Celine arrived at the restaurant with five minutes to spare- a miracle, she thought. considering her taxi had stalled. She hoped Max wouldn't notice how icky she felt and that her dress didn't look sweaty. and that she still smelled okay. She opened her purse and spritzed her usual strawberry-scented perfume just in case. She didn't mind when he sweated, but that was her excuse- sweat smelled masculine to her. She couldn't wait for the play, but one of the main reasons she'd picked one she'd seen before was so they could spend the evening snuggling (among other things) instead. If it had been up to her psyche, she'd probably have just invited him over for a Netflix or Hulu binge, but despite the fact that her nightmares had returned for the past couple of nights, she knew she needed to get out of the house. A play it was.
After the taxi let her out, she crossed the street to the restaurant and sat on the bench out in front of it to wait for Max. A small pot of flowers was beside it, and it looked as if someone must have left them there recently.
"Poet's narcissus!" she whispered with a dreamy smile. So he'd remembered her favorite flower, after all! Maybe he wasn’t quite as thickheaded as he seemed- or was some of that a result of his mental and physical scars? It was hard to tell sometimes, but Celine had some scars of her own. Being the speechwriter for the UN secretary-general as well as an ambassador’s daughter put the kind of information that might potentially endanger her life at her fingertips, and she suspected that her life was perhaps in more danger now than it had been since she was ten.
But back to him. If Max was this romantic now she couldn’t imagine what it would be like in the future. It seemed every time she went out with him, he insisted on topping the date before. Perhaps she was being modest, but there were times when she really did feel she wasn’t worth quite so much fuss. Still, after a work week like this one, it was nice to feel cared for and even spoiled a little. She picked up the flowerpot and put it in her lap while waiting for him.

"There she is,"
Two men watched Celine in their Black SUV, one of them: A large bald man with a black beard took a long drag from his cigarette blowing smoke on to the windshield wiper. "For fucks sake!" the driver said hastily parting the smoke with his bony hands. He was a skinny man with sleek blonde hair and a lean face, his eyes were obscured by dark sunglasses as his thin eyebrows formed into a frown.
"Could it kill ya not to obscure our vision Mike?!" the driver growled. "If ya at least wanna smoke roll down the window!"
"My bad Elton," The large dark skinned man rolled down the window letting the smoke come out from the window. "So that's Celine? Huh?" he asked. "She's pretty cute with her long flowy green dress. I can see her cleavage starting to poke out a bit."
"Yup," Elton leaned against the buttery chair. "She got some flowers as well? The boss got some flowers planted in the alleyway as well."
"Why the fuck would he do that?" Mike asked taking another drag this time blowing the smoke out from the window.
"Who the fuck knows?" Elton said. "Maybe we can trap her that way, but our mission is clear. Kidnap the daughter of Cassander, that bastard has been saying some unpopular things about our boss and is looking like he is about to make deals certain people that he doesn't like. With Celine's kidnapping, we can make sure that Cassander will think twice before doing anything that falls out of line."
"Shit," Mike said. "Cassander got a lot to answer for, don't mind me a kidnapping just make sure that I get paid for this shit."
"Boss always pays," Elton replied looking around the restaurant. "There's a lot of people tonight," he muttered. "Got to make sure it's clear before moving in."
Just then Celine's cellphone began to ring and a text popped up on her phone: "Hey Celine! Meet me at Western! I got a surprise for you!"

Celine opened her phone to read the text. "Western," she muttered. "Huh. I do wish I'd gotten that text before the taxi had stopped. It must have been lost in cyberspace somewhere. Oh well, I don't mind walking."
She texted Max: "Be there in ten minutes tops. The taxi let me off at the wrong place, so I'll have to walk. Meanwhile, thanks for the flowers. Love you more than 10,000x!" Stretching to her full height, she left the flowers on the bench to get when she would return, picked one out to put in her hair, and then gathered up her purse. She noticed a trail of flowers leading away from where the pot had been and decided to follow it. "Looks like someone dropped a few," she observed. "Too bad. They're so pretty. Some klutz even seems to have dropped some in the alleyway. Oh well, maybe I can rescue them," she decided, heading toward where the flower farthest away seemed to be. "It'll get me closer to Western, too. I wonder what else Max has up his sleeve?" Flowers, dinner, a play, and whatever happened to take place after- she bit her lip to hide a smirk- were more than enough, really! She absolutely must tell him he was going overboard and would have her love regardless of whatever he did on their next date. And she would. Later. Might as well enjoy herself after this crazy week, right?
She hummed to herself as she proceeded to try to find every flower planted in the alleyway. She might not be able to put them all in water at the moment, but at least they might make him think she smelled better than she actually did.

