Evening fell on the tavern district and a small group of boys aged fifteen to eighteen wandered their way through the streets. A mix of those of noble birth and those who served them, rank and title mattered little to them as they caroused through Cairo's seedier district. They had been released from their familial duties and the boys were thoroughly enjoying the evening on the town. Jokes and jabs flew freely but like puppies at play they all knew not to jab too deep and truly offend. It was a fragile peace but a necessary one for their continued camaraderie.
As the sun continued its downward journey for the evening, lamps and fires were lit along the streets. Some for light, some for warmth from the desert as the day's heat seeped away. Fireflies from the nearby Nile flew their way around the streets, darting here and there. Were it not for the raucous behaviors around them as the squalid side of Cairo woke from its daily rest, it might have seemed almost beautiful or idyllic.
The boys, unaffected by the squalor around them, continued on their way happily as they observed the patrons of taverns and brothels alike spill out around them at every turn. Occasionally one or two boys would be pulled aside by whores or drunks, but with quick wits and quicker feet, they usually found their way back to the herd with little harm done.
Kissan was happily in the middle of the group, joking and spatting with his friends, happy to be away from his Hei and at least as far as he could see, away from the expectations placed on his young shoulders. His Uncle Narmer was still getting used to being back and having the reins and the same could be said of Kissan and his sisters. As such, getting out and about was healthy for the mental health of all of them. His sisters had their own distractions and releases, but for Kissan, getting out with his friends was the best medicine.
The young man was laughing at a off color joke made by one of the other boys when he saw the most magical creature appear in the light of one of the lamps hanging from a doorway. Her skin was lighter than his but still with hints of melanin. Her hair was dark but also had red in the candlelight like the red mud on the banks of the Nile. Freckles, like spots on a cheetah, adorned her face with such elegance that Kissan found himself stopped in his tracks, staring at her in such awe that the boys moved around him and down the street with no notice from him. Her body, lithe like the gazelles he hunted. Her eyes, they sparkled like jewels on his father's ceremonial chest pieces. Time stopped and in the moment their eyes met, he felt such elation and sudden warmth despite the cool fall night. His chest rose and fell and he felt paralyzed in this gaze, unsure of what magical creature he was truly beholding.
The spell was broken as he was jostled by another traveler on the street and as she seemed to turn to go he nearly launched forward with a sudden, desperate need to know who she was. "Wait! Wait please!" he called out as he moved towards her, pushing aside another wandering who was suddenly blocking his view.

It had only been a few days since Deshra had been moved to Cairo. From what she could gather, her owner was looking to aim for a higher class of clientele, a move that Deshra wholeheartedly approved of. The more money that she could bring in, the more stable her job security. Of course, that was only the rumor. It wasn’t like this decision had been discussed with her. The only frustrating thing about moving to a new city was that she had to establish an entirely new base of clients, and that meant getting the word out that she was here and that she was for sale.
That evening found herself out on the street near her brothel, trying to find a potential mark. She wore a simple sheer tunic that displayed her body, leaving only the minutest of questions about her body. Her hair had been oiled to a sheen but was worn down, on full display. Her exotic red hair was one of her most lucrative features, and she always made sure it was as visible as possible. Her wide, brown eyes were accentuated by a thick layer of kohl worn to make them stand out, yet the rest of her skin was left untouched, the freckles another exotic feature that was likely to attract a man.
As she walked through the area, she looked around for her next potential target. She passed by a group of cheerful, joking young men without a second glance. Men that young usually didn’t have the money to pay what she charged. Nor did they usually care to. Without much experience, any girl would do. To be honest, she didn’t prefer younger men anyway. While it wasn’t her place to have much of a preference, younger men rarely had the experience for both people in the pair to have a good time.
Deshra wouldn’t have even given the young men a second thought if one of them hadn’t called out to her. There was something about the tone in his voice that gave her pause. A certain sort of desperation. She knew what that meant, it meant an opportunity that could be exploited, that is if he had money of any sort. Well, that would soon be obvious enough. She turned towards the source of the voice with a curious smirk on her face. There he was, young definitely, but with the clothing of a rich man, and therefore worth the bother to talk to. The look in his eyes, like a starving man looking at a feast. It was almost too easy.
“Did you mean me?” She asked adopting an air as if she was startled and flattered that he was asking after her. He seemed young and innocent enough that she wouldn’t want to come on too strong. It was best for his own pride as a man to let him think that he was the one pursuing instead of the prey.

