The circus was always a place of uncertainty for Nikos. One could never be certain if the tables would turn in one's favor, if the tidal wave of thundering hooves would carry a man to victory or drown him in its dust.
As Nikos entered the empty arena, blanketed in the cool darkness of the early dawn, he inhaled the stench of the sweat and blood that had soaked into the packed dirt floor over generations of sporting. It was a familiar scent, a welcoming air of nostalgia that brought back memories of the many losses he had incurred here as a boy and a younger man. He could count his number of wins on one hand thanks to the work of Zacharias; only in the few instances when he was absent from a race did Nikos ever have a viable chance at victory. Although, since the Prince's death, coupled with the absence of Stephanos, he might actually stand to improve his rankings in the near future.
The thought of Zacharias and the subsequent tragedies that had befallen the Mikaelidas family since his death brought Nikos to a halt just outside the silent track. The death of Zenon and his son had occurred merely months before, but the whirlwind of battles, accusations, and escapes that followed had done nothing to cool the rising tensions that have befallen Taengea. It felt like years had passed since he last stepped foot in the rink, since the cheers rung out from the stands, since there was life in the arena. Arguably, the circus had morphed into some sort of hallowed grounds since the gruesome display of the royals' deaths, and it had remained mostly silent since the last cry of terror faded. Now only ghosts raced laps here, on the blood of Taengea's king and crown prince.
It wouldn't be long before the races resumed, however. It would be an understatement to claim that the senate had been preoccupied with much more pressing matters since Zenon's death than the organization of a race or festival in the very place that still reeked of death in the people's minds, but it was only a matter of time before these sentiments faded, stability was restored, and the ghosts of the past faded into wisps of memory. Their blood churn in the dust just as well as any of the men of the rink. They would not be the first nor the last to die here.
Nikos gripped the railing encircling the track and exhaled the breath he had been holding. The echoes of the past did not bother him; it's not like he had harbored amiable feelings for either man while they were alive, gods forbid his sentiments change since they had from departed the world of the living. It had been weeks, perhaps even a month since he had last held the reigns of his team, and a congenial challenge was precisely the way to ease back into a sense of normalcy.
He had arrived earlier than the meeting time of the missive had outlined, but he was eager to fit in a good warm-up and to meet his challenger. The note had arrived several days ago, proposing a friendly (perhaps even flirty) match between he and a mysterious fellow known only by his signature of L.E.. Nikos had accepted, of course, partially because he loved to race and partially because he couldn't resist the temptation of a bit of coquettish excitement. Lord Emilios, perhaps? That would be surprising, albeit it wouldn't be the first time he'd been caught off guard because of false assumptions. Or perhaps a foreigner, a secret admirer? Nikos allowed his thoughts to overtake him as his servants soon arrived with his team. The invitation made clear that this would be a friendly competition, so he dressed himself and his chariot plainly. A few ribbons here, a bit of gold there, not nearly as ornate as he would have dressed himself or his team if this were to be a real challenge. Besides, the less he had on, the easier it would be to "celebrate" after the race if it came down to it....
Nikos mounted his chariot and began a few laps around the track, slow and steady. He wanted his horses to be primed and ready by the time his opponent arrived. He had dismissed his servants, save for a couple that waited just outside the arena in the back to walk the team home afterwards. He wanted to be alone for the race.
He cleared his mind and settled into the steady rhythm of horse hooves thumping over the packed dirt as he awaited the arrival of his opponent, his only company being Helios as the morning glow began to spill over the walls of the arena, two chariots of gold chasing the ghosts of the past back into their shadows.

The silvery dawn was her favorite time of day, it wasn’t a surprise that Evangelina was there shortly after Nikos had arrived. Not giving herself away, she stood in the shadows watching him for a few minutes. Leaning against the wall of the tunnel that led into the grandstands she wondered if this had really been the best idea after all.
Her mind drifted and her eyes dropped to her feet. She could feel the need to be alone. This place had its share of ghosts. What was another one? She’d written the note, had worded it so that it would ensure he drug himself to their meeting. She’d wrote another one that morning and slipped it under Imma’s bedroom door on her way out. Asking her to meet her here at the circus when she awoke, to wear something beautiful, and to bring her sketching pencils.
That day that she’d gathered up her clothes and left him after their heated exchange she wasn’t sure she’d ever been able to forgive him but looking back she’d been young and it was her mistake to ever have trusted him with any part of her. She’d broken her own heart by putting her faith into someone she shouldn’t have. It hadn’t been a secret even then that he had been around.
Standing there watching him at that moment, it was clear she’d been the one to make the wrong turn. Taking a steeling breath of the morning air, she stepped from the shadows. The peacock blue chiton was pinned to accentuate her slender, feminine form. The mass of chestnut hair was piled loosely on top of her head and pinned there too. She moved slowly, walking to the railing that separated the circus from the grandstands.
Leaning on her forearms, she sighed and stared at the ground waiting for Nikos to notice that she was standing there. She dug the toe of her sandal into the ground. The morning light was changing the morning from silver to gold. Byrony lingered off behind her along with a guard, both obviously wishing Evangelina would stay in bed the normal hours of a young lady.
When she met his gaze, she rolled her eyes softly. It was too late to back out now. Her lips thinned and she felt her body stiffen as she raised her hand to wave him over. Imma could arrive at any time. As he drew closer, “Beautiful morning some friendly competition, no?” She smiled faintly and glanced over her shoulder to see reassure herself that Imma was lurking in the shadows yet, “I have a favor to ask of you.” Drawing her gaze back to Nikos she frowned a little. Did he know how tough those words were for her? “You owe me that at least.”

