At twelve years old, Evangelina felt as self-conscience as she’d ever feel in her life. Despite not having grown any more since last winter, she was all long limbs and painfully awkward. Her face was caught somewhere between that of a child and that of a woman, her eyes and mouth filled up too much of the space while her chin, nose, and cheekbones protruding just a little too sharply. At least she wasn’t alone in these transformations. Nana was just as gawky as she was… that was her only solace in this time of great despair.
Theo and Selene were already starting to get breasts, perhaps that was what had possessed her that morning to attempt to feel her own underclothing with some rags hoping to at least appear to be as mature as Theo and Selene. She’d tied her ribbon girdle around so tightly she hoped it’d help keep her makeshift breasts in place. Today was going to be the day that Nikos of Condos noticed her. She was going to make sure of that.
Glancing over to Nana, she pushed her shoulder’s back. “Hey, Nan… do you think I need a couple more rags?” Her hands went up to her makeshift breasts and she tried to adjust them a little. “Do you think Lord Nikos likes women with full breasts like Aunt Eirini?” She threw her lip out a little in a small pout. She hoped he didn’t. She wasn’t entirely sure that she was capable of realistically filling herself out quite that much.
Twisting just a little to show off her new, um… , curvy figure to her cousin. She thrust her makeshift breasts out and put her hands on her curveless hips. “You know, it’d be so much easier if I could just lock him in a stall in the stable until he decided to love me… Do you think anyone would notice?”
Walking over, she picked up an apple and examined it for a moment taking in the shape of it. It was evident she was briefly considering if it’d be a better choice then the rags she and Nana had borrowed to help with this ploy the two of them were working on. Of course, Evie hoped that Lord Nikos noticed her, but if he chose Nana then she’d be almost as happy for the two of them. There was one thing for sure though, Lord Nikos would leave today with not only a new horse for the circus but totally and completely smitten with one of them. Maybe he’d even be so smitten with her, he’d ask her if he could have one of her ribbons to take with him to the races. Wouldn’t that be the most amazing thing?
Her fingers flexed around the apple and she swiveled to look at Nana again. “We should probably hurry up, he’ll probably be here soon enough… I know that Papa has already disappeared which can only mean he’s avoiding Lord Nikos.” She rolled her eyes a little, he was just going to have to get used to the idea of Lord Nikos around. “Do you think apples would work better… they are kind of similar in shape?” As if to prove a point she held it up to her makeshift breast and turned for Nana to offer her opinion.

Two highborn girls found comfort under a large tree, which provided shade thanks to the abundant amount of leaves it supplied for them. The amount of wealth their family and royal House possessed wasn't enough to halt their gauche appearances, they were both unaware that their appearances grew overtime for they both thought that their bodies and faces would stay glued to them forever. It was 681 B.C. in the cloudless month of Teleos, a month where both of the girls by the name of Evangelina and Nana cared less about becoming decent noblewomen... Unless a particular male was around, of course. Nana's sister and Evangelina's cousins were the most beautiful women in Taengea, according to their family members and the public. Selene was a beautiful woman of twenty, with long blonde hair past her shoulders and eyes of blue. Theodora and Olympia, both seventeen and sixteen, had darker hair and different eye colors that compliment their gleaming dark locks. Meanwhile, Nana's hair was a cross between brown and blonde and her eyes shone a murky brown along with her... eyebrows. Oh her eyebrows! Unlike her older sisters' thin ones, the Gods made a mockery and filled hers out! No matter how many times she's plucked those shaggy pests, it grew overnight. It felt like a curse, almost as if the deities refused to let go of their inside joke, so instead of plucking she just wore it out with different chitons to match.
Her chiton failed to match, because she used her dyed bedsheets instead of the ones the slaves made for her. On that Teleos day, she wore blue for the top with an ivory belt to pull the bedsheets together and a red comforter that served as a small 'dress'. One side of her hair was in a low braid, whilst the other was left alone, it looked as if a seven year old had done her hair. The twelve year old girl refused each and any slave to dress and fuss with her hair, she preferred to do everything on her own due to the supposed curse the Gods had placed on her. Anytime something bad happened to her, she blamed the 'curse', and now she pinned the blame on them for this... Crazy itch she's been having on her scalp.
