That Narmer had good news to share was a rare instance. Or any news at all, for that matter. Ever since he had returned to resume his proper spot as Head of the Hei upon Narutt's passing, Narmer had had many forms of news. Most of them bad, throughout the course of his two years as Head. His brother's death not only left the Hei, but the care of his three young children and his sister-in-law in his hands, something that the young man had never prepared for. A man who happily caroused with his male friends as he joined them for military training, with no thoughts or inclination to want to lead a Hei, Narmer had been in now way prepared for leading a noble house.
But he was even more unprepared to try and get said noble house out of certain financial ruin, while trying to maintain their good family name in the process. That he had managed to somehow survive past the dinner the Pharoah had insisted he host was a magnificient feat in itself.
Yet somehow, the Gods had his favor. Narmer had awoken two mornings ago delighted to find a heavy sack of gold at the ends of his bed. While he would need far more then just that to handle many more affairs, he did the necessary ones first. Most had been handed over to the Hei's financial steward to ensure the important fixtures were replaced and fixed. Narmer directed most of it to go to the upkeep of the exterior of the saraayaa the family resided in. He had closed some of the saraaya's rooms, which helped to penny pinch, but the paint that was wearing off and rotting wooden windows had to be replaced if he had any hope of keeping up appearances.
Some of it had went to refurbishing the receiving room they had guests in, but the young man had kept a handful for himself, which was the whole reason for the summons he had sent out to his two nieces and nephew. He had gave some to his sister-in-law earlier to ensure servants were paid, but the rest was required... to upkeep appearances. Afterall, how could they say they were a respected Hei within Egypt if his nieces and nephew were still kitted in the same outfits everyday?
Now seated in the dining area (for the man had also closed off the study, since he could easily work wherever he had a table and a chair), he was busy perusing the ledges the Hei's financial advisor had recently handed to him. It was a long duty to check through where the money had gone over the past years he had been gone, and Narmer was growing cross eyed. A task that was long in the coming, it kept getting interupted by official business and other more pressing matters, and Narmer was only now just getting to the year he left, and yet found it increasingly frustrating that he found nothing. The remaining gold sat on his left in an unassuming small burlap sack, whilst he waited for the ones he had summoned.

The grand feast had gone off with out a major hitch, save for the Queen fainting and Kissan was relieved for his Uncle and the Hei in general that they had been able to pull it off. Kissan was annoyed that most of his night had been filled with tedious errands for his mother that should have been handled by servants but alas, with the tightening of funds, servants had been in shorter supply than a normal Hei of their standing.
Still he was thrilled to have heard the most important announcement of the night, Egypt was going to war! It was all that he could have hoped! A war! A path for him to make a name for himself and to bring glory to his Hei. No more need for tedious studies of clay tablets and symbols, stories of days long past. No he could become a soldier and no one would question his brilliance or honor.
It was no surprise then that Narmer summoned him and his sisters. Obviously Narmer was going to announce how their family would be assisting in the war effort. The girls were obviously going to keep assisting the royal family, they already had jobs and they seemed good at it. And with Narmer just getting the Hei back on its feet, he obviously couldn't take off for a war now, so Kissan would be the obvious choice! It was finally happening! After months, nay years of pleading, Kissan would finally enter the ranks of the great Egyptian army!
Kissan nearly slid into the kitchen, his excitement barely contained as he quickly found a place to sit and waited expectantly for his sisters. Why couldn't they be here already? Maybe Narmer would just tell him, just a hint, something before his sisters got there.
"Good Morning Uncle!" Kissan said, his excitement barely contained in his tone. "You summoned us?" he prodded just a bit, his voice eager and questioning.

She didn't often ger messages to return home, not since she had been taken into the Queen's household as a handmaid. There were times when her mother might ask about her but not really her uncle. She would be lying if she didn't admit that it may her stomach do a series of flip-flops over this but Saifya seriously doubted that her uncle had suddenly decided that she was suddenly worth the effort of some kind of seduction.
It was perfectly true that her own romantic heart wanted to have something like that but it wasn't going to happen.
Safiya had to believe that "Uncle! Good to see you, is this some kind of surprise?" she asked, smiling at him and being perfectly aware that she as being a little bit silly in asking but Safiya wanted absolutely nothing to do with displaying anything that could end up suggesting that she was not the same happy and go-lucky young woman that she had always been. Even if her world continued to end up absent the things - or rather the person - that she wanted most of all.
"I see you are as keen as ever!" she said, speaking to her brother directly and with a chuckle as much as the sparkle of mischief in her eyes at the same time, she couldn't help but want to tease her brother.

