There was something magical about the market. Maybe it was the cacophony of music and noise that filled the air. Or the gentle bump and weave of the coward as people searched for their wares. But Selene loved the crush of the vendors all eager to make a coin or two. Her mother preferred to shop from the comfort of their home, to see only the best items available without having to be bothered by the slaves that were also running errands for their masters. The girls spent too much time at home to simply allow the same practice as their mother partook of.
It had been a few days since she'd been able to take with her sisters, curious as to what she had missed in the chaos of the festival. She had barely had a chance to talk to Pia about anything, so it would be good to catch up with her. When she had spotted her sisters from the carriage of the princess, she had excused herself to take the opportunity to finish her journey to the Circus with them. And the Princess had insisted that she leave, so she hadn't felt guilty. Besides, she had questions for the girls prior to the races. Pia certainly had to have news to share with her sisters.
And Theo was newly engaged. How was her sister feeling about it all?
For the first time, there was a bit of jealousy for her younger sister. She was truly pleased for the match, knowing that it was a fine match and one that her uncle and mother had longed to create. Selene had hoped to have been married at this point in her life, but her father gently reminded her that good things came to those who waited. And the Gods had made her a suitable match-- she just had to be patient and wait for it. The blonde could push her own disappointment down to be genuinely happy for her sister. She wanted her to be happy, and a good marriage would be the start of that. Perhaps Theo had stayed mum on the issue because she knew that her sister wanted nothing more than a marriage like the one she would be entering into. But Selene's love and loyalty to her sister was far stronger than any jealousy she was harboring.
Dressed in a her pink chiton with gold accents, Selene slipped an arm into that of Theo's after their greeting, her other pulling Pia into the group with a smile. "I am desperate for some blue linen, sisters. And some conversation." Her hair was tucked into braids and a bun, gold rope intertwined with the blonde locks. She looked so different from her sisters, but they had all a similar smile. As if they all held secrets. "Please tell me I am not the only one who is after a new chiton." Her smile was bright, happy. She had truly forgotten how nice it was to be out of the house with the women she considered so dear to her. And with the race only a few hours away, the excitement in the air was palpable.
It was going to be a good day, indeed.

Selene's arm linked through hers; drawing the three of them closer together. She glanced up as if being violently pulled from her thoughts and offered a polite smile as her sister expressed her eagerness to find a new bolt of linen...but her mind was anything but on this shopping venture.
Selene had insisted, of course. After her new engagement and the shock and celebration had worn off, they were all left to the way things were before. ...But nothing really felt the same now for Theo. Because when the engagement was finalized, and the announcement was made a hole was wrenched through her and it had been festering for days now. What had she done?? By agreeing to marry Achilleas she was effectively ending her love affair with his brother Emilios; the man she wanted to marry. The man she'd thought had been arranged for her. This was all a horrible misunderstanding that it was just far too late for her to back out of now.
"Blue will look lovely with your complexion..." And it would. With Selene's golden blonde hair and fair skin, she had always been stunningly beautiful; an envy to anyone in Serenne. Why she'd not been chosen to wed Achilleas over her was lost to her as while she'd been told that she too was enviable, she was younger than her and of darker features. Why not Selene? She and Achilleas would be lovely together! ....Then again, it wouldn't do to marry two women from the Leventi household to two brothers from the Micaelidas house. While her parents esteemed to reach beyond their station, even that was a stretch. ...It seemed there was no option available to her that would lead to her being with Emilios and it was crushing.
Theo's stomach was in knots thinking about it. She'd been thinking about it for days; what else could she do? What would Emilios himself say when he returned? She couldn't stand the thought of losing him, but what other option was there? She could break the engagement, but that would bring dishonor to her family; to her parents. And there would be no way that the Micaelida's would allow for such a slight against the Achilleas. They would break the entire contract and walk away.
She brushed a lock of dark hair from her forehead with the back of her wrist. The Gods were cruel. She'd been faithful in her prayers to Athena but it seemed Aphrodite was jealous in her attentions as she had not the wisdom to figure a way out of this. As Selene bubbled about having a new chiton, Theo blurted out a snarky reply. "You already have so many, dear.. what more could another do?"
Immediately she regretted it. She didn't mean to be so short with her Selene. Of all her sisters, she seemed to be the most like her, after all. But she just didn't have the capability of being excited about shopping at the moment. As with most things, she'd simply come to support her and do as she wished. Do as they all wished, as it was her lot to please them. Such the life that came with being a child in the middle. "I'm sorry, Selene... I'm afraid my mind is elsewhere. Of course, you should have a new gown. Perhaps I will find something I favor as well..." In truth, Theo was content with the items she had. Though she did enjoy wearing new things for Emilios. He was the only person she'd any desire to have attracted to her; to see her as beautiful, even if others already did. But what did it all matter now anyways? Dressing for him would be a thing of the past. Now she would have to dress for Achilleas and the idea of doing such a thing didn't have the same pull to her. Of course, he was immensely handsome... With broad shoulders, dark hair and striking blue eyes. Blue eyes that reminded her so much of Emilios's. So much so, she'd confused the brothers after not seeing them for so many years. But where Achilleas seemed reserved and stoic, Emilios was adventurous and dashing. He didn't take no for an answer and he challenged her unlike anyone had ever challenged her. She adored their battles; their wordplay and his humor. All of which she had no understanding of with Achilleas. "Pia, tell Selene she would look lovely in blue.."