The circus. What could Evie had possibly wanted to do at the circus? It was the first question that had entered her mind when she’d found the note slipped beneath her door. The first but most certainly not the last. It didn’t take longer for her to deduce that he had to have had something to do with horses and from that point on she needed only to turn her mind’s eye a quarter inch to locate the justification for her request. Nikos. It was the only thing that made any bit of sense. Especially if she were to consider the addendum to her invitation. Wear something beautiful. The thought that their aforementioned game was about to begin had left the youngest of the Leventi brood bristled with excitement as she readied herself. Putting the utmost care in into her selection of wardrobe and the utilization of the accoutrements that would couple it.
Once she had the perfect ensemble chosen she had sat through the tortuous process of having her hair arranged. Allowing her maids to braid the fine strands of gold to cross over her crown four times over, interwoven with ivory strands of pearls. The bulk of her hair was secured at the back of her head, pinned just so to allow the pristine curls to rain down the length of her neck. The waterfall of supple ringlets complimented her choice of apparel. Tickling the band at her neck that held the material secure both at the front and back. Dappled with rose quartz crystals that had been bevelled and polished. The same crystals could be found at her waist, set into a diamond-shaped center that at either horizontal point attached to a metal hoop that encompassed her waist. The belt was a literal ring with no give to speak of, indenting the exposed flesh at her sides just enough to hint at the silkiness of the pale copper flesh.
Imma had turned at least a dozen times in front of the polished surface of metal that made up her mirror. Making certain that the overall image was one she could believe to be beautiful. In the end she’d decided she looked like a younger version of her eldest sister. Which surprised her more than she would ever admit. Selene was stunning and if she looked a bit like her then she could only believe she was similarly so. Once she was truly satisfied she left her room and made her way out only to catch her normal escort quite off guard. He was not at all used to her dressing the way she had or putting forth the kind of effort she seemingly had. Once he got past the awe of it he fell in line and provided her with what she needed. A safe transport from the estate to the circus.
Upon arrival she’d request he remain somewhere inconspicuous. Out of sight and out of mind as luck would have it. The last thing she wanted was for some bulky guard to disturb her fun. Eventually he agreed and she was free to explore the circus freely. It was early still and the circus seemed quite empty. Which for a moment made her wonder if perhaps she’d been wrong about her impression of Evie’s note. Though the closer she got to the heart of it, the easier it was to hear the faint beating of hooves. Smiling to herself she quickened her pace without thinking about it. Eager to see her cousin but also to make amends with the Lord Condos. Rounding another corner she caught the first glimpse she could of the pair, only to still her stride immediately after.
Keeping a place close to the corner she lifted a hand to brace herself. Folding her fingers gingerly against the wall as she watched them. Allowing her honey hued eyes to move from one to the other, taking in as much as she was able from a distance. There was still much she did not know of their relationship and she wanted to make quite certain that she was not entirely incorrect. If there seemed to be any indication from where she stood that there was still something between them, she might be better serving herself and them to sneak away before either of them spotted her. So she would watch and wait until the moment was right to make her presence known.

He didn't know how long he'd been there, how many laps his team had circuited the arena when streaks of morning gold began to illuminate the stands. The early dawn had morphed into late morning by now, but his mystery opponent still had yet to appear. It wasn't until Nikos pulled himself out of his thoughts and actively began searching the arena for any sign of his challenger that he spotted the shadowy figure watching him from just beyond the railing. Oh, checking out the competition, is he? He stood just a little bit straighter and gave his chest a slight puff as rounded the corner and drew closer to the figure, fully intent on showing his opponent just what he was up against. It wasn't until he began to slow his chariot to a stop that it became apparent that his observer wasn't the man he was looking for. Or, in this case, woman, and based on her dress she certainly wasn't here to race.
"Clever," Nikos purred as he heeded to her beckoning wave. He pasted a sly grin on his face as he stepped down from his post and approached the woman, dipping into a flourishing bow as he came to a halt in front of her. "I don't suppose you've come to watch me run in circles all morning, have you, Lady Evangelina?" He gripped the railing with both hands on either side of her arms, leaning over her and theatrically allowing his eyes to slowly trail over her figure-hugging attire, as though meaning to mentally undress her. "In fact, if I didn't know any better, I'd say you'd come dressed for another activity." He allowed his body to rock back to its natural standing position, and he listened in silence as she asked a "favor" of him. "Ohh, Evie." he drawled, leaning heavily into his interjection for the sake of theatrics. "Nothing in this world is ever free. But..." He paused, letting his verbal prod sink in as he tore his gaze from her eyes and focused it instead on some of her more...feminine...assets. "But, seeing as though you've rewarded me already with such lovely views...I'm listening."