Reaching up, the naive girl's nails scraped at her swollen scalp as she watched the foals and horses play together on her cousin's fields outside of the Acharist Manor. The grass tickled at their legs as they both sat, chattering away about their wishes to grow up faster and Lord Nikos of Condos. Nana couldn't help but envy Evie for having a little brother, boys were mighty ugly when they were little so a girl would have nothing to worry about when it came to her looks. But she did understand that boys gained significance for being boys, so Evie's parents and Lord Fotios made Konstantino feel like the most fair child in Greece while leaving their daughter to herself. It didn't seem fair to Nana, so she asked Evie to be her sister and their kinship grew and grew. Sure she had sisters that were prettier than she was, but she was all the more grateful to share her awkward looks with another inelegant girl such as Evie. There was Imma too, but Imma was starting to look more like Selene everyday. The second youngest tries her hardest to stop that from happening, by poking fun at the youngest's looks and artistic talent to her face, but that doesn't seem to take effect. Darn the curse!
"More rags? Aunt Eirini?" Nana asked, countering the brunette's inquiry with another. "I think so! Although, I do remember seeing Lady Floros at my manor trying to run towards one of our horses and it looked as if her breasts were about to spill from her peplos! The stablehands couldn't stop looking, yet Lord Nikos is unlike any other man." The girls held high beliefs towards the Lord of House Condos, a House renowned for the delicious wines. Nana's favorite was the one Lord Nikos liked, even if it is a bitter one she'd still like it. Shaking her head, she grabbed the rags and leaned over to shove them down Evie's chiton. "But just in case he acts like an animal, you'll have these to protect you! Just in case!" Even though they both loved Nikos, the other Leventi wasn't one to sabotage her sister's chances with him. Well, not subtly anyway. Lord Nikos wasn't like any other man, right?
Nana pursed her lips together to abstain from laughter as Evie twisted around to show her newer chest. The corners of her lips lifted as if to show a smile, a smile to prevent herself from laughing. "I know his sister would notice," She replied, adding an eyeroll at the mere mention of Lady Ophelia. "Ophelia always try to hover over us when he's around, what a blabber er, the nerve of her!" The older sister of their shared lover would stop by and ask if he had hurt them or said anything distasteful to them, especially when the only distasteful thing was her presence! "Besides, if you locked him in the stables, I'd have to be there! He loves me too, you know." In her daft mind, the girl with hair the color of dark gold thought that both her and Evie would share Nikos, only Nikos would like her a bit more.. Hopefully, the mean deities wouldn't stop that from happening.
As Evie stood and plucked an apple from the tree, Nana rose from her spot and did the same, thinking it was time to feed the mischievous foals. Yet her cousin had another idea in mind. "Pfft, why doesn't your father like him? We'll both have to marry him when we turn fifteen," She was counting down the days for the shared marriage. "He'll have to get over it. Does Tino like him?"
Her brown eyes widened as the apples were held to her cousin's chest, she picked another from the tree and stuffed it in her chiton before sauntering over. Soon, the foals heard another apple being plucked from the tree, their sharp minds able to tell when it was time to snack; only one was brave enough to amble towards the girls. "Yes, here, I'll do it for you!" Nana said, attempting to take two more apples from a branch with each step taken. As she placed both of them under Evie's slip, a deep and familiar voice called out to them.
"Why, if it isn't my two favorite ladies!"
Alarmed, the foal and another charged past the handsome older man to whom the voice belonged to and galloped over to the girls. As they made it over, one nudged it's head under Nana's 'chest' and both apples flew up and hit her chin. "OW! NO!!!!!" She cried, unprepared for the attack as the two fruits rose up and one flew down towards Evie's ear. Another foal would attempt to nudge the apples from Evie's slip...

She cried, unprepared for the attack as the two fruits rose up and one flew down towards Evie's ear. Another foal would attempt to nudge the apples from Evie's slip...