They were a sight to behold, three Leventi sisters all walking arm in arm down the streets. Two dark, one fair but all with that unmistakable air of noble bearing, the same proud jaw and regal nose graced them and spoke of who they were in the world. Olympia had chosen a chiton in a dusty rose color for the day, her own dark hair pulled back in braids with sections left allowed to curl around her cheeks and forehead. It was a blessing for her that this one was able to drape loosely over her stomach, paranoia that someone would notice the change in her condition had caused her to take extra precautions even though there was only the slightest of change. If anything, she had lost weight from the stress and nausea that had accompanied her discovery.
Sharing a bed with the king on rare occasions hadn't seemed like a bad idea, in fact it was key to her goals. By becoming a mistress, she would be favored and given a marriage match to rival Theodora's own, and if a child were to come of it, she had hoped it would make the match come quicker. Instead, Stephanos had to join the picture. Instead of knowing with certainty that her child was the king's bastard and being able to leverage a quick bit of matrimony, she was left with a question about the paternity. Unless she could turn this to her advantage. Convince the king to marry her to his son so that if the child looked like him, no one would question it. Convince Stephanos that the child was his and it would be best for them both to wed, an heir was an heir and a daughter could always be used politically. It certainly wouldn't be the only one. Just, the first.
As Selene tugged her close, Pia gave a closed lipped smile that was both a loving look to her siblings and a biting back of the nausea that occasionally surfaced. She leaned into her elder sister, touching her head to her shoulder briefly and giving Theodora a look of reassurance that she would find a way to calm the prattling.
"You would look lovely in blue of course Selene. After all, hundreds of chitons won't go amiss when we are celebrating your wedding and visiting a sister in the palace."

The three really were quite a sight. Dark and light, pale contrasting colors as they made their way through the market. Eyes followed them as they walked, whispers of rumors and desires followed them as they went. The talk was part of the reason Selene preferred to go out in the morning, when it was far quieter and easier to avoid men who stared too long. But in a group, like this, they were far safer. And she certainly wasn't thinking about who was looking at them. Instead, she was thinking about Theo's words.
Her face feigned shock at her sister's words. "As if I need to be told how fetching I would look in blue!" She teased the girls, bumping her hips into theirs. "And how dare you think I need the reassurance in purchasing another chiton." There was a lightness in her voice, joy in her words. "Thinking I'm so down on my own fortune that I would need your honeyed words to make me feel better. Hush, sweet sister." Her eyes were bright with mirth, obviously taking no offense in her sister's own curt reply. "Some of us still need to attract a worthy husband, Theo. What if a pretty new chiton catches the eye of a prince? Or the like? What if Aphrodite's match for me likes best the way I look in blue?"
Selene gently tugged on a loose piece of Theo's curls, smiling. "Which you have yet to share your feelings on the matter, dear Theo. Are you happy? Is he kind?" These were things she wanted to know. The title was secured, but her feelings were aloof to her. She wanted to make sure her sweet middle sister would be happy with the marriage that had been placed in front of her. "And be honest, Theodora. I'll not have you lying in fear that I might spill your secrets. I've never given you reason to think otherwise." She would focus on why Pia looked so ill once she had heard the feelings of Theo.
One sister first. Then the other. As was her usual manner with her siblings. They were most important to her. Far more important than a good marriage, at this point. The marriage would come. But for now, her sister's were her largest concern. And she would get the truth out of each of them.

