The Campus Martius is the centre of the Urbs Roma. A wide area of open land located in the middle of the city, it serves many a purpose, and as much is evidenced from the abundance of different temples and public spaces that can be found here. Besides the well-known Temple of Aurelius and the Hall of Neptune, the Campus Martius is dotted with elegant gardens open to visitors at all hours, as well as wide pools that shimmer in the dappled sunlight. Many come here to meet with friends and find a moment to relax before visiting one of the temples. And yet, this is not solely a place of relaxation. In the distance, visitors can often hear the clashing of metal drifting over from the few practice fields that host soldiers running diligent drills — after all, the place is named for Mars, God of War.
