”Oh, my lady, I think you are woman enough to know what such an activity might be.”
Heat suffused Imma’s cheeks and her gaze dropped to the ground. She knew what Nikos was talking about but had never experienced it herself. Nor did she know much about what it entailed. Sometimes she thought of asking Theo or Pia what it was like, but her courage failed every time. Did she even want] to know? She wasn’t certain if she was ready for such a huge step, and girls of her status usually waited until they were married. But would she? Did she want to? What if nobody ever expressed interest in her? Among so many beautiful older sisters, she felt like the consolation prize.
From under demurely lowered golden eyelashes, she could see the way the Condos lord was looking her over. Those strange stirrings were back, flooding her nubile young body with the most delightful sensations. Desire. Was she feeling carnal passion for the very first time? She had read about it in a few racy novels. It had seemed like such a bewildering notion. But now she felt as if she understood.
Abruptly, Imma felt far out of her depth. What was she doing? Why had she worn such a revealing chiton? Did she truly want Nikos to gaze at her as if he wanted nothing more than to devour her in a most delectable way?
Yes.
No.
Definitely yes.
And such was the origin of her plan. Raising her eyes, Imma looked up at him when he spoke again.
”I remember that race. I was there actually. Watching the spectacle from a tree, with your dear cousin over there in the branches just above me, covered in dirt and twigs.”
Nikos and Evie had watched that race together, sitting in a tree? Of course they had known each other since they were children, but she had not been aware that they had been friends. Had she developed a crush on him that he had taken advantage of? Was that how he had broken her heart? If so, he didn’t have the morals of a toad, but the morals of a snake. And yet knowing that, he still intrigued her.
“You probably saw more than the people in the stands. I often paint from trees and roofs and other high places. The world looks so much different from a bird’s eye view.”
On the subject of winning, it seemed that Lord Nikos had only won when Prince Zacharias wasn't participating. Imma had heard about the skill with which Prince Zacharias drove a chariot, but had never seen it for herself. Had he lived, he might have been King now, and her brother-in-law. Selene would have been his Queen. Or maybe his father would still be alive too. Thinking about the great losses Taengea had suffered saddened her, and she pushed those thoughts to the back of her mind. “That must have been so exhilarating. I’ll bet nobody will ever be able to beat you now.”
Her request was met with as much enthusiasm as she had hoped. Nikos bowed to her, but kept his striking blue eyes on her own. Imma wasn’t sure if she would ever be as good at racing as her sister, but maybe it would be something that she excelled at. She certainly wanted to give it a try, but more than that, she wanted to feel Nikos standing right behind her guiding her hands on the reins while his muscles undulated against her slender arms. Perhaps she would pretend to fall …
He took a step toward her and gave her a choice. Imma tilted her head and placed a finger against her chin as if trying to decide. Her decision was, however, already made. “I will heed your suggestions, Lord Nikos. Another day it shall be. I shall wear something less lavish.” The young blonde smiled disarmingly. “But soon. I can hardly wait to learn how to race.”
Now she stepped closer to him, so close that they were almost touching. Her voice lowered to a whisper. “Please don’t tell Evie. I want her to be surprised when I show her that I can drive a chariot. In fact, don’t tell anyone. Let this be a secret just between you and me.”

Truth be told, that race day had been the first time the Condos lord had met Evangelina. It had been rather unseemly for the twenty-year-old baron to be in a tree with an eleven-year-old girl. But he’d done it to cheer her up. And honestly, he’d enjoyed the company. She’d been sharp and witty even then. Nikos hadn’t seen the Leventi lady again until years later, but he’d never forgotten her or that spark in her eyes.
Nikos smiled widely at Imma, in full agreement of her assessment of the way the world looked from above. ’Indeed it does, my Lady. I would be interested in seeing your art work. I am a fan of the arts myself.” It was one of the things that had drawn him to his current mistress back in Doralis. Of course, no one really knew of the young merchant girl’s existence. Nikos had never brought her to the city with him, preferring to keep his private life and his courtly life separate as much as possible. His own father didn’t know of Arete. But the girl could draw, and he so enjoyed watching her lose herself in her art. Did Imma have that same tendency, he wondered.
The subject changed to that of the races and his skills at winning. Nikos explained that he’d never been able to beat Zacharias. ’That must have been so exhilarating. I’ll bet nobody will ever be able to beat you now.’ A warm rumbling laugh bubbled up from his belly. ”Yes, well… that is the hope. As soon as they open the arena for racing again, you can bet that I will be first in line to enter the race.” Nikos itched to be back on the track, his powerful team galloping fast and pulling his chariot along, with him at the reins.
