I am glad that I was there for the festivities, for I do not know if hearing about it would have been quite as amazing. I am sorry for having to leave the arena without notice. I was not expecting for it to affect me as it did, and I did not want to embarrass your family by my actions. Believe me when I say that I am quite well now, coming up with better ways to deal with it.
As for the Crown Prince, I am well aware of his reputation, for it proceeds him more than I think he even knows. But I find myself looking beyond the death he has brought and trying to look at the why. I mean, his deadly actions saved my sister. And while no one ever wishes for death upon anyone, I believe that he does what he must. War is a part of life, my dear. If you wished to find a man who has not killed, you would find yourself dying from old age unmarried.
He is kind and thoughtful in his actions, although he does not accept my insistence on this as fact. Prince Vangelis has only done what was necessary to maintain the peace within his kingdom, and while it has not been a pretty job, he has done so with honor. Perhaps it is hard for us to wrap our heads around, as we have no real concept of what it is like to take a life for the good of our kingdoms. But as rough as he may seem, he is just as considerate. I am finding him to be a good friend, one who is an effective leader and a loving brother.
Do not worry, I won’t let his serious disposition effect my own.
My uncle did not specify the reason why the servants were unable to open the house. Perhaps a plague has wiped out half the staff. Or that a section of it has burned to the ground. I dare not ask him the reason, for I do not truly understand what goes into opening up a house. Perhaps it had been empty for quite some time, and they need more than a few days to prepare it. Or perhaps there is just laziness to it, and they don’t want to put forth the effort. Whatever the reason, I don’t question my uncle. I am to be leaving in a few days anyway, so it won’t matter after that. I did have the opportunity to assist in the relief efforts after their destroyed harbor and was humbled by what the people can do with so little.
I am glad that your sister is to find herself so well matched. She is a strong ruler, and I truly look forward to hearing what happens in the next few weeks. As for me, I find far too much enjoyment in riding and music. Most of my free time is spent in the music room of my home, dedicated specifically to the harp. I find much joy in spending time with my sisters and cousins as well. We all are close in age, and that means that we are often together.
Once I am home, we will be planning a wedding, (or maybe two!). Theodora is to marry Achilleas, so it looks like we both have something to look forward to!
I must go, for the young Princess Athanasia has asked me to teach her to ride, and I only have a few days left in which to do so. May the Gods protect you, sweetest sister in my heart. Please do keep me informed as to the upcoming Senate gathering. And I look forward to hearing more about the wedding plans. I shall write to you once I am home, for I am sure I will have much to share with you in my next letter.
Most fondly yours,
Selene
