The modest ship had just landed at the docks in Cairo, not for the first time and certainly not the last time it would ever find itself there. The crew who lived, worked and thrived on the vessel had been sailing for months on months and though they loved the sea and the life of a pirate, they also wished for dry land. Land would provide a chance to resupply, rest and most importantly for the youngest member of the crew, it would mean new faces and a warm body to sleep next to, whether it was free, or he paid for it. When the ship was docked properly, and everything secured, Saro hopped off the ship and landed on the docks, managing to look drunk and graceful all at the same time. His father once told him his only talent was functioning fully while drunk off his ass, and he’d taken that as a compliment.
He looked a little out of place standing there, wearing a simple pair of trousers and no shirt, a collection of gold and silver necklaces adorned his neck, with various rings on his fingers to match. His signature red feather was tied into his hair, standing out against his long brown hair, it was clear he was not from around there, and he didn’t miss the people staring at him and the others as more of the crew began to take leave of the ship and head in towards the city to take part in what ever pleasures tickled their fancy. He figured he would do the same, his first thought was to seek out a tavern or brothel, either one would be what he was looking for. A great way to start off the little bit of time he had off before they would leave to sail elsewhere.
With his mind set on his goal of getting drunk and finding the company of a woman, he set off down the docks, scanning the people around him for anything that would be easy to steal. At this point pick-pocketing was more of a habit than a necessity, he had more than enough money to last him this trip.
He paused in his travels, spotting something that caught his attention more than the easily stolen valuables people had on them. He stood there for a moment to take her in, she stood there, bathed in youth and natural beauty. He would believe her a goddess if he believed in any sort of higher power.
Unafraid of rejection and full of confidence, Saro approached her without a second thought. He couldn’t remember a time when he had ever been afraid to approach someone immediately, whether he was flirting with them or he wanted to fight, he had never once been shy. It would be near impossible to be shy when you spent your life on a ship crammed with other people, there wasn’t exactly a lot of privacy when sailing for extended periods of time in a small space.
“What good luck I must be blessed with to step off my ship and be greeted by such a radiant creature.” He said, voice smooth and confident as he gave her a charming grin.
“In all my travels, and they have been plenty, I have never had the pleasure of seeing a woman so beautiful. Your husband must be a lucky man.” He said, though he was not worried if she was married, it wouldn’t be the first time he had charmed his way into the bed of a married woman, he had hardly come across anyone who could resist his charms and his good looks. His hope was, she would be the same as most. She would make good company, at least for a while.

Cool water caressed her toes where Neithotep dipped her feet in the Nile, gauzy kalasiris hitched up almost to her hips as she sat on the edge of the dock. It was hot, painfully so, the heat seeming to hang like a haze in the balmy air. The midsummer Egyptian sun was a torturous thing, but still Nia preferred the heat of the port than the relative coolness of her family’s home. If she had to hear her mother’s voice one more time that day, she thought she might completely lose her mind.
It was the same fight as always. When was Nia going to settle down? Did she understand that she could not run wild forever? Did she know how important it was to maintain the honor of her Hei? Nia had lost count of how many times she had heard the self-righteous speech before, the reprimands of a woman who seemed to have forgotten what life was like in her own youth. Why couldn’t Iaheru understand that Neithotep wasn’t like her other daughters? That she’d never be the smiling courtier who meekly stood at her stranger of a husband’s side while she slowly died inside?
She’d rather drown herself in this very river than ever live in such a way. She’d threatened it more than once.
Heaving a deep sigh, Nia ripped off small bits of the flatbread in her fingers, tossing them out to silver fish with shimmering scales who darted to the surface to retrieve the floating morsels. A smile tugged up the corner of her plush lips as the bread disappeared, the questing fish soon nudging at her toes. Giggling softly, she lightly kicked them away, dusting the crumbs off her fingers before withdrawing her feet from the water. Even with the cooling waters of the river, the sun was getting to be too much. She had to go find some shade.
Rising to her feet, accented Coptic caught Nia’s attention, the young woman turning to meet the dark gaze of a foreign man who seemed to know all the right words to say. Her soft little smirk turned to a full-on smile at his exuberant flattery, mischievous eyes taking him in from head to toe. He was a handsome man, leanly muscled with long hair that she already longed to sink her fingers into. The baking sun temporarily forgotten, the Egyptian woman stepped in a bit closer—the sway of her hips nearly mimicking the lazy winding of the great river behind them.
“I must compliment you on the sweetness of your tongue, my new friend,” Nia told the stranger with a laugh, raising her brow at his last comment. “A smooth way of seeing if I am married. I’m sure you’ll be happy to know I’m not.” Then again, would it matter if she were? She was never one to turn down such a treat, especially when so freely offered.
Though she was hardly the most beautiful woman in the world, Neithotep H’Sheifa was nonetheless stunning, and she was an absolute sucker for any man who pointed it out. That he was so attractive himself only added to his appeal, the exotic tilt of his features drawing Nia in like flies to honey. I seem to be developing a rather specific attraction for sailors from foreign lands, she thought idly to herself as her gaze unabashedly took him in. Not that I’m complaining.
“I’m Neithotep, or Nia,” she introduced herself to the sailor, another sweet smile lighting up her features. Reaching out, she pushed an errant lock of hair back behind his shoulder, her fingers lightly brushing against his skin in the process. “What’s your name, handsome?”