Imma stopped in her tracks and asked him to teach her how to race a chariot. He agreed, giving her a choice of starting such lessons today, but suggesting for her to choose another time so she could wear something more practical. Not that he didn’t appreciate the revealing peplos she was wearing. He couldn’t help but let his gaze drift over her once more at the thought. ’I will heed your suggestions, Lord Nikos. Another day it shall be. I shall wear something less lavish. But soon. I can hardly wait to learn how to race.’ Nikos returned her disarming smile with a warm grin of his own. ”Excellent. I look forward to it.’ Imma stepped closer to him then, leaving hardly any space between them now. He could smell the perfumes she’d chosen that day. Did he smell lavender? That scent was one of his favorites. ’Please don’t tell Evie. I want her to be surprised when I show her that I can drive a chariot. In fact, don’t tell anyone. Let this be a secret just between you and me.’ Nikos lifted his brows and shifted his gaze to peer over Imma’s shoulder towards Evie. He remembered when they had their own little secrets as well. The exhilarating feeling he’d had when they had first started seeing each other, hiding it from her uncle and from his father. It seemed that such secrecy ran in the family. One side of his mouth lifted into a sly smirk and he leaned down closer to Imma, so that when he whispered near her ear his breath fell across her cheek. ”As you wish, Imma,” he said, dropping any formalities he’d held until now, lending an intimate familiarity to the way he said her name. He pulled back just enough to meet her gaze, ”Meet me here. In three days. Can you sneak away after dark? The light of the full moon will be bright enough to see, but the late hour will keep prying eyes away.” Three days would give him ample time to compose a letter to send back home, to inform Arete that he would be delayed in his return to Doralis. The temptation of getting to know this alluring Leventi – the possibility of having more interaction with Evangelina – was just too enticing to pass up.

Hades is so going to drag me to Hades for this…
Evangelina put as much distance between her young cousin Imma and Nikos as she felt was safe.... Which wasn’t that much space but enough that she didn’t have to listen to Imma flirt with the man who’d left her cracked and broken and wondering why she wasn’t enough. Her dark eyed gaze settled on to the dust of the arena as she shuffled almost lazily over the dirt. She might not trust Nikos as far as she could throw him but she did trust that her beautiful little cousin was not stupid enough to do anything that would actually create some sort of issue.
But after a few moments, she noted that the buzz of their voices had dropped and she found herself turning around to make sure they’d not disappeared while she was trying to ignore them. An inward groan ran through her, she was a terrible chaperone. What kind of Chaperone tried to ignore their charge? She was ready to return to the manor and go for a nice, long, very long ride to anywhere that wasn’t here.
Her gaze landed on the pair and her eyebrows came together suspiciously. Her mouth formed a thin line at the way they whispered back and forth between one another and she came to a halt. Her hands on her hips. This was plotting if she’d ever seen plotting. Why had she ever thought this was going to be okay? This was not okay. This was definitely not okay. They did not need to be plotting.
“Imma.” She curtly called, “Your mother is probably expecting us back soon and we’ve been gone long enough.” Flashing dark eyes flitted to Nikos and she frowned, “I’m sorry, my lord, but there is only so much time in a day.” She didn’t want to linger too long on his face so she jerked her gaze back to Imma, let’s go… Imma.

“Indeed it does, my Lady. I would be interested in seeing your art work. I am a fan of the arts myself.”
Lord Nikos wanted to see her paintings! Excitement careened through Imma’s veins, tempered with an unwanted dose of anxiety. What if he didn’t like them? What if he thought they looked amateur? What if the subject matter seemed frivolous? Generally, she had no problem showing her artwork to complete strangers. She even liked being watched while she drew or painted. It made her feel as if she was worth something. Why would she be watched if the observers didn’t think she had talent?
For some strange reason, Imma wanted to make an excellent impression on the handsome Baron and that included enchanting him with her art. Though she could barely think of anything but how closely he was walking beside her, she was sure that she could find some artwork that would please him. When she got home, she would pick out the ones she thought he would like, perhaps with Evie’s help, since she knew him much better than Imma did.
“I’m still learning,” Imma said. A splash of soft pink blossomed across her cheeks. “I’d love to show you some of my paintings.” She smiled impishly. “But only if you promise not to laugh. And if you think I’m good enough, I shall draw or paint anything you ask me to.” She hoped that he didn’t want her to paint Evie, though she didn’t know why that thought should pop into her head. Those two barely tolerated each other and her cousin would never pose for him anyway.
