Hitting him was like hitting a stone wall, she grimaced as her hand made contact with his contracted stomach. He’d known she was going to hit. It was obvious. Her hand hurt now, and she didn’t feel a bit better than she had moments earlier.
Dysmas spoke of the things that he thought she deserved, of the regard he held for… of the love he had for her, admitted he’d marry her if she’d have him.
She stood there, her back to him as the tears fell silently down her cheek. Processing his words, she tried not to over think them. It’d be so nice if she could just accept them for being what they were.
When he spoke again his words were eerily calm and quiet. He was leaving and his parting remark was like a kick to the gut.
“That’s your truth, Dys. Not mine.” Evangelina spoke up, her still voice cutting through the silence between them. “Why am I so deserving of happiness and a life surrounded by love and you are not, huh?”
Turning around, she crossed her arms over her chest and stared at him.
“Why do you always do what I tell you to do?” She brushed a tear off her cheek with the back of her hand. “I am not deserving, Dysmas. Don’t put me on some sort of pedestal… Can’t you see that I am trying to save you from me? It’s not the other way around.” She caught her bottom lip between her teeth and shook her head, a bitter laugh huffed out and she rolled her eyes, “You could do so much better than me… So yes, run… don’t walk out that door.”

That was a harder punch than she ever could have thrown at him: he wanted to give her all of his adoration and she threw it back in his face. She was willing to accept his feelings for her, but didn’t have any to offer him in return. He felt himself pale at the realization of how completely wrong he was about all the flirting and looks, and everything in between.
So this was a broken heart? Mm.
“...being with you is what would make me happy…” he said quietly. He didn’t love her for her house or her titles. He cared about the clumsy, sweet, stubborn girl underneath all that. Why could she not understand that was why he put her on a pedestal and that was why he did everything he was told. She made him happy, pleasing her pleased him.
Maybe he really would just give up all his lands and titles and just become a bean farmer…

...being with you is what would make me happy…’
Why had she never figured that out? Why hadn’t she told him she felt the same way about him. Forever would never have been long enough for her. Her gaze took in every crease of his face, every curve of his jaw. He was beautiful, inside and out. She could search the world from south to north but she’d already found what she was looking for. Every time he smiled or told one of those terrible jokes she knew why she was here. Where ever she went, whatever she did the fact was she was born to love him.
She’d been such a silly little idiot. He was what she wanted, every piece of him. He was hers.
Reaching out, her fingers grabbed him. She tried to be noble, hoped that he would find someone better suited for him. Someone good, someone that would never disappoint him. She’d tried. But she wasn’t good… despite what he thought. She knew that truth. If she’d been a good person, she’d have let him go. If she’d been a good person, she wouldn’t have reached out grasping at him.
“Don’t leave me.” Evangelina’s dark eyes looked up at him and her bottom lip quivered.
What she did next surprised even herself. She dropped to the floor next to his feet, something she’d told him once she didn’t do. Kneeling on her knees at his feet she looked up at him again. “Don’t leave me… please… don’t. Marry me.” Her voice wobbled, her cheeks were still tear-stained but her dark eyes were searching his face again. “I’ve never been that girl that makes men fall at her feet. I am selfish and clumsy. I set my dresses on fire and I throw things when I am angry. I do things my own way and I’ll be a terrible wife. I’ll lose our children and never be on time.” She paused, smiled a little sadly. “I’ll still be that girl if you marry me… I can’t be someone else, as much as I wish I could… as much as I think you deserve a different sort of girl I can’t be that but with you… with you, I am more than I am. You touch me and I am better. So please, don’t leave me… marry me… make me better.”
She tried to look hopeful. Evie knew she’d screwed this up already beyond repair, but she wanted to hope that he would see her… he’d understand what she’d been trying to do. “I love you so much, Dys. Marry me and we can be bean farmers together? Don't leave me though, never leave me...”