As she moved closer to him and spoke, he knew that the hook he had thrown out had been bitten, and she was receptive to him at the very least, though the look in her eyes told him she was more than receptive. He wasn’t surprised, there was hardly a person in all the lands he had been to that had rejected his advances.
He chuckled slightly as she commented on his test to see if she was married, glad to hear that she was not. It tended to be easier to get unmarried women in bed than it was to get married women in bed, something about honouring the sanctity of marriage. In the end, Saro usually got what he wanted. Hell, he had even slept with both husband and wife at the same time several times in the past, he was not picky.
“Merely speaking my mind, and showering you in the words you deserve to hear.” He replied, his charming smile still on his face. He was a bit surprised by her forwardness as she brushed his hair behind his shoulder and touched the bare skin there, but he was far from complaining. The small sample of her touch that he had gotten was soft and warm, a far cry from the roughness of a life on the seas. She held promise of a soft and sweet companionship, at least until he moved on to the next companion.
“Saro.” He introduced himself, taking her hand, he pressed a kiss to the back of it with a small bow, giving her a grin before he let go of her hand once more. “It is my absolute pleasure to meet you, Nia.” He reached up and pushed his dark hair over one shoulder, once it was out of the way he undid a clasp on one of the thin gold necklaces that hung around his neck. He held it out to her, stretched over both his hands so she could see it, a little golden lion charm hung from the end.
“A gift.” He said, brown eyes locked on her face as he presented the item. He had stolen in at the last port they had landed at, so it held no meaning to him, but he knew it’s worth, and he knew that most women loved to be showered in gifts. He had no shortage of expensive jewelry he could present to them, and if he did begin to run low, it wouldn’t be hard for him to steal some more. Such was the life of a pirate.
If all it took was a few pieces of jewelry that held no sentimental value for him and some empty words to court such a beautiful woman, he would be happy. It was either giving up some jewelry for a night or two of fun, or it was paying for it at the brothel, either way it would cost him. And this way he didn’t have to waste his gold, he could get rid of the stolen jewelry instead of attempting to sell it. And she would get some new jewelry to do what she wanted with, plus the pleasure of Saro’s company, even if it was for a short amount of time. In his mind, they both won in this situation.
“The heat is unbearable today, allow me to escort you to a place where you can get some shade and something to drink, I can’t allow one such as yourself to succumb to the will of the sun.” He said, offering his arm for her to take so he could escort her somewhere, preferably a tavern, as he had a thirst for a strong drink.