The topic turned to racing. They were in the arena, after all. Lord Nikos claimed he would be the first man to sign up for the races when the arena opened again. “And I’ll be cheering for you from the stands.” She almost asked if she could give him a small token, like a ribbon or a ring, to take with him for luck, but that would be far too forward. What was he doing to her? Why was she thinking of things she would have never considered before … like learning to race herself?
Lord Nikos agreed to teach her but would he keep the lesson a secret? Imma held her breath as he glanced back at Evie, still following a fair distance behind them. Did he want her to come along? Her cousin would never agree to the plans the two of them were making.
The young blonde exhaled when he turned back to her, leaning toward her to whisper into her ear. His closeness was intoxicating and she loved the way her name sounded on his lips. His breath warmed her face and tickled her ear. Imma made her tremble with more of those lovely new sensations. How did he do that to her? And why did she want more?
He distracted her so thoroughly that it took her a few seconds to process his words. Three days. After dark by the light of the moon. “Yes … Nikos.” Imma blushed again. “I should have no problem sneaking away after dark. It shall be a grand adventure and I look forward to it with all my heart.” She looked up into his eyes, drinking him in. Oh, if only I could reach up and ...
Evie’s voice startled her and she quickly stepped away from the mesmerizing lord as her cousin approached them. The sudden movement caused the skirt of her peplos to billow outwards, again revealing one long shapely leg from thigh to ankle.
Was it time to go already? It seemed as if they had only arrived but a moment ago. Imma didn’t want to leave, but at least she would see Nikos again in three days time. Reluctantly, she nodded. “I guess we should be going.”
Looking up at Nikos, her blue eyes sparkled with mischief. Playfully, she held up her hand to be kissed. “It was a pleasure to meet you at last, my lord.”

’I’m still learning. I’d love to show you some of my paintings. But only if you promise not to laugh. And if you think I’m good enough, I shall draw or paint anything you ask me to.’
Nikos smiled softly at this. ”My lady… I would never dream of laughing at you. Or at anything you create with your art.” He meant every word, too. Nik was too much an art aficionado to ridicule anything of such nature. Her offer to draw or paint something for him was intriguing though. Especially since it offered the idea that he’d get to spend more time with her. His gaze once again traveled down her body and the tantalizing cut of her peplos. He forced his eyes away and on to other thoughts as they continued their conversation, reminding himself he’d promised Evangelina that he wouldn’t touch this Leventi.
’And I’ll be cheering for you from the stands.’
Nikos smirked, giving a bow of his head in silent appreciation of her sentiment. His thoughts turned to another woman that would likely be in the stands cheering him on. Arete. The mistress waiting for him to return to Doralis. The lover that he’d kept hidden away from most prying eyes for a few years now. Nik’s gaze settled on Evie not far away, and then back on Imma. Maybe he’d keep Arete in the shadows for a while more. His long-time lover could get a bit jealous when she knew he’d been galivanting with other women. Though she did have a habit of trying to remind him just exactly why he kept calling her back to his bed – an added bonus that was most enjoyable. But he’d always been careful to not let Retta know who he’d been with, just that he had shared the company of another.
The conversation had moved on to the prospects of Nikos teaching Imma how to race a chariot. And keeping the lessons secret from even her cousin, who lurked not far away. Nikos’ interest had been piqued even more by this turn of events. And he was pleased when Imma agreed to meeting him in the arena after dark in three days. ”Excellent.” That charming grin of his lit of his face, his crystalline blue eyes seeming to flame with a light of their own.
Just then, Evangelina came walking over with purpose in her step. ’Imma. Your mother is probably expecting us back and we’ve been gone long enough. I’m sorry, my lord, but there is only so much time in a day.”
I guess we should be going. It was a pleasure to meet you at last, my lord.’
Nikos eyed Evie, seeing though her excuse of Imma’s mother expecting them back. He knew she was simply trying to pull Imma away from him before he did something Evie deemed untoward. The look he gave the older Leventi Lady told her as much – that he knew what she was doing. Nik turned his attention back to Imma and he smiled wistfully. He bowed low to her, ”The pleasure was mine entirely, Lady Imma. I do hope we shall meet again.” He was playing into the fact she wished to keep their next meeting secret. Nik stood and bowed toward Evangelina, though not near as low a dip as he’d given Imma. Evie was his equal, a friend – even if she didn’t see him that way anymore, it seemed. ”Thank you, Lady Evangelina, for this wonderful introduction. Though I wish we could have more time, I must be going as well.” Nik let his gaze alite on Imma once more as he turned to leave, giving her a wink once he’d turned in a way that Evie would not see the gesture. Then he sauntered away from them, heading towards the inner area of the arena where his servants would be holding his chariot and horses. He had arrangements to make for his ‘lessons’ with Imma of Leventi.