She stopped. Her movements once more mimicking a gazelle upon the grasslands. Head held high, limbs ready for movement. And yet there was no fear in those eyes. He dared not look away from her lest she disappear into the city like the dust devils he'd chased as a child. His chest puffed slightly as he realized that he had her attention. Moving confidently towards her, he heard the boys disappearing around the corner but paid them no mind.
"Yes" he responded firmly, firmer than one would expect for his age but perhaps being the heir to a hei did that to a young man. "Yes, you" he said, his lip curling into a smile as he stepped forward, his voice a bit gentler, as if to keep her from bolting.
"You're new..." he noted as he drew another step or two closer. "I haven't seen you here before." His eyes traveled slowly down from her face and then back up again. She was gorgeous. She was special. "Where are you from?" he uttered curiously. He was trying very hard to sound like he was in control here but he knew that she need only try to leave and he would lose that in an instant. It was a dangerous game this cat and mouse. He had to know who and what she was. He had never seen such a creature before in his life and for once he wondered if this is what his father had felt upon seeing his mother. This creature was unlike any Egyptian woman he had ever seen.
Drawing a bit closer, his tone softened a bit further. "Your name?" He inquired. "Or does a goddess such as yourself not give that out to mere mortals?" he asked, a hand upon his chest, a charming smile upon his face.

It was so adorable that Deshra had to hold her composure not to laugh at the boy's eagerness. No, that would have ruined the magic of the moment. Instead, she turned her amusement into a shy smile. She looked down as he approached, then glanced up at him through her eyelashes.
She took a step back as if she was uncertain about the approach of this man. Her motion away carefully calculated to draw him in closer. The tenderness in his voice told her that he was looking for a girl that he could take care of, so she let herself slip into that roll. She was a new girl in town who could use someone to help her grow accustomed to the hustle and bustle of the capital. In reality, Alexandria was just as busy and bustling as Cairo, but he didn't have to know that was where she was from.
"Oh, yes. I only just arrived in Cairo. It's all still very new to me." Thus time when he stepped towards her she didn't step away. Instead, tilting her head to look up at him curiously. "I haven't seen you before either, but I suppose I wouldn't have… " She looked down again, her voice trailing off almost wistfully. She wanted him to believe that she was disappointed that they hadn't met before.
She laughed softly and blushed as he asked for her name. The comparison to a goddess was hardly original but he seemed so proud of himself that she had to let him believe that it had worked. "My name is Deshra." She looked up at him with a smile, but then her smile faded and she looked down and away, taking a step back. "I am no goddess, I work here." She glanced up at the brothels surrounding her before staring back at the ground. She sounded almost ashamed of her job. Deshra was, in fact, no way ashamed, but she often found that the younger clients liked to think of her as much more innocent than she actually was.

It was working, she was obviously charmed. He made a mental note that this tactic worked and tried desperately to keep his calm. "Only just arrived?" he asked curiously, "so you haven't seen the view from the look out..." he trailed off before adding "though, it hardly compares to you" he admitted with a flattering smile.
Don't ruin it. Don't seem too eager. She was so beautiful. Her skin looked so soft this close. Her lips. Her eyes. Everything about her was so perfect.
"Deshra" he repeated gently, his eyes drinking in her face, not wandering anywhere else for once and frowning slightly as she said she was no goddess and looking down at the ground. His eyebrow furrowed and he reached forward gently to bring a finger to her chin, drawing it upward and hoping to catch her beautiful eyes once more. "one's employment does not cancel out divinity" he said softly, his smile kind.
"Have you seen the city yet? I could show you around..." he offered with a quick swallow before connecting what she had said earlier. She was working. She was working for a brothel. Brothel owners were notoriously stingy with their 'employees'. He sensed a protest and quickly produced a few coins from his purse, "You won't get in trouble, I can pay..."
Was she wavering? Did she think him too young for her time? Did she think he would would disapprove of her profession? "Please.." he said quietly. "You would honor me with your time" he spoke earnestly. Was she a whore? Yes, technically. Was she still the most gorgeous woman he had every seen? Yes, she was.