A charming blush painted her cheeks as the man who introduced himself as Saro pressed his lips to her hand, the bright flash of white teeth in a roguish smile making Nia’s heart flutter. The young woman so often seemed to be the aggressor with her attentions that it almost took her aback to have a man approach her first. I really should spend more time in the port, she thought, thinking back fondly on her encounter with Lukos earlier in the year. So much more to catch here than fish.
Neithotep had rarely been a woman to care much about jewelry or baubles, but when Saro held the necklace out to her, such reservations were forgotten. Smiling with delighted surprise, she accepted the chain and fastened it around her own neck, fingers lightly toying with the little lion charm on the end. Holding it up to the light so she could see it better, Nia made a small sound of appreciation and pushed it back to the hollow of her neck with a hand cupped over it. “Thank you,” she murmured with an unwonted shyness, a sweet warmth spreading in her chest. “It’s beautiful. Lions are my favorite animal.”
Taking his elbow when he offered it, Nia’s smile brightened as her fingers glided along the smooth muscled flesh of his forearm. “I’d wager I’m far more used to this sun than you are,” she teased, glancing up at his face. “Perhaps it is I who should be protecting you, hm?” She laughed. “Though I wouldn’t complain about shade and a drink. The heat is particularly blistering today.”
Their combined footsteps started leading them away from the port toward the denser area of Cairo where many of the city’s taverns and brothels could be found. Neithotep navigated the crowded streets with a practiced ease, her familiarity with the area perhaps a bit unexpected for a woman of her birth. She didn’t often find many of the nobility in this area. Though why that was, she didn’t understand. To her, it held infinitely more charm and appeal than the upper echelons of Egyptian society. At least the people here were genuine.
Most of them, anyway.
“So, Saro, what tide of fortune happened to bring you this way?” she asked her companion, pressing in closer to him as the crowd became more congested. The rank stench of sweat lingered in the air to an almost unbearable degree, looking longingly for the closest tavern that didn’t seem to already have an overload of patrons. Indoors would do them no good if the room was packed from floor to ceiling with warm bodies. They’d gain reprieve from the sun, sure, but the heat would be just as stifling. “Where do you hail from? Have you been to Cairo before?”

He wasn’t surprised as she took the necklace with the typical enthusiasm he had been met with every time he presented someone with something shiny in order to win favour. There was hardly a time when it didn’t work the way he wanted, everyone liked gifts, especially if those gifts seemed expensive.
“A beautiful animal, majestic, regal and powerful. Truly your mirror image.” He said, his tirade of flattery continuing as she stated that lions were her favourite. A lucky guess on his part, as he could have presented her with any of the numerous pieces of jewelry that he currently wore.
He walked with her as she took his arm, letting her navigate since she knew the place better than he did, despite it not being his first time there, he had never paid enough attention to know where anything was. Mostly he tended to just wander until he found what he was looking for, there was never a brothel or tavern far from the docks, sailors all tended to be looking for the same things when they stumbled off their ships and onto dry land.
He glanced down at her with a grin as she teased him about not being used to the sun. “I am plenty used to sun and heat, there is no where to take shade out on the open water.” He replied, a light and teasing tone to his voice as he spoke. “Though, if you were to assist in making me more comfortable, you would hear no complaints.” He said, his grin giving away the fact that he didn’t necessarily mean a drink and shade that time.
“The tides always bring me where I need to be, today is no different.” He said, chuckling a little as his free hand subtly swiped someone’s coin purse from where it had been tied to their hip, tucking it into the pocket of his pants without missing a beat in their steps.
“You are full of questions, I get the feeling you do not travel often. I am from the seas through and through, born on the water, I call no lands home.” He stated, looking over at her once more as they continued their search for some where to cool off.
“I have been here often enough, though never have I been graced with such beauty. It seems the fair city of Cairo has become even more interesting since last I stepped foot in it.” Saro stated, referring again to her as he shamelessly flirted and threw compliments her way.
“Now it is your turn, what brings a lady such as yourself down to the port so full of ungroomed sailors, especially in heat such as this?” He asked, looking around at the faces they passed as they walked, seing if there was anyone he recognized, he tended to anger people at every stop, and he knew he had a couple people here who would be out for his blood if they saw him again. Though it had been a few years since he had last been in Cairo, so he had no idea if they were still around, still mad, or if they would even recognize him.
His attention turned back to the woman on his arm, pointing at what seemed to be a brothel, one that if he remembered correctly also served fairly decent drinks. “If you are not put off by the lusts of the flesh, that one there seems rather empty considering the rest of the buildings, and last time I was here, they provided shade and drinks.” He said, a little curious if she would be turned off by the idea of stepping foot in a brothel, he wasn’t sure how she would react, she seemed quite adventurous, at least more so than most women he met.