“Do stop fussing with your hair!” Evie mumbled, her own fingers reaching up to scratch her head too. All that she’d had to see was Nana scratching and suddenly her own head was beginning to itch. Head itching seemed to be as contagious as yawning was. "You are making mine itch too..."
‘More rags? Aunt Eirini?’
It really wasn’t an answer. Evangelina contemplated it curiously. Cici and Theo weren’t the only beautiful women, from Evie’s earliest memories their Aunt Eirini had always been the sort of woman that men crumpled onto the floor to worship her feet. Her first memory of Eirini was believing that she was Aphrodite. It had busted her bubble to be told it was simply her Aunt Eirini.
‘I think so! Although, I do remember seeing Lady Floros at my manor trying to run towards one of our horses and it looked as if her breasts were about to spill from her peplos! The stablehands couldn't stop looking, yet Lord Nikos is unlike any other man.’ Nana always noticed these sorts of things. Evie remembered seeing Lady Floros, briefly but she’d been more curious as to see which of the horses was chosen for the society lady. A giggle escaped Evie. “Ewww… Lady Floros?” Her nose scrunched up at the thought of men drooling over her. She seemed entirely tasteless the times that Evie had seen her. “I should hope, Lord Nikos does not lean that particular direction. Surely not! That woman is the worst…”
Evie adjusted the rags again, they seemed a little lumpy and… Oh dear, there was a rag hanging out from under her arm. That would never do. She fussed with it but it didn’t help, in fact, it seemed to make it worse. If that was possible?! ‘But just in case he acts like an animal, you'll have these to protect you! Just in case!’ Evie’s head shot up and she stared at Nana then laughed. “Oh, I don’t think I’d mind at all…,” Her cheeks pinked a little. She quickly added, “But I hardly doubt a man with such sophisticated and delicate tastes would ever revert to such behaviors…”
Narrowing her dark eyes at her sisterly cousin, she tried to look menacing as Nana giggled while looking at the makeshift bust that Evie had manufactured out of rags. A quick glance down and she noticed one side was lopsided. She currently had one makeshift bust that was located under her arm. Frowning, she re-adjusted it again. This was turning out harder than she’d realized it was going to be. Maybe this is what they’d meant when they’d said that beauty was a pain. Or was it that beauty was pain? Either honestly seemed like a possibility right now.
‘I know his sister would notice. Ophelia always try to hover over us when he's around, what a blabberer, the nerve of her!’ Evangelina didn’t miss the eye roll, she smiled and rolled her own eyes. As a girl with a brother, she knew how easy it was to want to interfere in their day to day lives. Lady Ophelia simply didn’t understand her brother at all… at least not the way that Nana and she did. “If Ophelia wasn’t his sister she’d probably be just like us. Konstantinos is always doing terrible things to me too… I think it’s just something that brothers do.” She had to laugh at the stable remark from Nana. “Think about it this way, if he were locked in the stables though… we could keep him to ourselves. Lady Floros wouldn’t poke his eyes out when she asked him for another riding lesson.”
Picking the apple it was obvious, she was a moment of contemplating. Her bottom lip caught between her teeth as she considered the possibilities with it. She understood her family’s dislike for the Condos family. They were forever interfering in trade matters, but that was not Lord Nikos. He wasn’t that much older than they were. Only eight years… That… That really wasn’t that long.
“Papa thinks he’s a bad influence, of course. He still sees me as a little girl and Lord Nikos is well… a bit more experienced then we are.” Glancing to Nana she smiled cheekily, “But I think that is a good thing. A girl’s first lover should be experienced. That’s what the milkmaid said when I heard her talking to the girl who collects the laundry to be done.” She didn’t quite understand the mechanics of making love. She’d seen horses do it and various other animals but it didn’t really look like the things she’d people doing when they were snuggled up kissing. Not that her parents knew she’d seen anything the couple of times she’d visited her cousins at court. She’d quietly left those details out in the retelling of her adventures. Biting her lip again, she shrugged. “Tino likes everyone who’s nice to him.”