Deshra could hardly believe how far gone this boy already was. It was almost sweet in a certain way but so naive of the ways of the world. If she could appreciate one thing about having to work for whatever she had in life was that she would never be this pathetic to fall for something like this. Love was only a weakness that other people could use to exploit you. She intended to take full advantage of this fact.
She looked up at him, hopefully as he fawned on her. She played the part of a girl who might be swayed by a day away from the brothel. She almost lost her composure for a moment as he mentioned paying just to take her out to show her around the city, incredulous at the idea that he would be so eager to pay a prostitute just to spend time with him. But she quickly hid the flash of emotion behind a wide smile. “Oh, of course, I’d love to see the city!” she said brightly, before letting her face fall a little. “But could you afford it?” she asked furrowing her brow with a bit of worry. Of course, he could, at least by the clothes that he wore, and she intended to see just how far she could push that.
The fact that he had opened the question of money right off the bat gave her the confidence to reach for a high price. “It’s only that...are you sure you have enough money?” she asked still looking worried. “It’s just my boss can get angry if we don’t bring enough.” She then quoted him a price that was above her normal rate, and even that was on the expensive side for a brothel worker. She worked at an upscale place after all. To seal the deal, she stepped forward and took his hand. “I so wish that we could spend the day together though. It would be so nice to see more of Cairo than just these few streets.” She tried to look as pitiful as she said that. Let him think she was some poor girl who had never seen the world outside her brothel. That would make him feel sorry enough for her that he’d be willing to spend more.

Kissan's face lit up as she said she would love to see the city but then fell quickly again as she wondered aloud if he would be able to afford it. The hei was not in the best of places financially and Kissan was not carrying an abundance of coinage.
"Well I..." he faltered slightly as she drew nearer and took his hand. "Um" he mentally tallied the coinage in his purse versus what she had quoted. "Well it is late" he noted and glanced around at the oil street lamps and fireflies. "Could I perhaps just..have an hour of your time? I could show you my favorite place nearby and then perhaps I could come back another time and show you more?" he offered.
"You will still be here?" he asked suddenly as if afraid that if he left her side she would disappear into the mists that rolled off the Nile and become once more the dream she seemed. Why did his mouth suddenly seem so dry? Had time slowed down?
His eyes seemed locked on hers and for a few moments the ruckus of Cairo's brothels seemed to quiet. He waited for her response and wondered if he had perhaps blown his chance. Would she think him too poor for the likes of her? Or perhaps too young? Her beauty was beyond compare and yet he was not immediately drawn to try and woo her in the way he might try his luck with others. He wanted to actually get to know her. A dangerous proposition for his coin purse indeed.

Maybe she had been too hasty to have quoted such a high price for her services to the boy. From the look in his eyes, he would have paid anything just to spend some time with her, but that wouldn't change how much money he actually had to spend. Though she might have more flexibility than just what he had in his coin purse. From his dress, he seemed to come from a respectable enough family that he might be used to purchasing on credit. Of course, that was always a dangerous prospect for a whore out on her own. If the family didn't wish to pay, it was just her word against his. At the brothel itself, where there were legitimate witnesses, it was another matter. She'd save the question of credit for another day. No matter, she had ways to salvage the matter of tonight’s price now. Hopefully, a way that was sure to guarantee a repeat customer.
Deshra let her, face fall into disappointment as Kissan suggested that they could only spend an hour together that evening, "Well maybe... " she trailed off looking conflicted. “It's just…” She looked up at him through her eyelashes. "I had hoped we might have had longer." She looked down quickly as if she was flustered. If she let him think she liked him back, then he would definitely have to return. And it would justify the price cut she was about to make. "Maybe I could stay just a bit longer for the same price," she said nervously, trying to give the impression that she was willing to risk getting in trouble to spend time with him. In truth, she was not planning on spending enough time with him to go below her normal rate.
She smiled demurely and looked up at him again as he worried that he might not be able to see her again. "Oh no, I' m not going anywhere.” That was true as far as she knew, but she'd never been privy to when she would be sold before. Then again, if she was moved somewhere else, it would hardly matter that she had told one small lie to a man she'd never see again. If you ever need me, you can find me at The Golden Garden" Deshra glanced down again. "And what if I should ever need to find you?” She asked hesitantly. Let him think she was just a girl taking an interest, but it was always good to know where one's money was coming from and how to track it down fit wasn't arriving promptly.