This one was full of flattery, and Nia wasn’t likely to complain about it. Even if he was a bit extravagant, she basked in it, nonetheless. What woman didn’t want to be told how beautiful and radiant she was, especially from someone so handsome? Her merry laugh filled the air as they walked, moving in a little closer to him while her free hand reached to join its partner on his arm. She never seemed to have any shortage of serendipitous luck when it came to finding men. It was keeping them that was the problem.
She listened as he spoke of his time on the water, smiling when he relayed that he called no place home. Nia was full of envy at such a thought, the look in her eyes longing as she glanced up to meet his gaze. “Sounds like a dream,” she replied wistfully, though her accompanying sigh soon turned to a laugh.
“I’ll make you as comfortable as you wish,” Nia teased in response, velvet lips pulling up at the corner. She was no fool to misunderstand the implication of his words, embracing them with little shame. She’d always found it foolish and even baffling that so many women would deny themselves of such idle pleasure. Life was meant to be enjoyed, not wasted.
They continued to walk as he continued to speak, the Egyptian woman listening with half an ear while her eyes kept scanning for somewhere for them to stop. When he turned the questioning over to her, she glanced over at him with a sweet smile. “You’re right, I have not had the occasion to do much travelling,” she replied. “At least not outside of Egypt. I have been to Thebes and Alexandria, but other countries or across the sea? Unfortunately never. I would love to, though. Perhaps one day I’ll have the chance.”
She laughed again when Saro asked what a lady like her was doing in the port, briefly hearkening back to the last time she’d been asked that question. Was she truly such a rarity? Or were all men so easily surprised? “The port holds far more points of interest than my home or the Palace,” Nia informed her companion. “Different people, different sights. I like to watch the ships come and go and the passengers they take and release. Life in a noble house can be so dreadfully boring. At least here, there is a reminder that the world is so much bigger and more exciting than marriage and babies. I guess… people just expect less of me here. It’s refreshing.”
Nia hadn’t meant to go so in depth with her explanation, but it was all true. She hated the expectations of her family, chafed under their rules and assertions of duty and honor. At the port among strangers, none of that mattered, and she was free to simply… be. To live and breathe without reservation, to experience sight and sound and smell without another weighing on her. It was liberating, at least for the short snatches of time she was able to grab for herself.
When they stopped in front of a brothel, Nia looked over at her companion with eyebrows raised, but she didn’t protest. She was hardly one to shun the pleasures of the flesh, and he was right—it was not as crowded as many of the other establishments around it. Did that mean the drinks weren’t as good or was the heat of the day simply too much for wanton exertion? “Here is as good as anywhere else,” she told him with a smirk, lightly squeezing his arm. Shrugging, she gestured for him to precede her. “After you.”

Saro’s grin kept steady on his face as they talked and walked, catching her gaze as she looked up at him after he spoke of life on the sea. “It is not all as the stories tell, life is hard on the water, but despite such things, it would take a lot to pry me from it.” He said, leaving a little teasing hint that perhaps there was something that could turn his attentions from sailing. Though he longed for love and marriage, he wasn’t sure if he ever would truly find it and settle down on dry land. It was just not the life he knew, and for some reason, the partners he had never wanted to join him on the ship.
He nodded as she spoke of how boring her life was as a noble. “I do not know that feeling myself, but I can only guess at how unfortunate it would be, locked to one place with such duties as are expected of a woman, especially a woman of such blood.” He agreed.
His grin widened just a bit as she agreed to enter the brothel without hesitation. He led her in, her hands still gripping his arm as they walked inside the door, greeted by the heavy scent of strong wine and the mixing of voices as the women working the brothel plied their trade and men gathered around tables to gamble what money they had left after partaking in the other pleasures the building had to offer. Despite catching the attention of a few women who had yet to find a paying customer, Saro ignored them all, the woman on his arm was much more attractive, and on top of her looks, she seemed as if she could offer him at least some what of a decent conversation. He found a small table that was tucked in the back of the brothel that was not yet occupied, and he brought her to it.
“Take a seat my lady, I shall excuse myself to find us some refreshment.” He said, giving her a bit of a wink before he disappeared into the slight crowd that was gathering. He returned shortly with two cups of wine for them, taking a seat across the table from her, he set one glass of wine down for her before taking a drink from his own cup, setting it aside for the moment. “Such beauty, and intelligence, and unafraid of the pleasures life offers, I feel as if I have gained favour with at least some sort of deity to have run into you.” He said smoothly, reaching over to gently brush his finger tips over her cheek.
“Are you a religious woman, Nia?” He asked out of curiosity. Saro was someone who genuinely liked to get to know new people, at least for the most part, some people were so boring he could care less if he knew a single thing about them. This woman who sat in front of him though, had his full attention, at least for the moment. All the whores in the brothel they currently sat in couldn’t pull his attention from her.