Giving him a shrug at whether this was clever or not, she didn’t feel like it was particularly her best work in the mischief department but if he found it clever then who was she to argue with him. He dipped in a flourishing bow generating a roll of her eyes.
“Ever the gentleman…” The words dripped out dryly, but she did rake a gaze over him. It really was sad that the man was as depraved a scoundrel as he was. What a waste of a man…
‘I don't suppose you've come to watch me run in circles all morning, have you, Lady Evangelina?’
His arms came up on each side of her as he leaned in closer. She knew this game of his. Not giving an inch to him she tilted her head and arched a slender eyebrow up at him. Like what you see?
‘In fact, if I didn't know any better, I'd say you'd come dressed for another activity.’
Sweeping her dark eyes up to peer through her lashes, her lips spread slowly.
“Been there. Done that. Wasn’t entirely impressed the first time.” She murmured silkily to him, holding his gaze a moment before slipping it to his team. “No. I am just here for the horses, Condos.”
At her mention of a favor, he relished that idea as he rocked back and stopped toying with her.
‘Ohh, Evie.’
Inwardly, she cringed. Her fingers tightening on the railing. It was the first sign that she wasn’t as cool about this as she appeared.
‘Nothing in this world is ever free. But…’ She rolled her eyes at him again and huffed. His gaze drew along the curves of her breast and down once again. Her fingers dug into the railing a little harder. ‘But, seeing as though you've rewarded me already with such lovely views...I'm listening.’
Steeling herself, she smiled with cloying sweetness at him. “Oh, but you seemed to think I was free, my lord… I just thought free favors were something you did.” Tilting her chin up arrogantly, “How about this…. How about I don’t wait until you are sleeping and slip into your room and remove you of two very precious body parts instead.”
“My cousin needs an introduction to you. That will not be too arduous of a task, I am sure… But if you so much as taint her…” She grit her teeth, “If you break this Leventi, you buy her… understood.” She straightened, her hands falling away from the railing. “By the way, you really should invest in Leventi horses… they wouldn’t be as winded as your imports are from the heat.”

Observation was a truly underrated talent among people at court. If one were patient enough they could learn just about anything about a person. From her vantage she saw the way that Nikos leered at her cousin and the way that Evie stood her ground. It reminded her a bit of when her father broke a horse. Certain colts could be a handful to say the least. All false bravado with their kicking and snorting, putting on the most outrageous of shows. Backing down for even a moment gave them room to charge forward and take more of your space, eventually giving them the opportunity to drive right into you. Holding one’s ground or even moving into their space was the only suitable option. When Nikos finally rocked back onto his heels a small smile curled at the corners of her lips. So he was an arrogant foal, easy enough to manage.
Rather convinced that this meeting was exactly what she and Evie had discussed she stepped away from her corner and started toward the pair. Using the angles of their positioning to her advantage so as not to catch either of their eyes. If she moved just so and kept herself angled properly she could avoid stepping into their peripheral line of sight and immediately setting off mental triggers. Managing to get close enough that she heard the very tail end of what Evie had to say to the Lord of Toads. Taint her? Buy her? Well wasn’t that an interesting notion. The thought percolated in her mind, carrying the words to the surface that would soon follow. “For a handsome some I would hope.” The tone of her voice was just this side of saccharine; sweet enough to make even the driest of mouths water.
Making herself known in that way was a pleasant transition that she hoped would bring their eyes her way. After all the effort she had put into looking truly beautiful, it would be an awful waste if she didn’t spend a great deal of time at the center of at least Nikos’ attention. Moving up to the rail she ran her hands up and over its surface, folding them rather politely in front of her waist. The positioning only seemed to draw attention to the way the material narrowed at her midsection, exposing the sides of her belly and the sleek curvature of her sides. “Are you criticizing the poor man’s horses already? Poor form, Evie.” There way her features turned and she pursed her lips gave the impression of disappointment but it passed quickly enough as her eyes moved once more to the Lord who was at the center of their game.
“Lord Nikos. I hope you do not mind this little deception. I had wanted to make your acquaintance quite desperately…” The last word was offered the tiniest lilt, saturated with enough breath to imply salaciousness without even knowing it. “Hopefully you can forgive me?” Lifting her gaze beneath the long drape of her lashes she pegged him with that doe-eyed stare. Puppies didn’t have a damn thing on Imma; she could con a man out of his last meal with that gaze. Thankfully Nikos wasn’t starving though, otherwise she might have thought better about her little act. So far though she was making it pretty damn convincing. If she did say so herself.