As her eyes fell he felt his heart fall as well as if to catch her. She seemed to reconsider her price and had he been a more prudent man he might have seen a chance to negotiate her even lower. Yet a bargain wasn't what he was looking for.
Still he felt a smile of relief at spending more time with her for the coinage that was currently in his purse. "That would be..." he paused and looked down at her a bit cautiously. "Would that be safe for you?" he asked earnestly. He didn't want to get her in trouble.
When she noted that she would indeed still be there and would not be disappearing into the mists as he had feared he seemed to release a breath of relief. As she asked where she might find him, his eyes narrowed slightly with the normal suspicion one of his station might view on a question of that nature. Still it came with a reddish blush upon his darkened cheeks that she would want to know this. "Oh I'm around, I live in Cairo" he offered, unsure if it was safe to admit just what house exactly she could find him in. Still as she looked up at him, her eyes so sweet and deep, he could not help but feel his resolve fold. "If..you have need of me" he smiled charmingly "just send for Kissan H'Haikaddad" he finished gently.
He swallowed slightly and felt himself becoming lost in those large, expressive eyes and after a moment he seemed to find himself once more. "Well then..." he trailed off and chuckled nervously. "Shall we? It's this way" he noted down one of the streets to the east.

It showed just how smitten the boy already was that he didn’t even try to negotiate when she lowered the price. In fact, he seemed hesitant to even take her up on the offer to spend more time with him at the same price. Deshra resisted the urge to smile at this victory. She had him completely taken in. This was almost too easy. Were she a better woman, she might have almost felt guilty at taking advantage of such a naive young man. Luckily for her coin purse, she wasn’t a better woman.
Deshra looked up at him after he asked if she would be safe. “I think so,” she responded uncertainly. It was best to let him think that she was willing to take a risk to be with him. In reality, as long as she brought it money, her owner didn’t care how she spent her time. She smiled shyly at him before glancing back at the ground. It was best not to come across too strong if she wanted him to chase her, and that was exactly the trap she was laying.
Deshra looked up at him and leaned in, smiling as he mentioned his name. She wanted “Oh, you’re from a noble family!” she exclaimed excitedly as if she didn’t already know that from the clothing and the way he comported himself. She could spot a noble just from the way they walked down the street. Then she looked back down as if embarrassed by her outburst. “It’s just I don’t meet many.” This was another lie, she did have many clients from the upper classes of Cairo. Still, she’d do what she could to flatter him, it did a man’s ego good to impress a woman.
Kissan pointed her down a street, and she smiled broadly and followed him. As they walked she glanced at the scenery around them, stealing furtive glances back at Kissan from time to time. She was trying to give the impression of a girl with a crush. As they walked she drew closer to him, then glanced over for a second and took his hand. She immediately dropped it and then looked away as if she couldn’t believe that she could be so bold. “I’m sorry,” she said quickly, adding an awkward giggle.

As they walked silently down the street, Kissan glanced at her occasionally and found himself blushing when his eyes met hers. She seemed so shy an innocent. Some small voice in the back of his head wondered how much of an act maybe this was but he brushed it off as quickly as it came. She had said she'd met few nobles. He supposed perhaps that was true. She had indicated she was new to the area so perhaps that was why.
His eyes jerked to her when he felt her hand and there was a flash of suspicion and concern. Was she trying to rob him? Surely not... he watched her for a moment as they continued to walk and her head dipped in a quick apology. He glanced around quickly to make sure there was no danger before his face shifted into a kind smile at her. "No apologies" he said softly and with a look of mischief, reached out for her hand and snagged it. "Come on, this way" he noted in a conspiratorial tone before breaking into a jog and taking her down a side road that led towards the edge of the city.
With some quick turns here and there, soon they emerged out near an overlook near the docks. The normal loud shouting and bickering of dockworkers had died down and all that could be heard was the soft sound of water lapping at the boats and water birds swooping and bickering.
The sun was letting go of its last grasp of day in the distance and the red and golds could still be seen against the sky as darkness and stars gobbled their way to their victory.
"Have you ever seen anything so beautiful?" Kissan uttered softly as he moved to sit and watch the sun finish its decline.