His nephew had walked in, but the excited gait in which Kissan entered his study had Narmer raising his brow, wondering what exactly had his nephew so excited. Narmer himself was, while in a great mood due to the injection of gold, found himself at odds with the annoucement of war by the Pharoah. A part of him itched to go, for that had been what he's trained for his whole life, to lay his life for the Kingdom. But responsibility was now a greater call with his brother gone, and that was why he had hung up his weapons for a pen and parchment, handling numbers he never wanted to handle to begin with.
"Yes, indeed I did. Take a seat first, while we wait for your sisters. Why the excitement so early in the morning, nephew?" he murmured in curiosity, raising a brow at Kissan. He had a soft spot for his nephew, for Kissan more or less had dogged his steps ever since his return from travelling. Narmer only wished he would get the ridiculous notion of going to war out of his head. With himself unmarried and still on the fence in regards to whether Kissan should inherit the Hei as Narutt would have wanted, he had no wish to send his nephew to certain death, and he was quite certain Na'meah shared his sentiments.
In no time at all, before Kissan could even respond, Safiya came running in, and he greeted the first-to-arrive twin with a gentle smile as he nudged another chair for her to sit in, nodding. "To a certain extent, as long as - ah, there you are Sameera." he murmured, when the last of his brother's children arrived. To say that Narmer did not feel affection for them would be a lie, for he had been raised by Narutt together with them... but to now be responsible for them was a foreign feeling he had yet to properly grasp, and narmer still worked on it.
Shaking that thought from his head, he closed the parchment he had been working on earlier once Sameera had seated herself next to Safiya. A twinkle sparked in his eye as he flashed each of his brood a smile, before pulling out a heavy sack which he opened to reveal the little gold coins. "We seemed to have come into some fortune, from a benefactor who wished not be named. Now I know we all have had some constraints lately, so I'd like all of you to robe yourself with some new material. Especially you Safiya, with your position as the Queen's handmaiden, do not let your clothes betray your loyalty to the royal family." he doled out a handful of coins to each of his brother's children, and then directed the next words at Kissan. "The war the Pharoah has summoned would mean we would have plenty of meetings in the following months. Kissan, you will attend to the Pharoah's requests together with me when we visit the Evening Star Palace, so ensure you have the appropriate clothes for that, jewelry and all."

This was going to be the day. He just knew it. When Narmer looked at him curiously Kissan marveled at how calm and composed his uncle could be. The time, though perhaps short, in the Pharaoh's court showed,Narmer could only conclude. His uncle was hiding his knowledge of just why Kissan would be so excited. Well played.
As his sister's emerged and found their seats, Kissan could not help but exchange a grin with Safiya. She knew, surely she knew of what he was awaiting and would soon be granted.
He would be the best soldier in the Egyptian army. He would restore the family name. Who would dare speak ill of the Haikaddad's when he was a war hero? He would leave Narmer to take care of the financials and restore the wealth of the house as was obviously Narmer's specialty. Yes, this would all work out perfectly!
As Narmer began to talk of finances and mysterious benefactors, Kissan's face grew a bit confused but he decided it was merely his uncle being his normal, occasionally droning self. His face regained its eagerness and he awaited the conversation to take its natural course back to him.
He smiled at his sisters as they each received their portions of the funds and was fully expecting his uncle to now speak of using his portion to outfit him for the army when, the conversation decidedly did not go in that direction.
His face clouded over briefly at his uncle's direction. Meetings. He was to make sure he was properly outfitted to attend meetings. His heart was in his throat and anger rose under his skin. Of course. How stupid had he been? His uncle would not suddenly change his mind just because the Pharaoh had engaged in a most noble war. No, the man who had run from the family and abandoned them would now use his responsibilities at the house to hide from the war and keep Kissan hidden with him! He looked between his uncle and his sister's briefly, unsure of how to respond without letting his feelings pour out of him like scarab beetles from a pot.
Gathering the coins slowly and then standing abruptly he gave a quick nod of his head to Narmer. "Thank you. Uncle" he said a bit tersely. "I will do as you ask" he said with a jerky nod. With a forced smile, he made a respectful half bow and turned, exiting the room and the house with every intent of leaving before anyone could catch him.

That his nephew and nieces did not know him as well as Narmer had expected was clearly no one else's fault but his own. He was the one who had decided disappearing from his own family the moment the Sirdar position fell upon his shoulders. The man had been younger then, but he had returned intending to at least right the wrong that had happened due to his departure. Yet many seemed to assume he had returned because he wanted to be a Sirdar, like his brother had been.
They couldn't be further from the truth.
In fact, Kissan and himself were more alike then the young Haikaddad offspring knew. Narmer had had grand plans to be a general, perhaps even be a trusted one under the Pharoah. He felt way more confident wielding a sword then he ever would wielding a pen, but the Gods had a funny way in giving someone exactly what they didn't want. As it is, Narmer still found himself honor bound to eventually return the Hei to the hands of Kissan, as he thought Narutt would definitely want. He had yet to have that conversation with his sister in law, but Narmer intended to speak with Na'meah once he had sorted out the plans of his supposed marriage. A marriage he was going through just to save his Hei.
Expecting the three young ones to be happy with the funds at least, sure enough the twins lighted up at the prospect of money available for them to adorn themselves, and Narmer smiled in accordance as they started drawing up plans for what they would wear and buy. They were his two greatest chess pieces. A marriage would be beneficial for the Hei, and the twins would fetch a beautiful dowry that Narmer was not going to squander any chance he got.
Looking up when Kissan stood abruptly, Narmer leaned back a little in surprise when he noted his nephew's terse tone, before reminding himself of what exactly Kissan had told him when Narmer had first returned to the Hei and household. Kissan wanted to be in the military, a wish Narmer would never grant. A life in the military was dangerous, a risk he could not let the only heir to his brother's legacy take.
"Kissan." he murmured, just loud enough so his voice would still his nephew's steps b efore the younger one left the room. It was a tone rarely heard, so the twins piped down at the sudden, serious tone Narmer's voice had taken as he stood up. For a lingering moment, the man simply looked at his nephew, whether or not the other turned around would do nothing to change his countenance as his brows furrowed before he spoke. "One day, your father would like you to take over the Hei, of that I'm sure. It is my duty to see you prepared for it." With those words, he waved off the twins as they too asked for their departure, before he was left alone again.
Alone with ledgers he struggled to understand and politics he was just coming to grasp with.
