The death of their mother four years ago had forced Persephone to grow up a lot faster than any child should. Now she had to stifle her playful nature and be both the princess and a female mentor to her little sister Emilia. She had to teach Emilia all the life lessons vital to young ladies that her mother had taught her, and yet, Persephone still felt she needed so many lectures. She missed her mother, and no doubt Emilia did too. Persephone would never be able to live up to that parental figure, especially not when she also bore the weight of her royal duties on her shoulders and spent more and more time working alongside their father.
At fourteen, Persephone should, by all accounts, still be a child, but she so rarely had an opportunity to show it. Everything had to be prim and proper. But not today. Today, Persephone didn't have to wear her newly made crown. She didn't have to constantly consider her posture, voice, or etiquette. Today was earmarked as sister time, and it was one of the increasingly rare times that Persephone could unwind and enjoy Emilia's company.
As she stood, bare feet in the tall grass by the big tree in the palace gardens, she looked over her shoulder at her little sister. "Emilia, you go hide, and I'll find you, okay?" she said with a smile and sparkles in her eyes. "I am going to count to ten," she added and turned her head to face the tree. She couldn't stifle a giggle herself as she closed her eyes, listening for Emilia's footsteps. "One!" she counted loudly and giggled again.

That one looked like a butterfly.
And the one beside it was a horse.
Emilia lay on the grass, looking up at the sky and picking out shapes in the clouds. A small one floated over to the horse and seemed to attach itself to its forehead. It was a unicorn! And there was a flower, and … and something she couldn’t quite put her finger on. The young princess could spend hours watching the clouds and daydreaming about the forms she saw in them. Spending time in the garden was so much more fun than being stuck inside studying and listening to her boring tutors drone on and on. Even then, she often looked out the window at the sky.
It would be more fun if Persephone was with her. Her sister was physically in the garden, but Emilia felt that her mind was far away. It almost seemed as if she had forgotten she even had a sister and the eight-year-old missed her. She knew that Persephone was helping Father with his duties, but she wished he didn’t take up so much of her time. Even when she was right beside her, Emilia felt as if she was all alone. One day her sister would be Queen, but that was many years in the future and by that time, Emilia would be married to a handsome Prince and have a family of her own. She wouldn’t long for Persephone’s company as much as she did now.
As she watched a cloud shaped like a snake slither across the blue expanse of the sky, she heard Persephone address her. So she hasn’t forgotten about me after all! Her heart swelled with joy and she jumped to her feet in one graceful movement and grinned at her sister. Hide and Seek was one of Emilia’s favorite games and she knew a lot of places where she could conceal herself. “Okay!” she exclaimed. “Don’t peek!”
The little princess took off at a run, sprinting across the garden to an area where thick flower bushes bloomed. Picking one that was pink like her peplos, she crouched behind it. Persephone will never find me here!