Deshra noted with some concern as Kissan pulled away slightly as her hand approached, but she didn’t react to that, it would have just drawn attention that the behavior concerned her. Had she laid it on too thick that it wasn’t believable? Admittedly, the innocent whore act was a bit of an unbelievable one, and yet, it was one that men often wanted to be true enough that they would forget all rational thought on the matter. She kept her eyes lowered as she considered her next move. How could she portray a character that might be a bit more believable to this naive noble without alerting him to this change of strategy?
As it turned out, that wasn’t necessary. The man seemed to have hit upon a new strategy to impress her. Any thoughts of awkwardness were long passed as he moved to take her hand, pulling her through the streets of Cairo. Deshra wasn’t sure where he was taking her, but Deshra wasn’t complaining. This change of scenery was the most interesting thing she’d done since she’d been in Cairo.
As they went, Deshra quickly tried to memorize the twists and turns of the city. It always helped to be able to know how to find your way back on your own if things went south. Not that she expected it of Kissan, but she knew better than to underestimate just how quickly a client’s temperament could change. As they emerged from behind one of the buildings to a view overlooking the docks, the frantic rush of business now dying along with the light. Now it looked peaceful. The sky colored by the last few fading lights of the sun, while the old stone pyramids stood watch.
“Yes, it’s beautiful,” she said breathlessly, not even needing to act. It was the nicest thing that she’d seen in a long time. She squeezed his hand in hers gently. “Thank you for bringing me here.” She looked up at him, trying to catch his eye. That was an added flourish on the top to make it seem genuine. Technically she didn’t need to thank him for anything. She was the one doing him a favor, and he was the one paying her for it.

Kissan found himself watching her face more than the sunset, but even so, he still did not believe he'd ever seen anything so beautiful in his life.
"So tell me about yourself" he said gently. "Where are you from? I've never seen anyone with such beauty" he noted genuinely and took one hand and slowly touched the tight curls of her red hair. He wanted to touch the freckles too but felt too self conscious to go that far. He blushed and pulled his hand away. "Sorry" he mumbled.
He nodded towards the ships bobbing on their tethers. "Have you been on one of the ships? Seen more of this great land?"
He listened attentively to each of her answers. His eyes following her own, her face, her lips, the way her freckles moved as she spoke. He was bewitched and his heart was so damn loud as he struggled to commit the tone and lyric of her voice to memory.
He did not know truly if he would have the money to spend many evenings like this with her and so he wanted to remember every moment of this one.

Deshra had never had a job this easy before. She was almost starting to find herself bored. Sure the naive girl embarrassed about her job was an act, but to be honest, she found that kind of person grating. She’d known enough of those young wide eyed type girls. They never seemed to last very long.
Deshra was almost surprised that the man wanted to know more about her history. It was largely boring. Certainly more boring than her looks would suggest. Had this been a normal encounter, she might have spun him a story about some foreign land where all the women had hair as red as the desert sand, and skin as spotted as a cheetah, but she knew what he wanted was honesty. He wanted to believe that she was a real person, not some fantasy character. Little did he know that this was all an act.
Deshra laughed a bit as she said “I’m from Alexandria.” She grinned a bit at his reaction. “Not some exotic far off land like you expected, I’ll take it. As for my beauty, I suppose you can say I was blessed by the gods.” Or more likely she was fathered by some red haired, freckle faced foreigner from one of the far off northern lands where everyone was so pasty white they were practically see through. She’d met a few of that type when she was working in Alexandria. The port city got all sorts of foreigners. That was a much less interesting story though.
“I was on a boat when I came to Cairo. I can’t say I cared for it that much.” She had found the rocking of the boat unsettling. She much preferred solid land under her feet. That way she knew which way was up. Deshra had lost a lot of her feigned shyness as she talked. It was so tiring pretending to be naive. Besides, to him it would probably appear that she was opening up.

He listened as she spoke as if he were in a trance. His eyes watching the way her mouth moved with the words, the way her freckles danced upon her skin. Her smile was contagious and he found his smile moving to match it even when he might not have otherwise. This creature was truly beautiful.
Her story of her origins and how she'd arrived here were less exciting than he had hoped yet he was not disappointed for his true goal had been simply to keep her talking. He continued his efforts for some time, asking her this question or that, always entertained and amused by her answers despite himself. He was not naive to the fact that her answers were broad and somewhat evasive but he supposed such was not uncommon for a woman of the night. After all, a woman such as that had reason to ensure no customer would have anything to track her down or harm those few she might care for. No, she was as cautious as a wild doe and he did not blame her.
Whenever she asked him questions about himself he would answer as truthfully as possible while trying to skate past specifics. Just as she had to be wary of blackmail, as a noble's son so must he.
And so it was they spent a perfectly benign evening learning so much about the other while in truth learning very little of substance. He wondered if she'd open up more to him if he was able to visit her more and yet he feared the answer was no.
As the darkness enveloped them, he knew he needed to get home lest Narmer would worry. He inquired where she wished to be returned to and made sure she arrived there safely. Her hair still seemed to have a glow in the lamp lights and her eyes never lost their sparkle.
Before he turned to leave, he turned to look at her once more. "May I write?" he asked as if begging a favor from a goddess herself.