Following Saro into the brothel, Nia let her eyes roam, dark gaze taking in the hedonistic revelry that surrounded them. Soft laughs and sighs of pleasure gently caressed her ears, the salty scent of sweat and the sweet aroma of passion wafting under her nose. Had she been born a commoner, Nia thought it very likely she would have ended up in a place just like this, a place where the pleasures of the flesh were worshipped and adored, indulged in freely without a thought for the consequence.
Perhaps it was a romanticized version of what the workers here did, but she rather preferred the fantasy to the reality.
Her smile radiant, Nia took a seat at Saro’s insistence, watching the sailor’s lithe movements as he made his way over to the bar to gather his promised drinks. Sleek and graceful as a cat, she could hardly tear her eyes away, her smile brightening when he started the walk back. Accepting the glass of wine gratefully, she pressed it to her lips and took a sip, sighing blissfully when she put it down. The crisp liquid and the shade alike were working wonders, Nia relaxing in her chair and looking at her companion with an indolent gaze.
Leaning into the gentle touch of his hand against her face, her expression softened even further, reaching up to run her fingers over his. She knew she should be wary of such a smooth tongue, but it was like she couldn’t help herself. Dark hair running over his shoulders like silk, all she could think about was how it would feel to run her fingers through it, only barely restraining herself from leaning over and doing just that.
A brow tilted in surprise at his question. Wasn’t everyone religious to some degree? Of course, there was always a range of devoutness—from those who just paid lip service to the gods to those who dedicated their lives to their service, but she’d never met anyone who didn’t profess to believe at all. Nia looked at him thoughtfully, taking another sip of her wine before she answered.
“As religious as anyone, I suppose. I do not go to the temples daily or anything like that, but I do believe the gods work in our lives in sometimes strange ways.” Resting her elbows on the table and folding her hands, she rested her chip atop them. “I worship Hathor mostly, our goddess of love, joy, and fertility.” She wasn’t sure how much Saro knew about the Egyptian pantheon, so she thought she’d clarify, just in case. “She has seen fit to bless me in many ways, so I’ve done my best to revere her in what ways I can.”
Her smile crept back onto her lips as she asked, “And what about you, Saro? Who hears your prayers at night?”

He noticed as she practically melted against his touch to her cheek, and he couldn’t help but think that this was almost too easy. He sort of missed the chase sometimes, though he wouldn’t have had it any other way. Who was he to complain if he could get into the beds of beautiful women like her with hardly any effort. At least he wasn’t like some of the poor fools who chased after gorgeous women, there were a few on his ship who had a lot less luck than he did when they were on land. His hand eventually pulled away from her cheek, instead grabbing his cup of wine to take a long drink from it before placing it back down.
“And how blessed you are.” He agreed with a grin, making a point to let his eyes wander over her body to emphasize his comment before they returned to lock gazes with her once more.
“I have travelled many places, heard tales of many gods, sung praises to just as many, and yet in none do I truly rest faith.” He said, he wasn’t sure if he really believed in any sort of god, it seemed that any where he went, they all had a different idea of what greater beings there were and what purpose they held, along with how to pay tribute. How was one supposed to believe that any of them existed when there were so many to believe in? Surely not all of them could co-exist together where ever they were. He found it easier to keep an open mind, to experience religion where ever he went but to never truly settle on one belief. For all he knew, he could choose one that was false and bring the anger of the true gods down on himself.
“Now is there a reason that you find yourself without a husband? Because I have yet to find a flaw, surely you have suitors lined up vying for your love?” He stated, doubting that she would remain unmarried for long. He had shown up at the correct time, perhaps she would be the one he fell in love with and he could convince her to join him on the ship. She seemed a bit delicate for a life on the seas, but from her previous words she seemed adventurous and curious. She could learn to live life on the water. Or perhaps they would merely enjoy each other’s company for the night and would then part ways come morning light. Either way, Saro was enjoying her company, and he was sure he would enjoy it even more once he managed to get her dress off of her.
One step at a time, first he would charm her a little longer, perhaps get a few more cups of wine in her and then he would worry about finding some where that they could have a little privacy. She seemed very open to spending the night with Saro, so he was in no rush to get her off to bed. He had to admit he was rather enjoying her company, even while clothed.