"She's moving," Mike got out of the car putting cigarette out and checked his leather black jacket for his Pistol. "Hey," Elton also got out of the SUV staring at Mike. "No lethal force, boss wants to bring Celine back nice and healthy."
"It's just in case," Mike shrugged. "Why do you think she moved?"
"Probably she's meeting her boyfriend," Elton replied. "In any case let's follow her."
Trying to act as discreet as possible, the men blended with the crowd as they kept a close eye on Celine. She seemed to be headed up Western Avenue, Mike and Elton made sure to keep a safe distance between themselves and her so they wouldn't scare her off. "We're gonna have to deal with the boyfriend," Mike muttered. "Like I said I can blow his fucking brains out."
"Don't wanna make a scene," Elton muttered. "So stop thinking with your fucking gun Mike. We'll have to deal with him the old fashion way."
"Whatever you say Elton," Mike rolled his eyes watching Celine take a sharp turn into an alleyway. "What the hell?" He said raising an eyebrow. "She's going into the alleyway."
"Strange....." Elton shrugged his shoulders. "But I'll take it it's easier to trap her into a narrow area. Besides her ass will have no where to run once we corner her."
"Sounds good," Mike shook his head. "This Celine chick is making it pretty easy."
The two men approached the alley way where they saw Celine continue to pick the white flowers that appeared before her. Where did these flowers come from they did not know, but they were thankful that it lead Celine away from the crowd. Elton turned to Mike giving him a curt nod, they liked using intimidation to scare their victims. They were taller than the average person and they both towered over Celine. The more they take away their space, the more scared they were.
Walking side by side together, Mike and Elton slowly and carefully approached Celine from behind while she was continuing picking flowers.

It was not enough to keep her from hearing the footsteps, and she did startle a bit before she relaxed. It was probably just Max coming to play the guessing game. It had taken her forever to get used to that- someone putting their hands over her eyes and saying 'Guess who?' but she finally had. Celine had a severe phobia of touch by strangers. It wasn't that she hated being touched by any means, but to her, what other people referred to as 'personal space' was quite literally personal space. If Celine let a person touch her, it meant that she trusted them beyond all doubt, especially since the fire which had destroyed her childhood home and could have been politically motivated arson.
"I know it's you, Maximus," Celine said with a grin and a provocative little wink. "Come out and show yourself!"
She didn't think she'd ever needed him more than after the last couple of days, mentally or physically. The nightmares didn't come as frequently as they had in her childhood and teen years, but after the things she'd been given to write about this week, memories she'd thought mostly gone raised the hair on the back of her neck. She'd told him about how odd it seemed every time the memories resurfaced, but other than a heightened sense of awareness given whose daughter she was, whom she worked for, and the things she knew, she usually felt no paralyzing fear anymore. If the nightmares had come for a couple of nights now, it probably meant she was just overly stressed, and most likely that would resolve itself greatly when she was in Max's arms.

The two men smirked at each other, the darkness had concealed their appearance so it was hard for Celine to see who they were. This was just too easy! Celine was an airhead. "Shall I?" Mike whispered smirking. "No go ahead," Elton replied sniggering. "We're not Maximus Celine," Mike said in a deep booming voice that sounded like rocks grinding against each other.
"We've come to collect you miss Celine. So why don't you come with us now."
Elton then slowly approaches Celine his hand reaching out for her gloved ones. "Don't try to resist," he said. "Other wise it's going to be harder for you."

"Get away from me!" she snapped out when she vaguely saw hands trying to reach for her. "I mean- don't worry- I'll go with you." For now, just placate them. They don't have to know you've been warned periodically off and on to expect something like this.
She at least tried to appear calmer than she actually felt, and her question, when it came, might have been considered logical enough. "You're absolutely sure it's me you want? Perhaps my father might be the one you're really after. What do you think I know that he might not?"
Best to keep them talking. It would give her time to think of a plan while letting them think she actually cared what they thought for enough time to come up with a decent way to escape them. Meanwhile, she tried not to think of what they wanted to 'collect her' in order to do. Filthy sleazebags! She felt like she needed a bath just because she was talking to them. Even with Celine's aversion to touch, that had never happened before.
"In the meanwhile, I might as well not give Maximus reason to worry." If all they wanted was her, why would they bother with him?
She texted a quick message: "Something came up. Emergency. I worried about Papouli as a child, but it's finally happened."
Max would know. 'Papouli' meant 'grandfather' in Greek, but the two letter p's made her think of the thing she feared most as an ambassador's daughter.
Kidnapping.
She knew, deep in her very bones, that it was happening. The question was, why, specifically why now? What did they think she would know now that it was possible she had not known as a child?
Oh Papa. Whatever you said did need to be addressed, but now I am in danger.
Was there a chance that she was going to need to marry to remain relatively protected?
Unless it was to Maximus, she sorely hoped not. The changes in her personality would need to be so severe to tolerate some random man touching her- let alone anything else- that she might not recognize herself anymore. And while the old Celine before the fire would probably never quite return, she had gotten used to the new one just fine. But she wasn't sure she could bear to lose herself again, not ever. Once was disorienting enough. Twice might very well be unbearable.

