Belly of the Beast Quest - Athenia Closing: On-Going. By Sign Up Only.
Along the three harbours of the Athenian coastline are many caves. These pass in and out of the rockface, creating a labyrinth of passages beneath the cliffs. Such coves have been the subject of much speculation and sparked many attempts to see the thoroughfare's mapped and catalogued. In recent years, discussions of a possible gold store; ore that would see Athenia independent from their reliance on the northern state of Colchis, have been explored. Alongside noble ambitions to see Athenia financially independent, workers and excavators are jumping to nominate themselves as part of the expansive crew, working in the coves. For it was here that a famed European ship once crashed against the Athenian coastline, losing its rumoured treasure to the rocks...
Funded by the Stravos family, an expedition of experts have been permitted the explore the dangerous coastline and delve into the depths of the caves. Some are mercenaries, hired for their strength, quick wits and sheer expendability. Others are members of the Houses that have forwarded the funds to see the venture completed; watchful eyes that are keen to see their investment pay dividends. Even some of the higher royals have been invited on this particular day to witness the work that has been completed under their allowance. An inspection, of sorts, to ensure that progress is being made as planned.
Progress, however, comes with risk. With stormy seas buffeting the rocky coastline, each step is treacherous. Just how many of our adventurers will be brave enough to make their way in? How many will be accidentally pulled along for the ride? And how many will come out alive?

How It Works Quest Rules
A Quest works on a similar principle to a DnD style game. Firstly, all players post in order to get their character into the game and into the story. Then a Decisions post is made by the staff admin, directed at one particular player. This is then immediately responded to by that player and then an Outcome post created afterwards. Then all players post once more (in whatever order they like) and a new Decisions post is made, this time directed at someone else. The Decisions posts will normally go in a strict order so that everyone gets a go but may be prone to shifting in case a particular character works well for a situation, so keep an eye out. All Decisions and Outcomes posts will work similar to curveballs, throwing situations at your character and sparking dice rolls for certain outcomes. If you are unsure at any point on how to go about replying to this thread please use the #athenia kingdom channel in the Discord server to ask any needed questions.
Sign-ups are still on-going. This Quest will be opened on the 21st December 2021. You have until then to sign your character up! Due to the DnD nature of the thread, no characters will be permitted to join after this point. If you want to take part in a Quest in the future, keep your eye on our Weekly Broadcast - all Quests are announced there!

Aea pulled her ebiblema tighter to her face, glancing every so often at her father as he conversed with an important-looking man with scrolls tucked neath his arm.
All on the coast, people moved. So many people. Too many. She'd never been near such a great number all at once.
Consciously, she pulled at the hem of her chlamys and huddled closer to Kaia's side. As her father's lips moved, she tried to read them but he was too far to make out the shape of his lips. Her uncles were likewise standing near Hektos, listening to the conversation unfolding.
Then Hektos pointed to she and Kaia and Aea furrowed her eyebrows, looking up at her cousin as if Kaia might know what that meant, but of course she didn't.
After a while, the man with the scrolls nodded and transferred a small bag of coin to Hektos' palm, and finally Uncle Dasmo broke away from the group and cut across the beach to the girls.
Bright white sand sprayed up by the scuff of his sandal and the golden sun beat prettily along his sea-washed skin. In his cleanest white tunic, he might have been an Athenian seaman if Aea didn't know him as a Colchian brigand.
The closer he got, the more Aea turned from Kaia to face him and by the time he stood near enough to touch, she was facing him completely with her neck craned to peer attentively at his bearded face.
"You're slaves." His voice was low, quiet, and impartial. "We're lending you to the crew to dive and wiggle in small spaces."
Aea's eyebrows jumped and though words burned on her tongue, she stifled them and only nodded in acceptance because what else could she do? Argue?
"You're fine swimmers, you'll be alright. And besides, slave or no, they'll have the men go first." He pointed behind them to a man hunched over a makeshift table. "Go tell that man you're to be cave-crawling."
In a daze, Aea didn't flinch or pull away when Dasmo snatched the epiblema off her head and pinched the chlamys from her shoulders to leave her in a thin tunic and nothing else. She only grasped her upper arms and walked with short, quick steps behind her cousin, ducking her head and staring at her feet as she went.
Kaia spoke with the man at the table while Aea huddled close at her back and tried her best not to think of black caves where story-bound creatures would rise and swallow her whole. At least it was something to focus on. At least it was something she was good at. Perhaps she'd even find something of value and gain favor for the night.
Down the shore, toward the bulk of the crowd, she stepped in Kaia's shadow and did not unfold herself until the sacrifice had been slaughtered, the announcement had been made, and the first workers had departed.
Tentatively, Aea stepped into the sea's lapping foam. Bare of sandal, her toes dug into the pliable sand and she tucked her wind-swept hair behind her ear. She was a fine swimmer. Everything would be alright. Feeling her father's hard stare at her shoulder, she hurried into the water, the warm sea rising from her ankles to her thighs the further she went. Now submerged to the hips, she took a breath, closed her eyes, and disappeared into the sea.
Under the waves, the cacophony of excited excavators disappeared. The soft hush of the water did not even allow a mutter to pass through Aea's ears. For a few moments, all was peaceful and warm, but all too soon she surfaced near the labyrinthian cave outcropping and the peace was broken.
Quietly, she grasped the shale shelf near where some of the other workers stood and crawled from the water, crouching low on the small plateau. As she slicked her hair from her face, she kept her eyes on the section overseer and tilted her ear to him with care.
Aea did not know what was truly happening, nor what this was for. She knew only that some lord had paid dearly to have these caves searched, and that there might be something of value as an aside.
She glanced over her shoulder at the beach beyond, all who stood there nothing but long black saplings standing in the sand. Maybe she didn't have to tell her father if she found something. It would be a secret, just for she and Kaia to share. Her family received the funds for she and her cousin's labors, it was not as if they needed more than that.
Minutes later, she dove into the soft waves at the direction of the overseer's finger and kicked through the water until she rose into the shallows of her assigned cave. She released a shuddering breath and fingered the dagger pressed to the bare strip of flesh at her side. There were no monsters here. No monsters.
A roar startled her and she turned wide-eyed just in time to see the wave lash into the cavern's yawning opening. Aea held her breath and did not fight the current as it slapped her back and down. Only when the swell calmed around her limbs did she kick her way to the surface once more. When she came up for air, it was with a desperate gasp.
And she found herself in the dark.