Nana stood, plucking an apple from the tree. ‘Yes, here, I'll do it for you!’ Soon enough, Nana’s hands were rearranging her now apple shaped bust. They still didn’t look quite right. Her hand readjusted one of them and she frowned. “Hmm… I am not sure these are…”
Her words died off when the silky masculine voice, the one she heard in her dreams said. ‘Why, if it isn't my two favorite ladies!’ She froze suddenly feeling like a deer trapped in the sights of a hunter. When had he arrived? How had she not known?
She’d been so lost staring at the man who’d spoken, who had said they were his favorite ladies that she was taken by surprise when an apple popped out from Nana’s chiton. Eyes wide she looked from Nana to Nikos and back again. This wasn’t part of their plan. They were going to amaze him.
The colt that had been approaching Evie, spun around at the yelp from Nana and galloped off. Her gaze only briefly flitted to the foal before back to Nikos. She tried to smile. It wavered. “Lord Nikos.” It came out in a squeak. “You startled us.”
He bent and picked up the apple that had popped out of Nana’s bust, examined it, and took a bite out of it. Smiling at the girls. Evie was sure she was going to swoon. She glanced at Nana then back at Nikos, feeling suddenly giddy and hardly noticing that her own bust had become quite lopsided.
“What secrets are we talking about today, my ladies? You two have the look of two sirens preparing to lure a man into the depths of the sea. Which poor fellow is he? And what are these secrets?!” Nikos smirked, his eyes full of laughter. More at the girls than with the girls, not that the girls would notice at all.
Evie giggled and looked to Nana, “We’d never keep secrets from you, Nikos.”

Evie giggled and looked to Nana, “We’d never keep secrets from you, Nikos.”
Nana's refusal to stop picking at her scalp reversed itself into a loud groan towards Evie's plea, her nails scraping the flakes falling from her flesh and landing on top of her makeshift 'chiton'. She winced as her sharp nails reached a small aching sore at the top, her fingers curled into a fist so the knuckles could rub over the sore to resume further itching. Now which mischievous deity drop the vexing sore? Was it Hermes applying salt on open wounds? Couldn't they all knock it off for once? First the hair, then the eyebrows, and now the hair again? Well, no matter how many curses the Gods would throw at her, she wasn't going to cry! With a sharp inhale, she purses her lips tightly in an attempt to prevent herself from sobbing whilst continuing to scratch-- no rub her hair instead.
"Uh-huh!" Nana confirmed, reassuring that Evangelina had heard correctly. The Lady Floros was a peasant woman in Macdenia who borrowed their horses to model for miniature horse figurines that she sold in the Agorá, she was someone who was enthusiastic about horses but had a quick temper when others focused on her chest area rather than her eyes. The noble lady of twelve felt little to no pity for the woman, feeling that she should be grateful that people are even looking at her! Even if it was in adoration. She wondered what it was like for someone to look at you with admiration or adoration in their eyes, although both emotions were the same to her. "Right!? Lord Nikos is clever, handsome, clean, and witty! Which is why he is the perfect match for girls like us, he'd never fall for her," She removed her hands from her hair and started picking under her nails, smoothing the dirt on the bedsheet that served as a skirt. "Plus, only stupid boys fall for large breasts and that's... half of the Taengean noblemen AND scholars that ogle at Aunt Eirini's."
Not realizing that she stuffed more rags than her cousin's chiton could hold, she continued poking and prodding to make sure that Evie looked 'shapely' enough. Her brown eyes shot up once her cousin claimed she didn't mind, and a small smile crept over Nana's lips over that, relieved that her cousin also didn't mind any attention. Such confidence would work out in both of their favors during hers and Evie's wedding, everyone would stare after all, they would both be wed to the same person which was extremely rare in Taengea. Still, Nikos of Condos was a man although not a stupid man, still a man. "Lord Nikos is still a man and most are at risk for stupidity," An overprotective attitude took over as she tucked in the remaining rag, but was quickly shadowed by sheer optimism. "Hopefully you're right! Hm, do you think Lord Nikos is Dionysus in the flesh? He could be a God with all his wiles and charm-- a nicer God." Did nicer Gods exist? Or did they all bring forth unfair curses?