To see her writhe in discomfort...that's what Nikos always liked best about their meetings. Call it malicious, but to the Condos Lord, it was the perfect mixture of entertainment and payback. At her threat of a less-than-consensual act involving his gonads, Nikos reeled back from the fence theatrically, cupping himself with his hands in mock horror. "It seems your dear Uncle Fotios has taught you a thing or two about negotiations since we last met." Nikos recovered his posture and drew nearer to the fence, crossing his arms over his chest as he stopped just short of where she stood. "Even more frightening a thought is that screams erupt so frequently from my wing of the manor that I'd sooner bleed out before any help could arrive." Whenever they were together, there were hardly any words he spoke that weren't armed with barbs seeking to bury themselves in her, to find a chink in the armor she donned around him, but it seemed their effect lessened with each and every insult. She'd learned to guard herself well.
Nikos listened intently as she made her request of him for an introduction to her cousin. An introduction? All this, for an introduction? Women... Nikos just shook his head as Evie warned him that her cousin was no mere plaything, and threw his hands up in jest. "Hands off the goods. Got it." He narrowed his eyes before allowing a sly grin to cross his face. "Although I take it that yours aren't off the table..."
"For a handsome sum, I'd hope."
A sultry lilt from behind interrupted his statement, but when he turned to face the stranger, he was shocked to see Lady Imma of all the Leventi girls reveal herself as his mystery guest. Or, women, he supposed; the young Leventi had just recently come of marrying age, if he remembered correctly, and she was certainly not ashamed to broadcast it herself. As she drew nearer, draped in a bit of clothing here and there, she allowed her thin fingers to glide across the rail before intertwining them over a her midsection, covering one of the only clothed parts of her body. "Don't chastise your cousin for my sake, Lady Imma," the young Lord started as he turned to face her. "She's always had an eye for criticism." He listened silently as she further revealed that she herself was responsible for his deception. "Ah, so the fabulist shows her face at last. And such a lovely face, that is. With your charms, Lady Imma, I'm afraid no man could withhold his forgiveness for such a coy deceit."
"But where are my manners!" he exclaimed suddenly, throwing out his hands and dipping into a dramatically low bow. "A gift of two such beautiful women, and Helios still has yet to reveal his full glory! To what does one mere man as I owe this pleasure, why, this blessing?"

It was astounding that he still had the ability to get under her skin. That he could affect her even after all of these years. Her threats were bold and something she’d never have made if it were not him and they were not alone. Narrowing her dark, kittenish eyes at him as he reeled backward. At the remark about Fotios, her gaze softened a little and she rolled her eyes. He knew full well there wasn’t any love lost between her and her uncle.
“It’s not the only thing I’ve learned since…” Her words died and jerked her chin away stubbornly to look down the length of the circus track. ‘Even more frightening a thought is that screams erupt so frequently from my wing of the manor that I'd sooner bleed out before any help could arrive.’ This brought her gaze back to him, her brows furrowed as she studied him a moment and leaned in just a little. Just enough to whisper in his ear, “Then maybe you should reconsider your life choices if no one can tell the difference between the sounds you make in the throes of passion and the screams you make as you are bleeding out. It’s just a matter of time until a husband catches up to you, you know?”
Straightening, her lips pursed and she crossed her arms over her chest to stare at him. She’d meant it about Imma. If he ruined her, she’d bring this whole place down around his ears. No amount of sweet talk would get him out of the amount of destruction she’d cause if him if he wasn’t on his best behavior with her little cousin. His eyes narrowed and she wanted to groan at the wicked grin that appeared on his face. Were her goods on the table? She blinked trying to process that and then laughed, “Where you are concerned, Condos, my goods are permanently off the table.”
‘For a handsome sum, I’d hope.’
Evie heard Imma, and turned around just in time to see her cousin… too much of her cousin. Her dark eyes slowly raked over the choice of the outfit Imma had decided to wear. What was she wearing?! Momentarily forgetting about Nikos, her mouth opened and she snapped it shut, her eyes as wide as saucers. Did this mean she was seriously going to pursue getting revenge against Nikos? A twitch appeared at the corner of her eye. Hades was going to appear and summon her to hell. Oh, for fuck’s sake, Imma! She sent the little blonde a sharp look before catching a glance at Nikos.
‘Don't chastise your cousin for my sake, Lady Imma.’ He turned, catching Evie’s glance and causing her to roll her eyes at him. ‘She's always had an eye for criticism.’ That produced a small snort from the pint-sized brunette.
“Mmm… You call it criticism. I call it taste,” She murmured with a shrug. This was not going to end well. She was going to hell and she’d be there all eternity at this rate. Her gaze shifted back and forth between Imma and Nikos.
Tilting her head, she simply stared at him as he dropped into a flourishing bow. Why was the urge to smack him so strong right then? Her hand itched. Glancing upwards, she dropped in a soft, short, simple dip unable to help the roll of her eyes. “Stop that. You’re going to spook your horses waving your arms about like that…” She couldn’t help muttering as she straightened back up and looked to Imma and silently mouthed, “You are in sooooo much trouble.”