Celine was screamed at first warning them to stay away. Instinctively Mike reached for his pistol which was tucked safely inside his jacket pocket but managed to calm down when Celine said that she would go with them. "See girl?" Elton said smiling. "Just come with us and don't cause trouble, this will all be over before you know it."
It was surprising that Celine was willing to come with the men, until she asked a question. "First rule Celine," Mike said. "Don't ask questions just come with us and keep your mouth shut."
It was then Celine took out her phone quickly texted somebody. Shit if she tried warn the cops, then this mission will take a bad turn fast. "Second rule!" Mike snatched the phone out of Celine's hand as soon as she sent her text. "Is to not use your fucking phone!" Mike threw Celine's phone deep into the alleyway. It landed with a small put noticeable crash. "You try to pull a fast one on us then your ass will be laying dead in a ditch."
Elton turned to Celine locking his covered eyes with her brown ones. "Come with us now," he whispered. "Don't do anything stupid again you got us? We're friendly people but don't mistake our kindness for weakness."
Mike gave Celine a soft push leading her out of the alleyway into the busy crowd. "Come on Celine," he whispered. "Don't do anything that'll warrant me to do something that you'll regret."
The SUV was not too far from here but the crowd made hard to make progress. Elton spotted a stoplight crossing ahead and motioned Celine to take a right. "If we cross the light," Elton whispered. "We avoid the crowd and keep an eye on you. Keep moving Celine now."
They were a few blocks away from an easy cash out. Celine better not fuck this up.

Ha! Celine thought. They probably thought I was texting the cops. Well, private eyes could theoretically have connections to the cops, but in a way, Max was one better. Cops were helpful when they could be, but someone with military training could pack quite a punch too, plus he loved her, something she didn't think any of the cops were aware of.
She did wonder just what they wanted her for, and why. Despite the two previous spectre- filled evenings, Celine wondered if just this once her reality might prove worse than her nightmares. Celine wasn't afraid of physical assault as much as some other things- small spaces, for one- but she wasn't not afraid of physical assault either. The way they'd told her not to ask questions after she asked why they didn't want her father brooked no argument.
Still, she did keep note of where she thought they'd tossed her phone- though she could hardly see even with the little bit of light it gave off. Maybe she could come back and get it, as long as she went no more than another block with them. Any more might cause an asthma attack since she'd have to run regardless if she wanted to stay ahead of them.
Asthma. In this new universe, that was what they called the lung problem she'd suffered all these years, and while things like tea still worked, some medicines called inhalers and bronchiodilators were much faster. It hadn't been smaller than average lungs after all. An inhaler, however, only worked as a rescue, so she didn't want to use it anymore than necessary even though in fact it might make running a little easier.
Now, where to get off? That would be easier if she recognized where they were going, She kind of did a little, but that didn't mean it was anywhere near where Max had wanted her to meet him.
Considering the previous two nights, she wondered how she hadn't seen this coming today. Then again, she hadn't seriously had to worry about it for years. She did have an emergency plan, but she was no longer sure it would work. If they didn't want her father, anyone else at the UN likely wouldn't do, either.

After what felt like an eternity, the light turned green and Mike gave Celine a small push forward. "Keep moving," Elton said. "Take a left," The mission so far was going smoothly. Once they crossed the light it was a straight shot towards the SUV. It was a cold night that was filled with chatter by the people walk through on the streets. Apparently there was a hyped up play debuting in Broadway. Next to Broadway was the Lobster Club, a popular restaurant to go to after a play. Judging by the influx of people coming in now, the play must be over. "Hurry up," Elton said watching more people coming their way.
The trio were soon surrounded by a sea of people trying to go past them. Mike and Elton stared at Celine making sure that she wasn't trying to escape. When they passed the two of them realized that they halfway towards the SUV. "Almost there," Mike whispered while Elton checked his phone. A text message appeared on his screen: "Has the package been secured?" It read. Taking a brief look at Celine, Elton quickly typed back. "The package has been secured and is ready for delivery," he responded.
The SUV was in view while Mike ran in front of Celine and opened the car door. "Get in," he whispered. "Now."

