Yiannis’s dreams return him home to Colchis. Yiannis finds himself in the courtyard of the palati. A gentle cawing catches the warrior’s attention, bringing his gaze upwards to the roof of the stables. There sits a raven, practically preening in the sunlight. The vain creature makes a big show of its arrival, making sure that Yiannis is looking at nothing else other than him.
The bird grows more agitated. His almost song-like call transforms into an ear-splitting screech. It is clearly upset about something, but the source of its angry cries is not clear. There is nothing that the young man could do to quiet the noise besides covering his ears, but this displeases the raven.
When the Prince attempts to do such a thing, the bird flies off of its stoop and circles Yiannis, lightly pecking at his hands. Once he can hear the bird properly again, the bird returns to its perch where the shrill cries continue, seemingly never-ending as the dream drags on.
Then the bird suddenly launches itself into the sky. Quickly diving down low, it flies directly towards the prince. Yiannis does not have the time to move before the bird’s claws reach out and grabs a necklace hanging low around the prince’s neck. When the bird rises again keeping the necklace out of his reach, Yiannis can see that the sole charm around the foreign jewelry is a religious totem.
Yiannis might have never seen this carving before, but he knows that he needs it back in his possession. The raven is low enough to the ground that the totem could be in his grasp if he jumps high enough, but every time he tries, the raven moves upward. The religious totem is always just out of reach no matter what the prince does. He could scream, beg, and swat at the bird, but nothing changes the Raven’s determination to keep the totem away from Yiannis.
In near-desperation, the man calls out in prayer for the gods to help bring an end to this predicament. Almost instantly, the bird responds by taking off in the direction of the heart of the city. Giving chase, Yiannis might notice how the bird never truly flies out of sight as it leads the man through the capital city. It only pauses in front of the hall of the gods, but just long enough to toss the totem inside before flying up towards the sun, leaving Yiannis behind as the dream fades away.