Addictions were a funny thing. They could begin with the tiniest little taste of something sweet and then the person would be hooked. In this case Imma had every intention of attempting to use one of Niko’s addictions against him, but in doing so she rather discovered one of her own. It took less than a fraction of a moment. Just long enough for Niko to see her and the shock to present itself within his eyes for her to feel the rush of adrenaline. Was that the way it felt for her sisters whenever they walked into a room and all eyes moved to them? It made her insides tingle and would have undoubtedly made her smile if there was not already one rested upon her lips. The look that Evie offered her soon after helped sober her a little bit of course, but it did not rob her of the moment of pride. It felt good to have someone look at her in awe. Like more than a child for once in her life.
A single brow ascended fractionally over her eyes as she met Evie’s glare with a guarded sense of confidence. This was exactly what she’d promised her cousin she would do, wasn’t it? So surely she could not have expected that she would go back on her word. Pursing her lips she robbed the pair of her smile if only momentarily to allow a hum of consideration to vibrate through their puckered state. ”Having an eye for a thing is not nearly as detrimental as having a tongue for a thing, Lord Nikos.” The slightly playful tone in her voice was one she had heard her sisters use on occasion and despite never using it, she actually seemed to do so rather well. It made the statement seem cheekier than it was, without actually being so in the slightest.
The smile made its way back to the surface of her lips, lighting her features in a way that would cause even Helios to grow dark with envy. That smile was by far one of her best features and she’d learned to master it all on her own. The addition of a flicker of her lashes was all it took to amplify the coquettish perfection of her expression as he complimented her charms and introduced himself. A giggle boiled up warm and saccharine sweet to stick to the surface of her lips as he bowed. Flitting her gaze to her cousin briefly before returning the dark honey gaze to the man himself. ”Well I am happy to hear that, Lord Nikos as I fear I have another apology to offer you this morning. Which may very well help explain the reason for my little trap.”
The suppleness of her features and the fullness of her lips perfectly lent themselves to the overall effectiveness of her pout. It would be hard for anyone not to feel a pang of empathy for the sweet girl as she plumped her lips once more and woefully addressed her apology. ”I am afraid I behaved quite terribly the other night. I was so preoccupied in my attempt to help my cousin that I treated you in a manner so unfitting for your station. I have been wallowing in shame since. Evangelina was kind enough to help me arrange this meeting so that I could properly apologize. If you do forgive me for my atrocious behavior then we may yet still be able to get to know one another. As I had truly hoped we would that evening.”
Turning those big doe-brown eyes up toward him she managed to come across as nothing but entirely genuine. No doubt because a good bit of what she said was in fact true, she had just fancied it up a bit to help bolster his self-importance. Catching the edge of her lower lip between her teeth she gently nibbled upon its surface, further blurring the line between the sweetness of her youth and the undeniable emergence of her womanhood. While her eyes were fixed on Niko at that moment she was ever aware of her cousin and the death stare she was likely going to be giving her. Which made it that much harder to keep herself calm and collected, but bless her she was going one hell of a job thus far.

’ Where you are concerned, Condos, my goods are permanently off the table.’ Given the right time, the right opportunity, the right situation… Nikos was sure he could change her mind. But now was not the time for that. Besides, he so enjoyed seeing that fire in her eyes whenever she looked at him. He’d always enjoyed seeing that fire.
’ Stop that. You’re going to spook your horses waving your arms about like that…’
The Condos lord shot a sly grin at Evangelina. Oh, how he enjoyed their rankling banter. ”No need to worry, dear Evie. My imported steeds do not spook as easily as the Leventi stock, I assure you.” But nonetheless, Nikos let out a shrill whistle, signaling his attendants to come and fetch the horses. Whilst his team was being let away, Nikos turned his attention back to the beautiful women before him.

Well, well now. To be truthful, Nikos hardly remembered seeing Imma the other night – though he was certain of which time she was referring to. The day the Egyptian convoy had entered their kingdom. All the nobles in the land had been at that summit. And he did remember Evangelina rather unceremoniously falling on are rump. Nikos tilted his head to the side, his brows lifting a bit as he regarded the younger Leventi. She was right at that line between childhood and womanhood. Innocence and feminine wiles. The look on her face indicated that she was mastering both quite quickly. His blue gaze flicked to Evie, remembering a time when she too had been walking that line. So many similarities in these Leventi women it seemed. It intrigued him. Made him ever more curious. The promise of keeping his hands to himself that Evie had demanded of him would be a difficult one to up hold, indeed. He looked back to Imma, letting his appreciative gaze linger as his eyes raked over her attire, admiring how the clothes she’d chosen for this meeting hugged her body and revealed her curves. Finally, he met her warm eyes and his smile widened. ”Of course, my lady. You are forgiven. For it is as I said,” he stepped closer to the rail, affording Imma his undivided attention, that charming crooked grin lighting up his face. ”How could I remain upset with such a beauty as you, Lady Imma.” After a moment, he rocked back again to encompass Evie in his confident gaze as well as he looked from one Leventi to the other and back again. ”Are you to be our escort for this meet, Evie? Shall I call for some wine and fruit so that we may sit and enjoy one another’s company? Or perhaps a stroll around the arena would suffice?” Nikos had to admit as he gaze at them both, that this was not where he’d anticipated his morning going when he’d received the invitation to come here for a race. But the Condos baron was not displeased.