She was willing to be compliant as far as it took to get her to think of a plan better than the one she perhaps had. Which was simply to run, and from there, to possibly use someone's phone to call the embassy. She wasn't sure that would work.
But getting into a car with strangers? That was pushing it.
"This would be a whole lot easier for us all if you would just tell me what I supposedly know that you don't seem to." Idiots! No kidnapping would be necessary if they'd just stated their intentions in the first place. Tired as she was, even she was aware that they were being vague.
Being vague never meant good things.
Good gods, what if they had her father already locked up somewhere in a torture chamber, and that was why they weren't telling her anything. What would happen to the others? What about her mother? What about Rhais?
Besides, if they really cared about her safety, and getting her there in one piece, they would have realized she had asthma, and as such, cigarette- or any other kind- or smoke was bad for her lungs.
Idiots! She thought again. Maybe they didn't really know anyone who wanted her. Maybe they were just trying to scare her. The smell of the car as she peeked inside made her eyes water, and she nearly threw up.
" With respect-" She paused to try to clear her throat. It didn't help, but she really was trying to placate them as far as she was able. "I see you have not thought of everything," she observed. "If you really cared about getting me wherever we're going in one piece, you'd realize that I have asthma, and as such, that this air is toxic."
Maybe nobody really knew as much about her as they claimed to.
And that might be her escape.
But how?

"What did we just say?!" Mike growled at Celine. "Shut the fuck up! That's rule number one and right now you're breaking that fucking rule!" What is it with people not following directions. Mike and Elton didn't speak fucking Greek, it was plain English something a supposed speechwriter like Celine should understand plain as day.
"Get in," Elton said but Celine once again stood at the car in disgust she turned to the men and stated that she refused to get in the car due to the fact that she had asthma. "Forgot about that shit," Mike grumbled shaking his head. Elton scoffed "I told you to smoke that shit outside!" he growled. "But you didn't fucking listen!"
Mike shrugged glaring at Celine. "All right!" he said towering over Celine. "Do you have an inhaler in your bag? Just take a good inhale and then get in the SUV."
"We don't have all night," Elton said simply. "So hurry up."

She did have an inhaler, but she was afraid that if she took it out all the way, they'd try to take it. She opened her bag and took two sprays, carefully, not exposing the inhaler more than she had to, then made as if she were going to get in the car. But the feeling of her bottom hitting the seat gave her a running start, and she made it look like she was going to fall out of the car, just like they'd taught her once in school for a play she acted in. She tucked and rolled, tucked and rolled again,as if she really had fallen out of the car, then regained her feet, her head spinning, and while they didn't appear to be looking, took off dizzily down the street to the right.
Ugh, her throat felt like it was burning. She was surprised she could breathe at all. Usually, Celine at least tried to be brave. but between the night terrors and the smoke just now, she felt like she needed someone to take care of her. Maybe she should even be in the hospital, for a breathing treatment of the type her inhaler couldn't provide.
"Maximus," she whispered. "Hermes, help me. Help him get to me... lend him your winged feet if you have to."
She wasn't sure that if she did end up having to go to the hospital she should be driving herself. While she knew better than to expect Maximus to arrive immediately, he couldn't be that far away from here, could he?
"I love you, I love you, I love you, ten thousand times and more...." Maybe if she kept repeating that, with what little breath she had left, it would lead him to her....

The two men smiled as Celine looked like she was entering the SUV. Things were looking up after all, Mike was eager to get his pay a good 500,000 dollars. A higher than usual pay for a kidnapping. "Come on Celine," Mike said thinking about what he was going to spend his money on. Hookers and coke was the first thing that came to mind. He had a small bag in his jacket along with his pack of cigarettes. "Are you done?" Elton said staring at Celine. "We have a schedule to keep up."
"Yeah," Mike nodded. "Gotta let your daddy know that his favorite little girl is under custody."
There was a gap between the two men, enough for Celine to make a run for it if necessary. The path is clear of people who were going into the Lobster Restaurant so she has a straight shot to the alleyway.

Celine peeked out from behind the building she'd used to shield herself from being seen- a last thought before her head went completely blank from spinning so much. When she had regained her equilibrium, she was walking back towards the men when she saw that gap and made a run for it.
Custody is putting it loosely, she thought. Custody- the actual kind- is only if the police find you, I think.
She knew better than to try to go back for her phone- at least not yet. Rustling noises in the bush would probably only make her that much more obvious. But she could try to find the avenue where Max had texted for her to go. But even if she could get there, he hadn't said precisely where on Western to go! Would it be enough information to save her? She darted down the alley, disappearing into the opposite direction, depending on the store awnings- and a bit of hunching over since she was so tall, at 5' 10" - to keep her hidden.