To go through life without the gods was a concept foreign to her. The gods were a part of everything in Egyptian life, even if one wasn’t actively thinking of their role. The Pharaoh himself was said to be a god-king on Earth, so to think of a man who put little stock in the divine realm was a rarity, to say the least. A life at sea seemed like just the kind of existence where one would rely on the whims of the gods, for who could really predict the avarice of the waters? It fascinated Nia even as it confused her, looking at Saro thoughtfully as he explained his lackadaisical faith. Would he be cursed for such a lack? He didn’t seem that way to her, in fact, quite the opposite. She envied him his life in a way she rarely longed for anything.
Nia laughed at his next question, even if the sound was humorless. Marriage. It had long been a point of contention between she and her family for as long as she could remember, her mother insisting she must marry to continue their line while she blatantly refused to even look at other nobles. Many of her affairs often began in the very port where she’d first seen Saro, though how long-lived or how deep they ran varied wildly.
“I’m hardly flawless, but I have had suitors, yes,” she replied mildly, tracing the tip of her finger around her wineglass. She took another sip before setting it back down and looking at him with a smile. “I’m a romantic at heart, dear Saro. I want to love the man I marry. And the men I’ve loved…” Her smile turned a little sad, a shoulder lifting in a shrug. “My parents never deemed them ‘suitable’ for a woman of my birth.” Sighing and rolling her eyes, she took another swallow of her wine, her look turning dreamy as she regarded him. “Blood and rank and status… it all seems so foolish to me. We are all human, noble or not, yes? Why should we choose who we spend our lives with based on how rich they are or what their family name is?”
She moved her chair closer to his side of the table, gently taking his hand and laying it on her chest right over her heart. Warm fingers covered his, pressing it firmly against her flesh so Saro could feel its rhythm beneath his palm. “I want to feel my heart race when my husband walks in the room. I want it to beat harder whenever he says my name.” She laced her fingers in his, though she kept them both pressed against her heart. “Our hearts rule so much of who we are. Is it so much to ask that I be allowed to follow mine?”

Saro grinned, he agreed completely with her point of view on marriage. Glad that he was not bound by the expectations of high society, or really any society. Sure, there were unspoken rules to his lifestyle, but for the most part, he was truly free. Following his own heart and his own desires in which ever way he chose. Unbound by Gods or men.
He was surprised, pleasantly so as she took his hand and placed it on her warm skin, his eyes remained locked on hers as the two shared this intimate moment in the middle of a brothel. Despite the half-naked women who milled around, waiting for their next customer, Saro’s full attention was on this woman he sat with, she had enchanted him, that much he was sure of. He felt his own heart speeding up a little, he could see himself falling in love with Nia.
“It seems to me that you need to fall in love with a man who can charm your parents, despite blood or rank. Or perhaps one who has enough gold that blood wouldn’t matter.” He said, a teasing look in his eyes, though he didn’t doubt his abilities to charm her parents if it came right down to it. When he wanted to, Saro could play friendly with anyone, and he was confident in who he was.
“Or perhaps, you need to be taken away, far away from any matters of nobility.” He continued, his hand gently sliding from its spot on her chest, trailing teasingly up until it rested on the side of her neck.
“Maybe even by a handsome sailor. One who could show you the world beyond the cares of society.” He said, he leaned in close as he spoke, and he let his words linger in the air for just a moment before he captured her lips with his own, pressing a soft kiss to her lips. He allowed it to linger for just a moment before he pulled away, his hand sliding from her neck and down her shoulder and arm, taking her hand, he pressed another kiss to the back of it before simply holding it, letting their hands rest together on his knee.
“I have to admit, in these few short moments since I first saw you, you’ve captured my heart. Never have I been so enamored by anyone.” He said sweetly, and at the moment, Saro meant his words, though if his track record was any indicator, the feelings would fade, and he would be gone within a few days. As much as he yearned for love, he was not great at sticking with it. Eventually even the most beautiful women and men would grow boring and tedious and he would be off to find his next adventure elsewhere. It was how he was, but for the moment neither of them needed to think such things, for now, Saro’s heart belonged to this beautiful young woman who was not afraid of brothels and cared little for the thought of marrying for money or title.
He reached over for his cup of wine, holding it up for a toast.
“To finding true love.” He toasted, giving her a little grin before he downed the remaining liquid in the cup.