Dysmas couldn’t stand the sight of her on her knees practically begging him to stay -- to marry her. He couldn’t understand what had changed her mind, but Dysmas had always known that women were complex creatures. Evie was no exception to that.
He gently took her hands into his own and guided her back to her feet, his blue eyes looking down at her tearful face. He just wanted a quiet moment to stare into her eyes; through them show her his compassion and devotion to her. “You never saw a man fall at your feet because they were too busy flying in the sky at your mere presence.” He said, a small smile finally finding his features, “I don’t want another girl, Evie. I want you. As you are. As my wife. I’ll find our children. We will only be late sometimes. I’ll never leave you unless you tell me to.”
His hands slowly moved from her hands to her sides, pulling her petite frame closer to him. “And I’ll marry you only under one condition.”
Dysmas left a pause, getting another good look at her face before his teasing grin spread across his own.
“You have to promise me you’ll actually go through with it?”
He was only teasing her given her current track record with weddings wasn’t exactly great so far -- she was kind of supposed to be getting married right now.

Even with the help of his hand, Evie still almost tottered over sideways rising back to her feet. Her face scrunched up as she flailed for a moment then found her center again. Maybe he wouldn’t notice her lack of grace? Wait… She’d just admitted she was clumsy… Evangelina would have continued that train of thought except for the way he was looking down at her.
Could she hope?
Her bottom lip was captured by her teeth as she stared back up at him. She could stare at him every day for the next hundred years. He still held her hands, could he tell she was nervous by the way they trembled in his?
‘You never saw a man fall at your feet because they were too busy flying in the sky at your mere presence.’ She blinked at him, did that mean…? Her breathing stopped. He smiled at her. Did he know how wrapped around his little finger she was? The things she would do for him if he only asked. ‘I don’t want another girl, Evie. I want you. As you are. As my wife. I’ll find our children. We will only be late sometimes. I’ll never leave you unless you tell me to.’
“Gods. You are too good for me.” Her quiet whisper breathed out on her exhale. It was a good thing he pulled her closer, if he hadn’t he might have noticed that she crumpled a little at his words. Wrapping her arms around him, she braced her limp form against him and buried her face into his chest. What would she have done had he walked out that door? It was an easy answer. She’d have died. Curled up and died. Her will to keep going would have vanished.
‘And I’ll marry you only under one condition.’ Pulling her head back, she met his gaze. What was that one condition? His wish was her command. His lips parted into a smile that hit her in the pit of her stomach. Anything. Anything is yours….
‘You have to promise me you’ll actually go through with it?’ She blinked again before she tilted her head back, a throaty laugh escaping.
“I wish there was a word for the way that I love you.” She murmured quietly to him, her eyes gleaming with happiness. Reaching up, her hand came to brush her thumb across his cheek. “Done. Are you sure that is your only condition?”

He had the stupidest, dopiest grin on his face as he held her body pressed against his own. There were no words to describe the pure sense of sheer elation he felt at having her in his arms and knowing she was going to be his wife. Her fingers were cool against his face, and he gave a quick thought when she gave him the opportunity to add conditions.
“Hmm. I can’t think of any right now, but I’m sure I could come up with a few more if you’d like?”
He felt so drawn in by her. Dysmas could feel himself leaning down toward her face with every intention of finally kissing those plump lips he’d seen her bite on more than one occasion; a kiss that was long overdue.
But it would have to wait longer.
The door flew open, interrupting their sweet moment with a loud shout from a very angry groom. Dysmas spun around, hiding his now-fiance behind him to defend her from any harm. He had his hands readied on the hilts of the short swords hanging from his sides, prepared to draw at any moment.

Anything. It’s yours.” Complete adoration glowed in her eyes as she looked up at him. Her gaze held his eyes for several heartbeats and then slowly dropped to his mouth. Following her gaze, her thumb took the liberty to drift down to it grazing it gently. “Everything is yours as long as you’ll have me.”
He started to lean down into her and she felt herself melting against him. Her hand started to slide to the back of his neck. Her eyes closed as she lost herself in the moment. It was perfect. He was perfect.
Bang! The door to the room busted open.
Evangelina all but climbed Dysmas like a ladder when you found out the floor underneath you was on fire. Her head spun around and she saw one very irate groom glowering at them and Byrony standing behind him looking a shocked and uncertain of whether to take off screaming for help or if she should close the door for whatever event was about to take place. She went with the first one, albeit without the screaming.
Dysmas stepped in front of her, nobly trying to block her from view of the furious groom as he pointed a finger at Dysmas. “I knew you were trouble. I told her…. I told the entire family you shouldn’t have been invited.”
Evie felt her head pop up from around Dysmas’ backside and effectively drew the attention of her the fishy looking groom away from Dysmas as he glowered at her. “Did you think you could just ‘cry’ off this wedding? That’s not going to happen. We will be married, Lady Evangelina. I refuse to be humiliated by this… this…” His gaze shifted as he looked Dysmas up and down and waved his hand, “This oversized Athenian.”
Dysmas would be able to feel her fingers digging into the clothing on his back to keep from launching herself at Groom # 1 and scratching his eyes out.
“Hey! Hey, you don’t get to insult him like that… do you understand me! I’ll… I’ll..” Evie growled, unfortunately, her anger only seemed to feed the jilted groom and he threw his head back, a sharp laugh escaping at her failed threats. In an instant, Evie was lurching forward past Dysmas. “I’ve had just about enough of you… you’ve been getting on my nerves since we met.” Her hands were outstretched prepared to grab her jilted groom and shred him to pieces.