Theo tried to smile at her sister's chiding. She knew she meant it all in good fun. And were she a normal bride-to-be she would likely find the humor and banter back; excited in her own way to be married. To take up her place in a family seat as a baroness. To run a home of her own and begin the next chapter of her life. But only a few days had passed since the announcement and her insides were too raw.
After their families event, the Mikaelidas's had gone home and her stomach had twisted itself into knots she had no idea how to untangle. She hadn't yet seen or spoken to Emilios and she wasn't aware how to tell him that she was engaged to his brother. A brother she knew very well he held a certain animosity towards, even if he didn't much like to speak of it. They were in love and there was nothing else Theo wanted. She didn't need the barony. A title was all well and good and gave one a certain amount of stature in the eyes of the court. It was why her mother was so eager for the arrangement. But she'd take what she had with Emilios over that any day.
So Theo was more than happy to sink into silence when Selene told her to hush... even if she didn't truly mean it. Even if she was simply goading her into having a good time. Normally Theo would banter back with a witty retort. But she couldn't focus on such things. Selene dreamed on; considering the possibility of attracting a prince. Of calling this fictional catch Aphrodite's match. But Aphrodite had failed her. Athena had turned her back as there was no wisdom in this match. She'd been abandoned by the Gods to figure this out on her own.... either that or they were watching from Olympus with great amusement to her plight; a sort of game to keep them from growing bored behind their grand walls.
Selene drew her attention back by catching a lock of her hair. With her questions, a lump formed in her throat. But she forced a gentle smile and looked down at the road they walked on; finding it difficult to describe Achilleas. Which, on the whole, would have been highly unusual for their sister. "I.....know very little about him." Her entire body was screaming in frustration inside, yet she held her arms in her sisters in a most relaxed manner; belaying her horror over the whole situation. "He seems an amiable sort. I'm sure mother knows what she's doing..." She had to stop speaking. The lump in her throat had grown to unbearable and if she said anymore, she'd likely shed tears. Something she couldn't allow. Her sisters didn't know of her affair with Emilios, and no one ever would. It was over. It had to be. And the sooner she faced that, the sooner she could step into the role set out for her. Even knowing it would make her bitterly miserable and envious of what could have been.

Olympia held tightly to Selene as they walked down the street, marveling at the change that would soon befall them. Theo was engaged, it seemed impossible that she would be leaving them and living somewhere else, being the mistress of her own house with a husband and eventually children of her own. It was the life they all dreamed of really, and Theo was getting it first. Jealousy had been eating her alive ever since the announcement was made, the engagement of her elder sister and a Mikaelidas nonetheless. That was what she had wanted ever since she knew what it was to have any sort of power. A prince, a baron, title, fortune, and power. Theo was getting it handed to her on a plate, while Olympia was having to gain any foothold with subterfuge. She didn't resent her sister, not really, but the seeds were there.
And Selene wasn't making this any easier with going on about it all.
"Of course mother knows what she's doing. You'll have made the best match in our family when this is done Theo. I wish it was me. I'm ready, to leave home and make a new place my own. Watch the little ones run about. I'd give anything to trade places with you."
It wasn't even remotely a lie. Achilleas was a stunningly handsome man, with the darker hair she preferred in spite of her previous dalliances. If the opportunity were given she would trade places with Theo without question. A babe with Mikaelidas features would not look amiss in the household of a cousin. But no, that was her sister's fate. She had to find a way to make her own, to grapple for the future of herself and her child, even if the best she could reasonably hope for was a payment and a time in a country estate until it was done.

