In Damascus, even the merchant stores are quiet, orderly spaces. Although there are shops for all, many feature intricate scrollwork and meticulously bound books, often catering to the scholarly pursuits of Damascus’s private populace. Wares are displayed with precision out front, while the back of the store is reserved as a warehouse space or workshop. It is expected that one keeps an air of quiet about themselves here, as the Damascene people are quiet and hold their books in great regard. One does not wish to be seen disrespecting their work.