There was a faint throbbing starting in the center of her forehead, she’d have liked to blame it on the early morning sunshine but she’d never been a delicate flower that would wilt amidst the warm Taengean rays. It didn’t help that she knew exactly what had triggered this throbbing in her head. Here she was, tasked with playing… Hades' Balls, she didn’t even know the right word, chaperone… to little Imma who was dressed in… Her dark eyes had momentarily trailed over the outfit her cousin had chosen before she had to drag her eyes away because of the rolling that was starting in her stomach. That was one problem all to itself and her other problem was… her jaw tightened as she glanced sideways just enough to see the appreciative look on the Condos Lord’s face. Oh, Hades could just come and collect her now… she’d be doing penance in the underworld for several centuries for this.
‘No need to worry, dear Evie. My imported steeds do not spook as easily as the Leventi stock, I assure you.’
Evangelina’s eyes rolled as she slid him an unruffled look, “I suppose one does become accustomed to the monsters that lurk after they’ve dealt with them long enough.” She shrugged, a faint biting smile touched her lips, “The Leventi stock just has a rather low tolerance for mishandling.” Her cousin moved and that sinking feeling flooded her again. She was not prepared for this. Where was Selene when you needed her?!
As Lord Nikos men collected the horses, she only half listened to Imma. The words were pleasant enough but there was just the faint flavor of sultry tease to them. She idly wondered if she could tag along and play with the horses instead of lingering here waiting for this giant twist of fate to go up in a ball of flames. Her lips pursed though at the cloying sweetness of Imma’s words. Her cousin did not owe Lord Nikos an apology. Nothing had happened to warrant one. Had the girl forgotten she was a Leventi? Evangelina’s arms crossed across her chest and her back straightened a little in a silent warning to Imma to stop laying the flirtation on so thickly if she wished to not be hauled from here by Leventi servants.
Charm oozed from Lord Nikos and she had to blink for a moment before she remembered that she’d once admired that smooth charm. She knew what it was like to have his full attention upon her. To feel like he saw no one else around but her. Imma was being treated to that side of Nikos now. It was a dangerous thing to play with. She knew that from experience.
‘Are you to be our escort for this meet, Evie? Shall I call for some wine and fruit so that we may sit and enjoy one another’s company? Or perhaps a stroll around the arena would suffice?’ At the mention of her name, she jolted and shot him a glare. She might be chaperoning her cousin in this madness but she didn’t have to be pleasant about it. Who better to escort this duo than someone who knew all Nikos’ tricks?
“Oh, I think a stroll around the arena would suffice.” Wine and fruit and sitting down seemed like a bad idea. Evangelina gave a silent snort. She liked bad ideas, she loved them in fact. Over time she’d simply learned she didn’t like bad ideas that involved him. Not waiting for an answer from the two, she slipped under the railing of the arena and ambled just far away so that she didn’t have to be an active part of the conversation but still close enough she could let them feel her presence as she listened to the conversation. After all, she didn’t need to know anything else about Lord Nikos, it was Imma who had pleaded to make his acquaintance more personally.
All of this, it brought back so many emotions. Everything from the way his charm had made her fall at his feet and willing do anything he’d asked to the absolute breaking of her heart and soul as she found out he’d never taken her seriously enough to marry. She’d never been ‘enough’ for him. If she had been, there wouldn’t have been others in and out of his bed like some sort of top ever spinning out of control. Her head dipped, and she frowned at the ground. It’d solidified within her that she needed someone to offer a sense of security to her, and that was something that Nikos would never offer. Glancing briefly over her shoulder at Imma and Nikos before she turned around again. This was so humiliating and degrading. After today, Imma was on her own with him.

Imma listened to the exchange between Evie and Nikos, remembering what her cousin had told her about their penchant to throw barbs at each other. They were well matched in wit and sarcasm and seemed to enjoy baiting one another. She didn’t think Evie regretted their breakup a few years ago. With a man like him, it would have happened sooner or later and sooner was always better than later.
But what about Nikos? Was he still interested in Evie? Did he want to beguile her into loving him again and then cast her aside? She recalled her promise to her cousin … that she would make the Condos lord pay for what he had done to her. Imma still planned to honor it, but she wasn’t exactly sure how. It will come to me when the time is right. At the moment, the task she set herself was enchanting Lord Nikos so completely that all thoughts of seducing Evie would flee from his mind.
She didn’t want to interrupt them. Their banter was quite entertaining and she could probably learn from it. Not everyone she met was going to love her. Someday, she might make an enemy that she wished to insult in a creative and witty way, especially if she learned how to tantalize young men to the point that they pushed each other aside in order to win her favor. Women would be envious and say mean things to her. She needed to learn how to put them in their place.
Her apology turned Nikos’ attention toward her. He tilted his head and studied her with interest in eyes that were as blue as her own. He glanced briefly at Evie and then back at her, his eyes moving up and down her budding figure. Her spine straightened and she lifted her head proudly, exposing the slender length of her neck. She had never seen herself as beautiful before but now she felt positively gorgeous.
Oh, but he was charming! Imma could see how Evie had fallen for him, and wondered if she would be able to resist him herself. Did she even want to? Yes, of course she did. He had the morals of a toad, as her cousin had said. He just happened to be a very attractive and fascinating toad. I will not fall into his trap. Instead, I will set one for him.
His compliments as well as his forgiveness pleased her. “Oh, I am so glad, my lord,” she said. One small hand gracefully caressed the smooth surface of the railing, moving slowly toward him. The bejeweled rings on her fingers sparkled in the early morning light. “I have hardly slept at night, worrying what you must think of me.” Lifting her hand from the railing, she placed it over her heart, calling attention to the cleavage peeking from the neckline of her gown. “You have set my heart at ease.”
Nikos glanced back at Evie and then to her, suggesting that they either sit and enjoy wine and fruit or stroll around the arena. Her cousin thought a stroll was the best idea. It would be nice to burn off some of her nervous energy. Evie apparently needed to burn some too, for she immediately slipped under the railing, walking a short distance away. She’s giving me some time alone with him.
Imma followed her lead, gripping the railing and deftly sliding under it. As one foot hit the ground, she felt a gentle breeze waft over her other leg and realized that her chiton had shifted so that the entire side of that silky, shapely limb was exposed. A rose-colored blush blossomed across her fair cheeks as she pulled it back into place. She had not expected to show that much flesh this morning.
She turned in a slow circle, taking in the sheer size of the arena. “It’s soooo big!” she exclaimed. Favoring her handsome companion with a disarming smile, she asked: “Have you raced here before, Lord Nikos?”