A quick readjustment by Evie hadn't gone unnoticed by Nana, who placed her hand over her heart and tilted her head shaking it sideways, indicating that she was grateful that her 'sister' was able to cover up what she missed. On the topic of the galling Ophelia, the Leventi girl listened intently to her equal who knew more about having a brother than she did. Evie's intelligent observation did reinforce her 'Men are stupid' idea and it made her more than satisfied that she was correct. But Ophelia being on guard over Lord Nikos? It was absurd, because they were not kin to the House of Condos so it doesn't really add up. "I still think she should keep her nose out of our business," The girl replied, grimacing at the mention of Ophelia. "You and Selene are much better sisters than she is to Lord Nikos, with the way she's going I'll reckon she'll be a spinster forever!" And a scheme was brought forth. "Once we rule House Condos- urm with Lord Nikos, we'll have to marry her off quickly, yes?" In regards to locking Lord Nikos in the stable with them, she laughed and nodded in agreement.
A mocking cry erupted from the inelegant adolescent, clicking her tongue as she rubbed the apple she picked on her crust-covered lower 'chiton'. "A little girl, he says!? Next time, tell him you're a woman now," Encouraged the young lady, shaking her head as her sisterly cousin picked another apple. "It stuns my father to silence when I do that, but I only do it when-" Her eyes lowered to the apple, scratching at her scalp once more. "--When mother's not around?" Nana prefered her father's soft-spoken voice aside from her mother's demanding one. Her father could be stern at times, but was a bit meek and daft compared to his brothers which also helped reinforce the younger girl's opinion about men. She perked up in no time, "The milkmaid is right! We deserve men not boys!" And with that, she fussed with the apples in her and Evie's chiton, rolling her eyes at the commend concerning Konstantinos.
Once the famed Lord Nikos arrived, two foals ran amock and caused havoc amongst the girls and their 'future husband'! The apple previously stuffed under her 'chiton' bounced against her chin and rolled over the green pasture. The girl with messy dark blonde hair wanted to curse the Gods for cursing her- until the Lord of Condos picked up the apple and... took a bite. Nana held her breath, her hands over her the rags spilling from her upper 'chiton' had gone unnoticed as she turned to Evie with wide eyes and a ragged breath.
He asked for their secrets in a powerful and poetic way, it almost made Nana feel faint and collapse on the spot. She placed her hand on her cousin's shoulder for support, patting it in reassurance to her answer. "Yes, we'd never keep anything from you!" She added with a smile, flipping her messy brade over her right shoulder. "But... I- I mean we're wondering if you'd do the same for us, Nikki?" It was a new nickname she thought of exactly on the spot, hopefully he'd like it; because it was a name she would always use once all three of them were together. Always.

Caught between repulsion and the urge to reach up and scratch her own head too, Evangelina couldn’t her gaze away from Nana. Evangelina’s upper lip curled a little and she tilted her head just a little further away from her cousin as she proceeded to itch her head. Her mother would have an absolute fit if it turned out to be another case of head bugs. Not that Evie herself wanted to have to deal with that… It wasn’t that she was a fussy little girl, most days she was covered in horse hair in the special black grime that came from scratching the horses. But she drew the line at her head itching the way it had last time. Once was enough for the slightly older girl.
The sharp inhale of her cousin and the wince of pain was enough to break the spell and cause the darker haired Leventi to inch away from Nana. At the mention of Lord Nikos attributes, Evie shot a sharp glance at Nana with the word clean. She blinked a couple of times and looked down.
“I thought everyone ogled Aunt Eirini. My mother says, that Aunt Eirini attracts the wrong sort of attention but I wonder if the wrong sort of attention isn’t better then no attention at all.” Evangelina muttered and looked down at her own paltry bust filled to the brim with rags. An exasperated sigh escaped, they weren’t right at all. As Nana stuffed them in the front, Evie pulled the excess out at the sides. She just would never look like their curvacious aunt. She listened to Nana, nodding her head. Nana had things so figured out, she was so sure about what she thought. Perhaps that happened when you had three grown sisters just older than you. Being the eldest of her family though, and having a brother… Evie felt the absence a bit keener.