“A man without rank who can charm my mother would be a rare find, indeed,” Nia replied with a laugh, shaking her head and leaning into his touch as it trailed up her skin. “No matter the gold he had. Not that I doubt you, of course,” she added, winking. “But it’d be an unparalleled achievement if you should succeed.”
Playful eyes were veiled by thick lashes as he continued to speak, a smile curling plush lips with every word that spilled from his mouth. If only she could be taken away from this life, from the looming responsibilities that weighed on her and prevented her from doing that very thing. His speech was like spun gold, luring her in with the promise of adventure and excitement that she’d always longed for. The thought of sailing away with him and never turning back… she was sighing with longing by the time his lips pressed to hers, and for a moment, he was all that existed.
Nia melted beneath the caress of his mouth, fingers reaching to curl in his hair as the other hand came to rest against his cheek. There was a lingering sweetness in his kiss that already had her longing for more by the time he parted from her, half-lidded eyes lingering on his mouth as it pulled away. Another smile painted her face when his lips brushed her fingers instead, squeezing his hand where they came to rest on his knee. A charmer, he was, and lucky for him, he’d already found her weakness.
I have to admit, in these few short moments since I first saw you, you’ve captured my heart. Never have I been so enamored by anyone.
Her smile only grew, letting go of his hand just long enough for her to leave her own chair in favor of his lap. Was he only saying all of this to soften her up and make her more pliable to joining him in his bed later? It was possible; it wouldn’t be the first time a man had made such bold declarations of infatuation to her for that very reason. But honestly, Nia didn’t care. In the end, they both got what they wanted, even if it was only for a night.
Looping one arm around his shoulders, she grabbed her glass with the other and clinked it to his. “To finding true love,” she echoed his toast and drained her own glass before setting it back down on the table and trailing her now free hand down his face. Stopping at his jaw, she tilted his chin back to meet him in another kiss, letting this one linger a bit longer than the last before pulling back just enough to take a breath.
“Tell me more about how enamored you are,” she murmured with a soft laugh, brushing another kiss over his lips light as the touch of a butterfly’s wing. Her hand trailed through the silken strands of his hair like she’d been longing to do since they sat down, pressing her lips just below the bend of his jaw. “Tell me about the places we could go…”

“Tell me about the places we could go…”
“A man without rank who can charm my mother would be a rare find, indeed,” Nia replied with a laugh, shaking her head and leaning into his touch as it trailed up her skin.

He grinned. "Well in that case, I will have to impress you with my abilities to charm. Wouldn't be fun without a bit of a challenge." He replied back when she mentioned she would be impressed if he could charm her mother. There would be a chance he might fail, but he had to admit the prospect of attempting to do it was appealing to him, whether it would actually happen or not was a different story. He did not yet know if this was a one time thing or if the two would be seeing more of each other.
He was a little surprised as she moved to sit in his lap, but he was not complaining as he leaned back a little to make room for her to settle comfortably. His arms wrapped around her middle, holding her close and safely on his lap so she was not at risk of falling.
He gladly let her tilt his chin up, kissing her back as she connected their lips once more. He kept things soft and tender, enjoying their soft and sweet moment while they were surrounded by whores and those who sought out their company. This wasn't really the most romantic spot ever, but for the two of them it seemed to be more than romantic enough as they became lost in each other.
He loved the feeling of her hands in his hair, he was always partial to the feeling of someones hands in his hair, he wasn't sure why but it was one of his favourite things. She could probably see it on his face and his shoulders as they relaxed a little at the soft touch.
"Anywhere you wanted." He started when she asked him to tell her of the places they could go, in reality if she were to board his ship with him, it was the truth. They could sail almost any where, at least any where that was seaside.
“To Greece perhaps? Or some where further? There are plenty of lands past what you know. Lands with unique features, and people. The people are my favourite. To learn their languages, their beliefs and traditions. There is no better experience.” He said, one hand reaching up to cup her cheek as he spoke, truly sounding as if he wanted to whisk her away. And he might have, or at least in the moment he thought he might have. It was always his dream to find love with a person who would sail away with him, and it sounded as if she would be happy to leave her current life for new experiences.
"Tell me where you dream of going, and what you dream of seeing? Do you know much of the lands outside of your own home?" He asked curiously, wondering if she knew anything of people and lands beyond her own.