’I suppose one does become accustomed to the monsters that lurk after they’ve dealt with them long enough.’ She shrugged, a faint biting smile touched her lips, ‘The Leventi stock just has a rather low tolerance for mishandling.’
Nikos could well read between the lines of those biting words. Evie would always feel like he’d ‘mishandled’ her, wouldn’t she? But rather the continue that banter with the Lady Imma present, Nikos had went about having his horses taken away and turning his attention to Evie’s dear young cousin.
’Oh, I am so glad, my lord. I have hardly slept at night, worrying what you must think of me. You have set my heart at ease.’
Imma was certainly laying on the flattery, wasn’t she? A wickedly handsome smile played at his lips. Nikos could certainly appreciate the girl’s efforts – and who was he to disappoint? He’d give her this meeting, and all the time she wished of him today. He did not have anywhere of particular importance to be today. At least nothing that the Baron of Doralis couldn’t deal with upon the morrow.
As Nik had ask Evie is she would be accompanying them, part of the Condos lord wished she would stay, and part hoped she would leave him alone with Imma. But given their history together, and her threat to him before Imma had showed, Nikos did not think that a likely course of action.
’ Oh, I think a stroll around the arena would suffice.’
Nikos beamed at Evie. ”Excellent.” Nikos watched the woman dip below the railing of the stands and slip out into the track. It seemed she was willing to give Nikos and Imma a modicum of privacy whilst keeping them in sight. Well enough. Nik nodded, more to himself than to anyone. Would Evie ever trust him again? He did regret how things had ended with them. But Nikos did not regret the fun he’d had with Evie. If he’d been a different man, with a stronger resolve when it came to carnal pleasers… Rather than explore those thoughts further, the young lord turned his attention to the beauty that wished his attention for the day. He looked back to Imma just as she too slipped through the railing in much the same way as her older cousin had, to join him.
His charming smile grew as she turned in a tight circle to view the area as a whole. His blue eyes seemed to sparkle in the morning light. ”I have raced here, Lady Imma. Many times. It’s quite an exhilarating feeling when one is surrounded by galloping steeds, the thunderous sound of their hooves filling one’s ears. There is almost nothing quite like it.” There was one other activity that Nikos ranked on the same level as racing. But that topic would not be appropriate here – and Evie would likely rush an attack against him if she heard him speaking of such things with her cousin. But with the way the young woman was dressed, it was hard not to at least think of such things.
He pushed out away from the railing he’d been leaning on to fall in step with Lady Imma and begin their leisurely circuit around the large arena. He swept his arms behind his back, the muscles in his bared upper arms flexing as he clasped his hands behind him. ”I do hope that the circus is opened again soon. I think a little friendly competition would go a long way in reviving the citizens’ sense of morality. Have you had the chance to watch one of the grand chariot races, my lady?” Nik tilted his head as he glanced to the side where Imma walked beside him. There appeared to be genuine interest in his tone and gaze, and indeed there was. Nikos of Condos had worked hard over the years to develop his reputation. While many of the older noble men may view him as an upstart that couldn’t contain his zest for overindulgence, the women of the court - or most of them – knew him as an attentive man that made them feel special when his attention was upon them. Nik did not like leaving a woman wanting for more. So even now, though he wished to shift his gaze past Imma and watch Evie walking not far away, he would not divert his attention from the young Leventi, and he would engage fully in their conversation.