Over-sized Athenian? Well. He’d been called worse before. He could feel Evie’s nails digging into his back. There was something oddly comforting about the sensation as it reminded him she was safe and he would keep her that way.
Unfortunately, the sick, mocking laughter from the other man seemed to have put Evie’s anger over the edge. Gods. If she got hurt before he had a chance to marry her, he would be deeply sorrowful. But then… he should have expected Evie wouldn’t idly stand by while his honor was called into question.
She lunged from her place of safety, ready to gouge out the man’s eyes for such an infraction. Dysmas wasn’t going to let her engage him. She was unarmed and he was an honorless thug. Dysmas’s quick-reflexes came in, nabbing his would-be-wife around her waist and pulling her over to the window, a sword now drawn.
“Ey man. One groom to another?” Dysmas jeered behind him, “Work on your insults.”
The intention to jump out the window would be obvious to Evie given Dysmas’s current posture.

he was so close, she could almost feel her fingernails digging into that cad's face. Evangelina of Leventi did not let anyone insult the honor of those she loved. He'd pay for it! She was going to...
Hey, wait! Something. No someone had a hold of her. Glancing down, she saw Dysmas arm wrapping around her waist to keep her from getting any closer to the jilted groom. A part of her was spitting nails that he'd intervene in the demise of her former groom. But a larger part of her felt a wave of tenderness wash over her that he was trying to protect her. Blast it all to Hades though! She was going to protect him and as such, she wiggled about trying to get free of his grip.
Evangelina had to hand it to Dysmas, despite her best wiggling she'd not managed to slip out of his grasp... and in fact, he had managed to about half carry and half drag her towards the window. She was getting further and further away from her mission. "Dysmas..." She squeaked out the groan, "I can take him... I've killed bigger bugs then him."
He seemed to be ignoring her though, his attention focused on the weasely former groom. Why had she thought he'd looked like a fish? He definitely looked more like a weasel. He smelled like a fish... That's what it... was...
His taunting caused the jilted grooms face to burn red but it didn't look like he had quite figured out yet that Dysmas was dragging her off to the window...
Wait... Window? Why were they going to the window? Window escapes didn't like her. Did he have any idea how many shutters she'd broken trying to climb out windows? Her legs were never long enough to straddle the window frame. This was a bad idea...
"Dys." She hissed quietly. "Dys." She hissed again. "Dysmas! Windows don't like me."

Window escapes may not have liked her, but Dysmas had a plan. His grip on her tightened, pulling her with him out the window as his sword dug into the side of the structure to break their fall. He let out a loud whistle, a familiar horse racing around the corner to meet them.
As Thyella ran, a pair of wings pushed out from the horse’s sides, allowing her to fly to them. She was a pegasi, though this was an incredible and new development that Dysmas found difficult to explain to… just about everyone. Fortunately Evie was already familiar with the story and he needn’t explain it to her mid-escape.
Thyella caught the two humans on her back, and Dysmas instructed his bride, “Hold on tight!”

She was tumbling out of the window before she knew what was actually happening. The small squeal erupted out of her and she closed her eyes tightly. She'd just gotten engaged to the man she loved. She didn't want to die. Her arms and legs wrapped around him as best they could hold on for dear life. "You're going to get us killed!" She fussed, burying her face into his clothing as she said it.
He let out a shrill whistle and she opened one eye to see a familiar face appear. Her other eye shot open when she saw the wings starting to emerge from the Leventi mare. What the fuck?! She blinked and wanted to rub her eyes, but wanted to cling to Dymas more. She settled for blinking her eyes a couple more times.
They landed upon the back of the Pegasus, and her arms wrapped around the back of Dysmas. Her face buried into his back now as he took hold of the reins. Her eyes went to her former groom, Byrony, and various family members standing at the window now watching what had unfolded from her wedding day.
Her arms squeezed Dysmas a little tighter, "Now that you've kidnapped the bride, where are we going to go. The world is yours..."