If anyone knew Olympia's pain, it was Selene. She was waiting for her own match, for someone who was worthy to be a husband and had a title to match. Her family's ambitions had turned into her own, and she was well aware of how painful it could be. She was 29, unmarried and longing for a house of her own, and she was only getting older. It wouldn't be long before men would start to pass over her because they thought she was infertile. Or that there was something else undesirable about her. The fear warped its way into the pit of her stomach, clenching at her heart with each passing festival.
She had to have faith, or else she would go mad.
Selene could tell that something was amiss with Theo. Knowing her sister well enough to sense the change, she was puzzled. The marriage was something they had been longing for, had been praying for. The family was excited for the opportunity to be in the Mikaelidas family. Marrying a cousin to the royal line was no small thing. And yet, Theo was acting like her world was crashing down on her. The middle sister hadn't been at the chariot races, hadn't been at her fiancé's side. Everyone knew of the relationship. Why didn't she seem more happy about the match? "We shall have our turns, Pia. Let us get our sister settled into her new life as a baroness and then it will be our turns." She had to believe that there was more to this than just being the eldest, who watched her siblings settled into lives of happiness. "He seems like a good man, if nothing else. I remember him a bit from our childhood, even though his brother was who I spent the majority of that day with."
The Mikaelidas boys had come with their father to seek out horses, and Selene and Emilios had been the ones who had raced off to challenge the other in a ride in the forest. She had beaten him easily, but he had taken it in stride. Other than that memory, she knew very little of the pair. Now, they had both turned into handsome men, and both would make fine husbands. Theo was lucky to have made such a good match, and yet Selene could tell that she was not as happy about it as she should have been. A part of her wanted to share her own secrets, that she was hopefully going to Athenia to visit with the princess. And that she had written a letter to the prince of Colchis. Both had been within moments of each other, and both were still only known to the Gods.
Maybe she would share the secret, to shift the mood. But for now, she remained silent on the matter.

Part of her should have felt ungrateful for how she was acting..how Pia responded to her anxiety. Were this a normal engagement, she might say the same thing, after all. Achilleas was one of the most eligible bachelors in Taengea. Aside from Zacharias or Stephanos themselves, she could really do no better. ...Except she had and he had no claim to title or lands. It didn't matter if Zacharias himself had asked for her hand, she would have still felt this twisting knot in her stomach. The one that let her know she was losing everything by marrying Achilleas.
With Pia's words, she looked up at her younger sister in frustration. But she stifled her irritation and forced herself to smile before breaking her hold with Selene to step up to a cart of merchants wares; trailing her fingers against a strand of beads as Selene fought to appease the woman. Theo was a bit of the oddity in the group. Or at least, she'd felt like it. She wasn't one to gossip or carry on about trivial topics that most women did. When she spoke of marriage with her sisters before, it wasn't a far-fetched reality. When Emilios returned, he would be speaking to his family to make a proposal of marriage. She'd only really enjoyed the topic within the last few months. And, granted, when they spoke, they never named names. The Mikaelidas men were all they'd fantasized about. Which ones, however, remained vague. Now that she was engaged to the wrong brother, the subject left a bitter taste in her mouth and she found herself not very fond of speaking about it at all again. ...Yet here they were. And she was sure that for the next few months, it would be the only thing they could talk about.
She'd have to get used to it, she supposed. "Lenie is right. You'll have your turn soon enough. And when you do, I hope he'll be just as .....advantageous as Achilleas." She just hoped that for Pia's sake, she'd be more content with her parent's selection than she was.
Theo smiled as Selene shared her story of when the brothers visited as children. Not because of Achilleas interest in her at the time, but because of Emilios. They'd talked about that day when he'd first stumbled upon her a year ago. How Selene had bested him and how he had no interest in her because of it. She felt defensive for her sister at the time but somehow liked the fact that he seemed to be so taken with her instead.
Clearing her throat, she shook her head and the smile from her face before holding up the beads near her throat for the girls to either nod or frown at while she spoke. "He chased me down to the beach... then stole my hair ribbon and refused to return it. ...Then he told me some silly story about.....how the sun boils the water on the ocean when it sets and the only way to keep it from happening and to save all of the fish in the sea was to kiss someone just as it touched the water.."
She twisted the beads around her fingers as she thought of the memory. It had been a childish game... charming at the time, but so long ago the memory had taken on a dream-like quality. One could wonder if it'd ever really happened or not. "....I never got that ribbon back..." She shook her head and untangled the beads from around her fingers before dropping them back into the cart to turn to Pia. She took a deep breath and traced her hand over the strap of her chiton. "...Titles aren't everything, Pia.. In the end, it's not the title you marry but the man who holds it that you should find appealing." Her words were a bit of a direct contradiction to everything they conspired about for the past few months. Granted, she never talked about having a title or lands, but she never eluded to such things being something that one shouldn't be interested in either. She drifted away to look over a cart laden with fine oils and fragrances; searching through a few and lifting them to her nose to smell.