Anywhere she wanted.
Nia could hardly even conceive of where she would want to go. She knew little of the lands outside of Egypt, hearing only tales from those who passed through the port. Of course, she knew of Greece and its three kingdoms, but beyond that, she was sadly rather clueless. It was difficult for her to even imagine what such lands might look like, much less anything else about them. To see them for herself… It would be a dream come true.
Leaning into the hand cupping her cheek, she smiled and covered it with her own. Nia could lose herself in those liquid eyes if she stared long enough, though she’d happily accept such a way to drown. “Unfortunately, I find myself very ignorant of the lands afar,” she ruefully admitted with a twist of her mouth. “I’ve spent most of my life in Egypt, primarily in Cairo and Thebes, and I didn’t pay much attention to my geography lessons as a child. My father has traveled some, but he’s never deigned to take me with him. There was a man earlier this year who took me to Bedoa, but I did not get to see much. It was a… different kind of adventure.”
She did not linger long on that trip with Lukos. It seemed tacky to go into detail about her excursions with a previous lover while she sat in a different man’s lap. Brushing dark hair from Saro’s face, she smiled and leaned against him, imagining the possibilities she’d probably never get to see. Did she want to sail off with this stranger and see the world beyond? Of course she did. She longed for such excitement more than anything in the world. But would she? Could she? Those were the more important questions to answer. A few days down the Nile was one thing, but to cross the sea itself… She could not see her parents ever allowing such a thing.
But she could still pretend.
“I want to see the ocean,” she told him with another smile, taking one of his hands and intertwining their fingers. “The Nile is beautiful and I could frolic in her waters all day, but the sea… I can hardly imagine what it must be like to see nothing but water. I’ve heard tales, of course, but tales are nothing. I want to smell the brine, to taste the salt.”
She could almost taste it now just from speaking of it, a longing sigh parting her lips. “I want to hear new tongues and taste new foods. I want to feel different earth beneath my feet, and hear bird calls I never imagined.” Nia’s lips briefly pressed to Saro’s neck, nuzzling lightly against his jaw. “I dream of everywhere and everything, Saro. I dream of a world free of the cage of my birth.”
Raising her head to look at him, she tilted her head to the side with a considering expression. “Can I see your ship? I don’t think I could sail off quite tonight, but I’d at least love to board it.” Her lashes lowered in a wink. “Maybe tour the cabin, that sort of thing.”

He chuckled a little as she admitted of knowing little of lands outside her own. He wasn’t even slightly surprised, few cared to learn of lands outside of the ones where they lived, and for someone who claimed to want to travel and escape, she seemed happy being blissfully unaware of what waited outside her own home. He had seen it many times before, a woman who spoke of travelling to new places but would never go beyond their little bubble of comfort in life. Any thoughts of sweeping her off on his ship with him were lost immediately, she would remain in Egypt for her entire life, that much he was sure of. Whether or not he would remain with her was yet to be seen. Though he doubted that much of anything could force him to stay in one place and abandon the sea.
“Bedoa is one place I have not yet had the pleasures of visiting, though it is in my plans. Not much to be found for men of the sea in a vast desert.” He said with a little laugh, which was true. No one on his ship had any interest in visiting Bedoa, at least in Egypt they had a proper city with proper prospects for whores, drink and theft. Bedoa held no such things as far as any of them were aware of. Despite that, Saro was curious in nature, and planned to visit the lands some day in the hopes of learning more than he knew already.
He listened as she spoke of what she wished to see and the things she wished to experience. He couldn’t imagine her life, it was as distant and unreachable as his life was to her. To be stuck stationary, following the rules set by others, to be born into a role and expected to only be stuck in that role for your entire life. To Saro it was wrong, it was not the way life should be lived, and he would never be able to conform to any such thing.
“The ocean is like no other thing you will ever experience. The colours of the water, the call of the ocean birds, the temperament of the ocean herself… there is nothing else in life that could even compare.” He said, wistfully. He loved the water, and he loved sailing. He yearned to be out on the waves when ever he was on dry land, the thoughts of being on the ship in the back of his mind at all times.
He listened as she talked of seeing new things, and he held her closer as she nuzzled his neck.
“Those things are within reach, Nia. You need only gather strength to reach out and take them for your own.” He said, voice low so only she would hear. It wasn’t entirely and offer, but merely a suggestion. In reality, what was really stopping her from uprooting and following her dreams? Nothing. It wasn’t as if her parents were likely to follow if she were sail off away from Egypt.
He chuckled a little as she asked to see his ship, and he nodded.
“I could show you. The rest of the crew should be settled in a brothel or tavern for the night. Save for the bare bones crew left to watch the ship, it should be empty. I do not have a cabin of my own, I sleep among the rest of the crew, but I do know how to get into the Captains quarters, and the Captain himself will not be on the ship, so we can be alone there.” He explained. Only the current Captain had separate quarters, which meant it was his mother and father who slept there, but neither would be on the ship that night.
He pressed one last kiss to her lips before carefully standing them up.
“Come then, let us go to the ship.”