It was a majestic image, the sight of Dysmas and his stolen bride atop a pegasus soaring over the Taengean skies -- the bride’s lovely gown billowing in the breeze. He knew she had been worried, but he had the situation under control -- sort of.
Evie wrapped her arms around him tightly, and her next words caused his face to scrunch up a bit. “Uh.. you know I… didn’t actually think that part through?” he confessed.
The only thing he knew for a fact was he wanted to kiss her. He wanted to kiss her, hold her, touch her, live life with her...
___
662 BC, Apellaios
So Dysmas rolled over in his bed, torso exposed to the chill of the winter air and his eyes adjusting to the morning light drifting into the room. The figure of his heavily pregnant wife lay beside him, and he snuggled himself in closer to her. He wasn’t as young as he was in dreamland, but the lingering desires associated with her were still on his mind.
The lord nuzzled his face into her neck, waiting to discover if she was yet awake or not, tenderly kissing her soft skin.

]It'd be one of those nights that she'd not slept that much, the baby had spent all night bumping around in her pretending to be a pegasus flying through the sky. She sighed softly, their little pegasus. She had known what happiness, but Dysmas took every day to show her, remind her, of just how lucky she was.
He stirred behind her, a sleepy smile forming on her lips. His morning shadow scraped against her neck and she sighed softly again. His morning kisses were the best way to wake up, she pressed herself back against him and her hands reached to cover his and move them just a few inches lower on her belly to fell the active child.
"Mmm...Good Morning." She murmured, her voice still thick from sleep.

She was awake. Which probably meant she’d been up all night or in-and-out of sleep because of the baby. Her hands pulled his down lower on her swollen abdomen, and he couldn’t help a slightly croaky grumble from escaping him. It was good to know the baby was healthy and active, but it frustrated him somewhat that all the movement was keeping Evie from a good night’s rest.
He kissed her cheek. “Good morning. How long have you been awake?” Dysmas asked her sleepily with a small note of surprise when the baby issued a particularly strong kick under his hand.
Judging by how strong that last kick was, probably awhile. Why did that kid always have to be so active anytime Evie even tried to lay down. He gingerly rubbed the spot, thinking that one must have hurt the Mrs.
“Has this one,” the baby, “been keeping you up?” Dysmas placed another loving kiss on her exposed shoulder.

Surprisingly, Evie didn’t mind the baby’s activity even if it did interrupt her normal sleep patterns. There was a certain relief and happiness in knowing that their baby was thriving with them. Parenthood had terrified Evie. Half of the time, she never knew whether she was coming or going before she had children and afterward it had seemed even crazier. She wasn’t foolish enough to believe that she was the one that held everything together, Dysmas did. He always had. He was her solid rock, the only constant in her every changing chaotic lifestyle. He grounded her and in a way, he was undoubtedly her better half.
She hummed a pleased little noise in the back of her throat as he kissed her cheek and asked her how long she’d been awake.
“Long enough.” Her gravelly morning voice deflected. The child kicked again, and she wondered if it was possible to be black and blue in her abdomen from their little one… His hands were eager to soothe the soreness, and her eyes fluttered the rest of the way closed at the softness of his hands on her.
‘Has this one been keeping you up?’ His mouth found her naked shoulder and she smiled.
“Mmmm... “ She sighed, after not quite a decade of marriage, several children, the ups and downs of their life. He still made her heart swell and feel like she was about to burst into a thousand pieces of delight. “Only a little.” She lied, he’d know but she would downplay her lack of sleep, her back pain, and the fact that runny eggs still made her nauseous.
Wiggling out of his hands, she rolled over to face him and hitching a leg up on his for comfort. Wrapping her arms around, she pressed herself flush to him. “How did you sleep?” Pressing a kiss to his collarbone, “Have I told you this morning yet that waking up to you is the best thing ever?” With sleepy dark eyes, she tilted her head back and smiled up at him the adoration clear on her face. She took that moment to use her unusually dexterous toes and lightly pinch him on the back of his calf.