Lord Nikos seemed to enjoy her flattery. His devastatingly charming smile made Imma’s heart skip a beat. Something fluttered in the pit of her stomach. She felt ... funny ... and she didn't know why. Never had she experienced anything quite like the strange new sensations humming through her young body. They were quite pleasant and she didn’t want them to end. If this was the result of flattering a man, she would definitely do it more often. She wondered if she could enchant him as much as he enchanted her? Never let it be said that she backed down from a challenge, even if the challenger was herself. Or was it him?
Her slow little twirl served another purpose than to give her a good view of the arena. It also gave Lord Nikos an excellent look at her from all angles. He was still standing at the railing above her and she hoped she made a pretty picture, one that he would never forget. Imma glanced up at him as he spoke. His blue eyes seemed to glitter as he gazed down upon her. Those pleasurable sensations intensified. Oh, how she loved the way he made her feel.
‘I have raced here, Lady Imma. Many times. It’s quite an exhilarating feeling when one is surrounded by galloping steeds, the thunderous sound of their hooves filling one’s ears.’There is almost nothing quite like it.’
“Almost?’ she asked, looking up at him with a mischievous sideways smile. “What do you like more than racing? Shall I guess?”
Even his voice sent little thrills shimmering down her spine. She had surmised already that he had raced before for no other reason than he had been driving a chariot when they arrived. She wanted to hear him say it though, and the way he described it made her wish she could participate herself. Women did race sometimes. She had never gotten the chance to try.
As Nikos joined her on the ground, Imma glanced back at Evie. She was still following them, giving them privacy but close enough so that she could hear what they said. The youngest Leventi girl was glad that she had not left them completely alone and she felt safer with her cousin’s steady presence behind her.
Imma’s hips swayed seductively, a natural trait that she was unaware of. Her chiton floated about her legs, every now and then giving a glimpse of a thigh or calf. She didn’t miss the way his muscles flexed when he clasped his hands behind his back. For some reason, she wanted to reach out and touch his arm, but she felt that would be inappropriate. However … a plan began to form in her mind, one that Evie probably wouldn’t like. Still, the notion was irresistible.
‘I do hope that the circus is opened again soon. I think a little friendly competition would go a long way in reviving the citizens’ sense of morality. Have you had the chance to watch one of the grand chariot races, my lady?’
Imma loved the attentive way Nikos looked at her, as if she was the most important person in the world to him at that moment. Imitation was flattery in itself, and she glanced up at him as if she was hanging on his every word. “That would be superb. And no, I have not had the pleasure of watching one yet. My sister Selene won a race a long time ago, but I wasn’t able to attend. I think I was five, or maybe six."
She flashed him a mischievous smile. “I’ll bet you won every race you entered.”
Suddenly she stopped and turned toward him, her blue eyes wide and her full lips slightly parted. “Will you teach me, Lord Nikos?” Imma asked a bit shyly. “I would love to learn how to race a chariot.”

’Almost? What do you like more than racing? Shall I guess?’
Nikos laughed low, a rumbling sound in the back of his throat. ”Oh, my lady, I think you are woman enough to know what such an activity might be.” But even as he said those words, Nikos’ cerulean blue eyes raked the length of Imma’s body, lingering on her exposed sides. He really did enjoy the way that chiton accentuated her feminine form.
Walking beside her now, Nikos was very appreciative of the way Imma’s slender hips swayed as she walked. He unconsciously licked his lips a moment before he realized what he was doing. He cleared his throat and refocused himself, remembering the threat Evangelina had aimed his way just before Imma had arrived. Shifting the topic back to a more innocent subject, Nikos had brough up his hope for the circus to be reopened soon.
’That would be superb. And no, I have not had that pleasure of watching one yet. My sister Selene won a race a long time ago, but I wasn’t able to attend. I think I was five, or maybe six.’
A warm belly shaking laugh bubbled up from Nikos at that bit of news. ”I remember that race. I was there actually. Watching the spectacle from a tree, with your dear cousin over there in the branches just above me, covered in dirt and twigs.” That had been a mostly enjoyable day, complete with seeing the Crown Prince get beaten by a woman of all people! Evie had been a spit fire of a girl even back then. A nostalgic smile settled on his lips as his laughter died down.
I’ll bet you won every race you entered.’
”On the contrary. It wasn’t often that our late Prince Zacharius did not enter a race. He was a formidable opponent with a fine team of horses. I only ever stood a chance when he wasn’t participating. But on those rare occasions, I did indeed cross the finish line first more often than not.” Another reason he wished the circus to resume. As tragic as the loss of Zach was to the kingdom, Nikos was looking forward to being in the winner’s circle more often.
The young Leventi stopped so suddenly that Nikos nearly stumbled in his attempt to alter his momentum – even though his pace had been quite leisurely beside hers. Her eyes were wide with excitement as she stared his down. ’Will you teach me, Lord Nikos? I would love to learn how to race a chariot.’
Nikos’ own smile lit up his bright blue eyes. He gave a low bow, his gaze not leaving hers, as he answered, ”I would be honored, Lady Imma. If you are anything like your sister, you will be a natural I’m sure.” Straightening to his full height once more, the lord took a step towards Imma. ”I could summon my team back into the arena if you wished for a lesson now. But…” He paused, letting his eyes roam over her form once more. ”Might I recommend that we arrange it for another day? It can get quite dusty at times, and I would loath for you to ruin such a… lavish chiton as that.” One should came up in a half shrug, even as his mouth curved up at one end into a mischievous smirk. ”But if now is the lady’s wish. Then now it shall be. Just say the word.”
