it seemed he had been flagged because of the over-filled bag of coin he’d walked away with just a few nights ago. He was being watched tonight, though he wasn’t aware. Least not until someone came up behind him at the table and put their hand on his shoulder. When confronted about the cheating, Of course, Nik laughed it off and insisted that it was an absurd idea, putting on all the charm he could muster. Finally, the guard decided he’d been mistaken in what he’d seen and went about making his rounds in the establishment.
Nik didn’t learn his lesson, though, and the next time he cheated, one of the other players at the table with him spotted it. Needless to say, this began a loud debate of Nik’s honor and soon it turned into an outright bar brawl. Ending with Nikos being physically thrown through the door of the establishment! Oh he got a few good hits of his own in before he was thrown out.
Now Nikos lay there in the street atop the busted door, groaning in pain as he tried to regain the breath that had been knocked out of him. ”Could have at least opened the door before you threw me out of it!”]/b] he called out to no one in particular. As Nik lay there, satisfied to just be for a moment, a dog came over to join him on what was left of the door. ”Oh… hello.” Nik craned his neck to look at the dog curiously. ’Well aren’t you useless.’
Nikos’ gaze shifted to see a dark-haired girl looking a bit derisively at him. Or was she looking at the dog? ”Are you addressing me or the dog?” With a chuckled, Nikos rolled to his feet and began dusting off his expensive chiton, frowning at the condition of his clothes. The change of position of his lips made him aware that his lower lip was busted and swelling. He lifted a hand and gingerly touched his mouth. His fingers came away stained crimson. ”Old Corvus is stronger than he looks.”