At the mention of Nikos being Dionysus in the flesh had Evie’s dark eyes staring at Nana again. She hoped not. Evangelina was fairly certain that she wanted a quiet life. Dionysus’ wasn’t exactly the right God for a quiet life. He was God of wine and parties and so on. Evie wasn’t sure she wanted to be the hostess to Dionysus in the flesh’s parties. That sounded… like she would be setting herself up to fail and Evie didn’t do that. If she did something she did it to win… and if that meant she picked her battles carefully… then she’d lose a battle or two to sacrifice it for the good of the war.
It was easy to let Nana chatter away, that was the way of their relationship for the most part. Nana chattered happily away and Evie listened and then the two took turns dragging the other into trouble. Giving a soft nod of her head, she examined the apples again.
“Mmm.” Evie murmured in agreement. “I doubt such a comment would ruffle father, but I doubt it would baffle him..” In fact, she knew it wouldn’t baffle him. It wasn’t the first time that Nana had suggested Evie repeat something and the last time she’d repeated something that Nana had told her to her father… her father had stared at her for a couple of moments and then told her to be careful who’s advice she took.
Those dark eyes of Evangelina’s were drawn back to Nana’s hand reaching up to her head and scratching again. Seeing the tiny opaque flakes fall from Nana’s head and Evie reeled backward softly. Oh, please… don’t let it be bugs again. Please don’t let it… She cringed. Please. Please. Please…
“I…” She’d been about to say something about men and boys but Nana’s flakes caused her mind to go blank. “Nana!” She yelped pleadingly. “My mother is going to kill us if that’s bugs again.”
Lord Nikos had appeared before any further discussion could be had on the possibility of bugs. Evie’s arms came up to wiggle one of the apples back into place… except it wasn’t going back to the right place. With a wobbly smile, she tried to cross her arms over her chest half in an attempt to hide the lopsided apples in place and half to hold them from shifting further.
He picked Nana’s apple up and took a bite out of it and Evie’s breath hitched. Blood started pooling in her cheeks as she turned several shades of red. Her mouth hung open a little as she stared up at him wanting to say something but her brain didn’t seem capable of forming words let alone sentences or even something similar to normal conversation. Her barefoot dug into the dirt, she’d discarded her sandals earlier… shoes were a nuisance and she could hardly ever wait to be rid of them every opportunity that she could.
Nana was quick to agree to tell him her secrets and a moment of panic flowed from Evie. No. Panic-stricken dark eyes tried to catch Nana’s eyes and as she tried to send silent signals to her cousin to keep her big fat mouth closed. Nana. No. No, Nana. Her lips moved and her teeth gnashed silently until Lord Nikos turned his dreamy gaze onto her and she tried to offer a wavering smile.
“Come now, darling Evangelina….” He smiled wolfishly and repeated her name a bit breathlessly. “Evangelina.” Sighing, he grinned at her and her toes curled. “That is such a pretty name...such a fitting name for you.” Her top teeth caught the bottom of her lip and she fought a tremble. Had he just said she was pretty?
His gaze flickered around them, “What sort of man do you think I am?” He looked aghast… or that’s what it would have looked like to the two love-stricken girls. “Gentlemen never kiss and tell, ladies.” He slid a cheeky wink to Nana at the usage of the nickname. “But if I weren’t a gentleman, I’d tell you every little secret of my heart.” Nikos took another bite of the apple, some of the juice seeping out of the corner of his mouth as he wiped it away with his thumb and licked it off his thumb.
Evie just stared. He was so fascinating. Her mouth opened just a little, her wide eyes blinking.
“So, did your sisters come with you, my lady.” His gaze seemed to be looking beyond them but the question could only have been directed to Nana. Evie bit her bottom lip a little harder to keep her focused on the here and now. Why couldn’t she say something instead of just standing there blinking like the village idiot at him?

Caught between repulsion and the urge to reach up and scratch her own head too, Evangelina couldn’t her gaze away from Nana. Evangelina’s upper lip curled a little and she tilted her head just a little further away from her cousin as she proceeded to itch her head. Her mother would have an absolute fit if it turned out to be another case of head bugs.
